Soylo Gets Beaten Up by Girls

Solo loses the #1 box office spot the moment a big-budget movie competes with it. In this case, it was Oceans 8, but one imagines any movie with a high profile would have done the job.

Replacement director Ron Howard says he "feels badly" about Soylo's low box office returns. He acknowledged the idea of a "Soycott," sparked by fans pissed off about the Social Justice Wars sequel The Last Jedi.

Note that by responding to this idea, he's thereby sharing that idea with his followers.

There are several theories floating around about the film's lack of commercial success, including the idea that some fans are skipping the film because they didn't enjoy 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

I've been reading so many theories as to why 'Solo' hasn't been doing so well at the box office - sad to say, some SW fans are snubbing Solo b/c they're still upset over Last Jedi. If so, they're missing out & punishing a good film for something not its fault. #StarWars #Solo

— Kris Fairbanks (@kfairbanks2) June 6, 2018

Solo director Ron Howard personally responded to a fan's tweet this weekend about the theory. He said he's proud of the cast and crew and added, "As a director I feel badly when people who I believe (and exit polls show) will very likely enjoy a movie [and] don’t see it on a big screen with great sound."

Soylo will struggle to make even $200 million gross in the North American markets, making it the lowest-grossing Soy Wars movie ever.

As of this writing, Solo has earned $176.1 million domestically, meaning it's about $24 million away from hitting the $200 million mark. At first glance, it sounds like a foregone conclusion it'll get to that point, but there are a number of factors to keep in mind. For starters, interest in Solo is quite low, as evidenced by the film's $15.1 million intake this past weekend. Those numbers are almost definitely going down now with the impending arrival of Incredibles 2, which is expected to post the largest opening in Pixar's storied history. We're also only two weeks away from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and that sequel is also poised to be a massive hit. Solo is going to take a decline with multiplexes getting even more crowded in June.

The Empire Strikes Back was previously the lowest-grossing Star Wars movie, but bear in mind, we're talking about 1980 dollars there, not adjusted for inflation.

So Soylo will make fewer unadjusted, devalued 2018 dollars than the 1980 Empire Strikes Back.

Also, Soylo cost a gigantic fortune to shoot. And reshoot.

The Disney Shill Media and the Social Justice Warrior Praetorian Guard have been scrambled into defense mode, and are running the typical script -- the fandom is "toxic" and sexist and racist and probably voted for Trump.

Rumors surfaced this week that Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy might step down from company leadership in the aftermath of Solo: A Star Wars Story's box office failure. This comes amid rampaging racism, sexism, and other extreme toxic behavior from a segment of mostly male (and mostly white) fans who've taken to harassing female actors and artists for existing.

There is no evidence for this "harassing female actors and artists for existing." This is simply the Lady Ghostbusters playbook, being run after the disaster instead of before it.

By the way, this article is not from the Huffington Post or Buzzfeed; this is from Forbes, which is one of the most obnoxious of the Disney Shill Sites and Social Justice Warrior propaganda outposts.

This is all part of a larger bigoted backlash of complaints against Star Wars for incorporating people of color and other types of diversity into the previously predominantly white male storytelling.

By "other types of diversity," he's referring to the disclosure made by co-screenwriter and talentless nepot Jonathan Kasdan that Lando Calrissian was "pansexual," a statement made to appease the Huffington Post crowd days before the family film's release.

...

This is the same group of fans, remember, whose entire rant is rooted in their own personal politics and a desire to see their personal preferences projected onto the screen while nobody else is entitled to the same right or representation. That enraged reactionaries want to deny everybody else equal representation while demanding their own right to be heard and obeyed is hardly new or shocking, of course. These types of vulgar fans always existed, because fandom is just a portion of the population as a whole, and the population always includes angry self-entitled bigots.

