49 This work was made during the explosion of interest after the development of mathematical perspective. Mantegna, especially, became more and more daring in his compositions, exploring different perspectives and angles.

For me, because the focus is on this new element, a lot of Italian Renaissance art from this period is rather conceptually boring, but visually interesting. Mantegna represents the generation just before Michelangelo. Leonardo overlaps this era.

Always had mixed feelings about this painting. In my opinion, it's value as art or religious inspiration is wildly overshadowed by the artist using the subject as a way of showing off his mad skilz in perspective.

72 Took a nice walk with wife and dog on the beach this morning. Spent the last couple hours trying to figure out what kind of skull my nephew found out on the flats. The assumption is that it's "a seal", but there are lots of types of seals. I'd like to narrow it down, but it's missing a few parts, so the online ID guides only go so far.

Posted by: Lincolntf at June 14, 2018 09:53 AM (l14X/)

73 IIRC...

Men took Jesus' body from the cross, wrapped it, and carried it to the tomb, where it was laid on a rock niche. In haste, because of the approaching sunset and start of the Sabbath.

Women thought the men hadn't done a proper job of anointing Jesus' body, so they headed out to the tomb at first light on Sunday. When they arrived, the tomb was open and the body was gone.

So, women grieving over barenaked Jesus lying on a bed is... sorta weird, even if taken as symbolic or metaphorical or whatever. I'm pretty sure no fluffy pillow nor nice bedsheets were involved at any point.

And he's awfully clean for someone just whipped, beaten, and crowned with thorns. Even the nail holes look tidy.

Then there's the weird perspective of the whole painting, but I'm not an expert on scripture or art.

76 Traditionally, the crucifix shows Jesus on the cross having a sort of footrest, often his feet one on the other, and a single nail piercing both.
So the artist was probably working off that concept.

As young teens a lot more talk-back and fighting with the parental units, tons more food, more angst. I understand this eventually ends. 151 As someone mentioned above, Christ's torso is correct, but his legs are way too small. Even more so, notice his feet. Even artists devoted to naturalism must give way to reality. His feet are rendered small because at this angle, normal-sized feet would block the viewer's view of the body.

This work is famous for its perspective and technical skill but I have never read anything that praises it much for anything else.

208 Fen, that's the way our community college system is too, even if the kids are under 18. What you do is you sit down with your son, write down everything you need to know to get into his account (user id and password), then you can get in there to the payment part.

The CC never sends a bill, nor does it send a reminder. Instead, as soon as you register you can pay the bill, or there is a date by which you must pay or you will be unregistered. When that happens, that's pretty easy to fix - just have your son re-register and pay the bill right then. Because when that "pay by" date passes, you only have 24 hours after re-registering to pay or he will get bumped again.

Advice for you Fen: Have your son sign a Power of Attorney and a Medical POA as well. File those with the school. At that point you are back in the drivers seat and they can share all the information. I did this for my children and I think everyone should.
The Medical POA is absolutely crucial. Schools are not allowed to share any information at all with parents, and if your child has depression issues that can present serious challenges. They will not even tell you your child is in trouble unless you have this on file.

June 14: Flag Day in the United States, observed to celebrate the history and symbolism of the American flag.

and then it took an unexpected turn . . .

15th Eid al Fitr, first day or Islamic month of Shawwal, marking the end of Ramadan. Many muslims attend communal prayers listen t khutba (sermon0 and give zakat al fit Fitr (charity in the form of food) during the Eid al Fitr.

Also Native American Citizenship day, commemorating day int 1924 when the US congress passed legislation recognizing the citizenship of Native Americans.

June 16: the Martydom of Guru Arjan Dev, observed by members of the Sikh Faith. He was the fifth Sikh guru and the first Sikh martyr.

So, what do you supposed would happen if I pointed out that if they are listing religious holy days/martyrs they might have missed just a "few" catholic ones in the month of June? Not sure about any Jewish Holidays etc.

You're welcome. The only reason I know all this is that my kids started taking a class or two at the CC when they were 16 or 17, and I would go with them for the initial visits. Because they were dual-enrolled, they would go through and explain all this stuff to us (the "regular" enrollees would go through orientation, but we didn't have to do that).

For the next session, if you go on your CC website after registration starts, they will probably have a reminder to pay by a certain date or you will be dropped from the class. That way you can put it on your calendar.

I don't might the political recognitions as much as going religious, if you are going to do it, excluding the martyrs of some religions and not others is favoritism.

Are the people in HR departments really this dumb or is it deliberate? What would a real moron do?

June is generally empty of Jewish holidays this year. Although July 1 is a fast day (17 Tammuz).

248 Oh and Fen, with regard to the FERPA thing, that's just some paper that your son would need to sign over at the CC. He could ask at the information desk there and they would know where to send him for that, probably to the guidance counselor's office.

Huck does a lot more, which I never would have thought of and seems to be a good idea, but the basic FERPA thing is just so that the school can talk to you about your son with his permission, and doesn't require anything more than his signing the form at the school.

A Londonistan imam issued a fatwa against him, calling for the faithful to kill him, I believe. The prison he was sent to, in a star court trial, is something like 90% Muslim. If they don't protect him in prison, his chances of a long life are greatly reduced.

340 So, women grieving over barenaked Jesus lying on a bed is... sorta weird, even if taken as symbolic or metaphorical or whatever.

No, I believe the waiver form is available at the Registrar's office. When we had my daughter enrolled, they handed the form out to every kid while we were all gathered in an auditorium. Then they announced to the parents that the kids had these forms, what they were and why they were important. Strongly urged kids and parents to fill form out and submit it.
If you can, I'd go back to the Registrar's office with your son, reenroll him, get the waiver form signed and submitted while you are there.

Our kid also produces false negative tests-for everything. She will have all the symptoms-textbook- and keep testing negative. For Lyme, for Strep, for Mono. She requires the in depth, thousand dollar tests that you can only get at certain labs. Insurance doesn't pay of course.

So, if there is a negative, doctors say that there is another problem. We have learned that Lyme often produces negative tests, while still affecting the patient. Plus there are the myriad other tick-borne diseases that share the same symptoms as lyme, but ID doctors don't want to mess with them.

Shakespeare used "beast with two backs." People have liked using euphemisms for sex and wanting to have sex with someone for a long time.

Posted by: buzzion at June 14, 2018 11:16 AM (lKs2v)

477 Regarding "bias" "deviation" re: Comey email - assuming that's how it's spelled out.
Proving political bias is damn near impossible. There's a scale with a wide line. However, for someone like Comey -who walked around as a saint and The Last Boy Scout, saying he deviated from procedure is a much more telling of his actions (at least as how he views himself).

He can no longer go around and acting (tweeting) to some higher ground as to someone who can not be challenged and unquestioned about his actions and motives. Motive? Doesn't matter. Because of his "deviation" his motive can never be said or proven one way or the other (i.e., bias).

In short: it's like telling an umpire he did such a bad job that we don't know if he wanted one team to win or not because the rules weren't followed.

482 A few years ago I read in one of Fr. Andrew Greeley's novels about a book devoted to Jesus' genitals in art. No kidding. Apparently the artists wanted to emphasize that the Son of God was a real live human being, male variety, with a fully-equipped male anatomy. Some artists even showed the resurrected Jesus with an erection, symbolizing revivification and the triumph of the life-force over death. I found the book Fr. Greeley referred to in a library, and this Mantegna painting was one of the illustrations. Jesus doesn't look tumescent here, but he is sporting a nice package.
