It's Time For A National Conversation On Taking California Away From Californians

Feel like getting depressed? Here is a map of every county in California, showing how abysmally bad the education of our youth has become in what used to be the greatest state in the union. Percent of Students Meeting or Exceeding Standards on Latest Annual State Assessments (2017) has two pull-down menus in the upper right, with two categories of standards (English language arts/literacy and mathematics) and various ethnic groups.

What is really shocking is that the data are from the educational establishment, which has a vested interest in making themselves look at least minimally competent. Although...a really pessimistic and suspicious interpretation is that they are happily destroying public education in California so that they can clamor for more funding. Either way, it's awful.

The soft bigotry of low expectations indeed!

But, if you're teaching English proficiency and Math, there's no time left to teach about global warming, gender fluidity, and SJW concerns, and socialism, and what a crap country America is, and islam.

and those are the things that are really important for children to learn.

So, it's a wash.

12 OK, to be more serious, I have a great friend who just retired from 30 years of teaching in SoCal. Excellent teacher...the one al the parents wanted for their kids. But in the last several years only half the parents could speak English, and most of them were on drugs, or selling them.
The decline of education in CA is horrifying.
And its coming to all of us soon.

19 I think California is a useful experiment, showing what happens when you give the radical left too much power. This is what you get, people. Don't listen to them. Its tyranny + failure.

The problem is as others have said: they ruin a place then flee like locusts and for some asinine reason people listen to them when they go somewhere else.

Right now I am reading another crappy "thriller" book. Two nights by
someone or other. Pretty formulaic. Taking a break between buckets of
Wodehouse and tackling Tom Jones.

Take Robert Mitchum from
the Big Sleep, turn him into a kick ass bullet dodging girl , who takes
on two guys at once with debilitating dislocation moves. Get shot in the
shoulder and drinks beer and coffee a recuperation process. Half way
through we find that the bad guys are basically Chirstian "survivalists"
who accidentally bombed a Jewish elementary school while trying to bomb
a mosque or a muslim grocery store. Turns out some little Jewish kid
found the abandoned backpack bomb and decided he wanted it and without
looking into it, brought it to the school. Throw in some white supremacy
.......... still have a dumpster fire to go.

This is the seconf
piece of popular "American" fiction that basically christians, whites,
and Americans as the monster. Meanwhile Janie, McToughgirlpants, is
walking all over town as a private investigator shooting the shit out of
people in hotels, and the cops are like, "Hey, try not to do that so
publicly, next time. Paperwork you know. But yeah kill them.because we
all know they are the worst."

Now we know she was hired by some
rich Jewish lady to find the killers of backpack boy, yeah he blew
himself up with the appropriated backpack".
The way this novel reads, I can guaran-damn-tee you that ugly old Fagan like Jewish lady will be behind it all.

So
that is three for three on "modern crime thrillers" that basically
paint the average American "Moron" as evil incarnate who gets to be
hunted like dogs by Janey McToughgirl pants"

As window into the
cluttered attic of a leftist mind, its illustrative, not a bad read,
cause talks like Mitchum in Big Sleep, but coo coo for cocoa puffs on
the ideology.

And New Yorkism, New Jerseyism, and Massachusettsism are spreading all throughout the East Coast into the South.

The residents of all those states are fleeing elsewhere and many bring their voting habits with them.

I've suggested, tongue in cheek, that perhaps the master plan of the Left is to turn their states and cities into such hellholes that the residents flee to neighboring areas and turn them Left as well.

But that is exactly what is happening, and it couldn't be any more efficient if it *was* planned.

Unsurprising, though. The culture that has grown up around ethnic groups rather than being broadly American is so destructive to kids. Its weird because regional differences are disappearing as TV and movies create a sort of general USA accent and culture, but ethnic ones are becoming stronger and more divided.

There's more difference between a white kid and a black kid in one neighborhood than there is between an Oregonian and a Arkansian these days.

JACKSON, Miss. - School- and district-level passing rates for the first administration of the 3rd Grade Reading Assessment are now available to the public. The passing rate report is posted on the Mississippi Department of Education website.

Statewide, 93.2 percent of 3rd graders passed the test. The initial pass rate has increased every year since the test was first administered, rising from 85 percent in 2015, to 87 percent in 2016, to 92 percent in 2017.

More than 60 school districts had a pass rate of 95 percent or higher.

The Literacy-Based Promotion Act requires 3rd graders to pass a reading assessment to be promoted to 4th grade. Students are provided with three opportunities to pass the test.

I'm fine with Mike Hammer doing this because he's big, tough, and

boobs, and that's boring and lame. If you want to write a guy, write a guy.
I know its harder to get published unless you have a tough grrl

crying out loud, why even write a female character if she's not going to
be in any sense of the word female?

There's like 5 characters in Russian that are small variants or different lengths of the same sort of W shape. Run a few of them together and it becomes just a bunch of loops. 148 "I imagine Arabic cursive is as hard to read as Russian, so many linked similar characters."

