Chill-Out Thread

A friend expressed to me that he was depressed and angry due to the news (and Twitter -- which he took off his phone, wisely), and I'm feeling that too, and I figured you guys are also feeling that.

So, here's a completely politics and bummer-free thread.

No politics -- consider the post below a "live" thread for political chatter. It's only about 20 minutes old, anyway.

If something breaks and you *have* to get it to my attention, email me. Or just say "I posted something in the thread below."

Also, no shit-stirring. Leave ongoing arguments to another thread.

Just say hello to each other, check in, and talk about cool stuff you're doing or reading.

59 Movie Reviews:

Blade Runner 2049: All of the weaknesses of the first without the shock of originality. Plot makes no sense and is essentially stolen from Total Recall (false memory implants to make someone hunt the person you want to find -- but if they had the memory implants in their possession, they could have just used them to find that person themselves!)

Game Night: Big disappointment. I had high hopes. Almost all of the good stuff was in the trailer. Stupid attempt at plot-twist that made no sense.

The Mummy: First 15 minutes were straight from Uncharted. Then it got bad, and stole liberally from An American Werewolf from London and the Brandon Frasier Mummy.

Where it didn't steal, it just was pointless and made no sense. I still do not understand the mummy's powers -- he seems to just be a vampire who steals life with a kiss (or inhalement of breath) instead of bite. The Dr. Jekyll cameo was terrible and unnecessary.

Also, as with Brandon Frasier mummy, this mummy almost immediately steals life and looks human instead of looking like a mummy. If you're going to make a mummy movie, why not acutally have, you know, a mummy in it? If you want to show the actor, just have her carrying a talisman that lets her appear human sometimes, but then reverts to mummy form when she attacks or tries to steal your breath.

60 Saw Zac Brown last weekend in Boston. Don't usually go to arena concerts but Fenway is acceptable. Anyway, it was a typically good concert and at the end the band invited a vet to come out on stage and the crowd stood and cheered USA-USA-USA. It was a heartwarming and surprising moment from a northeastern crowd.

Are you playing the original game? or the recent variations?

I enjoyed this game as a kid, but when I recently looked to buy it, I couldn't find it in it's original incarnation. It seems now there are multiple versions: only set in the ETO or the Pacific but not both; different stages of the war ('42 vs '43). Heck, there's even a WWI version, I think.

It's all different from what I remember. I don't like change; it frightens and enrages me.

He's unpacking after being forced to switch offices due to a reorganization. He started showing me his collection of fountain pens, fountain pen ink, etc. He has a really neat collection, and it turns out he knows a great deal about fountain pen mechanics. His exotic fountain pen ink collection is breathtaking!

My brief chocolate reward visit morphed into a 45 minute discussion of our favorite pens and mechanical pencils. I'm not quite the pen geek he is, but it was a lot of fun. The next time I bring in my Rotring 600 Trio multi-pen/pencil, he wants me to stop in with it.

180 My hearing ended over a week ago. 5 years worth. The Judge shot down her discovery/evidence she tried to enter. Her affidavits were impeached. She got in no expert affidavits and no witnesses. My attorney gave close to an hour Kong closing that had the Judge in tears. We got in 2 testimonies from experts, a witness, me, and 4 affidavits from experts saying I'm fine and she and her crew are harming the child along with this process. The Jsuge tried to be reasonable with her asking her point blank what she wanted to get to a standard decree and she said never and wanted the Judge to block all modification actions in the future. She told the Judge she wanted 2 hours every other weekend supervised and she refuses to co-parent with me, which is the law.

I think I'm going to be a full time dad. I'm very hopeful right now and relieved. The Judge saw through her lies and delays and BS.

Please pray. I faught a literal war that I would never wish on anybody.

True, but I had zero expectations, so I was pleasantly surprised that it didn't suck beyond belief.

And I am an idiot Star Wars fan, and have the first six on DVD, even though the last three were, in retrospect, pretty bad.