In other words, it's fine to ignore them and to not care what they want or what they say, and to deny them the myopic whitewashed world they demand. They don't deserve representation of their ideas, since their ideas are backward, hateful, and devoid of merit in the first place. If you scream in anger about seeing other people represented, if you harass and insult and threaten marginalized people for daring to exist and to appear in movies, then you and your beliefs have no place in modern storytelling or modern society (except as villains to be defeated and cast aside forever).

Remember, this is Forbes, allegedly a reputable business magazine, and not Buzzfeed for Jezebel.

For balance, Forbes had its other SJW Disney Shill rebut the central claims of that article. Well, not rebut so much as restate.

Interesting, Disney Shill Scott Mendelson leads with a reference to Lady Ghostbusters.

Today is Ghostbusters Day, which supposedly celebrates Ivan Reitman's 1984 sci-fi comedy smash that was rebooted two years ago with Paul Feig's gender-swapped remake. I need not remind you of how that was received from the moment of its announcement, although we should remember that Leslie Jones was temporarily driven off social media after a coordinated troll attack bombarded her feeds with various racist and misogynistic messages. History repeated itself this week after Last Jedi co-star Kelly Marie Tran was driven off Instagram after months of racist and misogynistic comments that coincidentally never seem to be directed at Mark Hamill or Adam Driver.

There is no evidence that Kelly Marie Tran was "driven off" at all. She has made no statement about deactivating her Instagram account.

The Star Wars fans have always had their rotten apples. There are folks who are still mad, 21 years later, that George Lucas inserted CGI into the Star Wars trilogy and made Han Solo "shoot second." I do not know if these are the same folks who graduated to racism and sexism once the new Star Wars movies began putting women and minorities in more front-and-center roles. I tend to believe that these are just garden-variety racists and misogynistic trolls who use Star Wars fandom as a cover, but the clickbait and a reaction-friendly media is helping to turn their assaults into mainstream news and inflating their voice and their numbers.

Yes, you can dislike a Star Wars movie or a Ghostbusters reboot without being an alt-right troll or an incel schmuck.

Gee, thanks, Scott Mendelson.

...

There is a difference between panning a movie or even passionately discussing a movie you disliked, and verbally assaulting an artist over that movie.

...

If those engaging in this manbaby behavior keep getting the media to pay enough attention that they become part of the narrative, they will keep winning. Toxic fandom is nothing new.

...

You can't entirely ignore evil. But giving them the attention they so desire partially so you can clap back or offer a perfect response doesn't help either.

I cant help but feel that Disney is pushing this idea out there. Scott Mendelson is a reliable transmitter of whatever nonsense spin his Khalisi Kathleen Kennedy would like to see in the media.

I do not expect Star Wars fans will enjoy being called sexist, racist, backwards and deserving of eternal defeat from the company that hopes to sell them tickets in the future.

Hey bigots, racists, sexists and manbabies, buy tickets for our movies or else.

Ethan Van Sciver discusses Disney weaponizing the media against its actual customers in this video. And this one. I enjoyed his personal attack on effete soibois.

Social Justice Warriors blaming their failures and incompetencies on Racist and Sexist White Men -- how unexpected!

There are parts of that movie that aren't really very defensible in terms of their narrative contribution to the whole film (and I overall like The Last Jedi).

I mean, how do you justify the Casino Planet distraction? It's vital to the movie? To its themes?

By no means was it a horrific raping of the source material and injection and pure liberal trash into a formerly great franchise, like TLJ was.

It...was okay. They did a not terrible representation of Han, Lando and Chewy (faint praise I know, but that's where SW is now.) They did a decent job creating an okay movie. Yeah some of the writing was bad, and yeah most of it was predictable.

But it didn't massacre Star Wars like TLJ and to an extent FA.

But Solo is most certainly facing the backlash of those two movies.

71 What they don't seem to get is that people like female leads, if they are well written and entertaining female leads. We cheered on Ripley in Aliens, we loved watching Sarah Conner in Terminator. We don't give a damn if its a boy or a girl if you just make a decent movie.

