Anyone remember the college student who came in a year or two ago?

Her assignment was to find a blog on the other side of her beliefs and engage in the comment section, or something.

We had no idea who she was. Thought she was just a troll, and raked her over the coals. By the time we figured out she was probably genuine (if silly and kind of hilarious, unintentionally, of course), the art thread came up and she either had had enough of us and left, or she didn't understand that conversations move to new threads.

That was my favorite.

you have to give them credit for tenacity. They will do the fingers in ears, red faced screaming for 4 or 8 years it seems. God knows what they expect us to do when a lib gets in office. I think they dream it will go back to the Obama days, they are wrong about that.

93 I've always enjoyed still life paintings from that time and area. The detail is (by my standards) astounding and the colors are rich and varied, usually against a dark background which emphasized the objects. I think there is often symbolism involved but the paintings are so attractive I never learned about it.

It would be interesting to see this in person, close up, to try to figure out how the hell the artist achieved his effects.

Yeah, I know, another dry recital of attributes but trying to understand what does or doesn't appeal to me is part of the enjoyment.

100 Thinking of beautiful and practical tableware:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Cellini_Salt_Cellar#/media/File:Saliera.png

162 These Dutch still-lifes are really second to none. Spectacular to look at and get lost in the details. It's a style trait that some scholars trace back to the Dark Ages.

These still-lifes, while intended to show off the skill of the artist, also give a nice look into the wealth of the Netherlands at this time. The fruit is a citrus fruit, something imported from the tropics and a status symbol. The ewer has a very Persian/Indian design to it. A thick, rich rug, gold trim on the bowl, and a silver platter(?).

As opposed to the fascist manly man who was able to keep his people alive.

187 Note the semiotics of opression. The aquamanile, ostensibly a container of fluid, water, womb like, is by it's form distorted into a blue veined phallic dominating structure. Here it is white, harking back, and perhaps even celebrating the genocidal greed of the patriarchal transAtlantic slave trade. Even the bowel and fruit are co-opted into a celebration of dominance and subjugation: the fruit (can we be more maternal?) is flayed and left helpless. The bowl, which should nurture, is bound in metal chains. All around is strewn, carelessly, the debris of material culture. This is what masculinity does: it swallows cultures whole and turns them, in the name of abstractions like beauty, truth and art, into rigidly domineering, restraining, choking celebrations of penetration by.....excuse me for a minute...

205 I think the point of still lifes is to show off technique, but that's just an assumption.

It's just... I can't really articulate my emotions- part confusion, part whatever. They're seemingly always fruits and vegetables, as opposed to stuff on desks or furniture or whatever. (Painting/drawing/etc. outside is a different thing, what with wind and bugs and weather and crap.)

I guess I assume part of it is "Hokay. You're indoors, in a room. Draw something. Something that won't, you know, move. Stare at it! Observe the ever-living crap out of it and reproduce it, like a photograph, since those haven't been invented yet."

267 Still Lifes were the lowest of the artistic genres, according to the French Royal Academy established in the mid-17th century. The ranking depended on the artists ability to recreate life and the spirit, and was based on the natural hierarchy: God> Saints > Man > Animals > Nature > Dead Things. The absolute top of all subject matter were scenes from the Bible or Holy Mysteries. Still-lifes contained little to no life (obviously). They were seen a cold mimicry of ordinary things, that displayed skill but nothing more.

God help you if you had a reputation as a Still-Life artist. And, in some cases, if you applied to the Academy as a still-life artist, that was your limit. It was very difficult to advance beyond that level.

President Trump treats diplomacy like a business transaction, which is how it should be handled.

Heck the nyt went so far as to publish a story (lie) saying that Trump's cabinet told him it would be impossible to have the meeting on the 12th because they didn't have time to accomplish everything after Kim cancelled it the first time. They literally tried to derail the Summit by printing lies because they knew it would make Trump look good.

They are deathly afraid of November and what it is going to bring and they will literally make $hit up to hurt Trump in an effort to stop him from making any progress.

Now I am not saying Kim will honor the deal, but this is the most progress that anyone has ever made with North Korea and Trump did it without having to fly planes loaded with $$$$ to Kim in exchange for a meeting, and that is ass burning all liberals.

Sticking with foreign policy, in the aftermath of the G-7 summit the Democrat-Left-Media complex and the Eurabians are all butthurt that PDT has insulted them and not knuckled under, like previous administrations have (for the most part) since the end of World War II. With all due respect to Europe and the Left, which is to say none at all, GFY. The President is right; we spent our blood and treasure liberating you from ideologies of your own making twice in a generation and after rebuilding your continent and economies, we've spent nearly 75 years afterwards funding your dissolute, insane, cheese-eating, wine-guzzling, adulterous lifestyles while protecting you from Russia, all to see you committing cultural suicide at our expense and then blaming us, evil Jooz, capitalism, Christianity and the 40 hour work week for the ills you brought upon yourselves, as the illusion of the European union collapses around you. Enough.