235 We had a very heavy rain yesterday. Came home and hubby tells there is water in the basement.. Jesus. No cracks in the foundation thankfully but he had a guy out that looked at it and recommend a sump pump. I have heard lots of horror stories so would like some input. Should we go the sump pump route or dig up that spot and re-inforce it?
Posted by: Jewells45 at June 20, 2018 06:10 PM (dUJdY)

I've had problems with water in two basements. With one the water rose up from the footers whenever there was a hard rain. That required jackhammering the inside perimeter of the basement to install waterproofing drainage stuff that led to a sump pump. I had two sump pumps put in, 1 standard type that plugged into an outlet, and a 2nd submersible pump that was on a battery backup. One fine day the standard pump burned out and if not for the backup pump it would have been bad.

The 2nd basement just had water come in and drain down the wall from one spot when it occasionally rained really hard. I had dirt dumped on the ground outside that spot to try to raise its level and cause rain to drain away from the house.

At my current house, my wonderful sweet boyfriend has spent weeks digging trenches, laying pipe, installing drains, and connecting in the drain pipes so that when rain pools on the driveway or hits the drain pipes it gets carried out and discharged away from the house.

I recommend you try to figure out where the water is coming in from. If it's coming in through the walls or up through the footers, you need a drainage system with a sump pump so that it's evicted from the foundation as quickly as possible. Do you have any wet spots on the walls or mold? That can be a tip off.. If the water is running down the wall because of an issue with water pooling outside, then you can look at fixing the drainage in that spot. Drain pipes can be a big culprit if they discharge too close to the house. Ground that has settled and created a low spot where rain puddles form is another source of leaks that can be fixed outside.

Good luck. Water is pernicious, and it can do a lot of damage....

243 Initially I found both Elementary and Sherlock entertaining, but my enthusiasm has waned.

One thing that bugs me about these and so many other detective/crime shows these days is that they feel the need to give the protagonist a mental illness every time. Holmes is a sociopath or on the autism spectrum. Poirot in the recent remake of Murder on the Orient Express is painfully OCD.

What was once an interesting idea (e.g. Monk) has really turned into a cheap gimmick. Why can't these people just be eccentric instead of having to have a clinical diagnosis?

246 Ersatz - on A&A, yes many many versions.

If you want something that plays pretty close to the classic 1980's version, then A&A 1942 won't be too far off. It has a few changes and new pieces though, so if you really want classic (and there is NOTHING wrong with that) ebay is your friend where you can find it for cheap if you are at all patient.

I am almost embarrassed at how many versions there are and I own. Current versions only include 1914 (WW1), 1941 (fast version, fewer options/pieces), 1942 2nd Edition ("core" version), and the big boys : A&A Pacific 1940 2nd Edition and A&A Europe 1940 2nd Edition, which when combined make a true monster of a game with many rules and such that don't exist in simpler versions.

Then for now at least you can also pick up a copy of A&A Anniversary Edition, which many feel hit the sweet spot between fun and complexity. When the last printing ran out back in 2008 it went up to about $1,000 a copy on ebay. You can find it now for a bit over $60 on Amazon.

If you are at all interested check out the forums on www.axisandallies.org.

I think it is their way of having the character have struggles. If you are brilliant and solve every case, what's the motivation as a character.

When you think about it, Magnum in Magnum PI was a Mary Sue living the perfect life.

Holmes is a sociopath or on the autism spectrum. Poirot in the recent remake of Murder on the Orient Express is painfully OCD.

OMG, Murder on the Orient Express was TERRRRRIBLE.

And yeah, they ripped off OTHER detectives to give him Monk's OCD, which itself was derived from Sherlock's assholery and single-minded focus.

It all goes back to Sherlock, the idea that someone with a profound gift must have some kind of limitation to balance it. I don't mind that schtick, given that it's a classic, but I do mind it when they give Hercule Poirot Monk's affliction.

Hercule Poirot's affliction was simply that he was a comical figure and vain -- that's it. He wasn't dysfunctional.

