My first riffle? A used Sears & Roebuck .30-30 lever action rifle for my 16th birthday present. My deer hunting rifle until I reached "29". Training with the lever action rifle.

Some readers will remember seeing first-run episodes of such westerns on television as The Rifleman and Gunsmoke. A common firearm seen in most of them is the lever action gun. And back in the days depicted in these television shows and in western movies, the lever action was used for hunting, shooting fun, contests, and self-defense. It was versatile and effective, and it still is.
Like the modern rifles of today – the AR-15 being the most common example – the lever gun was chambered for a variety of cartridges. And even though technology has advanced and semi-automatic rifles and carbines are common, the lever gun is still a viable platform. And it is great fun to shoot.

A previously unreported Office of Inspector General investigation found that in February 2016 the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services stopped using a FBI crime database called the National Instant Criminal Background Check System that ensures applicants who want to carry a gun do not have a disqualifying history in other states.

Recently in the Weekend Gun Thread I had asked, "How did you get into shooting?" Here is a response from "Born Free".

I usually haunt the pet thread, but still haven't been able to bring myself to tell you about my angels who now live in Heaven. However for the gun thread you ask for stories, and mine follows.
My dad taught my younger brother and me to shoot a single shot bolt action .22 rifle when I was still 7. He taught us both at the same time, so my brother was 6. We lived on a farm while he installed ICBMs in Nebraska cornfields, but he was brought up in New Mexico, had been an Army sergeant, and was at that time hunting pheasant with our chocolate lab retriever. I once saw him use his Colt Woodsman pistol to put a single .22 round through the ear of a skunk at about fifty feet. Even after bathing, the dog wasn't allowed in the house for a day or two after that, which pained the whole family.
By age 14 or so we'd moved to Florida, and my dad was working on the Saturn V program at Cape Kennedy. My brother and I joined the Brevard County Sheriff's Junior Rifle Club, which no longer exists. Our club fielded competition shooting team and individual entrants across Florida, and placed in NRA national junior postal matches. We rocked.
But it all started with several weekends of nothing but safety training and quizzes. An adult NRA volunteer and club patriarch personally delivered our instruction. He worked for NASA at the Cape, and he was no-nonsense on the subject of safety in handling and firing our rifles. Every kid in the club carried that to heart in their behavior on the range. I saw wild birds land on target frames and on the sand burm behind them, and nary a poof of sand or bullet come near them for as long as they hopped around. We never fired at anything but the target, ever, and held fire in those cases without being told. Older shooters always set the example for younger, newer kids, so adults never had to intervene.
Later in college, I joined the university team and competed in the mid-Atlantic region, from NJ to Pennsylvania and Virginia. Our armory was equipped with military bolt action Remington open sight target .22s, among the best of their kind ever made. Our coach was the Special Forces noncom from our ROTC department. The universities gun range was the basement of the oldest building on campus, one that had hosted an address by President George Washington. I weep to think how those marksmanship programs have been gutted since then, but have hope in spite of it. There are some brilliant, responsible, mature young people standing up for their rights.

An interesting story. Sad that marksmanship programs have been discarded.

Lots of CMP talk the last couple weeks in the thread which has been fun to read. Seems the prices are high and selection is less and less favorable for the money. I wanted to show you what an early 90's 'rack gun' looked like.
This Garand truly was a Rack Gun. Old wood. Springfield Armory manufactured in November, 1943. The bolt, trigger group and Op-rod are correct dash number to date of MFR. The only change to the rifle i see is a 1951 H&R barrel. This was i believe the 600 dollar rack model when i ordered it.
Can't find those anymore. Talk about lucky. Still holding out some hope on the remaining ones left for folks to buy. A dream to shoot and amazingly accurate. Thanks again for a great thread..

I don't gun thread much, but I have my father's Winchester 94 in .30/30.

The serial number says it's from 1949, he would have been eighteen. Mom speculated that it was a HS graduation gift from an uncle who had a little money.