If you make a crappy movie, then people hate it no matter who the star is. Remember Hudson Hawk? I think there was like one woman in the entire film (God save us from Sarah Bernhardt) but people despised it because it was a crappy movie.

This is so basic and obvious and no-brainer. Its clear to anyone sane.

Howard had an impossible job to do.

Save a movie 75% of the way through production (by reshooting almost everything that had been shot).

I like Howard (Apollo 13 and Rush!), but he's a technician more than a storyteller. Someone competent who can bring a good script to life, not someone who can find worth in something that doesn't already have it.

Posted by: TheJamesMadison at June 11, 2018 02:39 PM (Hy0dE)

74 well, having read that, I can officially remove myself from star wars fandom. and man, that really hurts.

I skipped Solo because last jedi wasn't that great, and the sjw posturing that has nothing to do with the story, it's sole purpose was to make the children feels better.

but since I'm a racist, misogynist, bigot, etc. then they don't need my polluted money. fuck them in the squeekhole with some rusty rebar.

76 Also, if they had a good story, Star Wars fans would show up to a Star Wars movie staring RuPaul in draggiest drag that ever dragged. Or something.

Great business model. Write unwatchable movies that are sure to piss-off your core audience in order to placate the people you share cocktail party space with but who will never, ever watch said movie. Then, when the movie bombs predictably, you react with anger at your core audience in order to further placate the people you share cocktail party space with but who will never, ever watch said movie.

Later. Rinse. Repeat.

Bankrupt.

80 I finally saw the Female Ghostbusters (free, on cable, of course) and what jumped out at me was first, how heavily they relied on a few sight gags from the first movie Ectoplasmic slime was done a little bit in the first one, so this one had to do it over and over and over, in a gross amount. By the 4th or 5th time it lost any effectiveness whatsoever.

Also, I was surprised by how badly edited the movie was - don't see that in a big budget production. Towards the end, the movie puts all this time and effort into setting up this big dance scene in Times Square with Chris Hemsworth and the Army guys, and the get right up to it - and it's just dropped. It's a jarring break, it's like what, did someone cut part of the movie out for commercials? finally in the credits you seem some of the footage that was supposed to go there.

The point isn't that it was good or bad - it's that if you're going to spend 10 full minutes of the movie setting up one particular scene, then don't just cut that scene and hope your audience won't notice. For that alone, I would rate it as a remarkably badly made film.

The fans who are protesting are the ones who love the SW Universe for what it was: a place for storytelling about the struggle of good vs. evil.

The true toxic fandom is the one that eventually consumes every fucking SF/fantasy product: the SJWs who want it to be about them and their pet causes. The fat, green-haired, horn-rimmed glasses wearing scrunts who write endlessly about how a minor Harry Potter character is actually polyamorous queer fairy-kin and ohmygod isn't that so great!? The Star Wars universe should have no problem finding stories to tell. The idea of a galaxy-wide war between magic-wielding space monks which destroys the old order has a huge amount of potential. All of it squandered.

144 There are several theories floating around about the film's lack of
commercial success, including the idea that some fans are skipping the
film because they didn't enjoy 2017's Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

And by 'didn't enjoy' what we mean is 'recognized everyone in a decision making position involved in this picture hates me because I'm white, I'm a man, and I like star wars, and am therefore not part of the freakshow that is Disney's preferred demographic'.

154 How did Will Smith and Denzel Washington become such big box office stars? As members of one of those "marginalized" identity groups, all those raaaaaacist white fans should have ensured that they were box office poison.

Same with that Gal Godot. How did her movie make so much money? All those misogynistic, raaaaaacist white fans surely could not have paid money to see a movie in which a mere woman played the lead!