That actually does sound similar. A whole host of Arabic letters (half or so? more?) are only differentiated from one another by the presence or absence of little dots or lines, which are often half-assed or skipped. Also, they have this bizarre habit of stacking letters vertically (in a language which is obviously meant to be written horizontally) so a little jagged lightning bolt with some squiggles around it supposedly represents, 2 to 3 similar (but phonetically different) letters.

Their "calligraphy" is a nightmare. Most Arabs can't even read it unless they're told ahead of time what it's supposed to mean.

I complain about cursive because duplicating the written form on your language is a waste of time and effort, and the lazy and sloppy writers of cursive quickly devolve into something that is difficult for anyone else to read.

I suspect if people put as much time into practicing normal letters and learning and writing cursive there would be very little difference in speed.

Sort of like the Dvorak keyboard. Sure you can type faster after switching, you've just put a few hundred hours of practice that you never wouldve done otherwise.

Yes, because even if a bit sloppy, normal print is the dominant form of writing. So even slight mistakes are easily recognizable.

Since cursive is incredibly rare now, almost no one is used to seeing even slightly deprecated forms outside of their own. So imperfect cursive quickly becomes more illegible than print.

It reminded me of my personal note taking for classes where for example, I would use "fr" to stand both for For and From since they were similar consonants but could be determined by context.
However, these systems are much better thought out.

They offered him a permanent position in CA after the assignment but turned it down because he said it wasn't where he wanted to raise his family. I guess he hated hippies.

Always wondered how I would have turned out if he had accepted.

239 I think California is a useful experiment, showing what happens when you give the radical left too much power. This is what you get, people. Don't listen to them. Its tyranny + failure.

The problem is as others have said: they ruin a place then flee like locusts and for some asinine reason people listen to them when they go somewhere else.

241 In a sane world, areas that dysfunctional would be conquered and reorganized by the conquerors. That's what's really needed in those cases: a brief period of military/colonial rule during which workable norms are reinstated. But that's an impossibility, of course. There's a point at which democracy simply doesn't function and has to be stopped, and places like Detroit are there and have been for some time. But you can't say these things out loud. We apparently have to go on fordver pretending Detroiters are fit to govern themselves.

274 California might well be in violation of the Constitutional requirement that all states provide a Republican form of government with their asinine "primary" system. While it is true, as Tom Servo reminded me, that the states have full control over their methods of filling political offices, there is still the final Constitutional requirement of this Republican form of government, which I believe California violates with its jungle primaries.

If California were to just be honest and call them "first-run general elections" then that would be fine (with the parties able to hold their own primaries before that to pick who they want to participate in the general elections representing them) but California doesn't do that and, instead, lies about these being "primaries", which they most certainly aren't, and in doing so stops parties from holding their own actual primaries.

One of the federal government's few actual jobs is to insure that states have this sort of Republican government so it is within the power of the feds to do all kinds of shit to the California political system to get it in line with the Constitution.

In Ontario the parochial RC "Separate" school system is fully funded like the secular public system and even though the RC schools only get about 50% of the funding per student as the public system, they usually do better scholastically. (Not that it's perfect either as there's plenty of p.c. and liberal junk there too.) I don't think there's much difference in teachers' pay but I don't know for sure.

One of the reasons for that is some people on welfare still have enough motivation to shop for the best benefits.

They will ask where benefits are highest and, finding out that would be California, they move there. Sometimes they move back after finding out the cost of living there is prohibitive.
The government gets what it pays for and, if that is welfare cases, it will draw them like a magnet.

364 Because of this countries historical experience with a civil war based on geography, we tend to view civil wars through that paradigm. But that was a unique set of circumstances, and therefore our expectations and beliefs on that topic are deeply flawed.

I do not believe, for many reasons, that there will be any actual "war" involving violent conflict, but IF there were, it would be much more like the English Civil War's of the 1640's, in which England split into multiple factions based on religion, class, and ideology. In town after town, the various groups would make war on each other, with the result that much of the country was burned to the ground by the time it was over.

Cromwell, who ended up in charge of it all, was an unheard of nobody when it all began, and little to do with it's start. He was just one of those people who had the ability to militarily defeat everyone who tried to go up against him, and by the end nobody was left standing but him.

That civil war has never been talked about much by anyone because it was so terrible, and because everyone on every side descended down into the depths of barbarity before it was over. Lower class mobs ransacked churches, murdered clergy, raped nuns. The nobility gathered groups of mercenaries and raced through poor villages in the night, slaughtering everyone they found. Anyone either side didn't like got burnt at the stake, just because.
There was no law, there were no courts, there was no justice, just chaos for year after year.

That's what a real civil war between the classes looks like. It was so bad that the Brits have spent the last 360 years trying to pretend it didn't happen.

Look at it logically. Let them leave. In fact, put walls around them. Once they no longer have a reliable food and water source, their population will dwindle precipitously. Then you can just walk in, offer them PBJ sandwiches for the land and, Shazam, you've returned them to the fold. Of course, don't forget to shoot the survivors before you leave.