I love that it was designed 120 years ago, built 70 years ago, and still works just like the first one and the last one ever built.

16 I grew up in a house with a dad who had his own collection of all types of firearms. He took me small game hunting when I was 8, only cause my bro was too little. I guess he couldn't wait to have one of his kids tromp through the woods with him and the beagle.

Anyway it wasn't until decades later that I actually fired a gun. My bf got a .22 rifle and he set up a target in his back yard.
I really enjoyed it, it's a test of skill. I didn't like shooting the handgun at the range though. It was so loud and I felt the noise in my throat. If I were ever to make this a hobby I'd prefer the long boomsticks .

20 I like the idea of a lever gun and a single-action revolver in a common chambering (.357 mag, .44 mag) for a brush gun combo. I don't have any use for it, but the practicality is appealing.

22 Just received my Winchester 94 Trapper in 30/30. A seventies vintage in mint condition. It spent five months at the custom stock makers because Fedex broke the original stock in shipping. So it cost Fedex an expensive custom stock.

No more than any other shooting. It's not like it's laser printer toner or anything. I clean my flintlock rifle with hot water and dish detergent.

Some guns also take pelletized charges so you don't even have to measure out the powder.

47 I've got Dad's '94 30-30 on which he hacksawed off the saddle ring 'cause those telltale clicks spooked the game. The case adjacent was unscarred and I had a guy pull the stub stud and replace the ring.

It's got that flip-up sight so you can elevate the secondary rear notch and try your luck at something long-range, but your eyes are gonna have to be far better than mine.

Beautiful M1 (but then they all are). Are you sure about the "early 90s" part? First, that would have been the DCM days, pre-CMP and I don't think they were separated by grade. Second, I got my "one per lifetime" DCM rifle in '92-'93-ish and IIRC, it was $165. In '95 I was lucky enough to be drawn in one of the first rounds of the DCM M1-D lottery and it was $650.

Frustrating, cuz gusty. I'd get two rounds 1/4 " apart and then wind would take a flyer to 3/4".
Now, in the good old days, a guy would be happy at having everything under 1 moa. But, nooooh. Now they have to touch.

Some people really like how you have to take your time with it. The recoil also more of a shove than a kick and the sound of the shot isn't percussive at all (i.e. none of the 'feel it in your throat' concussion).

57 I shot many northern WI deer with a Winchester 94 30/30 passed down from my grandfather. An excellent 'brush gun'.
But now that I'm 29 the eyes aren't what they used to be so the iron sights don't quite cut it, and I prefer not to put a scope on it, so I carry a bolt action 3006 now.

I never had the opportunity to fire one of those. Just looking at the specs of the S&W 500 Magnum vs. .50 AE cartridges, I'd surmise that it wouldn't be nearly as bad. But, it would still be stupidly expensive to shoot so I doubt I'd ever buy one.

I have a Howa action with a 26" heave barrel chambered for .243 Winchester. 1 in 10 twist.

i found a factory load that will give me, an inexperienced marksman, a 5 shot group under the size of a 50 cent piece @ 200 yards. (I have the rifle zeroed at 200 yards)

This is factory load, 70 grain bullet, 3400 fps. Corbon manufactures the load.

My question is: with a 1 in 10 twist, is there an accuracy sweet spot for a wide range of bullet weights and loads?

Or, have you found that once "the load" is found for a rifle, one is pretty much just fine tuning "the load?"

Part of the fun is passing along the sickness to others!
Well, it could be a few things... a goofy bullet out of spec,, variable neck tension affecting pressure & velocity, variable powder charge (same), or wind. Or you did something. Or it could be something else entirely. Sometimes the range is angry.

Annnnnyhooo- that's why I try to do all my testing at the crack of dawn while the air is calm, and also plan on two sets for each combination of charge weight and seating depth to rule out fliers.

But the great take away is how the groups are tightening up!! Congratulations!

