Mark Sanford Loses Primary; NeverTrumpers, Get This, Freak Out and Begin Calling for a GOP Wipeout in the 2018 Elections

#Resistance hero Mark Sanford lost, for reasons probably having little to do with Trump -- Trump's tweet came when polls were almost closed, and Trump probably tweeted because he'd heard Sanford was likely to lose, based on exit polls, and wanted a piece of that scalp -- but the never-ending NeverTrump Twitter Circle Jerk went into conniptions anyway.

And if Democrats don't sweep in 2018, then he says they must sweep in 2020:

True Conservative, y'all!

Hey, maybe join Bill Maher in his prayer that the country re-enter a painful recession, if this is so vital and all.

I wrote about the pressure I felt to join the NeverTrump circle jerk. I predicted, accurately, that NeverTrump, having put itself into a position of relentless hostility and liberal-like We're-The-Experts-Here contempt for Republican voters, would simply become a species of nasty partisan Democrat, and that was part (but only part) of the reason I rejected all that.*

Mollie Hemingway notes that outside of the never-ending NeverTrump Twitter Circle Jerk, NeverTrump barely exists at all:

Perhaps it's time to just stop paying attention to whiny babies.

* Weird how I could figure out the unavoidable trajectory of putting oneself into direct opposition to one's party -- that personal feelings and egotistical impulses would, as they always do, begin to harden opposition from an ideological objection to a deeply personal and bitter emotional alienation -- and thereby lead, inevitably, to finding a new group of Political Friends to be friendly friends with, but the people who assure us all every single day on Twitter that They're the People Who Really Understand Politics and They're the Experts and Serious You Guys They Went to College and Stuff couldn't figure this fucking shit out, and in fact still can't 18 months later.

Do they not understand human psychology, human social group dynamics, and the natural (if regrettable) tendency to magnify differences between In-Group and Out-Group to create higher In-Group solidarity and higher levels of hatred towards the Out-Group?

Did they never notice the tendency of any insular group of like-minded individuals to become more extreme and "purified" in their groupthink, and more extreme in denouncing unbelievers?

Do they not know about the tendency of members of insular groups to compete with each other to ever more stridently proclaim Group Dogmas in a kind of competition to demonstrate Group Loyalty and Group Belongingness?

Did they not realize that they, being human, would wind up going down that path themselves? Did they imagine they were so virtuous and intellectual (hey, just look a their prodigious Twitter Output!!!) that they were immune to such group dynamics?

Wait-- I thought they were the Experts About Politics and All Other Things Too. They tell me so on Twitter every fucking day.

Do they really not understand any of this?

Did they think they were too smart to behave like all other human beings have since we came down from the trees?

And, on that point: I hate to say this, Geniuses, but you don't seem that smart to me. You seem on the dim side of the Average College Graduate to me.

I continue being infinitely amused by a group behaving in the most primitive tribal fashion forming a new tribe and demonizing the old tribe bemoaning the tribalism of the tribe they've decided to make war on for believing in slightly different things than they do.

37 So, I live in SC-1, and I voted for Sanford yesterday.

I've always liked him despite the anti-Trumpism because of his fiscal conservatism that always felt very genuine.

Fiscal conservatism is a good thing.

However, that being said, it was pretty obvious for a while that he was going to lose.

His opponent's yard signs were everywhere. Sanford's were here and there, several years old (the exact same signs used in his original bid for the special election a few years ago), and felt like an afterthought. Where Arrington's signs were up and down most streets, Sanford would have one here or there at some busy intersections.

The mood of the district was obviously against him.

And I don't really blame my neighbors for their choice. Is it helpful to conservatism when you have a member of the Freedom Caucus going onto MSNBC to browbeat Trump all the time? No, it's not, and I can understand why my neighbors decided that they needed other representation in Congress.

As to his future? I care as much about Sanford's future as I do for any other former politicians, which is not much.

I'll vote for Arrington in the general, but I'm still a bit sad to see Sanford go.

