Seven In Ten Americans Feel "News Fatigue," With 77% of Republicans Feeling News Burnout

I definitely feel this. The harpies shriek with the same intensity every single day, with an apparently infinite capacity to be outraged or claim imminent Final Victory based on whatever Jake Tapper and the gang fart out on CNN.

Pew Research:

Almost seven-in-ten Americans (68%) feel worn out by the amount of news there is these days, compared with only three-in-ten who say they like the amount of news they get. The portion expressing feelings of information overload is in line with how Americans felt during the 2016 presidential election, when a majority expressed feelings of exhaustion from election coverage.

While majorities of both Republicans and Democrats express news fatigue, Republicans are feeling it more. Roughly three-quarters (77%) of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents feel worn out over how much news there is, compared with about six-in-ten Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (61%). This elevated fatigue among Republicans tracks with them having less enthusiasm than Democrats for the 2018 elections.

Are you guys feeling this? And how do you deal with it?

Keeping off Twitter is useful to me. Also, I almost never watch any news or Fox any more. It's just too much.

And I don't think it's necessarily "news fatigue" so much as it is "outrage fatigue."

We aren't getting significantly more news than we did back in the Bush admin, but the media sure does have the outrage meter dialed up to 11 constantly.

And when I do feel it I either go do something outside/with family or spend more time here with the Horde.

That's not sarcasm either. Sometimes when you all are really heavy talking about some bad news politics I'll step away, but for the most part it's a great escape.

85 I get my morning news here from JJ, and do not watch any network or cable news.

Listen to the radio in the morning, either talk or sports talk. This morning was interesting on local sports talk, as they were talking about the Eagles. A caller called in and said he was on the left, but not anymore because of the tone deafness in the media with what's happening, especially with the anthem protests. He said if he went into work and spent the first 5 minutes protesting, he'd be out of a job. He called them out, and as soon as he hung up the host said "See, they think if you don't side with Chris (the caller), you're wrong".

They actually put another caller on the air who called them out on that. Pretty eye-opening, and a positive that the average person actually gets it and is just as frustrated as me.

But then some Lefty publicly steps on her/his dick, or the economy improves some more, or Donaldus Maximus bitchslaps Whoa! Fat some more, and that news makes me feel we are still winning!!

127 How can you feel burned out and depressed over the news?!?! We finally have a president pushing for what we want, and half the news is reporting on his successes despite unified, global opposition, while the other half is more and more desperate wishcasting for some crazy event to remove Trump. The latter, of course, being random Twitter lines Trump trolls the media with. It's pure win, and brings a smile to my face because I know the left is utterly despondent.

Another way of looking at it: have I ever enjoyed a presidency as much as I am now? Not in the slightest. And when I do feel sad, it's only because a former "conservative" voice I respected and trusted has been revealed as a backstabbing asshole, and I'd much rather know the truth than be deceived.

Start asking to change the channel. Ask everywhere you go. Enough people start asking, and maybe we can move the news back to its proper place: after dinner, for half an hour. There isn't that much actual news. The reason we have this idiot non-stop breaking-news-about-Donald-Trump's-ice-cream! is because cable news has to fill all those TV screens 24 hours a day.

How about propaganda fatigue.
Used to be everyone accepted the propaganda, but now there is the internet which lets countering voices be heard. I think we are in a "golden age" of push back against the machine. Since the push back is strong, the usual elements in the media are trying to outlast, wear out and shout down the dissenting voices, all the while claiming to be the dissenting voices.

It's like pro Trump voices are rolling a boulder up a hill, while the never Trumpers are pushing it down from the other side.

I had to jack up the lawn tractor and put boards under the wheels to get off the effin stump. Now that is excitement baby!

And I did it all by myself, and it didn't cost me a dime. It was very entertaining and quite rewarding to accomplish and persevere over adversity.

Later I might go try to dig up some of those stumps if they are ripe. You can't really dig up a stump until it is fully ripened. Not without heavy equipment that is expensive to subcontract.

169 When it comes to the Hate Trump Media, I don't think it's fatigue so much as it is fascination to see how over-the-top crazy they have become.

Every day is a whole new level of insanity and I think it's hilarious.

174 Feeling it bigly.

I pretty much turn off anything but local or topical news. I unsubscribed from a lot and ignore a lot. I've given up on trying to convince anyone of anything because we're so totally about our tribes, not truth or cooperation.

I am reassured knowing that others feel this way. I sensed it before it was quantified here. It's a good thing at the end of it. That sentiment will likely ensure swing voters are apathetic to the left and continue to drive anti-establishment turnout.