66 I remember one of the finest guns have held was one my grandfather owned, he let me hold it when I was about 13 (didn't let me shoot it, though) It was Winchester lever action carbine with a nickel plated octagon barrel, pretty sure it was an 1892 32-20. What I remember the most was how heavy a gun that was, in spite of having a relatively short barrel! BUT that octagon barrel was thick, thick.

69 Gramps had a model 1886 Winchester in 33 WCF, and as that model got chambered for the 33 in 1902, his was probably bought new in about 1913.

My cousin has it, along with the octagon-barreled Winchester pump .22 in 22LR only. My second gun is a later-issue Winchester pump that shoots 22 short, long, and LR in whatever sequence you drop them in the tube.

70 Callisto, I ~~have~~ had a Ruger .22/45 Mark IV on which I did a trigger job and added glo-sights. Sweet trigger at about 2 #; you'd barely breathe to squeeze it off.
Mrs. Red decided that she wanted to try it. And that was the last I saw of it. I tried to bribe her with a Ruger SR 22 for Valentines Day; she kept that, too.

Is .30-06 or 7.92x57 even considered 'high-powered', or standard full-power? If it starts around the .300 Win Mag or so, then I haven't fired one either.

I know that there's been a few different states where the rural counties have looked at the gun control laws being passed by the state legislatures, and basically said, "That's nice. We're not enforcing it." It seems to be catching.

Heck, depending on the law, you'd likely see that sort of thing here in California. I could easily see the current Sheriff of Orange County telling Sacramento she wasn't going to do their dirty work if the right sort of intrusive anti-gun bill got passed.

This. Probably the biggest single thing you can do improve consistency (as RI Red is finding) is to tune the load to your gun through bullet seating depth adjustments. I'd only recommend this for the experienced reloader and caution anyone reading to make very small adjustments on the order of .001" - .003" at a time.
Frankly, unless you're on a mission to find the absolute limit of precision, I'd be happy with a 1 MOA group with commercial ammo.

81 OK, slow gun thread, so I'll let myself talk a little.

I am amazed at how well a 100 year old gun shoots. On the other hand, it only shoots so well a handfull of times.

With iron sights on a .30/30 I can hit a target pretty well at 100 yards and sort of hit it at 200.

Until the barrel gets hot. Five or six shots in if they're rapid enough and your guess is as good as mine as to what it's going to hit.

In general, almost any modern, metallic-cased, smokeless, centerfire rifle cartridge would be considered "high powered." Go to an NRA or CMP High Power match and ARs will be pretty much all you see.

It's only a little bulkier than a Walther PPK, so no, it's not very big. 9x18 isn't the most common compared to .380 or 9x19, but thousands of Maks were imported during the Happy Time, so you can definitely find practice ball ammo and carry ammo without much difficulty. As to why carry one... probably just because it works. They're effective, reliable, cheap, parts are easy to find, and they're stronk like bool. Some people just like the Eastern Bloc cachet too.

I'd pick something a little smaller in .380 or a little bigger in 9, and I'd rather have a striker than a hammer, but there's nothing wrong with a Mak at all.

One would help the other, but I'm not good at holding steady so even with good modern optics my range is pretty limited, and I don't like loud noise, so even with decent ear protection. 93 Lever actions are just plain fun. While I have them in 30-30, my favorites are in pistol calibers: 22lr, 357 mag, and 45 Colt. As much as I like the solid feel of Marlins I prefer the lighter action of Winchesters. YMMV. And since I don't have scopes on mine, the Winchester top ejection isn't a problem.

If you want to get into them at the lowest price, check out the Henry 001 model in 22lr. This is their base model but its action is smooth as butter and it is damn accurate. The Henry may not last for generations like the Marlin 39 (although it might) but it does the job.

103 On the fun side, I got up at the crack of noon yesterday and did a handgun review. Shot .38 cal semi wad cutters through an old colt cobra and a Taurus model 10 rip-off, then 9 mm through a beretta 92 fs and a s&w m&pc, then .357 Sig through a g22.

