Tariffs as a weapon to get the other side to drop their own unfair practices seems, on paper at least, to be defensible. If we did a live fire re-enactment of D-Day right now, it would be horrible. There's nothing inherently wrong with a trade imbalance (deficit/surplus). It just means one side wants cash as much as the other side wants goods.
And importing cheap foreign goods means we don't have to waste our time manufacturing low-margin crap when our workers and capital can be used for more productive (i.e. profitable) things. However, that level of imbalanced balance may be arrived at through more or less free market forces, or via external pressures (tariffs, etc.). It very much is for some of us. It's very pleasant music, don't get me wrong. We had the Number One smooth jazz station in the country down here for years and I listened to it a lot. Even got to meet Spyro Gyra's Jay Beckenstein once at a small concert with Ramsey Lewis. Nice guy, he gave me their bass player's phone number when I told him I was a bassist locally. I couldn't afford to buy one of his basses, but still it was a nice gesture. Never did call him. I could've reached out and touched Lewis while he was playing piano. Tariffs are just a tool to supposedly level the playing field . When used improperly they can cause significant damage to all parties.

There is a myth of "Free Trade", that it will magically turn communists into "capitalists" that respect human rights, don't pollute, and it will turn the world into a peaceful joyous place ... by MAGIC.
China uses our silly notions to abuse and game us, as they methodically plan to infiltrate and conquer US. The economy has picked up and our trade deficit just hit a record high in May, and has gone up consistently. Meanwhile China buys up parts of Hollywood, (apparently seeing how well it has worked for the Soviets), and is extending their dogma into our universities, as we freely continue to educate them and pass on state secrets (how they they get personal data on all federal employees?) Capitalism is not a government system, it happens under the umbrella of a system with liberty and justice for all. It also happens in communist regimes, BUT those regimes also use the power of the state to manipulate the use of said CAPITAL. For them, humans are capital to be used like machines, air is the place to cheaply dump the soot from their coal, American tech is something to be taken freely, etc. Who is to say that the powerful of China can't better use "capitalism" than our "free trade (and entitlement) system", which has to pay the "tax" of respecting individual liberty, cleaning the air, fighting the wars, developing the tech (and having it stolen)? So they have 10% "capitalists" and still have over a billion to use as slaves with no real "rights". And they maintain iron fist control of their immigration, while we fight "open borders enemies" from within. Interestingly enough, the director for "Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults" at the cathedral in St. Paul, MN, was a former Anglican, and married. Someone's who EO would known better than I do, but as I understand it-there is not one single spiritual leader equivalent to the Pope. All Bishops are equal and the Orthodox Church is divided into several national councils. The head of the Coptic Orthodox Church is very important but not supreme. Since having a Pope was one of the issues that the EO split from the RCC, I can't see them getting back together to in, turn, have another Pope. But *actually* being racist--even if everybody on the earth had ever been--can be compared to the a potential case where a person thought in a non-racist way.