Disney, and Kathleen Kennedy or whoever is putting this shit out there on Disney's behalf, is full of it. Movie fans, white or not, will pay to see movies that are reasonably good, no matter who the lead actors are. They'll pay to see black guys, they'll pay to see women, they'll pay to see women who are black (see, e.g., Halle Berry, Vanessa Williams, etc.) in lead roles, if the movie is any good. What they won't pay to see is shitty movies that feature women and minorities in lead roles not because they're good actors, but because they're "marginalized" people and the raaaaaacist fans need to be taught some stupid lesson about "inclusion" by the holier-than-thou studio "elites."

It smells sweet ....not sweetly.
It tastes sour....not sourly.
Pelosi looks insane ....not insanely.
Trudeau feels pretty ....not prettily.

225 177 I don't think this is all that complicated. They thought they could keep pumping out SW movies and they would all make money like the Marvel films have.

It turns out the Marvel model doesn't work for everyone, just like it won't for Marvel at some point.
Posted by: Cm9000 at June 11, 2018 02:54 PM (fRU2t)

================

Marvel works for some specific reasons.

First, is the shared universe that took time to build. I'm far from original in saying that Marvel did universe building right, and they did.

Second is the interconnectedness of the movies without actually relying too much on each other. You can watch Captain America: Civil War without seeing any of the others and still get a general idea of what's happened before hand.

Third is the basic competence of the movies themselves. I'm far from a Marvel-fanboy, but they're well made and, bottom line, entertaining first.

VII tried to be entertaining first, and most people forgave it its flaws. Rogue One mostly fell in the same venue (although I felt like it fell flat).

VIII was a mishmash, but where it worked best wasn't exactly fun. It was about Luke rejecting Star Wars to a certain extent, which rubbed people the wrong way (the movie turns around and re-embraces it by the end).

232 Maybe the movie was just telling a story that people didn't feel the need to see?

The main character already had a character arc over the course of 3 movies. We didn't need to see how he became a misanthropic semi-bad dude.

Disney is really missing the big benefit of creating these cinematic universes. From an artistic perspective, the cinematic universe lets you take shortcuts with exposition and tell a new story in an interesting way. It doesn't mean you have to focus on the same handful of characters.

If you're filming a WWII movie, you don't need to tell the audience "see, these good guys are fighting this bad dude named Hitler...." we all already know why Hitler is bad and what the stakes are. Rogue 1 did this well. It was grounded in the things we already knew, but the characters we were familiar with already were not the focus of the movie.

Solo did this the the exact wrong way. If there was an interesting story that wanted to be told here in this timeframe, Ham Solo should not have been the focus. The movie should have been about Lando. Donald Glover actually did a good job with the character. Forget the pansexual crap. That didn't come across in the movie itself. He could have carried a story as the lead. And they could have had Han and Chewie as side characters that show up and leave as the plot requires.

240 Lucas continued to say the ewoks where meant to represent the Viet Cong and the Storm Troopers the American Military

Lucas is bad about retconning and reimagining his past. Its like his remake of Star Wars with new stuff added in digitally. He just makes up whole cloth what he "meant" or "intended" without the slightest bit of shame. If you listen to an interview when Star Wars came out and now, its a completely different story. Now he had this huge 9-part grand story in mind to tell, and always intended stuff like Leia to be Luke's sister and Vader's kids. Its all BS. The guy has an active fantasy life but its all in his head and about him.

Marvel released two blockbusters within weeks of each other, and pulled it off.

Disney: "Hey, we're just going to make a visual social justice parade and shit over all of your old heroes. You like the lecturing, right?

Marvel: "Here's a talking raccoon and his pet walking tree. They blow stuff up."

And Disney, for all of its billions, can't figure out why people are avoiding their product.

