Early Leaks About IG Report Indicate That It's a Whitewash

I pretty much expected this.

It claims there was no political bias shown by Strzok and Page (!), faults Comey for discussing Hillary's crimes but not for absolving her of crimes, and finds fault with Lynch for not talking to Comey.

That's the claim -- that Lynch wasn't talking to him through this period.

Maybe these are the quotes that are exciting liberal reporters -- so maybe the full report (which will be released at 3pm) is more honest, but so far, it's not looking good. And Bloomberg claims they obtained all the conclusions in the report. So my hope that maybe these are just the conclusions Democrat congressmen wanted to leak seems to be a false hope.

Former FBI Director James Comey "deviated" from bureau and Justice Department procedures in handling the probe into Hillary Clinton, damaging the agencies’ image of impartiality even though he wasn’t motivated by politics, the department’s watchdog found in a highly anticipated report.

"While we did not find that these decisions were the result of political bias on Comey’s part, we nevertheless concluded that by departing so clearly and dramatically from FBI and department norms, the decisions negatively impacted the perception of the FBI and the department as fair administrators of justice," Inspector General Michael Horowitz said in the report's conclusions, which were obtained by Bloomberg News.

Although the report being sent to Congress on Thursday doesn’t deal with the origins of the probe into Russia meddling in the 2016 U.S. election and possible collusion with those around President Donald Trump, the president and his Republican allies in Congress were primed to seize on it as evidence of poor judgment and anti-Trump bias within the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department.

Republicans, always seizing.

...

Some of what Horowitz discovered has already been made public, and Trump and Republican lawmakers have pounced on those findings in an effort to discredit Comey and, by extension, the investigation now being run by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.

Seizing when they're not pouncing.

...

Republican critics seized on previous revelations from the inspector general that two FBI officials who worked on Mueller's Russia investigation, Peter Strzok and Lisa Page, exchanged text messages sharply critical of Trump. Mueller removed Strzok from the inquiry after the texts were discovered, and Page has since left the FBI.

One example cited in the new report is an email exchange between Strzok and Page on Aug. 8, 2016. Page questioned whether Trump would become president. Strzok replied: "No. No he’s not. We’ll stop it."

But Horowitz said in the report to be issued Thursday that "we did not find documentary or testimonial evidence that improper considerations, including political bias, directly affected the specific investigative actions we reviewed." Still, he wrote that "the conduct by these employees cast a cloud over the entire FBI investigation."

Horowitz found a "troubling lack of any direct, substantive communication" between Comey and Attorney General Lynch ahead of Comey's July 5 press conference on Clinton and his October 28 letter to Congress.

"We found it extraordinary that, in advance of two such consequential decisions, the FBI director decided that the best course of conduct was to not speak directly and substantively with the attorney general about how best to navigate those decisions."

Will the Democrats and media be seizing and/or pouncing on this whitewash?

11 I think there might be two things Trump is waiting on:

The midterms in which case if there's a democratic House kiss any possibility of justice for the deep state goodbye until 2020 at least.

All the final IG reports (this is just one of them) to come out and beef up his grounds to torpedo the DOJ/Deep State.

He has the patience of Job though, while the rest of us who have seen the Clintons get away scott-free for crimes against humanity for decades are less enthused and optimistic.

Amen, one of the reasons I have some hope is the GOP-E did us a favor by not having to force us to scramble and find a million primary challengers to get these fucks out of office. Instead most of them are retiring and the retirees would be replaced by more friendly Trumpers. Then you have additional gifts such as Sanford being run out of town just for the extra icing on the cake. I really think a lot of the voters learned from the Moore fiasco and are acting accordingly.

Posted by: Froderick Wonkensteen at June 14, 2018 12:36 PM (+dsLj)

45 The cited statement about no evidence of political motivation affecting the investigation is, of course, absurdly at odds with a lot of already publicly known evidence (documentary and, almost certainly, testimonial).

The amazing Word document edit we have showing how the obvious, straightforward impropriety of changing the finding of reckless handling of classified info was changed to a meaningless and baseless alternative wording is dispositive.

Espionage Act violations were found, were reported in language consistent with the relevant statute, and then were simply ignored, and alternative legally meaningless language substituted. If THAT bit of documentary evidence is ignored or somehow interpreted as OK - i.e. not crude and obvious obstruction of justice - then we *do* have a whitewash, and one as crude and transparent as the original faux investigation.

75 If the conclusions are what is stated here, it will further deteriorate Americans trust in their government, specifically agencies like the FBI.
It's pretty clear to even the most pedestrian observer there is significant favoritism by the FBI and intelligence agencies heads to the Democrat Party.

Clinton broke the law according to U.S. Code and agreements she signed.
Trump was spied on, had a criminal investigation opened, and has been under constant assault based on a phony "dossier" created as part of the Democrats opposition research. It was nurtured by the FBI, et al in an attempt to discredit and defeat the Democrats opposition party. That should scare every American and be running on the front page of every newspaper- but it's not.
Instead we get this whitewash, cover-up by the press and agencies like the FBI threatening Congress because they are performing their constitutional duties.

This is a very good comment. I face this at work somewhat frequently (a single error being seen as a process failure, and tighter process control being proposed to alleviate one-off conditions). If this indeed true and what we have is not a wide series of procedural failures but instead a cultural or entrenchment failure then yes, no procedural solutions will work because the framework is wrong.

I will have to cogitate on that, but thanks for giving me a new avenue of thought, Warai-otoko.

1. Maybe Hillary wasn't crooked?

3. This is a limited scope of stupid things and we shouldn't worry.

I don't know, I thought I had a longer list.

But, analysis:

1. of course, hillary is crooked. Unless we are really, really missing something.
1a. the server is clearly set up to avoid scrutiny
1b. she deleted emails under subpoena.
1c. any clearance of her is therefore fucking insane.

