Claim: John McCain Wants His Wife Cindy to be His Senatorial "Successor"

This is so awful, it just might even be true.

As Arizonans prepare for their final salute to Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., Republicans and political pundits in the state privately tell Newsmax they expect the appointment of his wife, Cindy, to succeed him in the Senate.

Of course, no one in the Grand Canyon State who spoke to us wants to go on record discussing what will happen when the ailing McCain no longer holds his seat. But those who did, agree almost unanimously, Cindy McCain following John in the Senate through appointment by Gov. Doug Ducey, R-Ariz., is a near certainty.

"I've always assumed that was the arrangement," said a friend of the McCain family since John's 1973 return from captivity in Vietnam.

A former Republican senator who served with McCain agreed:

"I don't know if this [succession] has been formalized, but that's what people who know John tell me."

America is less and less of a Republic every single day.

5 Oh, sure. We don't need Arizona. We don't need them to pull off MAGA.

But it sure would be nice if Arizona chose to allow their citizens to decide on their own representation.

I'm pretty sure we fought a war or two about that issue. Pretty sure there was loss of life.

7 Back to the days of Lurleen Wallace. Though apparently the practice of "widow's succession" was not uncommon last century; per Wikipedia (I know, I know, not guaranteed accurate, but it's what I have at a pinch) wives have succeeded deceased husbands in Congress almost 50 times.

162 Mikey, the upset may have a teensy weensy bit to do with the fate of the country and its future - and nothing to do with elected figures exercising their power. In fact, that's definitely what it is. You might have noticed the near total absence of any legislative progress since Trump was inaugurated. The Senate is the main problem - the GOP in the Senate. So, you know, people who understand how things work and actually are concerned about some durable relief being achieved really don't want to see a seat wasted on twit widow.

Besides, in AZ, there is a spectacular situation setting up, where the gov (allegedly GOP) could appoint the second strongest contender for the open Flake seat to the potentially soon open McCain seat. Leaving the GOP a better chance of taking (can't really say "holding" in this case, except humorously) both seats.

"But I don't want Cindy McCain!" Then maybe the appointment law should be different? Until such time as it is changed this can be done. Kicking a fit about it is pointless.

I have read many Horde members waxing nostalgic for state legislatures appointing senators. If you want to go back to that, then these are the sort of deals that will happen again, just like they happened back then.

190 In a way, even worse than political positions going to appointed spouses and relatives is the way that offspring of office holders get elected to office themselves based solely on name recognition. In PA, there used to be a governor named Bob Casey, then his son Bob Casey Jr. ran for Senate and won. I can think of the Tafts in Ohio and the Landrieus in Louisiana, and there are undoubtedly thousands of other examples across the country at every level of government.

It doesn't speak well of the intelligence of voters, and suggests that rule by noble families may be hard-wired in our genes, in which case a republic is swimming against the tide and may be doomed to failure in the long run.

Posted by: rickl at May 31, 2018 07:43 PM (sdi6R)

191 So why would the other Arizona pols, especially Ducey, go along with this? Cindy has enough money that she could slip any of them who matter a few hundred thou, PLUS guarantee them employment for life at a cushy, do nothing, charity job or whatever. She's worth at least $200 million, probably more. That's why no one will dare to stand up to her.

The good thing is that my guess, just based on her character, is that she's in this for 2 years, and then out. She wants to prove that she was just as good as that layabout John ever was, and she thinks she deserves to rule in her own right after letting him front for her all these years.

Plus, she would never stoop to campaigning, and having to pretend to actually listen to the plebs. She's not gonna go for that at all. So 2 years of showboating, and she'll be done - at least that's my guess.

No that is not why we are outraged. The point of this entire post seems to have flown over your head. There is a huge difference between can and should in a lot of areas of life. I have seen no one on this thread arguing that Ducey can't appoint Cindy McCain. We are, instead saying he absolutely shouldn't and should be punished politically if he does.

We are saying this for a variety of reasons that have nothing to do with Ducey's executive powers.

Reason 1- The United States does not have royalty. In fact the Constitution explicitly forbids titles of nobility. Political dynasties are nothing but noble families by another name and are repugnant.

Reason 2- McCain has been a stain and a pox on the Senate and has actively worked against almost every ideal the Horde holds dear. We expect his wife to be as bad or worse for this country than He was.

Reason 3 - There are better, actually conservative, people who could be appointed and who could help move this country in a better direction.

306 This happened before. However most people don't know Arizona's amazing history.

A con artist named James Addison Reavis pulled perhaps the greatest con job of all time when he spent YEARS traveling to Mexico and Spain in the 1870s and 1880s doctoring ancient Royal Spanish Land Grant Deeds in dusty old government libraries to create a paper trail that a certain Spanish aristocrat had long ago been granted ownership of the land area we now call Arizona. Because the US agreed in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo to honor all Spanish Land Grants in territories ceded to the US by Spain and Mexico in 1848, this would mean that this aristocrat's descendants -- or the owners of his estate's holdings -- would literally own all of Arizona.

