Thread before the Gardening Thread: No Snark Week [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Happy Saturday! I am out of snark today. I am even out of irony. Among other dramatic events of the week, I watched emergency crews at our home and at the hospital work together pretty intelligently to bring our friend back from the brink of death. Changes your perspective some. I plan to write some notes of appreciation. Lots of prayers were said in his behalf, too.

The things our friend cared about when he came back to consciousness a few days later were the people he knows and his little dog. And making sure that his private world was in order. My to-do list has changed as a result of this experience with him. Maybe it shouldn't take something so traumatic to prompt us to remember some of those important things we have been putting off.

I've been following the news, but my mind is not on analysis right now. This is an open thread, so if you have an observation on the world of media or politics, feel free. It was a remarkable week in more ways than one.

But if you're ready for a breather, I have been saving a video for a while that you might appreciate, or at least find interesting. I like the idea of people feeling free to ramble alone in the park, in the dark. I guess that was a different time.

Here's a little slicker version of the song, Ella singing with the Duke Ellington Orchestra:

Can't imagine these being recorded today.

Anything interesting happen to you or near you this week? Got any interesting plans for the weekend?

I survived a scare last year, almost to the day.
It kind of messed me up for a while though, because I developed anxiety disorder, feeling like I was on the brink of death every moment.

But I'm better after a longterm recovery process that included lots of prayer.

17 I plan to write some notes of appreciation.

I think that's a nice idea. I think the world would be a nicer place if more people did that. I am known as the "Card Queen" at the church because I send them out a lot. I prefer that than sending out "Thank you" e-mails although I do that too; Written cards are more personal. However, there have been plenty of times when I meant to send out a card of appreciation and didn't and I regret that later. That reminds me, a friend gave me flowers on the day of my son's graduation saying "It's just as much your graduation as it is his and you should be congratulated ." I think that was very sweet of her. I will send her a thank you note.

21 KT, If were we looking for snark, I have some expert advise:

You may seek it with thimbles--and seek it with care;
You may hunt it with forks and hope;
You may threaten its life with a railway-share;
You may charm it with smiles and soap--'"

("That's exactly the method," the Bellman bold
In a hasty parenthesis cried,
"That's exactly the way I have always been told
That the capture of Snarks should be tried!")

"'But oh, beamish nephew, beware of the day,
If your Snark be a Boojum! For then
You will softly and suddenly vanish away,
And never be met with again!'

30 Being grateful for the small things, or large ones, that friends do at any time is good but to have people remember and think of you during trying times is a blessing beyond words.
This week has been immeasurably stressful along with the week before. The fourth anniversary of my partner Karen's death.
Lost to hypothermia while hiking. Three days for the search crews to locate her. The doubts, the despair of that time jump up and down on me relentlessly. Friends stood by me, helped and took care of me and I'd have been lost without them. My gratitude is boundless.

What you are describing is post-traumatic distress.

Notice I did not say post-traumatic distress disorder.

It ain't disorder until it lingers beyond the point at which most people would recover. Otherwise, it's just living.

Now, am I just being semantic?

No. The problem, as I see it, is that we have words for all sorts of things that represent the human condition, and some of them, the so-called cure is worse than the underlying "disorder."

You used the word, anxiety. That again, implies a disorder. However, the thoughts and emotions around events that are traumatic, are NOT due to something being wrong with you. They are you, responding to your world, in a completely rational way, that lessens over time, with effort and support.

One should NEVER feel "bad" or "wrong" for dealing with trauma this way, but the way our mental health industry handles these things, often, is to give people pills, which impede the actual healing.

I am glad you are better, and I am glad you had prayer to help you get there.

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at June 23, 2018 11:26 AM

I started doing this at my office the last 4-5 years or so. At the end of the year, in addition to writing up a review for each designer I worked with throughout the year to provide to their bosses for their evaluation, I get each of them a card and a $25 gift card to some restaurant. And then I'll write a little something personal for each of them in the card to thank them for all the hard work they did during the year that helped the success of the project. And I always let them know that I could not succeed in my job without their efforts.

It's something small, but it goes a long way to building good relationships and showing appreciation and letting people know we see them as people/friends/family, not just coworkers.

A few years ago, I also started doing this for the ladies who work down in the cafeteria in our building. I see them every morning to get my breakfast and they always are cheerful and friendly. I got each of them cards with a personal message thanking them for always starting off my mornings on a happy note and included $25 gift cards for them too.

I can't even tell you how overjoyed they were. It made my day to see their reactions too. For all the nonsense they deal with people on a daily basis being jerks or impatient or rude, I hoped that my gesture let them know their efforts were appreciated.

Small things goes long ways to build good relationships.

I watched crows.