Even though I was absolutely right to be - of course I am always right, just like everyone else, right? - I was pretty fired up the first couple years of Obama. While he stayed off the rails, I eventually became fatalistic and stopped caring. We're either going to deal with the trainwreck or we won't, but it's not going to be me that stops dealing first. Freaking out about it diminished me, not the opposition. The left is in similar throes, and while I do not believe they have the maturity to arrive at the realization that constant belligerence is no way to live, I certainly hope in the next year or so they tire of their own antics as some of us original Tea Partiers did (before that became some weird coopted amalgam of new establishment and old establishment hanger-ons seeking help with momentum).

If my belief - that this exhaustion will do nothing to help the establishment and may serve to maintain Trump's base - they'll have to come to heel eventually, as it will eventually show through that their cries elicit no empathy among the constituents they need to regain if they want to even share with the deplorables the mantle of power and influence they so crave.

187 It's not so much news fatigue but outrage, hair on fire screaming that I'm tired of.
Honestly, the HQ is where I get my news. Tucker, sometimes the Five, if I'm in the mood for screaming.
Local news is a joke. I check a few sites for local stuff but the alphabet soup networks are screaming to a blank screen as far as I'm concerned.
BY being all in on outrage, and being too dumb to realize when Trump trolls them, the stupidity level is amazing. I don't need anyone to tell me how to feel. If all you're going to do is lie to me then I don't need the noise.
Also, is it just me? Do all the left liberal wymyn on any TV show, including FOX, have screeching, blackboard through a table saw voices? Is that a criterion?

Posted by: Winston at June 05, 2018 03:04 PM (wgCUV)

188 I watch almost no TV news (beyond a bit of local news). To pick up stories that _should_ be making news but aren't, I scan AoS, Instapundit, and Althouse. (There are a lot more blogs that I bring up, but those are the big three.)

Plus I am not on any social media. None. Who needs that?

It's why I rarely use tools like Google. Their searches are predictable in terms of the biased results they return. Search any issue and the top returns are almost always liberal sources.
Weekends I mostly read books. Very limited media. I have also mostly turned off TV. Only very limited, select programs of interest.

News? Which means I fast forward through the segments that don't interest me. Or, as often as not, just delete the whole recording unwatched.

255 I definitely have news fatigue, but it doesn't hinder my fervor to vote.

Many of the issues in the news cycle, I have already come to grips with in my mind. So the daily drip doesn't register with me as much.

For instance, I already have known Trump didn't collude with Russia 18 months ago, so the news that comes out about it is really just filling in the backstory of how devious and underhanded our FBI and such are.

Blogs like this give me a chance to read the particulars of the mechanisms used to derail American society by the bastards deriving their living from it, while not having to listen to talking heads play political tennis on the television.

There is nothing more mind-numbing then watching the paid actors on cable news telling me that a chicken is a goat on one side and that a chicken is cow on the other. How's about you just present the facts and I'll decipher them and absorb them in a fashion I find most logical?

That's why I'd rather get my news from AoS or Lucianne or Drudge or whatever then to watch the magic talk box.

303 I suffer from post traumatic fake news disorder. Basically the cure resides in restricting yourself to reading MSM headlines. Don't force yourselves to read the article, certainly don't force yourself to watch the news anchor. It will only make you angry. You will sit there refuting everything they say sentence by sentence and impotently raging that there's nothing that can be done about the millions of idiots that never question any of it.

By only reading the headlines, you *know* how they will spin the story. You know what they'll omit, what they'll emphasize, the little hints they'll drop to guide you into thinking the right way. You develop a sixth sense for it to the extent that you could write the article yourself if you worked for WaPo. So it's unnecessary to actually torture yourself by reading it.

One of the great liberating things about the Internet is it does eventually allow for real information to get out. May have to dig a bit but its there. And the media hates the crap out of that.

Does Fred Grandy still do his morning drivetime show?

One thing I loved in DC was C-SPAN radio. That was the magic propaganda-revealing red pll for me: hearing a speech, hearing during commute, then getting home to see it reduced to a one or two sentence soundbite on the evening news (or The Daily Show) ---- and seeing how in doing this they completely perverted what had actually been said/taken place/

And yes, The Daily Show does the same dang thing as the nightly news, they're just more jokey and obvious about it. Shape the story by choosing which clips/soundbites they select.

I have a nice Sony flatscreen TV that came with my RV and which has full cable service as part of my deal at the campground where I live and work, but it has not been turned on since early on the morning of November 9, 2016 when I watched DJT become POTUS and the deadly threat of a Hillary presidency fall in ruin. This is literally true. I occasionally watch clips on Youtube, and when DJT makes a public appearance I usually watch the replay on Right Side Broadcasting on my Mac.

I recently posted an essay on the subject of Fake News on my blog that I have recently decided to bring back from the darkness to which it descended during the days of the Obama administration. You can find it linked in my nic.