And here's the point: Reavis had already purchased the rights to this aristocrat's estate, which he got from a destitute starving prospector who had won it in a poker game (or some such colorful origin story). The actual estate itself was worthless because in reality the aristocrat's estate had zero land holdings -- but after Reavis's sophisticated document forging, he had set up the whole scheme. To cement his claim, he then married a teenage Mexican girl who just happened to be the distant heir of the same aristocrat.

He then walked in to the the U.S. Territorial Office with his deed and claimed ownership of the entire state of Arizona. Shocked, the Feds started investigating his claims, only to their utter astonishment finding the apparently authentic (but actually forged) documents in the old Spanish libraries. They had no choice but to honor and certify his claim.

Overnight, Reavis became the richest man in the world, as he owned every square inch of Arizona. He demanded rent from every single person in the territory, and they were required to pay. He declared himself "The Baron of Arizona" and rode around in a fancy carriage like a czar.

This went on for YEARS until some dogged US investigators invented new forensic techniques to finally prove the "ancient" land grant deeds were fakes. They arrested Reavis and threw him in jail for fraud. But he only served a comparatively short sentence.

They made a crappy movie about the story back in 1950 starring Vincent Price, but it was a low-grade B-move and didn't do the real story justice.

Anyway: The McCains are now the new Barons of Arizona.

329 Reason 1- The United States does not have royalty.
In fact the Constitution explicitly forbids titles of nobility.
Political dynasties are nothing but noble families by another name and
are repugnant.

Reason 2- McCain has been a stain and a pox on the
Senate and has actively worked against almost every ideal the Horde
holds dear. We expect his wife to be as bad or worse for this country
than He was.

Reason 3 - There are better, actually conservative,
people who could be appointed and who could help move this country in a
better direction.

BUT there is a clause of 120 days needed for counties to be notified for ballot printing, and some other (harrumph harrumph) time limitations, so midnight tonight is the cutoff for any appointee having to stand for reelection in November 2018. So that means that said appointee will not face an election until November 2020, and the winner of that election will serve a full 6 year term.

410 This is not about Jimmy Kimmel, BUT Jimmy Kimmel made a plea yesterday for people to ease up on Roseanne, citing her mental health issues...which people who know her know she has. It was a pretty well written statement of compassion...from Kimmel....on twitter.

People's reaction? Outsized repudiation toward Kimmel. Twisting of his words and meaning. Telling him mental illness does not cause racism and he was insulting the mentally ill. Then there were people saying it was not their job to be a support system, and they'd say whatever they wanted.

So they totally missed the meaning of his words and re-interpreted them in distorted ways.

There was one black guy who said he loved Roseanne, and always will and leave her alone.

So yes, Kimmel did a decent thing, and maybe getting a taste of his own medicine from the backlash was a good thing. Maybe he will learn how toxic and awful things are and how he has contributed.

Not in a mood to hate on him; just sickened people have lost their humanity.

The woman lost her show and her reputation. But some no name white chick from buttsville feels it is her duty to rip a woman to shreds, even though everyone is already doing that. And when told the woman has mental health issues, not giving one single compassionate pause....just being incensed she was told to give it some thought.

Really sickening. That's where we are as a society. There is no excuse for that. None.

Now I've bummed myself out.

(PS. Yes, Roseanne should have left Twitter, but her mental health issues probably caused her not to. So, ya know, that's when the rest of society cares and steps back. Well, a good, non-toxic one. Which we are not.)

Geez, sorry for the long post. Don't know how that happened.

411 Any state that would keep re-electing McStain is certainly capable of welcoming his wealthy-bimbo second wife to fill "The McStain Seat".

The damage will have been done, but if there's any justice there might still be enough Sheriff Joe voters left to cause Ducey to lose his governorship, And Mrs. McStain #2 to lose any re-election she might attempt. IIRC, One of the arguments was that state legislatures were corrupt and thus the appointment of Senators needed to be subject to a popular vote. This was probably true, but they ignored the intent of the Founders (shocked face), who tried to set up a federal power structure where there were multiple paths to office, to make it difficult for "factions" to game the system.

Thus President (four years via electoral college + National direct vote);
Senate (six years but appointed by State legislatures themselves subject to a popular vote within the entire State);
and House (two years via direct vote of their local constituents within a district).

The progs figured out that there was far more graft at the federal level and pushed the 17th Amendment!

My entire problem with advocates of 17th Amendment repeal is that many of them think that once that happens, we will be magically transported to a bygone era of true Statesmen inhabiting the upper chamber; a time when governance was simply wonderful...

Won't happen. The way the country is now, Senators voted on in the old pre-17th Amendment way will go from Senators bringing home the bacon to their State electorates to Senators bringing home the bacon to their State governments. If there were no blurred lines between state and federal power, I'd agree. But reread my post: Senators now are charged with bringing home the bacon to the electorate. If you get your wish, they will be charged directly by state governments to bring home the bacon. Hence no check on Federal power, or at least not nearly as great as you think.

Maybe, but it misses the point. The 17th amendment removed a critical barrier against power being taken from the states and exercised instead by the federal government. Of course I don't expect Senators to become better people, but I do expect state legislatures to be wary of federal power grabs.
