Ooooops!!! “Situated in south-east Siberia, the 3.15-million-ha Lake Baikal is the oldest (25 million years) and deepest (1,700 m) lake in the world. It contains 20% of the world’s total unfrozen freshwater reserve. Known as the ‘Galapagos of Russia’, its age and isolation have produced one of the world’s richest and most unusual freshwater faunas, which is of exceptional value to evolutionary science,” writes Wikipedia. The American Bible Society, a Philadelphia-based nonprofit that translates and distributes Bibles around the world, wants employees to agree to abstain from sex outside marriage — or resign. In a policy recently made public, the organization also defines marriage as only between a man and a woman. That means LGBT employees could be disqualified from working at the nonprofit. So could sexually active straight employees who live with a partner but are not married. Employees who don’t commit to the terms by Jan. 1, 2019, will be told to resign. The policy is a shift for the organization, which previously did not require staffers to abide by such an agreement. An interesting employment code. ![]() No. They are not ambulance chasers. Injury lawyers have historically used catchy jingles and memorable slogans to entice recovering patients to secure their services. Now, the 20-second TV or radio spot might soon be replaced with ads sent directly to the phones of patients as they sit in emergency rooms. NPR reports law firms specializing in personal injury are working with at least one digital marketing company to set up “geofences,” virtual perimeters that can be used to connect ad technology with a cellphone’s physical coordinates. Geofencing marketing is used to serve ads to people in small, specific geographical areas. In other cases, festivals or concert venues. In this case: hospitals. Marketer Bill Kakis told NPR that his company has geofenced “pretty much” every hospital in downstate New York and has now closed deals to advertise injury attorneys to people seeking medical care in the Philadelphia area. Hardware store joke (in the days before big box stores): Hardware store owner is short handed one day, some of the help is out sick or something, so he gets his wife to come in and help wait on customers. One guy comes in and she asks him what he needs, and he says, I need a little bastard file. She jumps back in high dudgeon, "How dare you use that language with me!" Her husband runs over, gets the guy his file, apologizes and gives him a discount to help smooth things over. He then explains to his wife that a bastard file is a proper term for that type of file and the guy meant no harm. A few hours later a another customer comes in, the wife asks him what he needs and he says he needs a file. She says, "I suppose you want one of those little bastards?" He says, outstretching his arms, "Oh no ma'am, I need a big sum-bitch about this long." Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 02, 2018 09:35 PM (8O3HH) 20

I was greeted by a disgusting smell from the front porch this morning. A big ol' buzzard flew off. He or something had drug up a dead possum carcass. It was nasty, covered with those nasty flies, and that aroma was just wafting everywhere. It was backing nicely in the sun. I had to get a pitchfork and dump that way out in the field. Speaking of exercise routines, I discovered a new one for senior citizens. First you get down on the floor and try to do a pushup. Then you roll over and try to do a situp. Then you try to get up off the floor without assistance. I got new mower blades on the lawn tractor. Getting the mower deck off wasn't real difficult, but getting it back on was a pain. Get down on the floor, try to position the mower deck. Get back up off the floor to get some leverage. Ok, so eventually, the deck is back on and then the engine wouldn't start. Ok, eventually it started and I went out to mow with the brand new blades and promple hit a rock hidden in the tall grass. Ok, fine. So I when I went to the local small implement dealer they refused to sharpen the old blades but offered to special order new after market blades. Ok, fine. After going online and finding what I needed, and had it delivered, I thought I should go get those special order blades because it would be the ethical thing to do, and they could be spares I could keep on hand in someplace special for the time I might need them. Of course, it might be ten years before I need them, but I would have them if I can remember the special place I put them in for safe keeping until I need them. Ok fine. When I went to the implement dealer this afternoon, they were closed; not open on Saturday afternoon. Ok fine. What ever. Story of my life. Who cares. 190 For those of you who are considering going to Gab, you need beware. Gab has a policy of not allowing you to threaten harm to other people, but they're okay with people threatening to dox you. Think about that. I was a gab investor, gab supporter and was completely in favor of Gab until I found that out yesterday. People threatened to dox me there, I did a backchannel conversation Andrew in which he specifically told me that it wasn't his problem. Needless to say, my Gab account is no longer active, so don't bother clicking on my link.
Posted by: Dick at June 02, 2018 10:24 PM (SRarZ) ++++ Vox Day also had a problem with them regarding libel. Someone posted something about him that he claimed was libelous and Gab refused to take it down and also were uncooperative somehow in his efforts to take legal actions against the poster. I don't use social media, so I just skimmed through his telling of the story when he told it. But, I think I have the essentials right. Basically, I believe Gab's position is that they will only act against posts that are overtly criminal, or if a court orders them to do something. Other than that, they don't police or help others police their content. Though I have lately read about them cancelling accounts linked to Soros and his minions of disruptors, so I guess that's another exception. Posted by: Anon Y. There are more stars in the sky that grains of sand on the earth, quoth Barky. This like everything else he says, is bullshit. How many grains of sand are there on the earth? Well, depending on what you estimate the average size to be, and how much volume of beach and other sand containing places, you come up with a number on the order of 10^18 to 10^21. That's a YUGE number, but less than Avogadro's Number by a factor of 100. How many stars are in the sky? Depends on how you define "sky". If visible stars are what you mean, this number is only in the thousands. If by sky, you mean the whole Milky Way Galaxy, then you've got, well, there are some huge error bars on this number. Anywhere from 100 - 400 billion. Still vanishingly small compared to the number of grains of sand on the earth. Now, if by sky you mean the entire observable universe, then the rough ballpark number you get is on the order of 10^24. So, there are about 500 to 1000 times as many stars in the whole damned observable universe as there are grains on sand on the earth. Now, note a mole of water, 1 gram, contains 10^23 number of molecules. Thus a mere 10 grams of water, 10 drops, contains as many H2O molecules are there are stars in the entire Universe. The entire reason that I brought up the whole doxxing thing on Gab is that 1100 or so of you folks have gone over to gab and last few days, and my bubble has been completely burst over there with my conversation with Andrew last night. When he told me that our identities were not private anymore, I was done. The sad part is is I invested the better part of $500 into Gab when they're stock came out, and I'll probably never see that again, but we all know that I'm pissed that away on dirty whores in Portugal multiple times over.