NeverTrumpism is a Twitter/old media phenomenon. It doesn't meaningfully exist in real world. So we should not be surprised that groupthink that gets you Twitter attaboys isn't the path to success in GOP primaries. This message is brought to you by the years 2016, 2017, and 2018.

Many of us wanted a complete upheaval of the GOP, and tbh I thought we would need a 3rd party to overcome the establishment. A 3rd party was risky because the Dems could clutch wins from that point on into eternity, so this is a much easier way to get there. But it is being cultivated before our very eyes and the Never Trumpers are losing their grip (and money) on what establishment is left. Some are jumping ship (Ryan). Amazing times.

Or they award it to him and like everyone else turns theirs in (excepting for the cash).

171 I don't think it's weird at all that you figured it out: you're not a hater. And especially not a hater bent on full-monty hating.

All the talk about the NTers being NTers because they need to be popular with the right people is a small truth. The large truth is that "they hates Trumpses forever" because their precious tastes have been deeply offended and they lost any power they were convinced they had, to influence.

As crazy as they are, I don't think they imagine they can influence the faithful of their enemy?

Bret Stephens is the best example of a wigged-out, we've got to teach our rubes a lesson, and how.

They all have, and will continue to have, enough money. But it can't buy them a non-partisan ear, to say nothing of respect.

Someone ought to commence a study on how offended taste has guided history.

Simple, Hillary didn't win.

From 2008-2016, they saw that they could author books that laid out their idealized version of Conservatism while knowing that they had a Democrat in the White House that would not do anything conservative. So, they were the "True Conservative Vanguard".
Now, they can't write books on how bad President Hillary is, and they have to sit back and watch their leftist friends rake in the $$$ bitching about how Donny Two Scoops is giving them a serious case of the butthurts.

They know even more than we do that, after watching Sandfords beating yesterday, every Republican in Congress now knows that they have to kiss up to Trump to keep their jobs.

And that means the NeverTrumpers have lost all of their influence and all of their allies who matter. Which apparently is why they're now hoping for Democrats to win, just like Mahler is hoping for a recession. Eric Erickso was whining about this over on his blog, too.

Here's the actual, objective Truth, neverTrumpers - you no longer have a place in the Republican party, that's over. Why should the burden be on us, and not on the foreign families that deliberately put their own children in danger by putting them in the hands of cartels and coyotes, or marching them across a hot desert with inadequate supplies? If these families cared anything about the safety and well-being of their children, they obviously wouldn't do that.

U.S. taxpayers spend billions of dollars every year providing shelter, food, medical care, and other types of services to these "loving" families who turn their own children over to vicious cartels and human smugglers, or who put their childrens' lives at risk in the hot desert, in order to get them illegally across our border. We don't owe their criminally irresponsible, law-breaking parents a damn thing, and quite frankly, separating these kids from their lousy parents is probably the best thing we could ever do for them.

It also tells me that he is a self righteous sanctimonious fuck who thinks what HE wants is always going to be more important than what anyone else wants, including those who voted for him. You may be too young to have learned that is the hallmark of a man who will Betray You at the drop of a hat.

While many not in the know in the horde assumed that his nomination would lead to a Republican loss, I knew - well, projected - differently.

Sanford was at one time one of the good guys. He was a good governor until his little head took over.

He ran for a seat in the House that he had held before.

He was a good candidate for SC.

Until he went #neverTrump. SC is almost West Virginia-like in its Trumpiness. Sanford runs into the problem that ace points out in this post - once you decide you are in opposition to your team, it isn't really your team anymore.

The older I get, the less patience and respect I have for guys like me, who pontificate and speak and write all about stuff but do nothing and accomplish nothing. At no point does that help the world, reach out to anyone, glorify God, or help a single person. All it is, is a sort of masturbation, going over stuff that you think about then telling people who'll clap like seals.

364 Question: if not the Republican party, where are the NeverTrumpers going to go? Ideological enforcement within the Democrats is so Stalinist that any deviation will be brutally punished. What are they going to do, set up the New Whig Party?"

