David Harsanyi: Trump Hasn't Been Especially Bad for the Rule of Law

The wordsmith class of the right can't tell the difference between blustery words and actual actions.

Trump has the propensity to sound like a bully and an authoritarian, I'm with you. If you're arguing that Trump's rhetoric is sometimes coarse and un-presidential, I can't disagree. I'm often turned off by the aesthetic and tonal quality of his presidency. And yes, Trump has an unhealthy tendency to push theories that exaggerate and embellish small truths to galvanize his fans for political gain. Those are all legitimate political concerns.

Yet the ubiquitous claim that Trump acts in a way that uniquely undermines "the rule of law" is, to this point, simply untrue.

At National Review, Victor Davis Hanson has it right when he argues that "elites" often seem more concerned about the "mellifluous" tone of leaders rather than their abuse of power. "Obama defies the Constitution but sounds 'presidential,'" he writes, "Trump follows it but sounds like a loudmouth from Queens."

But while Obama’s agreeable tone had plenty to do with his lack of media scrutiny, many largely justified, and even cheered, his abuses because they furthered progressive causes. But not only did liberals often ignore "the rule of law" when it was ideologically convenient, they now want the president to play by a set of rules that doesn't even exist.

As I've been saying for three or four years: This is almost all about class faction, and the fact is, urban conservatives are in the same class as urban liberals, and class is thicker than water. Or ideology.

I haven't finished that piece I mentioned earlier, but Harsanyi is writing along the same lines as I am.

44 The Saga:

The passengers and crew of the Sea Cuck run around screaming as the maelstrom Stormy Daniels seizes their craft. "I have a place where I can put you!" the creature bellows.
Fearing for their lives they abandon ship as the Sea Cuck is taken under the waves and now bob about on the life rafts.

-----------

"We're lost at sea! We're gonna die! We'll starve to death!" Jonah cries.
"Knock it off, pudgy, we have rations," Cap'n Bill says.
George looks at a package and reads the label. "Genuine American Bully-Beef - Remember the Maine! To Hell with Spain!" He chucks the package over the side and is smacked in the face as it is flung back into the raft. "Bill, this is Spanish-American War surplus!"
"I got a great deal on it."
"Not even the sharks want it!"
"I'll try," Jonah says and sits quietly, trying to nibble off a piece of the beef before giving up.
"Don't worry, we won't starve," Hillary says, looking at Egg McMuffin.
"Wh-why are you looking at me..."
Huma pinches him. "Feels a little fatty."
"You can't eat me! That's murder!"
"You're the one named after a breakfast sandwich," Clapper states.
"Maybe if we get to shore?" Egg suggests and starts paddling.
"Don't wear yourself out and get all stringy," Huma adds before licking him. "Mmmmm. Soon."

Egg ceases paddling when the raft is 150 feet up the beach and then gets out and runs.
"Alrighty, we're here. That is Mar-A-Lago estate, the lair of the Golden Scalp Weasel."
A spotlight turns on.
"What's that?" Jonah asks.
"A spotlight?"
Flashing blue lights appear in the distance.
"What's that?"
"The police."
Bullets plow up the sand.
"What was that!?!"
"Young Master Trump is telling you to back off," a secret service agent says, "and next time he's not asking."

To be continued.......

Further proof (as if we needed any) that those "progressive causes" are diametrically opposed to our form of government and way of life. See Obama and Holder's deadly Promise Program as proof. That led directly to the Parkland massacre by allowing juvenile delinquents to go unpunished because of the "progressive cause" of "disparate impact" of the law on minorities, which is fantasy at best.

Minorities commit a disproportionate amount of crime, which is their tough shit. Wanna stay out of jail? Then stop breaking the law.

Eh. Trump often IS rude and bombastic.

The problem we have is that political discourse has become so constrained by taboos and ridiculously strict notions of decorum that actual communication is impossible. (It goes without saying that these stifling rules are mainly imposed on opponents of the Left.)

You can't say much of anything when you're walking on eggshells and it takes a bull-in-the-china-shop to pierce the mystique.

Someone once said that our virtues and vices are always two sides of the same coin. So it is with Trump. Rudeness and bombast, yes --- but along with them honesty and COURAGE.

If we want to talk about being unpresidential, and bullying, then you have to start with Obama: he was fond of not just attacking his political foes, but segments of the American public. He made clear he was *not* president of all of us, just those who voted for him; the rest of us were racists. He bullied Wall Street, bankers, jet owners, gun owners, teabaggers, people who were opposed to open borders and refugees, and on and on.