I decided on my walks where I was sunk in anxiety, that crows were a good luck sign, and when I saw one I had to say about what I was mired in, "that is going to be OK, and I had to relax"

Eventually I got in my head that if I thought about positive things, I could say to myself, "that will happen and be good"

The thing is, crows are not like light poles or fire hydrants, they don't show up regularly, so I had to start thinking positive things all the time for the off-chance that I would see a crow.

The result was that I started to thing of positive things instead of anxiety things and my head got better. If I had just tried to force myself to think positive I would have tied myself into further anxiety and knots, so I got to trick myself into it.

Crows had nothing to do with it, but I love feeding them still.

61 There was a lot about what a shit hole Mexico was yesterday. Dangerous too: The company I work for is delightfully old school. They take their high performers to all inclusive destinations every February. We've been to Jamaica, The Bahamas, and Mexico multiple times. Wife and I decided to take our daughters a few years ago, and it ended up a beautiful vacation. But I almost died before it got going. We checked into our room, and I headed to the rec. desk to book a snorkeling trip. There was a cloud burst and I came back to the room dripping wet. Oldest daughter and I were setting up my tablet to test the GoPro, and I reached out and touched a lamp fixture on the credenza. I got ALL the amps from that fixture, and the connection at the outlet exploded. I was dazed, and watched as the cord burned away from the plug, and continued to burn, creeping up the back of the credenza. Oldest had her wits, and poured a bottle of water to stop the plastic/copper fire. It took 2 bottles of water to extinguish that fire. If I hadn't had my flip-flops on would have probably been dead. The room was filled with acrid smoke, and it pooled up around the absolutely mute smoke alarm.
We ended up getting upgraded to the "Presidente" suite and had a great vacation. That's the last trip to mexico my company will ever book.

64 Fenelon, I had just about tried everything that seemed reasonable to me prior to that. It was time to do something else.

In one of Pratchett's book, Cohen the Barbarian in the middle of a battle sees a something, declares it a portent and shouts that the gods favor his side.

When asked if he was sure, he responded, "does it have a label? Is it nailed down? Then I'm knicking it."

I decided I liked that attitude and modeled my action on it.

The funny thing is, you weren't "tricking" yourself at all!

That's how this stuff works. It's how the human mind heals. By using itself to create thoughts that are useful, meaningful, and get us moving in the direction we want to go, instead of mired in the muck of anxiety.

It's also important to note, what you describe there, "force myself to think positive," is NOT the same thing, and it rarely works for anybody.

If that makes any sense.

The difference between recognizing one's negativity, and choosing to do something positive, is not the same as pretending the negative is not there in the first place. It's there, and you are choosing not to give in to it.

I actually like Mexico. My last trip was in 2006 before it got really bad. Myself and two others rode our street bikes on a 12 day 3500 mile ride in the interior. No trouble whatsoever. Everywhere we rode we were treated like Rock Stars, just for being there. The only time we got nervous was when some obvious cartel guys wanted us to go party with them. We declined.

Burt, I finally figured out that it was some form of PTSD. I'd been through a very trying year, and when my third loved one passed away suddenly at age 37 I think something in my heart/mind continuum just snapped.
Thank God I had a doc that eschews anxiety meds, I can't take that stuff anyway. There was a young man who helped me along the way who shared that he had anxiety and it was solved with CBD oil. Have you heard of this?
Posted by: kallisto at June 23, 2018 11:44 AM (Iz8Py)

CBD oil? I assume it's not related to our notorious COB??

No, I have never heard of it. People use all sorts of things to heal, and if it helps, I'm glad to hear it.

The mind and body need to be fed, and if this helps to do that, then that is wonderful. Any pill that masks the pain though, is a detriment to healing.

I do know lots of people embrace the term PTSD, and I don't mean to be dismissive, because people can and do "break" due to trauma, of all kinds.

It's my own soapbox issue, I just don't like calling it a disorder, because as I said, it suggests something wrong with the person, and that bugs the hell out of me.

Posted by: BurtTC at June 23, 2018 11:57 AM (cY3LT)

82 On a more somber note, pre-write your own obituary. Plan your service with favorite music, etc.

And put in a foil-lined envelope, sealed like High Security Safe codes, the actual prices you paid for firearms and other toys.

Needless to say, all accounts should have proper beneficiaries. One hint from my sister, get a power of attorney that goes into effect when two doctors agree you are mentally incompetent.

I'm gong to review these with a lawyer,

Finally, get rid of "stuff". Very few Playboys are of any value. And you can't just dump them in the woods. Kids these days do not swan around in the woods. They are downloading pron on their phone.