THIS is why the NeverTrumpers are so upset, because after yesterday they are suddenly having to face up to how false all of their assumptions have been so far. (Erick Erickson has a piece up lamenting this as well) They are OUT of the Republican Party, BUT they can never be part of the Dem Party either, even if they wanted to - the Dem's won't have them, either. And they have NO body of voters who they can influence, that's what they are figuring out.

What this means is that Politics is no longer the place for them. They need to fold up their blogs, quit writing, close their offices, fire their interns, and go run a nice pancake house somewhere. And Shut Up for the Rest of their Lives, while other people take over the responsibility for determining this countries direction.

They are Out of the Game, whether they want to be or not.

No, actually -- the whole purpose of the measure is to unleash the power of the state's disenfranchised conservatives.

As things now stand, California one vast voting bloc -- a voting bloc on which the Left has an unbreakable headlock. ~55% of the state is liberal, so the 45% non-liberals get completely silenced in statewide and national elections. ALL our electors always go to the Dems. ALL leftist proposal in the state ALWAYS pass.

But once California is divided up, there will be three states: Uber-liberal coastal Northern California, uber-conservative inland California, and toss-up Southern California. So now a bunch of our electors in presidential elections will go to the conservative candidate, instead of them ALL going to the Dem. The proposal is basically an anti-gerrymandering proposal. I'm definitely voting for it.

Something similar actually happened here. We had a GOPe rep who really was an asshat. He got in back in the 1990s on a I won't serve more than two terms and of course he was still in there. So, so hard to vote for him every two years. I prayed someone would primary him, but it never happened.

Then people finally got sick of his shit and voted in a Dem. Then two years later the Dem gets tossed for another Republican.

It sucks that such a roundabout way is necessary to get rid of deadwood, but unless they can get blown out in a primary, that's what has to happen.

In Arizona, this explains why McCain always stayed at least nominally popular, while Flake has descended into 18% approval or whatever. It wasn't about ideology, or even Trump so much - the McCain organization at least believed in helping out constituents, working the system for them when they needed a favor. Flake, being such a good Libertarian, decided Government shouldn't be doing those kinds of things or playing favorites, so when constituents would call him for help, his staffers routinely told them go Fuck Off.

And THAT is how you get an 18% approval rating. Brilliant man, that Jeff Flake is.

The decision was to form a party within the Republican ranks that would vote for mainly Republicans that had "Tea Party" values. Because we didn't want to split the vote.

These days, the same people who said that they always lose because even when they try to hide staunch conservatives in the closet they never fully shut up--or cease to exist, then say they're hoping the Dems win, rather than vote for *GOP* candidates that are not PoS (Party of State).

469 But once California is divided up, there will be three states: Uber-liberal coastal Northern California, uber-conservative inland California, and toss-up Southern California.

That's not the proposed split.

California will be electorally dominated by LA (the county that provided Hillary's entire popular vote margin.) So, 2 Democrat Senators.

Northern California will be dominated by San Francisco, Oakland, Silicon Valley, and Sacramento. So, 2 Democrat Senators.

Southern California is maybe... MAYBE... purple at best. But more likely, blue San Diego and Riverside will outvote the sparsely populated interior.

https://tinyurl.com/y9cstpue

It's actually a non-intuitive irrational way to split up the state, in which the natural political lines are ignored. But nonetheless, as depicted:

The Los Angeles/Central Coast New State would be guaranteed Democratic, because it contains Los Angeles.

The "Southern California"/Inland Empire state would be guaranteed conservative, because it contains all the high-population conservative urban areas.

The "Northern California" new-state would be a toss-up; even though it contains the SF Bay Area, it also contains the northern central Valley and all the back-country areas. I'm not sure of the population balance, but I think the state would be in toss-up territory.

I went back and re-read that post, and in fact it is a Cris de Couer against the GOP-e, and the way they had been doing business for at least 10 years at that point.

MOST conservatives felt that way at the time - THAT is why we chose Trump! Now it was not obvious at the time that Trump was going to be the answer to those complaints we had - I was very skeptical through the primaries. After he was nominated, I supported him, but did not believe he could win (I still trusted the MSM too much)

AFTER his win, I realized 2 very important things: First, Trump is one of those rare guys who can actually do things that I think are impossible, and Second, the MSM lied constantly about him and about everything else throughout the campaign, and that I actually should not believe anything they tell me. Those two realizations alone marked a radical change in my thinking about everything political.