Yes, the tomato server, but the coolest was the grape shears. I found a stash of fruit knives (that I thought were mini steak knives). Mom used to keep butter spreader samples of the sets she was collecting for her granddaughters on her desk so if one of the matching services called, she had it together.

331 I think Trump is more likely to succeed, because outside of the concern troll West, the rest of the world respects strength.

Trump's idea of "winning a debate" is different from mine. I saw that long ago on the Apprentice. One player was wildly railing at another--really not making many actual *points*--and Trump took the guy's calm dismissal of his opponent as "losing".

But as Scott Adams explains in various pieces, it's actually more in sync with how the mass of humans think and how status is actually apportioned among human groups.

As I see it, a good portion of the world is not Kumbaya. And so they don't expect that a bargaining opponent has never demeaned them or denounced them. The idea that it's incongruous that the guy who demeaned Kim as "Little rocket man" should buddy up to him is yet another in a series of illustrations of the left's maladjustment to the way things really work, given their attachment and fetish for "how things should work".

The left has a real problem with how reality continually defies it. This of course is also the origin of their claim "reality has a liberal bias", because once again, they substitute wishes for analysis. And they will not confront reality before they are driven to denounce it.

Wasn't there some other stupid one that he and John Travolta did as old farts? I seem to recall it vaguely, there was a scene where one of them spills water in their lap at a restaurant and the waitress assumes he's wet himself and condescendingly tries to be discreet in her help.

It wasn't funny as intended, because the whole point was that these two fossils were trying to show the world that they were in fact still young and virile. It was funny because what I saw of the movie looked like two fossils method-acting as they tried to reprise old characters from 30 years ago.

Actually, IIRC, Clifford did *not* call Reagan an amiable dunce, he said that one could *take* him for an amiable dunce. The same press that has distorted Trump's words into smear quotes simply edited Clifford's words to remove the parts that made it less of a weapon.

In fact, again IIRC, Clifford--if that's the guy I'm thinking of--was on some show where he specifically denied that his opinion of Reagan was "amiable dunce". He said that it was his first impression.

Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at June 12, 2018 10:36 AM (UBzPO)

-------------

I'm sure there's been tons of debate on this, but I've got to say...

...Lil Kim doesn't strike me as someone who has the stomach for wide-scale genocide and the slow agonizing death of thousands, as his father and grandfather did.

Yes yes, I know. There are still hard labor camps. He's had political enemies killed. Violently. Warbier came back comatose. I don't dismiss these at all.

I do wonder how much of that was directly him vs. how much of it were the upper echelons of his own "old guard," leftovers from his dad's administration who are used to the old ways of doing things, and likely *do* have a taste for these sorts of monstrous activities.

Lil Kim grew up around this shit, and to some degree, it has been forced upon his as "normal." I think that he's either still young enough, or saw enough of the outside world, that he hasn't let the small spark of decency that normal, non-psychopath humans are born with have get snuffed out yet.

I pray that I'm right on this, and that there is still a spark of decency in him, enough that he's actively interested in turning the page and leading his country out of death-camps and hard labor and daily doses of fear.

It can't be done in a week, though. Read stories of NorK defectors, and how hard it is for them to comprehend the outside world once they escape. Read stories of old Soviet defectors in the 80's that escaped and how hard it was for them to comprehend something as simple as STOCKED GROCERY STORE SHEVLES. They thought it was a joke, it was such a foreign notion. You can't do this to an entire country that has been brainwashed on a multi-generational level. It's going to take time, or your going to break people's minds and wind up with messes and zealots and people actually wanting to go back to the old way.

When I was in high school, my maternal grandmother asked me to select a silver pattern I liked, and she would buy me pieces for Christmas and my birthday.

When I moved to ATL, I had just been in an apartment for a few days and hadn't gotten rental insurance, and someone broke in and stole every piece of my silver. I'm still furious at myself and heartsick. Anyhow, I cherish my mother's and other family pieces.

Trump already did the "insult Whoa Fat publicly to get him to the negotiating table." Next step, which he just did, was "treat him nicely once he's at the negotiating table, because now you've set up a carrot and stick / reward - punishment association in the subjects mind."

And that's how you cultivate someone who is difficult, but who you have some leverage over.

What is the point of Rubio's comment? It looks as though he's read about what Trump has done, but he doesn't understand how it works at all, so he's just copying everything Trump did 6 months ago to try to make him look like he has something to say. But he doesn't, Rubio just showed he's a complete idiot. It's the wrong message at the wrong time because Rubio has no clue as to how any of this works.