389 Are you guys feeling this? And how do you deal with it?

Keeping off Twitter is useful to me. Also, I almost never watch any news or Fox any more. It's just too much.

I've never been on Twitter or Facebook, and now I'm so glad...bcz I think it has helped me retain my sanity. Also, do not watch any TV News if choice is up to me.

I have reduced my news consumption more than any other time in my life. Knowing so much of it is totally made up helps. It's a struggle though, since I've always been a news junkie.

I come here to find out a lot...using it to buffer...and because someone almost always makes me laugh.
Plus, I can vent, and that helps. Also, other people share things of critical importance.

I think old TV shows help. Ones without messages our culture is jamming down our throats. It was one of those things I think happened subconciously. It's retro shows. I find those are what I have on in the background a lot. Especially old sitcoms...there are a lot of stations like that now. It's weird, bcz I used to be an early adapter on new shows...now I don't watch any. I think it must be some self protection mechanism, bcz I find it strange to be doing this.

Getting outside into nature helps.

I struggle with totally checking out of all info, bcz it feels that is an abdication of my civil duty, and one of the reasons we are in this place in our country, is because of people who have checked out. I see it with my friends. So I feel I do need to keep an oar in, to take action (like recently on the TBS calls.)

So, it's a lot of things really. But laughter and other sane people help the most.

No, that is not true, you have to take into account how the Hard Left now controls ALL of the mainstream media, with the exception of some parts of Fox. How do people deal with overload and burnout like this? They turn it off, right there.

But what that means is that now 77% of Republicans and 61% of Democrats have stopped listening to the MSM. THIS is why all of their shit-throwing is having so little effect - the great majority of the country has now tuned them out. They can say anything they want, most of the country will never hear it.

No. He was on WMAL and was replaced awhile ago. I have not listened since I got Sirius with the new car but beieve they now have Mary Walter and some Vince guy from the Daily Caller. They were not bad but the commercials were unbearable. Probably about 15-20 minutes of show per hour.

Their constant shrieks about how much they hate President Donald Trump and the Deplorables that voted for him are music to my ears.

Now, if you are actually expected news from the MFM, then I can see how that would be tiring. However, I don't understand why anti-Lefties seek any affirmation from the MFM since they are lying, treasonous propagandists.

408 First and foremost please define what is considered news today. Breaking news this, breaking news that. Ugh. I don't need to be constantly barraged all hours of the day. Turn off notifications on your phone, reduce you social media content, watch something else in the tube besides any news channel of your choice, and you'll find your stress/anxiety levels dropping very quickly. The best thing that I've done in the last year is stopped bookfacing (missus handles that for us), limited my news intake for the tv to no more than 30mins, and spend time doing other stuff.

I feel better and actually am more pleasant to be around at least according to the missus.

There are mysteriously all these shootings in Portland now. Somehow, there is no connection to being a sanctuary city, even when the shooter is an illegal.

448 Of course there's too much news because we have so many more providers and a 24-hour cycle.
The other day I was eating, and of course the restaurant had a television on the wall. It was showing the NBA playoff analysis...the day before the game.

This went on with three guys talking about the game. At the same time, there was a ticker running along the bottom. Talking about the game.
Over the talking heads there were blurbs constantly coming up, talking about the game.
All about 24 hours before it had even been played. In a league that plays an 82 game season and oh so many playoff games.
How much more is there to say about LeBron James at this point? Not to pick on him, but if you're going to have all that coverage, what should you talk about? You can't not talk about him (it's the NBA finals, and he's carrying one of the two teams in it). But what else is there really to say and fill up an hour-long analysis show with three analysts and multiple feeds.
Imagine eating a 24-hour meal while hooked up to an intravenous pump and a feeding tube. That's how one lives unless you shut some of this stuff out/turn it off.

I basically just bounce between here, Drudge, and The Gateway Pundit on a daily basis.
I cut cable years ago - which is how long I've tuned out of Fox News.

I use YouTube to listen to sometimes listen to Mark Levin et al.

I usually listen to some of El Rushbo's show a couple-three times a week.

That's about it.
Mostly I just have to keep from reading too many opinion articles. (I read every article Coulter and Buchanan publish.)

I would not describe myself as burnt out on the news.

But I would describe myself as a bit wary in waiting for bastards like Brennan, Yates, Comey, Clapper, Clinton, and Obama to investigated to the hilt by a prosecutor.
The damned Deep State ought to be held to account for the horrific damage they have done to America.
I hold out hope at some point, somebody is going to step up to the plate and get an independent counsel appointed, and then we'll see justice.
But I know better than to hold my breath. And, yes, it's been a bit taxing.