281 So I made a new pair of pants this week. I'm now considering what changes I want to make for the next pair. Every time I go to the women's restroom, I evaluate them in the thoughtfully provided full-length mirror. I'm thinking tapered is not the way to go, or at least not THIS tapered.

And I continue to knit scarves for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. I want them to sell them in their tiny food bank, just for a couple of dollars, cheap enough for people to buy them for Christmas presents or for themselves, but not free because that encourages bad behavior.

I've started Stephen King's latest (I know) and I fear it's going to be quite reminiscent of "It." And then I'm going to read a true crime my sister told me about because it freaked her out and we have drastically different taste when it comes to books. It's called "A Death in White Bear Lake."

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle had Sherlock Holmes struggle with cocaine addition after it was discovered to be dangerous. (Yes, in late Victorian Europe, the Peruvian marching powder was initially thought to be a "harmless" stimulant). Holmes has some unpleasant personality traits and I heard an interesting talk by a professional actor a while back about why actors playing Sherlock Holmes grow to dislike the character: they don't have Dr. Watson to act as a filter, unlike the audience/reader.

I was helping mom in her garden a few years ago and a hummingbird buzzed my head and slowed down for an instant right next to my ear. I caught the shimmer out of the corner of my eye and felt/heard the wingbeats.

My brain put its hand on my shoulder and said "son, I classify this as the world's largest wasp. It has decided that today, you die. I'll take over from here" and launched me headfirst at about warp five into a pile of pulled weeds. Awkward!

I have to focus on the good things. The black dog keeps howling about the bad things. I'm learning, I think.

I was watching something on that too, and wondered the same thing. The historian said if you caught the King's eye, you pretty much had no say in the matter. You did not want to tick him off, not only bcz he'd be mad at you, but at your family too, and could make everyone miserable. Supposedly he was very charming.

Then there's the whole "being queen" and you'll be the wife that sticks...that'll change him. Also, you are the one that can deliver him his son, then you'll be safe.

Different historians have different theories. One thing is for sure, they all seem to disagree about Anne, in one way or another.

423 396 Not a chillout topic, but my dad died on the 1st of the month. He was almost 91, so had a good full life, but he was really healthy and on track to make it to 100. Had a dumb accident in April and never recovered from head trauma.

The family was lucky, we all got to say goodbye, but it is still very sad. I'm finally picking up the ashes and death certificates tomorrow, so I can settle the estate.

429 Any advice about novel writing?

I'm working on my first novel. Draft 1 is finished -- that was a big hurdle, because I proved to myself I could do it. Working on Draft 2 now and my Internal Critic will. Not. Shut. Up. You know, "you SUCK. Your story SUCKS. Your writing SUCKS. You should GIVE UP." Etc., ad infinitum.

I managed to ignore him enough to finish Draft 1, but now that I'm trying to read my own work with a critical eye in order to fix it and polish it up for presentation, he's slowing me down.

Any of you writers here have any advice? Tricks? Edifying reading or anything?

471 1 I recognized several weeks ago that I needed to seriously chill. I've cut 'way back on my news consumption.

When the immigrant children brouhaha began, I found it quite easy to tell myself, "This is just the left's latest infantile temper tantrum. There was one before this and there'll be many more to come. I don't have to participate in this shit show."

It felt good.
Posted by: Meade Lux Lewis at June 20, 2018 06:43 PM (HiLJ1)

Kinda my thoughts too, except I find the need to balance it with my civil duty. I feel that if I had been more active when the illegal immigration thing began, we would not be in this place. So, I want to learn from that and make sure I'm doing something. Make calls, or send a letter, or e-mail.

To paraphrase Rachael on Friends "We are taking our Country back".

That takes action. Plus, I owe Trump, he takes virtual bullets daily, as does his family.

You might want to just check around outside and see if there's anything with how the ground slopes or the drainage pipes discharge that could be improved. I'd hold off on trenching the basement and putting in a sump pump until you see if this happens again. That's a really expensive fix that might not be justified.