"There are many who find a good alibi far more attractive than an achievement. For an achievement does not settle anything permanently. We still have to prove our worth anew each day: we have to prove that we are as good today as we were yesterday. But when we have a valid alibi for not achieving anything we are fixed, so to speak, for life. Moreover, when we have an alibi for not writing a book, painting a picture, and so on, we have an alibi for not writing the greatest book and not painting the greatest picture. Small wonder that the effort expended and the punishment endured in obtaining a good alibi often exceed the effort and grief requisite for the attainment of a most marked achievement. "

352 It's not about the movies. It's about Peak SJW and the tipping point where SJW shit begins to cost the media real money.

This is something that kind of frustrates me here. You'll take an event or person's statement to launch off to a point you want to make, say about culture or history of psychology of modern people, and most of the commenters only see the launching point, not what you're trying to say.

I'm guilty of that at times, too. Its like you make a great point and nobody even wants to talk about it. Everyone says they love ace (and we do) but its like you come to a party and everyone loves the snacks you brought but ignores you standing in the corner.

We're shown the flashback of Luke's attempt to kill hid nephew in his sleep three times, but we're merely *told* that Luke had a bad dream about Ben becoming some galaxy threatening evil. Which doesn't work. We needed to have seen what Luke saw, particularly given the fact that we know that Luke knows all force visions are merely possible futures.
Certainly nothing that happened in 7 or 8 rose to the level of 'kill him in his sleep.'

356 >>>331 I quote Eric Hoffer, again, because relevant to all SJW/Lib/Left fails:

...

============

Counterpoint that I haven't really thought through very deeply:

When you show something in a movie, audiences trust it more than dialogue. I remember this coming up in regards to Branagh's adaptation of Hamlet because we see Claudius pouring the poison into Hamlet the Elder's ear. After that, there was no doubt in the audience's mind about the veracity of the ghost's claims or even the reality of the ghost.

Taking this back to that scene in TLJ:

If we had seen the vision, we would automatically believe that it was inevitable, and the point of that scene is that it wasn't inevitable. Luke's doubt was what drove him to the attempt on Ben's life. Seeing the possible future would bias the audience towards Luke's original plan of action instead of the revised one (as it stands, there's no visual bias in the scene).

With the flashforward, we'd know that Ben's rise was inevitable, no matter what anyone else says. Without it, we don't know, it falls back down to individual character choices. Ben/Kylo still has choices on how to proceed.

Again, half-thought out, but that's kind of my point, I guess.

Greenlighting such an article is the surprise in itself. Blame is being tossed around in the Mouse House and people's careers are on the line. Someone really wanted to get their excuse out to the public before the big cleansing fire from on high gets going, perhaps thinking that if we blame it all on sexists, racists, Nazis, and homo-haters we can survive this one.

I do not know if that tactic will work. If it does *not* work then the SJWs are going to catch the backhand slap of the century, and it will be a sign to others to start ignoring the SJWs and stop indulging stupid and start getting the production line back on track.

It's not about hating strong female leads, I still say "Aliens" is one of the best sc-fi films of all time with Sigourney Weaver being the hero.

...

Disagree on Wonder Woman. As Mollie Hemingway observed, Wonder Woman was a female action hero in which she remained essentially, fundamentally FEMALE throughout the film.

They didn't just make her a Dude With Tits. She didn't act like a dude or think like a dude. Well, a little, as far as thinking violence was the solution to all problems. But she was of course trained as warrior all her life, so that's her training talking.

But she felt womanly (or sometimes girlish -- she was quite naive) throughout the movie.

Hollywood's usual move for "bad ass women" is just to write them as cynical jackass men.

414 316 Zoe Quinn has zero experience in the industry, has shown (per her twitter feed) zero interest in comics, and has zero accomplishments even in her alleged metier of video game design.

Almost all the other new Vertigo titles are SJW crap too.

They're explicitly branded as "socially conscious."

The Quartering has an interesting take on all of that: basically he feels it's all a smokescreen to distract from the heads rolling at DC, chiefly the firing of DC's female head. It's delicious irony if so. It would mean Zoe Quinn, et al are acting as agents of "Teh Patriarchy!!!" unknowingly!