And then there was the constant scolding. Will never forget how often, after a domestic terror attack, he would straight-up scold us for being racists.

173 I love when they pick apart the "package" that is Trump.
Trump is an enigma. You can't simply pick and choose the parts you like or don't like because it's the complete combination that makes it work.
I explained it to someone this morning like this. People like Obama are about "opportunities". People like Trump are about "possibilities".
Those are two completely different ways of thinking.
Obama was opportunistic in the way he handled things. He let the status quo be so he could predict openings and exploit them when they occurred.
Trump imagines what's possible. There are many more dynamics to that thinking. It's not just the status quo, it's what you can dream, imagine or believe may be done, no matter how remote.
That's how great entrepreneurs think. That's largely how Trump thinks. He's not about the convention, he's about the potential innovation.
That's why a lot of people freak out over Trump. They like comfortable and predictable. They like stability and loath the instability and relative unpredictability around the types of actions an unconventional thinker like Trump engages in. They want their binky or blanket.
Trump is the type of thinking that made this country great. It's how we used to think before this generation (or two) of comfortable opportunistic dullards showed up and told us we must adhere to their conventions.
SO they could tell us how "smart" they are, don't resist them. They know the future and theirs is the "right" way.
Screw that and screw them. We've been stuck in this rut of meaningless conventional, "inevitable" predictability for too long.
The average person largely knows this. It's how you got Trump in the first place.

I tried that venting of frustration and discovered it doesn't help. You are still just as frustrated after your primal scream of rage as you were before. Even more importantly, if, in your moment of rage, you break something, and that something is important, you have to replace what you broke, and that costs real world money.

It took a few moments of self-destructive rage to learn. I might be slow, but I do learn.

Except for last night and my shouted tirade as I marched up and down the hallway. That was therapeutic.

226 Harsanyi and Hanson have it right, of course. But Ace has it wrong. Trump IS urban, very much a New Yorker, and I guess a conservative. Anyway, he's governing as one. And Trump is definitely of the elite class, as well, if that term means anything.

But it really doesn't. The real flaw is that we've internalized the left's notion of a very few classes, two or three, normally. And that's just a model based on Marx's blather. But it gets interpreted as a matter of style. Since that itself is judged in a very shallow manner, this talk comes to nothing. A real established upper class simply wouldn't flaunt it the way both Trump and his enemies do.

Really, the best writer on this is David Brooks, now that Tom Wolf and Florence King are dead.. With Brooks, it's not a matter of what he is trying to say, but really in what he DOES say - and show - in his writings. And Brooks, like all pseudo-upper class types, it's all about fashion. But he does see that something has been lost with the death of the old WASP elite; he just doesn't know what it is.

But to the main point, it's absolutely true that Trump has so far done more to reestablish the rule of law than any American politician of my lifetime. The tow points are not unrelated; rule by the wealthy fashionistas is inherently lawless; they change the rules with the phases of the moon.

242 166----If we want to talk about being unpresidential, and bullying, then you have to start with Obama: he was fond of not just attacking his political foes, but segments of the American public.

303 It is utter Barbara Streisand that Obama did not come under scrutiny by the left because of his manner of speaking. The fact is the left is rarely critical of leftists holding public office or positions of power. The exception is where leftist factions are dueling and the person is no longer seen as useful to the leftist power structure. If Hillary won, Weinstein would have been safe. Hillary loses and other leftists want to marginalize her, so Weinstein goes. Notice how the Clintons and others are trying to salvage the reprobate known as Al Franken. The leftist believe he has further use down the road.

305 it's popular for leftists to say DT sounds "authoritarian." It is based on nothing but their considerable use of "right" to mean"fascist," when right is actually small gov., and the left are the totalitarians.

So I kinda wish that those writing in favor of DT would quit buying into the left's propaganda language -- or else tell me what he has said that sounds "authoritarian"

For that matter, the people who call him "unfit," "mentally unstable," etc. are the ones who are crude and vulgar. Trump's funny, and he never even gets that way unless someone attacks him first -- another detail those berating him never mention.

Their idea of "not crude" is John McCain or Mitt Romney -- taking the left's abuse without saying anything -- and with actually taking the left's part if someone attacks them.

306 Ooops, one last thing -- notice how these chicken-sh--- writers are soooo afraid of the big, bad leftist MSM calling them names, that they ae always careful to call DT a bunch of unfair, denigrating adjectives before saying "but he's okay"?

Maybe they should get over their fear and stop with that cautionary "but I'm not one of those horrible Deplorables" in their writing.
