1 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday June 2, 2018. On this day in 1924 Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act into law, granting citizenship to all Native Americans born within the territorial limits of the United States.

18 Good morning. A chilly 50 degrees here. My kind of summer.

On the recycling link. This is what I tried to explain to a friend a few months back. They were watching the garbage/recycle pickup in their neighborhood that is now being done by the low cost provider. The truck picked up both garbage and the recycle into the same truck. I told them that the truck probably has separate compartments for them, but, it's a good chance it's all going to the landfill. I said the only thing that has value is the aluminum and metal.
Oh Noessss they cry. What about all of the cardboard and paper???? I tell them this gets shipped to China. I tell them that if their was any real value in the recycle they would pay you for it. They would not believe me....Oh well.

They tried that recycling BS here. It was a huge scam. You had tyo buy special yellow bags for food type garbage and everything else went to "recycle". They actually separated out the aluminum and steel cans the rest just went to the dump. People started raising hell about the shitty yellow bags so they ended the program and then added a $35/year fee to your property taxes to make up for the lost revenue. Which was what the whole program was always about anyway, just another tax.

Before I retired, the company I worked for got onto the recycle bandwagon. This was back about 1992. All of the cardboard we received was put into a compacter and recycled. Plus we got some money for it. 10 years later everyone is recycling. My boss wants to know why we are now paying to have it hauled away. I tell her, there's too much of it, so it's not worth anything. She wouldn't believe me. Had me and some other schook work 2 weeks making phone calls trying to find someone to pay for it.
No luck.

I was thinking about the Bill Kristol tweets in the last thread.

It occurs to me that the statement "Conservative ethics are now entirely situational ethics" is literally meaningless.

What does he mean by "conservative"? What does he mean by "ethics"? This is no different from a three-year-old screaming "I WANT!"

"Situational ethics" are no ethics at all. It seems like another way to say "The end justifies the means". What end? Whatever I want. What means? Whatever it takes to get what I want.

28 Household recycling has long been a feel good scam, with little practical 'gains' for the environment.

The steel and Al has a little scrap value; the paper and plastic wounds up being burnt for the btu value (if the local greenies even allow that air pollutin' activity), and the glass is just junked for the most part.

The only time I vigorously 'recycled' was when it cost me money to not do so, like when they charged by the bag for trash at the curb.

These basic facts about recycling have been known for years and years, but facts rarely matter.

And so it goes.

I was involved with the recycling people for decades. They want everything for nothing. A bunch of more crooked people you'll never find.

In the end I ended up firing the employee responsible for providing the recycled material in just the right fashion to suit the recyclers, whose wage was covered by the monies I would receive for the material, and basically gave the stuff away in bins. There was zero money to make except for occasional bursts when the economy would overheat and shortages of some material would appear for a short time. Eleven months of famine and one month of good dollars doesn't pay the wages for twelve months a year.

They always would claim, if you just do this or that, buy this equipment, we'll be able to pay you more. But it never worked out that way.

36 The only time I vigorously 'recycled' was when it cost me money to not do so, like when they charged by the bag for trash at the curb.

Lansing has recently* gone to 'single-stream' curbside recycling, wherein you just toss everything recyclable in the bin instead of separating it. I strongly believe that some city councilmember's cousin gets a couple hundred thousand a year to run a 'sorting' facility and everything just ends up getting thrown out.

* "within the last ten years" counts as "recently" if you don't pay attention to things in general

And so it goes.

there's noting on the radio here anyway. We have one decent station but it is a low power "community service" station and it fades in and out badly even though their transmitter is only about 5 miles from my house. The rest of the commercial stations are all religious, new country, or soul. Mostly I play music through my computer feeding the receiver.

I don't think so. I buy Milorganite fertilizer for lawn and garden. It's kinda pricey. Allegedly the company that makes the stuff from Milwaukee sewage even still has to subsidize the cost of the material and sell it at some loss.

Indeed. If "recycling" were cost-effective, they would pay you for the stuff, rather than charging you (pretty much the only exception is aluminum cans, and yep, in most areas you can get paid for bringing those in rather than giving them away to the "recycling" con artists for free).

They
tried that recycling BS here. It was a huge scam. You had tyo buy
special yellow bags for food type garbage and everything else went to
"recycle". They actually separated out the aluminum and steel cans the
rest just went to the dump. People started raising hell about the shitty
yellow bags so they ended the program and then added a $35/year fee to
your property taxes to make up for the lost revenue. Which was what the
whole program was always about anyway, just another tax.

I am also amazed at how little glass or aluminum I use since I quit drinking.

Most of my trips to the dump it is a large bag of kitchen garbage my yard work clippings and a milk crate delivery boxes and junk mail.

My ex's older sister was a stew for TWA back when it was considered a really cool job. She did international routes back when that was also considered mysterious and cool.

I've seen pictures of her coming back from London and Rome and Paris dressed in the latest fashions. Those were the days when stewardesses were hotties.