For a given caliber there are general areas you start looking for accuracy nodes, but you still have to tune the load to each barrel. I have my match barrels cut from the same bar of steel and chambered with my own reamer and they are all slightly different in what combination of velocity and jump they like.

I put out the have a heart trap with an old banana. Next morning, trap is gone! WTF!
Mrs. Red found it down the hill, sans banana and badger. I think the lid hit it in the ass and it rolled backwards or scrabbled with its feet.

128 For those lusting for a Garand, CMP has Service Grade ones for $750. It's luck of the draw but the one I got last year or so had new stock a new barrel and a receiver from the 1950s. Essentially, it was a new rifle. If you can get to one of their stores and pick through them, that improves your odds of getting a really good one.

Purely anecdotal, but none of the C&R holders I know personally have ever heard word one about an inspection. Ones that I have heard of third-hand have been to go over the bound book and that's it.

144 Have two CMP HRAs, beautiful GI wood with DAS stamps that are consistent with the production dates for the receivers (and one with an LMR barrel). Metal in good shape. Shoot well.

Was thinking I'd get a Service Grade Special some day. Just to lessen the shooting mileage on my HRAs.

Be advised that ammo for the Garand ain't cheap any more (true surplus mostly gone, and what's left is about the same as commercial), so reloading + Garand is the happiest combo. And from my experience so far, one becomes a "brass artist" of sorts along the way.

M1s are very hard on brass, and I spend 1/3 of my total 30-06 reloading time filing down dents and bends affecting the extraction groove, so the case will fit in the case-holder.

Well they look exactly the same except the .308 ("tanker") is about five or six inches shorter. The forward hand guard is shortened. There is also a block in the action to prevent loading clips with .30-06 cartridges which would ruin everyone's day.
The .308 has significantly reduced recoil than the .30-06 and is a pleasure to shoot. Performance wise - ???. I've only had them out plinking with commercial or surplus ammo. But they're a hoot!

Grump, The falling block uses a lever to open the breech for loading but isn't considered a lever action. They were a simple (especially the Rolling Block) and strong mechanism for loading a single shot.

It kind of depends which dimension is the critical one for trying to conceal. Is the 26 double-stack? It kind of looks like a brick, but I've never handled one personally.

Unless you're wearing hams on your wrists, you could probably do just fine with a single-stack 9 or .380, and there are way too many to mention all the viable ones. Just off the top of my head, people seem pretty satisfied with the Ruger LCP, Smith & Wesson M&P, Taurus TCP, Kahr PM9, Kel-tec P3AT and PF9, the Makarov you mentioned as well as similar types like the Walther PPK or the Sig P232...

Broadly speaking, the answer is usually "go to the gun shop and see which one fits you best for that application". There are so many inexpensive, reliable, concealable single-stacks that there's no right answer.

Navy Arms (Arlington, Va of all places) did the modifications to a boatload of Garands coming back from overseas in the 70's I think. Mine looks pretty much new. You can look up Navy Arms and read the story. The modifications to the rifle were well done, and it looks stock in every respect other than being shorter and chambered in .308. Navy Arms has long since gone out of business-not sure if the "tanker" was ever a commercial success - but you see them for sale from time to time.

I think the Navy tried it on a very limited basis. I do not think they were ever issued to tank crews - that was all marketing.

About 5 years ago, my son and I spent a week in Alaska on the Kenai peninsula. Fantastic week, everyone who loves the outdoors and Mother Nature has to put this on their bucket list.

Most days were spent fishing, but one day we spent the afternoon riding ATV's on back trails with a guide who does this for a living, in an area about a half hour south of Anchorage. When we showed up at the trail head to get our ATV, I noticed he had a revolver on his belt. It was a Ruger Blackhawk in .41 caliber.
I asked him about it. He said "strictly for protecting against Grizzlies, we have maybe a 50/50 chance of coming across one today. Yes, it is a .41, not a .44 Mag, but I also load my own". IIRC, some very heavy soft point rounds.

I asked him, "is that enough of a load?"
"It was the last time."