415 405 If we had seen the vision, we would automatically believe that it was inevitable, and the point of that scene is that it wasn't inevitable. Luke's doubt was what drove him to the attempt on Ben's life. Seeing the possible future would bias the audience towards Luke's original plan of action instead of the revised one (as it stands, there's no visual bias in the scene).

Maybe. It didn't exactly work in Superman vs Batman.

442 Disagree on Wonder Woman. As Mollie Hemingway observed, Wonder Woman was a female action hero in which she remained essentially, fundamentally FEMALE throughout the film.

And she was heroic. She was straight up, "this is the right thing to do, so I'm just gonna do it no matter what" and cared nothing for her own safety or self, only what was right to do.

I have my complaints with the film: the treatment of women was not like that in the 40s, even in England. They're acting like it was Victorian England and even then women weren't treated like that. Like ace said, the ending was a letdown particularly for WW fans (she's god now? She can just do anything? She doesn't even have a powerset now, just wish powers??). And there are little bits like taking an open boat from Turkey to England in like a day or taking out a few soldiers in a trench totally liberates an entire town. But overall it was much, much better than DC had been giving us, and delightfully so.

My take is simpler. People are screwed up and rather than deal with their own issues, they grab onto some cause or other to become militant about, thereby avoiding self reflection and virtue-signalling at the same time, so that people think they really have their shit together.

And then, when said cause peters out, they grab another one or they flame out completely.

Thanks for bringing this stuff to my attention, ace.
(I otherwise would not follow this crap. Though I think it is worth a person being made aware of.)

Due to this your post, I am now an ex-Star Wars fan.
That's not trivial.
I grew up on Star Wars. Somewhere, I still have "My Jedi Journal" which on the hard cover displayed a very adept artist's depiction of Yoda in his hovel holding open a scroll making notes by candle light. When I was a kid I used to consider myself a 'Jedi in training' (-whatever that was).

For those demented SJWs who claim that we are the bad guys for disliking a self-ruined brand, there is one easy move to take against them:
"YOU ARE DELUSIONAL PARANOIDS WHO CONJURE PHANTASMAL BOGEYMEN SIMPLY BECAUSE NO ONE WANTS TO EAT YOUR SICK DOG FOOD."

********************

Ace, I have two truly GREAT film recommendations:
_Small Town Crime_ starring John Hawkes..
Hawkes also starred in the awesomely excellent _Too Late_.

Both of these films are tremendous. Please check them out. You will not regret viewing either of them.
(_Too Late_ is more of an 'art' film.
_Small Town Crime_ is more the straightforward narrative. But both are great films with great performances.)

490 Mindless screams of "keep your politics out of my entertainment" abound from that corner of fandom ignorant of the most basic facts about what the films say and represent (the Empire's designs and titles were heavily influenced by fascism and Nazi imagery - Forbes

I thought the screams were "What happened to the entertainment? It's all a blatant attempt to push the pc narrative".

And there's a difference between what he's calling "politics" in the earlier and the Disney films. Having a story of good vs evil and importing some imagery from an evil regime in a subtle way that does really impact the story differs from having some feminist scold who is basically saying "haha! I've taken over the franchise, and now I will pedantically shake my finger at you and hit you over the head with politically correct object lessons about the struggle against sexism", where that takes priority over character motivations and plot.

We know how resilient Superman and Luke Cage are (almost completely). We know how resilient Daredevil and Batman are (almost not at all, except for some light armoring).

What about Spiderman, Captain America, and Wonder Woman? Clearly they are much, much stronger than average people. Are their muscles a kind of half-armor, due to being so dense?

Who knows. THey act like they could get hurt by conventional means yet when, for example, Captain America is blown out of a fourth story window by an explosion and lands on his head on an armored car and then rag-dolls to the ground, he's only unconscious for 15 seconds.