Heh. Once upon a time, I recall a discussion (it may have occurred on this very site) about a remote kill switch. The idea being, if you have a computer and/or hard drive with all sorts of "sensitive" information on it, you pay a company some small amount of money to kill it, erase it, wipe it clean (like, not with a cloth), if the company does not get a signal from you after so many hours/days.

Ostensibly, one would be protecting one's banking and other financial data, but truly, we know that lots of fellas don't want their family members finding their pron stash after they're gone.

Tends to make the eulogies less... well, somber:

152 Yelp reviewers on "The Red Hen" asked if they served Republicans. Someone else if they served Christians. This was some idiots response:

I have eaten at the Red Hen several times and always been treated respectfully. I'm sure the owner serves true Christians--those who actually follow Christ's edicts and don't take his name in vain by calling themselves Christians and acting otherwise.

So, the implication is that person will determine who is a Christian-and evidently Sarah Huckabee Sanders isn't. Quite a way to run a business. :^(

Lately, I've noticed the Mobys calling in on Rush and other talk show have a new talking point that they push Every. Single. Time.

They say something along the lines of-

"I really like the results of what Trump is doing...the economy for instance.

"But-

"I'm really bothered by the fact that President Trump is not a godly man."

Then they'll use some leftard talking points dressed in the skin of "Trump is not a godly man".

So yeah, they're trying to use your faith against you.

176 Probably should save this for the Book Thread tomorrow but while it still resonates after reading about it felt I should post it.

How to be Safe by Tom McAllister. The New Yorker and Entertainment Weekly love it.

He appropriates the voice of a woman teacher, how sexist is that also right? Then makes her an emotional wreck, playing into stereotypes again Tom? So she gets suspended for an emotional outburst. Does this need further comment? While suspended a school shooting happens and the media at first blames her. Even though later exonerated, a cloud still follows her as the town descends into bickering.*

If anyone wants to read the reviews go for it, but they reinforce my decision to skip this book completely.

I'm a Christian (in the sense that I was raised Catholic, but no longer attend church, but still believe in God/Jesus), but am no Biblical scholar.

But aren't there plenty of stories in the Bible where God has used ordinary, flawed people to spread His word and works?

As far as Presidents (and any elected official is concerned, I am of the Batman Begins persuasion:

"It's not who you are underneath, it what you do that defines you."

I am also more a man impressed by the actions of others, not their words.

The Left is all impressed with words and speeches and redefining words to make themselves feel good. Virtue signaling. Yet, they never are held accountable for all their words and speeches and virtue signaling failing in the real world to actually improve any situation.

I don't care what President Trump (or any Republican politician) says, I care what he does. So far, his actions speak louder than any words spoken by his detractors.

184 my little piece of the old farm here comes with many memories. My Mom was on the way out to take my grandmother to the doctor when her mom passed away in the 60's (in an old rocking chair I need to restore). Two of my uncles that still lived here had that deeply embedded in their memories. For several years I helped care for the one that bought this part of the farm, then took care of my Mom here for eight years.

But through all those important times, others are plotting on how they can get into more money, especially with my uncles that didn't have kids. So yeah, people are important, but the land of liberty we have came with people that thought generations ahead, and often fought and sacrificed to repel (local, federal, or foreign) tyranny.

All too often ("usually" is what my step Dad told me) ... the caring people get screwed by the conniving people and their lawyers. So indeed the solid will for your family is important, and the scheme is that conniving people and their lawyers know when the elderly are in their last year or so, they can be cajoled and deceived. A video of you stating your will, and a doctor that agrees his patient was of sound mind at the time is helpful, if there are "foxes in the hen house".

For those that have family and a strong community ... God bless you, keep building it and guarding it. I see some strong families, but I also see some money coming in and buying up many family farms, run by liars and cheats. As that happens, and absent landowners rent to the struggling small farmer or hire illegals ... we lose the country and are on the "Road to Serfdom".

Maintaining the whole generational package is essential ... for which we are called deplorable and racist, irredeemable.

I know, I know, they think they can erode the evangelical Christian base.
That ain't gonna happen because they know the Bible says that the Devil himself can quote scripture and can come to you as an angel of light.

a small group of evangelicals known as Red Letter Christians. They eschew politics altogether, saying they choose instead to follow Jesus' teachings: feeding the poor, sheltering immigrants and tending to the sick.

And yet at the same time we've just experienced a tax cut that's removed $1.5 trillion of money from essential services, mostly benefiting the wealthy

So they're not interested in feeding the poor themselves. They're interested in forcing taxpayers to do it. And they're not interested in encouraging foreign taxpayers to look about the foreign poor; they demand American taxpayers do that.

That's been going on since the beginning of Trump's campaign. The reason we have Manafort, Papadopoulos, Page and others is because both democrats and republicans put out word early if you work for Trump you're through in DC so he didn't have a big field to choose from.