I immediately felt safer. Saw a lot of bear skat, but no bear that day.

thanks much Hog. I have the Glock 23 40 cal. compact. I keep in the kitchn drawer and got the Glock 26 sub after I borrowed and shot it. But yes, its still beefy wide. You are right. Single stack, thin would be nice. I'll check the list out. that will be fun. I really like ruger. grew up with the 22 carbine. Its a hoot and Heidi carries the Ruger 38 light revolver, So I'll try ruger first. Great suggestions.

172 Clutch, TravelingMan and BenHad. I do live in Colorado where there are elk, They gouge out of state folks but I think all the states do this. Dad liked to hunt a state wildlife area that didn't allow motorized vehicles, we were always popular with folks that got elk and had thought they would pack them out as a group or making multiple trips but found that difficult in the rough terrain there. National Forests allow ATVs or jeeps where you can get them so most hunters in those areas don't need a pack horse.

I have thought of going up there and just posting contact info but officially you can't trade or sell game meat. So could only post offering to pack for dollars. If a hunter gives you a quarter of meat they have to include a note saying they are donating/giving it to you

Savage makes a dandy 22 magnum bolt gun, though the magazines can leave a bit to be desired. Gun is easy to shoot, isn't all that loud and is extremely accurate out to 100 yards.

17 HMR is supposedly really accurate and easy to shoot, but I've not shot that particular round so cannot give personal testimony.

Someone around here must have at least fired an LCP and might be able to offer opinions. All I know is that there was a recall (easy enough to find out if a candidate gun was affected by it) and that there's an LCP II that features a slide lock (the original doesn't lock back).

You can also probably get one with a holster out the door for less than $400 too, I think the Dunham's around here always has sales on them. If you're a Ruger fan, the LCP is probably a good place to start.

You're right. I didn't look closely but the ones without magazine tubes look like single shots, falling block not rolling block. Rolling blocks didn't use a lever to open the breech.

188 I used to have my mom's M-1 carbine. She'd had the stock cut down for her. Got stolen two weeks after we moved to NE Portland. They were watching the house as it was the first time I'd left since we moved in. They missed the .357 revolver on the floor as there was a newspaper over it. We reported the theft but never heard anything about it. There was a report later that some of the Portland police had been caught keeping stolen property. I always suspected one of them wound up with it.

A family friend once brought a .45-70 BFR to the range when I was maybe 16. I don't remember much about it except that it was fun, so it must have been pretty sedate because I'm an enormous mincing pansy about report and recoil.

It's probably the low velocity and pressure from being a black powder cartridge and the fact that the thing weighed about eighteen pounds unloaded.

195 When we went hog hunting I practiced with a nice Remington 6mm that my mom had used for deer. It was a LOT nicer to shoot than the heavier elk calibers. But I have a hard time holding the crosshairs nice and steady, aside from any recoil flinching. Luckily I don't have to shoot well to eat well. Riding horses has always been more appealing so I never practiced with a 22 when young, nor will I do much now. I have a shotgun for self defense - so I don't have to be Annie Oakley to take down a home invader.

196 LCP is daily carry cuz it fits everywhere. Wallet holster doesn't print and works well in cargo pants or any back pocket.
380 is a bit undersize, but better than leaving a machine gun at home. Shoots fine but does smack your hand.

Would think cost/logistics efficiency of staying with 30-06 would easily outweigh any advantages (sort of why the M1 is 30-06, vs. .276 Pedersen, to begin with).

By the time they were rechambered, nothing else was using .30-06 and switching the rifles over to 7.62x54 was the logistically simpler decision because it put them in parity with the M-14 and M60.

Unless you weren't asking and were just remarking and already knew that, in which case: yes.

I had an LCP. This is the only gun I have ever bought without shooting one first. Big mistake. Since is so light with the poly frame, all recoil went the hand and lower arm. I sold it and bought a Bersa Thunder 380. Bigger and heavier as it is all metal gun, but much more enjoyable to shoot while still being easy to conceal.