People often make that that comment on here about the states which they don't like; It gets tiresome and of course, NJ has had Republican governors and may again if Murphy continue to be tax & spend liberal who supports sanctuary states. I also appreciate what youhave said about quaint little little historic towns and rural places in NJ. The taxes and traffic are terrible, but people who have only travelled into Newark airport and flown out of there don't really know about the state. It would be like me saying all of Michigan looks like the bad parts of Detroit.

Our founding fathers were still affected by the aftermath of the English Civil War. It was part of the culture of their parents and grandparents. One reason the Constitution came out the way it did.

The British Army is still the British Army because of the beheading of Charles the 1st and the English Civil War. That monarchy can call a regiment or branch of service Royal, like Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, or Queen's Royal Hussars, but not the Army.

A great memory, the Windsors.

During the period where the Wisconsin Democrats fled the state legislature, the Wisconsin teachers union proudly pointed out that Wisconsin's student test scores were better than the student test scores in backward, troglodyte Texas.

It was pointed out that the test scores for white students in Texas were better than for white students in Wisconsin, the test scores for Hispanic students in Texas were better than for Hispanic students in Wisconsin, and the test scores for black students in Texas were better than for black students in Wisconsin.

It's just that Wisconsin had mostly white students, and Texas had mostly minority students - adjust for that, and Texas did considerably better.

Pretty good. We're going to be moving soon, my parents are coming to TX and leasing our house while I buy sister's house and she and her husband and 5 new kids 20-2 years old get a *new* house in the same neighborhood. It's exactly what we wanted but I'm not online nearly as much since I have actual meatspace stuff to take care of.

Any body want to tell me who I ought to vote for. Henruh McMastuh sort of chaps my behind. Some (dirty) old man at the barber shop said he was gonna vote for Catherine Templeton, 'cause "she's purty". Should I follow suit?

It's likely going to be run-off between her and Foghorn Henruh.

479 Margarita, try reading Orwell's Homage to Catalonia, it has information that is glossed over in other sources.

The Communists were in a vicious fight with the Anarchists, and the Anarchists thought it was important to first defeat the Nationalists first.
While the Anarchist militias were guarding the frontiers the Communists first arrested all the Anarchists they could find, then called back the militia officers and imprisoned them, and then broke up the militias and started arresting the individual militiamen if they decided to.

Later, and this is not covered by Orwell but third hand oral history, the Nationalists took each town, recognized that the majority of the prisoners in the big prisons were Anarchists, and shot them out of hand.

484 In the old days, writing right-handed kept your hand out of the wet ink.

The original writing was actually made for left-handers (right to left). This is because these writing systems came from etching, first, which is done from right-to-left naturally for right-handers (holding the chisel in the left hand and hammering with the right moves naturally from right to left). But when they advanced to writing from etching they brought over the direction (right-to-left) which for writing is more natural for a left hander. So some of the oldest written languages got stuck with a left-handed writing direction.

No. There was Scott McKenzie and his poxy song, news coverage of the "Summer of Love," and any number of movies glorifying the California lifestyle.

Economic opportunities and the lifestyle attracted the best from the country and the world.

The hippie crap attracted the worst, the crazies (hello, zombie Charles Manso (OH)n and Jim Jones (IN)), the druggies, the fruits (e.g. Harvey Milk, from NYC), and the hard-left types from all over the country.

Posted by: Grump928(C) at June 10, 2018 05:40 PM (yQpMk)

Greeks going both ways is a bit of an improvement over their natural tendencies.

As to writing, the Greek alphabet came much later. They took it from Hebrew (and they screwed it up, too, thinking that some guttural consonants were vowels, so the Greeks put actual vowels into their letters, which was something totally new and a huge improvement!).

I think California is a useful experiment, showing what happens when you
give the radical left too much power. This is what you get, people.
Don't listen to them. Its tyranny + failure.

Actually, the results in California are the result of allowing the voting rolls to be hopelessly corrupted by introducing the Motor Voter Act and not checking their nationality before they vote.

Yes, the cause IS this simple. Most of the disasters are because of non-citizens voting. One side approves and embraces illegal voting, the other side is too nice to make an issue of it. Because those that are stealing and their supporters will call them racist, or something.

The same thing is starting in Seattle en masse, and got it's start also because of Motor Voting supporting Leftists.

499 >> (Cuba, BTW, was never a US colony.)

Respectfully I differ. Cuba was ceded to the US by Spain per the Treaty of Paris in 1898, and declared independence FROM the US in 1902, but "Under Cuba's new constitution, the U.S. retained the right to intervene in Cuban affairs and to supervise its finances and foreign relations" (Wikipedia) and when its postal system was established, at first it used US stamps and stamped envelopes surcharged with values in centavos. I'll accept the contention "Cuba wasn't a US colony FOR VERY LONG," but honestly, sounds pretty colonial to me.