This like everything else he says, is bullshit. How many grains of sand are there on the earth? Well, depending on what you estimate the average size to be, and how much volume of beach and other sand containing places, you come up with a number on the order of 10^18 to 10^21. -------- Now, now, publius. I'm sure he had lots of people counting those grains of sand. Top men. Or perhaps little dreamers doing the work Americans won't do. Don't care who wins the series, initially thought it was an improvement over the regular interminable season hockey in terms of quality (though that's fading a bit too - back to dump/chase, push/shove/hold/cross-check, boring), but this Washington-Vegas game, and the last one .... WTF with the announcing team?
You'd hardly know there are two teams on the ice. It's non-stop color and ooh-awing over the Capitals, but especially a handful of them, no matter what's actually happening. Went to do other things after the last Washington goal, which was a horrible break-down/give-away goal - described as a result of "fore-check" hockey by Washington, which is ridiculous. One Vegas player effed up with the puck, badly, another one failed to do his basic job to cover the other guy, and the goalie was too passive. It was an embarrassing give-away/collapse, described as if it was an Orr end/end rush or something by Washington. Is there some corporate/league/other reason the Capitals must win or be worshiped in this series? The lead announcer is usually excellent, but last 2 games the discussion has been pretty silly. And speaking of today's screw ups, I just found another one.
See? I wanted to make a two layer pudding pie. The lemon layer went in the the pie shell like is should; instant pudding, two cups of cold milk, stir. What could go wrong? Ok, fine. The lime layer didn't set up, so I put it on top of the lemon layer and put the pie in the 'fridge thinking it would set when chilled. Nope. So I read the directions. The lime pudding isn't instant like the lemon and requires a cup of boiling water to dissolve the pudding mix, and then a cup of cold water to chill the pudding. I just spent the last half hour cleaning up the mess in the 'fridge. Today has been educational. Posted by: Skandia Recluse - don't tempt fate at June 02, 2018 11:14 PM (roQNm) 355

Busy day to day. Moved three vehicles with the tractor, and mowed the grass down where they sat, and then pushed them back. Went to the car show in Three Hills, and spectated, saw a lot of cool cars. Came home, started up the remaining three vehicles, moved them off the line, and mowed where they had been sitting. Drove one Studebaker up the road a mile, and back. Ran pretty good, too. The other Studebaker, a pickup, started OK, but I had to hotwire it, since the ignition switch was broken. Drove it over by the shop, and aired up the tires, and replaced the bad ignition switch. Starts off the key, now. Didn't tkae it on the road, no brakes at all. The '65 Oldsmobile was the hardest to start, took a lot of cranking and priming, but it ran fine once I got fuel to the carb. It's sitting by the shop, needs to have an alternator put in it.