212 Another advantage of lever actions and single action revolvers, especially Ruger Blackhawks, is you can load them to any bullet weight/powder charge that's safe. Both types of guns are a reloaders dream. You can say the same for Contender single shots but while they are strong enough, they are a bit unwieldy for carrying and are VERY uncomfortable with heavy recoil.

Any reloeaders remember when loading manuals had separate sections for Blackhawk and Contender only?

214 Welp, got my CZ 97 back from CZ.
The loaded chamber indicator had flown off. They replaced it. The gun doesn't need it, it's a design flaw and a point of failure for the gun but....it's on the California registry with the LCI so...it stays.

Anyway.

Gun shot very well. First 10 rounds at 7 yards made one hole. Very nice for .45 ACP. The gun is as accurate as I can focus. It feels...thinner than it is. Fits the hand well, as with most CZs after 75.

200 rounds, no problems, single hand firing wasn't bad either. Gun is fine, Mark needs more practice.

OK, well, that's 2 for 2 saying that the LCP can be snappy to the point of being unpleasant, so Cannibal Bob, if you're sensitive to that, maybe consider something else.

FWIW my only .380 is a Taurus TCP with a Crimson Trace LG-407 on it and I have no issues with it in any respect. I was hesitant, but I read a lot of reviews and it seems like manufacturing them in Florida instead of Brazil really boosted the reliability (I've never had it fail in any way).

Before the accident, I had a 1941 Springfield M1. Word got around at work and one of the tiniest gals in the building asked if Id take it (and her to the range). Novice shooter but her Dad was talking them up to her.

Shows up with an couple of bandoleers full of .30-06 M2 150gr FMJ ball ammo. We shot the hell outta the place. I swear she had the big O whenever the clip *pinged* of out the receiver.

Calls every so often to go again. Got to love someone that brings their own ammo every time.

225 JTB, I think reloading manuals still have "Ruger-only" loads in them (if not separate sections).

Mark, I'd love a 97. Only CZ so far is an 83, which is very nice. Plan to get a 75. If circumstances change and I'm more in buying mode, I'll keep my eyes open for a 97. Since they're on the CA roster (CZ is great about keeping their out of production models on the roster), would be easier to get than some.

On the LCP, can't say, but once fired an LCR (38, using 38 commercial reloads from the range). Yikes. "To have, not shoot" describes it well. Like getting your hand slapped by a night-stick.

I think you'll be very happy with any CZ you buy. This is my third (I have a 82 in 9 Mak as well) and I'm kinda kicking myself for not getting into them earlier.

They're right up there with Glocks and Springfield for accuracy for me. And they're way more comfortable to shoot.

242 Shot my M1 yesterday and stripped and cleaned it today. Now I have to go online and find the reassembly instructions. This happens every time I take it apart, I seem to have a mental block on reassembling the bullet guide and follower assembly. I have the instructions from the CMP, but it just says "Reassembly in the reverse order of disassembly". Yeah, thanks, that helps. Not.

I probably need to take a couple of hours and repeatedly dis and re assemble it until I can do it blindfolded. Maybe I can find a guy to wear a smokey the bear hat and scream at me while I do it. That should help, right?

It's not large. It had a double stack mag, so it's not svelte but it's no longer than a Walther PP. It is all steel, so it's not light.

But it's smaller than my XD 9 or PPQ by a long shot.

248 Grump I don't know, don't carry, but I'd think an 83 would be as concealable as many other platforms that people do carry today.

Most ergonomically natural and easy gun I've ever held. Can shoot it one-handed almost as well as with two-hand grip. Got a nice cheap surplus one through AIM, was shocked to stumble on a factory-new one in a fun store shortly after (I think part of a special last run done for an American distributor, and surely one of the last in the retail channel), bought it and put it away.

251 More so than a lever gun, I have been jonesing for a Remington Rolling Block style action. Tippmann Armory is doing stripped actions for 400 bucks, rated to 60,000 PSI of chamber pressure. Can't quite handle .300 WinMag, but could probably do .300 HH or I could be a fucking hipster about it and go for 6.5mm Creedmoor. Action, barrel, iron sights, wood. Done.