2. Time will tell but if Horowitz is too scared/swampy to be seen as helping Trump, well, Sessions better wake the fuck up, un-recuse and get real special counsels up and running.

3. The big ticket items are what? Ending the mueller probe. what else are we really worrying about? Are we expecting to actually indict clinton or obama...? never gonna happen. So let's focus.

Posted by: Krystal Slider Enthusiast at June 14, 2018 12:53 PM (FOPyv)

160 The thing about corruption is that based on history, it tends to go on quite a while then is suddenly all collapses all at once. Its not a slow gradual thing of people getting busted over time, its a big crash and burn.

Ronald Reagan, for all his positives and my respect for the president, established that if you control the system and simply stonewall justice officials, you can get away with pretty much anything.

They really were breaking the law and violating the constitution with the Iran/Contra thing. Nobody even argued it wasn't happening, just that they didn't recall events and that it was for a good cause. With that as precedent, we got Clinton's many, many corruptions such as secrets to China for campaign money, and on its been ever since. We can only hope that there's reckoning, but not count on it.

Ultimately, I don't think so. I think Trump knows the trajectory based on non public information, and he's letting this play out. Same with Sessions. He could fire Sessions or get him to resign in a second. He's not and there is a reason for that.
By the way, Sessions has been incredibly effective in some of the things he is doing to reform DOJ and other important policy matters. It just never makes the paper.

In the Congressional hearing on 900-FBI-Files Craig Livingstone, it *settled* on the idea that since nobody knows who hired him, nothing could be said about why he had those 900 FBI Files in his office.

The same people who are out for blood on Trump--and want to know every detail of who talked to Don Jr. about preparing his statement about the Trump Tower meeting, are so unconcerned about whether or not Craig Livingstone wandered off a White House tour and started ordering FBI files for interesting reading in an abandoned office he found!

It is fit for an authoritarian, totalitarian deep state complex - which is what we have.

I know, i'm fairly imprecise with my language on this one, so what I mean isn't getting across quite right.

When I say "political", I mean "in the hands of the polity". Ignore the so-called rules and procedures, because clearly there is nothing sacred about them anymore. One side is riding roughshod over "The System", so you'd be a fool to try to fight within the system.

When I say "politcal", i mean that one partisan faction takes control of the levers of power from within "The System", with the tacit support of a majority of the polity (the voters). As opposed to on one hand allowing "The System" to operate undisturbed with little to no input from the polity, or on the other hand, obliterating the system wholesale via mass violence (i.e. Revolution)

"We have come a long way since the Civil War and Jim Crow, but all of us are well aware of the difficult journey we still have before us. So let's all contemplate all of that next Tuesday, June 19 - or Juneteenth. And thanks to those who brought his to our attention."

And demanded that her testimony not be relied on.

"Bias" doesn't work the same way, both ways, to Dems. She wasn't even saying: "we got to have an insurance policy against Clinton", she was simply rebuking her nephew that his dishonesty struck her to be like Clinton's. Not even that she *voted* for Clinton was taken into consideration. She voted for him, and said she soured on his character after having had involvement in the RTC scandal.

Remember the Margot Cleveland post yesterday "The deficiencies exposed will prompt calls for a new, unbiased, and thorough investigation of Clinton". Not "will prompt" but "will prompt calls". The IG report will be news and haggled over for a couple days then forgotten. Just like the Nunes memo was going to shock Americans and shake the DC political class to the core. Does anybody even remember it?

Sort of speaks to intent. MAYBE??????? said not a lawyer.
Then pile on all his nefarious documented actions that were had the practical effect of stiriring up an illegal FISA warrant and spying and you maybe have a case that they were abusing there power to do what that buck toothed varmint said.

Strangely I don't think it makes much of a difference in this case. If it was good Gowdy it means corruption targeting innocent people. If bad Gowdy it means corruption of the deep state that has been exposed for all to see. Either way there is no getting around the corruption part.

333 I'm going to try to reiterate this point, because my language skill suck balls today.

Just because there is no "smoking gun" or frog marches or otherwise legal remedies that come from this report, it may not be entirely useless.

All we need is that one soundbyte, that one catch phrase, one thing that makes the public wake up and take notice. Doesn't even have to be true, either.
But with public good will at your back, you can break every damn law in the book. If it worked for the Clintons, it will work for Trump.

I believe in the "Rule of Law". I do NOT believe in the rule of arbitrary statutes masquerading as Laws, enforced by Barbarians.

The solution is not Legal. It is Political. (Or eventually Military/Revolutionary if we let things go on like this for long enough)

I too, do too.

It's 500 pages. It's going to take some time to read and process. It won't contain criminal referrals because IG reports never do. This one report is not going to be the be all and end all.

As a rule, I tend not to believe sources such as the liberal msm which want to spin a liberal narrative and instead like to read it for myself. At the very least, I think it might be wise to actually wait for the report to be released and read it before declaring what it does or doesn't say or mean. But that's just me.

Anywho, back to work. Have fun storming the castle.

350 At this point in internet history, about 38% of all porn is futa pony porn, so I don't think it qualifies as "deviant" anymore.

I chalk that up to the hedonist's dilemma, not that everyone is a pervert.

At first, seeing a naked girl's breast is overwhelmingly exciting, Then you gotta see more. Then its gotta be a certain kind. Then she's gotta be doing something. Then its gotta be different and surprising. After a while, you're reaching further and further into the sewer just for that blast of excitement to reach the same level of arousal and interest.

The idea that maybe you're getting too much stimulation and should lay off a while doesn't seem to really sink in. So you're into hermaphrodite goat porn not because you really like that but because its the only thing that's fresh and surprising any more.