497 Holy crap Sylvia is still being put out. You might think I was exaggerating with my description

https://www.gocomics.com/sylvia

It looks like something a 4 year old would crank out using MS Paint, then written by his embittered cat lady aunt who works at the DMV

498 I posted the earlier comment because it seems to run counter to "Weird how I could figure out the unavoidable trajectory of putting oneself into direct opposition to one's party", and some squaring of that circle could be enlightening.

500 Oh, FFS.
Quit ragging on Delaware.
It would be a lovely state if they just cut off that northern Wilmington blob.
Give it to Maryland. And give Delaware the MD Eastern Shore in return.
Then give Western Maryland to W VA.
And give Maryland DC and NoVA (Fairfax/Arlington) as compensation.

Voila! Deep blue Maryland (no change.)
Pink Virginia. Red Delaware. Hope! Change!

501 Dondi was terrible. I didn't understand it. I didn't understand why you'd write a comic strip that wasn't funny and contained no fantastical elements. It was just some chubby-faced kid walking around and crap.

Because they fear a sea change, which means they would have to get a real job. Trump's election in 2016 absolutely, in their world view, can not be vindicated.

503 The "Northern California" new-state would be a toss-up; even though it contains the SF Bay Area, it also contains the northern central Valley and all the back-country areas. I'm not sure of the population balance, but I think the state would be in toss-up territory.

San Francisco Bay + Oakland + Sacramento + San Jose versus... a bunch of sparsely populated counties. I don't see how you can call that a toss-up.

507 We should start pushing to get Zombie on the ballot for governor of Southern California. Sure she'd have to move, but it's probably our best bet to get one of our own into higher office.

508 The "Southern California"/Inland Empire state would be guaranteed
conservative, because it contains all the high-population conservative
urban areas.

except neither the IE, Orange County nor Insane Diego are all that conservative any more... you can color it purple, trending blue.

i predict all 3 would be Dem, which means 6 idiot Senators where we now only have 2.

this is a stupid idea.

510 Silly man. Sanford probably did not lose because of the last minute tweet; but he DID LOSE because he was anti trump and his opponent was PRO TRUMP. That was the entire essence of her campaign. It was NOT about issues unrelated...etc. I live in the district.

511 Tribalism for wveeybody but White Chrsitian Men and women. Shocking that when playing by the rules forced upon us, this majority on America would rise up to the dismay of everybody else's tribe who only have shaming and name calling and screams of its not fair.

Idiots. But thanks for making the strong case of putting nationalsom and Americans First at the forefront as the new majority based party which is forming.

514 Do they not understand ...
Did they never notice ...
Do they not know ...
Did they not realize ...

Do they really not understand any of this?

To be charitable, I think that they did. But overriding all of this that they cannot admit to it; they cannot be wrong to the eyes of the deplorables.

515 You understate the effect of Trump's tweet. The margin was 2500 votes, and Sanford is popular among conservatives from way back, an original Tea Party guy who I think was the first governor who refused to expand Medicaid under ObamaCare.
On top of that, Arrington avoided a runoff by just 300 votes with 50.5%.

Trump now has leverage over all the Republicans who've signed that discharge petition, if they are not retiring and still have a primary. Will he use it?

516 There are no #nevertreump conservatives. This tiny and ever shrinking group of dog turds are simply liberal uniparty operatives who claim to be conservatives so they can attempt to operate behind "enemy" lines.

They're "conservative" in the sense that they love them some fancy cocktail parties, (leftist) megacorporations, and being just as enthusiastic about bloated government as long as they're the ones who get to steer the ship. (or in lieu of that, virtue-signal about how much better they'd steer)

In other words, yeah, you're right, but they think they're "conservative" because they want to give tax money handouts to corporations while "liberals" want to give handouts to baby butchers. Totally different.