Today was range day, all 3 of my favorite black powder revolvers had some exercise.
The Remington, the Army Colt, and what has become my new favorite, the Rogers and Spencer.
To many, these are considered toys--not even hardly. They will kill just as surely as a Glock or my beloved 1911.
Using them is like holding a piece of our history, which for me is the allure.

That's actually... I wouldn't say it was difficult, but I do have to remind myself once in a while that the flintlock rifle will kill anything on the continent within about 100 yards. It has a very nonthreatening feel and it's easy to lose 'respect' for it compared to a smokeless cartridge weapon.

My CZ 82 is....7 inches long, with beavertail.

Spencer rifles had a tube magazine that extended into the buttstock. I'm fairly certain they were loaded by pulling the tube from the buttplate, but they might have had a provision for a receiver top-off too, not sure about that.

I mentioned last week that Cabelas is having a sale on all their Pietta cap and ball guns. I picked up a steel frame Remington 1858 with 5.5 inch barrel and a Colt 1851 brass frame with the 4 7/8 inch barrel. Both in 44 caliber. Very different balance from the longer barrel versions.

So much history, so much fun with these and so cheap to shoot. I even like cleaning them. (Yeah, I know I'm strange.)

285 Col Kurtz, I thought the South Koh-rean M1s were *not* MAP, thus would re-enter only as commercial imports. Of course, that would still increase supply. But all scuttlebutt about their condition, and that of their carbines, has been negative.

The former director of CMP, Orest Michaels, did say not long before he retired that he finally "saw the end in sight" for significant numbers of returned M1s CMP would be selling. Dunno if he included the Philippines rifles in that statement.

In any case, my advice stands for general reasons - if you can afford it and want one, prices and selection will only get worse over time, not better.

Cycling the lever also doesn't cock the hammer, that's an extra step. You have to cycle the lever to chamber a cartridge, then cock the hammer like the Springfield. It was a crazy transitional anything-goes period, man! I'm sure we all designed some guns in the mid-late 19th century that we'd rather forget about, amirite, guys?

310 My wife, (not really a gun person) is OK with readily available loaded ar's/12ga and a 40cal/9mm in the house at all times. Concealed carry as well. I married well. The only gun she enjoys shooting is the AR. She is recoil sensitive for sure.

316 Grump - I checked Shuffs' website. It comes with a Shuster adjustable gas plug, so you can run modern .30-06 (hotter than M2 ball) without gooning up your op rod. I should get one of those for my Garand.

322 My first rifle was a Stephens Little Scout .22. Still have it. Next was an Enfield .303 bought for about $8. Still have it. Next was an M-1 Garand. The Army wouldn't let me take it home. Same with the M-14. The M-1 was the best of the lot.

323 OMG I just checked in and noticed that I was the No. 5 AOS Commenter this past week!!! I have always felt kind of sorry for those who end up on that list, thinking "gee, those people should get a life or something." And now, oh the shame! Can I ever live it down?
Well, I surely will not be on the list next week for tomorrow I am going into the back country of the Colorado Rockies for most of the week and will probably not even be able to keep up with the news, much less blather on and on on the ONT and other venues.
All that said, thanks to the Horde for tolerating me. And, I promise I will try to get a life. Really.

326 MiL update for those praying and continuing to pray. Admitted to local metro hospital after CT scan revealed bleeding or other anomaly on the brain.

She's in for MRI now. Doctors giving range of initial diagnoses from metastatized cancer to aneurysm. Your continued prayers and well-wishes are appreciated.

Backstory is that she thought she had stomach flu, was dehydrated, and was found passed out and incoherent, shaking. In retrospect, after weeks of remarking about memory issues, this latest turn makes sense to be some brain anomaly, with an aneurysm giving similar stomach problems to stomach flu such as nausea and vomiting.