567 >>>552 Gal Gadot doesn't do anything for me as WW. Yeah, I get she's a gorgeous super model but personally, meh.

she does a lot for me and she's not even the type I usually like.

She did a bit on Conan showing her training for the film, and she could deliver a roundhouse kick to a standing man's head.

I dug that.

But she just seems very cool anyway. When SJW Ezra Miller (last seen defiling the Flash in Justice League) insisted on her reading an SJW slogan as part of a promotion for the Justice League movie, she refused, and continued gracefully deflecting even when this jackass kept insisting she repeat his line.

So #Woke of him, to demand that a woman do what he, a man (?), tells her to!

And obviously, she's beautiful.

570 It never ceases to amaze me that movie makers completely ignore the immensely popular romance novel formula. This is also used in most werewolf, vampire, science fiction books. There is a strong, virile alpha male who sets out to protect the female protagonist who turns out to be feisty, able, smart and clever who demands to be a partner in the action. They then proceed to fall in love after much sexual tension and escaping, running, battling, and destroying the bad guys.
So, women want to see a great male body(ideally shirtless) who has all the money in the world due to amazing success in life and strong protective instincts as well as the skill to deal with bad guys. And, men want to see beautiful women in scanty clothing falling into bed with said hero. Therefore something for both sexes.

580 I guess this has nothing to do with anything, but i just thought of how Beowulf doesn't really have an "origin" story, but contains it's own "end" story. And a lot of old literature did as well.

Nobody cared about "origin", they cared about who you were and what you did, and often what you sacrificed. "How did he/she meet his/her end?" was more often the hot question about a fictional or mythical character.

Don't know what that says about anything in general, it's just amusing that the focus seems so heavy on origin stories for fictional characters.

I mean, how many times was Brendon Frasier's character killed in The Mummy? Remember Spider-Man falling onto the car in the first Sam Raimi movie? Iron Man falling 800 feet head first into the sand in the first film?

Its become kind of a trope now, with your hero taking hits that would murder anyone, and shaking them off after the camera cuts away.

614 These guys really don't get it. We don't mind more characters in the SW 'Verse. No one got pissed at the strong women in Rogue One or Rebels. No, the problem is that you trashed the core of the franchise with a nothing Mary Sue in order to massage your own SJW egos. You let your coolest character get killed off by a Harry Potter reject villain in order to fulfill your fantasy of stomping on cool maleness. (And who really believes that THAT would be the product of a Solo/Leia union? They couldn't get the Eastwood kid or get him for Soylo?). People aren't pissed at diversity, they're pissed at poor storytelling! We're supposed to believe Mary Sue Rey can beat a trained Force user the very first time she picks up a lightsaber? Without a scratch? Even the Chosen One got his hand chopped off the first time he met a sith, and he was trained for years. To say nothing of his son, who also got de-handed after being trained by the greatest Jedi of all.
We want good (for SW anyway) storytelling. We want Character arcs respected. We don't want SJW lectures. We want consistency in the SW universe.

========

Several years ago, there was a "naked gun" style parody movie called Violence of the Hams, with the role of detective as "Joe D. Foster".

I think it's time to maybe to a serious remake of Silence of the Lambs with a male character in the Starling role, just to see how the SJWs react. Or maybe 48 hours, with a white guy.

Star Wars IX will do away with the traditional title card/crawl and
instead Kathleen Kennedy will give the middle finger to the audience for
a full five minutes.

640 The truth is, action movies have gotten into
patterns where they have their heroes suffer unsurvivable damage
regularly then get up and keep fighting. I mean, how many times was
Brendon Frasier's character killed in The Mummy? Remember Spider-Man
falling onto the car in the first Sam Raimi movie? Iron Man falling 800
feet head first into the sand in the first film?

Its become kind of a trope now, with your hero taking hits that
would murder anyone, and shaking them off after the camera cuts away.