If you're worried the puddle would spread and harm something down there if it happens again, you could look into creating a small dam with a line of sandbags or one of those flexible absorbent tubes of stuff they use to absorb or "fence" off hazmat spills. You could probably make your own if you had to with clumping cat litter in fabric tubes. That way while you're watchfully waiting to see if the problem reappears, you've also got a fallback to protect if it does.

That's a frustrating situation. Hang in there and best of luck!

502 So, there's an elderly couple who live together in a nursing home. One day, the wife walks in on the husband gettin' a handy from one of the other old ladies.

She freaks out: "Why would you do this?!?! What does she have, that I don't?"

He replies: "Parkinson's."

My sweet old mare had to be PTS on Monday and between high (for us) humidity from much celebrated rain and bawling my eyes out I had quite a head-ache. I had not been taking any NSAIDs for two weeks since getting a first x-ray cuz of some theories that it delays bone healing but made an exception on Monday for the headache. I now suspect that any NSAIDs delaying healing effects is more due to "whee I feel fine" than them inhibiting cox or cox2 that is needed to heal which is the *medical* theory floating on the web.

But thanks for the laugh on 'broke you ankle as part of performance review' My bosses are wimps and also nice guys but that would be a diabolical way to make me spend more time at the computer.

Technically, heart attack. But I got to ride in two ambulances which
was way cool and it seemed like half my town showed up to see me off on
the first one. Which was very nice of them.

And I got to watch them stick a stent in one of my heart arteries
which was pretty freaky. And I'm pretty sure one of my nurses had a
crush on me. Or me on her. One of the two.

All in all it was a busy couple days.

638 So I watched the trailer for the new Magnum, P.I.

Ehh. It could be worse. It's slicker looking, obviously. Looks like the remake of Hawaii Five-0.

I haven't watched that one either except for a clip or two maybe. Same look though.

I wasn't a huge fan of the original Magnum largely because I was a teenager and wasn't around much when it originally aired. Still though I've seen plenty of episodes and it is a classic show. The humor balanced with some pretty dark material occasionally worked really well. The episodes with Ivan and when they go back to Vietnam are extraordinarily well done, very dark, and they stay with you after you watch them.

I preferred Magnum's television ancestor Jim Rockford. Magnum was essentially The Rockford Files in Hawaii.

Selleck even did a couple of Rockford episodes where he played a goody two shoes private dick named Lance White. They're memorable because they're hilarious.

685 I watched season 1 of Counterpart recently. Though it kept me interested in the beginning, by the end of the season, I was losing patience. It's one of those shows where the main exercise is trying to figure out wtf the rules are in the show's universe.

I just find those thing tedious after a while. Just tell us what the basic rules of the universe are, and then tell us a story in that universe. I especially don't care for the trope of making a big reveal about how the universe works in order to generate some new stories when it's something that should have been visible all along.

But it was funny when I was there that it was much harder to get tickets to the Yankees spring training games than to the Devil Rays regular season games. I think on the whole more of the transplants tend to come from the midwest while east coaster tend to go to the Miami, Ft Lauderdale area.

736 Bumped from the 100s...

Anybody watching soccer?

I don't watch soccer. If I wanted to watch somebody struggle to score for 90 minutes, I'd take my friends out to the bar.

741 I rode a Suzuki hayabusa for the first time today...it belongs to a friend. Never needed to get out of second gear. Fast. Stupid fast.

742 Sorry about that. My chores kept me from staying on the thread. I'll look up Old Tony, thanks.

As for parts... I don't know yet. I suspect there will be a lot of eBay, some Home Depot and some local metal shop sourcing. My partner in this endeavor can weld, which should help keep costs down.

Small routers are easy. Routers big enough for plywood and good accuracy are not cheap.

746 Prayers for Pickles, Chavez, Scrogg and others.

My only news is waiting for first grandbaby to be arrive (to train to be my mini-me to irritate his parents)...and one of my pierced ears keeps closing up, which is weird.

Other than that exciting news, busy with gardening, etc. and recovering from a yuge baby shower tea I hosted a week ago. Who knew you could kill your feets cooking French pastries on hardwood floor. I am gettin' olde. xoxo