Guess what happened?

Black employees complained that he said "ni&&er," and of course he was...fired and publicly humiliated!:

240 All too often ("usually" is what my step Dad told me) ... the caring people get screwed by the conniving people and their lawyers. So indeed the solid will for your family is important, and the scheme is that conniving people and their lawyers know when the elderly are in their last year or so, they can be cajoled and deceived. A video of you stating your will, and a doctor that agrees his patient was of sound mind at the time is helpful, if there are "foxes in the hen house"."

"Pregnant girlfriend cried and pleaded with boyfriend to stop YouTube stunt moments before shooting him dead"

"A heavily pregnant girlfriend, who fatally shot the father of her child in a botched YouTube stunt, cried and pleaded with him to stop moments before the tragedy, new court documents have revealed.

Monalisa Perez, 21, told Pedro Ruiz III “I can’t do this babe, I am so scared” as he urged her to fire a high-calibre pistol into a book he was holding in front of his chest.

A transcript of the video, released Friday, detailed how Ruiz, 22, reassured his girlfriend that the 1.5-inch hardcover encyclopedia would stop the bullet, as they filmed the stunt outside their Minnesota home in June last year.

However the shot from the .50-caliber Desert Eagle Perez fired from point blank range penetrated through the book and fatally wounded the aspiring YouTuber.

The stunt took place in front of 30 witnesses including Perez and Ruiz’s three-year-old daughter."

yeah, in time "the country" has to do the boycott/divest thing to the DC/NY mafia. Move all investments out of the east coast cabal ... and as much as possible invest locally to build your own community. We have sent our savings through the globalist machine and became too dependent of WallStreet to invest (in foreign regimes or through public "offerings" determined by whom?).

They returned the favor by supporting slavery, pollution, theft of tech, etc ... to make their profit in other lands as we ran up debt buying it all. The most leveraged sucked up massive profit, and when they failed we bailed them out instead of letting them fail, and jailing them for their bribery and fraud. The American economy moved toward "financial services" ... lending to the debtor class and printing out of thin air.

But the profits and money printing (by government but also by banks and public stock printers) are such an allure that we all feel so rich. This has many good points ... a growing economy, but many distortions for the rigged markets and those that play in the quadrillion dollar (unregulated, shadowy) derivative markets, not to mention all the underworld money and power.

a big task, but we can at least invest more locally, even buying stocks more locally ... though the seat on the exchange doesn't come cheap. complicated and tricky business.

381 The right thing to do for the restaurant that kicked Sanders out, is this:

Go in, be seated, and order the most expensive thing on the menu. Don't touch the water, don't consume a THING.

When the entrée is served, leave the proper tip for the waiter/waitress, then stand up and leave.

There is no "Theft of Services", when the you've not partaken of said services, and tipping the staff ensures that you've not stolen their help, either.

This way, the restaurant is clearly OUT the value of the foods cooked and served, which you now reject.

Be sure to note on the bill though, your reason for leaving... something like "This is for Sarah Sanders!"

Make it cost. Make it hurt.

Smile as you walk out the door.

But that right, under a broader concept unknown to "progressives" (a ridiculous upside-down term) of freedom of association, was devastated by ill-advised "civil rights" "reforms". So who knows - maybe the idiot restaurant should *not* have the right to refuse service, under current conditions.

Ayn Rand wrote back in the 60s "Freedom of association includes the freedom not to associate."

Abolishing the Jim Crow laws that made racial discrimination mandatory was the right thing to do. But the civil rights laws went too far in outlawing private discrimination. Who cares if a white restaurant owner only wants to serve white customers, or if a black barbershop owner only wants to cut and style black peoples' hair? What business is it of the government whether or not a bar owner wants to allow smoking on his property?

Let everybody, business owners and customers alike, exercise free choice and let the free market operate. That will ensure the greatest happiness for the greatest number, without force or coercion.

Impossible to imagine there haven't been multiple referrals or criminal investigations started by Huber based on the basic facts of the FISA abuse chapter of the mega-scandal.

And the central mystery that still confounds: how can Rosie stay in his job, or at least not be specifically recused from anything to do with this aspect of the crime wave, given his signature on the last FISA warrant renewal application? (we'd know if such a recusal took place)

464 Cicero, agree that the IG performance so far was mixed - thorough investigation, capped by a cowardly, almost humorously disingenuous "findings" component. So much of the purpose of the IG function was squandered on the Espionage Act case. But the factoids discovered and documented and so on may well be valuable for prosecutions.

I know many here are clairvoyant and already know how everything turns out, but I lack their gift, so remain guardedly pessimistic.