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at June 11, 2018 04:03 PM (39g3+)

On that note, I watched the movie, The Raid this weekend. Talk about your gloriously unrealistic, unrelenting action that SHOULD kill anyone engaged in it.

But I loved it!

It was so over the top, and the amazing thing was, the actors doing all the action scenes, without any apparent break. Granted, they weren't really hitting one another, but the choreography of the fights... seriously, if you haven't seen this movie, and you like action, you should treat yourself.

Yes,it's Indonesian, dubbed into English, but good gosh darnit, that does NOT matter one whit.

They take their lane in the middle....always. At stop lights, all the mopeds on the road (and there are a ton) will swarm around your car to get in front of you.

Most young children of expats learn to swear while in the car with their moms.

642 It is for non-superheroes also, Mike Tyson in his prime couldn't take hits like geriatric Liam Neeson does in these movies.

A solid punch from a hand in a boxing glove can knock
a prize fighter out cold, what do you think a bat to the head is going to do?

Makes it more fun to watch though, real fights go quick.
Posted by: Maritime at June 11, 2018 04:09 PM (lKmt3)

Also, every punch is a telegraphed haymaker that takes three full seconds to execute, but the last time anyone dodged a punch in an action movie is never.

643 It is for non-superheroes also, Mike Tyson in his prime couldn't take hits like geriatric Liam Neeson does in these movies.

The first film I saw like that was Die Hard, where Bruce Willis punches Alexander Gudonov like 18 times, then crashes his head into an iron pipe and proceeds to punch him 18 more times with his head against the pipe. At this point he should be picking bone pieces and brains out of his fist.

Then he wraps Alexander's neck in a chain and hangs him. Minutes later, we see him still hanging limply from the chain as the terrified civilians run by. And yet somehow he's still alive at the end???

645 What about Spiderman, Captain America, and Wonder Woman? Clearly they are much, much stronger than average people. Are their muscles a kind of half-armor, due to being so dense?

Who knows. THey act like they could get hurt by conventional means yet when, for example, Captain America is blown out of a fourth story window by an explosion and lands on his head on an armored car and then rag-dolls to the ground, he's only unconscious for 15 seconds.

---------------------

I always wonder the same thing whenever Tony Stark is tossed around inside The Suit.

Sure, The Suit is made out of materials that can withstand the abuse, but he's still along for the ride inside, and it looks like there is precious little padding on the interior.

The Suit, Captain's Shield, whatever else gets made out of Wakandan Awesometal, sure, the stuff can "absorb all vibrations." Physics still mandates that the energy goes somewhere.

Heat? OK. So Captain's Shield would eventually get too hot to hold.

In general, though, I think the mystery of where the lines are drawn between vulternable and impervious is what keeps the audience engaged. Whoa, they weren't fazed by that! Oh no, this looks like it really hurt them. You're never sure, so you're never going to look away.

Unfortunately, this is why adults can never go back to storylines they enjoyed as a child. We expect consistent results. And we passed high school science.

That whole sequence was so forced, and all to make Admiral Purple Dye look like a real leader.
And the sad thing is, as others have noted, if she just had the line "We've got a spy aboard, and I can't reveal my plan until we find him" could have solved a bunch of problems with that subplot.
Of course then Flynn couldn't have had his interstellar Casino Royale, and saved the space horses while letting the actual human slave children stay enslaved.
Yeah, on second thought, there was no saving that movie.

Do these strange ideas emanate from the fiery cauldrons in our places of learning?

I remember there being a big push to study "white trash". The douches loved looking at hicks and laughing. It was around that time humor started to be sucked out of everything, and replaced with scat, piss and meanness. There was one comic in particular that wore a trucker hat, had a big dumb beard and looked like an idiot with big glasses. he was unfunny.

SJWs will not stop, ever.

Honestly, I think these people all voted for Hillary, and to them, this IS what a leader does. It's typical girl-think, dating all the way back to passing notes in school. "If it's important, it has to be a SECRET!"