I think the biggest number ever conceived of is Graham's number. The observable universe would not be able to hold it's digital representation is every Plank volume contained 1 digit. It can be expressed using some form of Knuth's up arrow notation, but even that's cumbersome. You have to go to the next step of iterating a tower of Knuth's up arrows. Things that are NOT Country Music.
* Rascall Flatts. merely Boyz to Men, with a barely perceptible twang. * Any Country "artist", who blends the slightest degree of "rap" into a song. PERIOD. * The Formulaic Mob, who think that any twangy song inclusive of the terms "truck", "mama", "train", "prison", etc., constitutes a "Country Song". (see David Allen Coe) * Florida Georgia Line. Countless BRITISH actors proffer forth a more believable "twang", tan those assholes. * "Country" acts...dudes who wear ball caps vs. proper Cowboy Hats. They are Legion. Exemption: Merle wore a trucker-type cap back in the day. Not a ball cap, though. Many other acts skirt the edge of "Country or Not", but survive. Garth Brooks brought the Rock Star Performance ethos into Country Music, and broadened it's horizons greatly, as a result. The exemption? Most of what Brooks has written and performed is some superb Country Music, in SPITE of his Rock background. Shania Twain strove to Pop-ify Country Music, and her sales record would suggest that she largely, succeeded. But that was sales in the '90s. Not so much, now. There is still a HUGE market, for straight up, pure country. Press the albums, and they will buy. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 03, 2018 12:32 AM (QzJWU) 487

But the accents in Glasgow? Dear lord, I don't think even Google Translate can puke out something better than 50% accurate. No wonder the Scots make Scotch. It's the ONLY way to render them comprehensible. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 03, 2018 12:40 AM (QzJWU) 498

The Geordies are notoriously incomprehensible. The VIZ comic had a lot of fun at their expense.
In 2016 I went to Carlisle, which is what, 60 miles to the west of Newcastle, and everyone there spoke perfectly comprehensible Northern English. Hardly different from what I heard in Shropshire for five years. Hadrian's Wall, pff. In the North, the real barrier be the Pennines. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at June 03, 2018 12:43 AM (6FqZa) 501

true story: back in the mid-80's, i went to Ft Riley, KS, on what was called a "KPUP" tour, which was allegedly a way to get NG troops up to speed on AD stuff, but which wound up giving AD unit extra bodies they didn't have to give a shit about that they could stuff into crappy j*bs they didn't want to fuck their own people over with.
E-2/16 INF(M), Labor day Weekend. I'm out being the extra body with whomever is driving the track or 151 whilst the SNCOs/Brass play evaluator, learning nothing except that Riley is a shithole. one evening, it's nearing midnight, it' s about 100*F, 99% humidity, and every breath you take has to be chewed because of the insect content. i ask if it ever cools off there, and they said "Come back in January: the tanks freeze to the ground." i never went back. 518 ... Agreed. Many years ago I covered a concert for the local paper. Garth Brooks was the headliner. Don't know what he's like now but he put on one fantastic performance. Trisha Yearwood was just starting out. What a doll! Lovely voice and lovely person. But my favorite was Vince Gill. The man has talent dripping from his pores. As much as I like his singing, his guitar playing is extraordinary. After his set he stood around and chatted with the reporters far longer than he needed to. He was truly gracious.
Dream concert: Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, Roy Clark on various string instruments (preferably all acoustic) and vocals with Reba and Alison Kraus on vocals. SIGH! If the local country music station played their records I would start listening to it again. Most of what I hear there sounds like rock music to me. #KillerCats
Cat came in with a mouse a few minutes ago. Dropped it. Although bloody and bitten, mouse scrambled off. Two adults and three cats, moving furniture and looking all around, couldn't find it again. Great. Earlier, the in-town in-doors cat got out and vanished for a while. Came back just as we were about to give up waiting for it. Somehow when shooing it back indoors, I apparently missed that it had a trophy in its mouth. Milady mentioned that the cat was playing with one of its mouse toys instead of chowing down on dinner which was unusual. (Milady didn't have her glasses on.) Yeah, not a toy mouse. Still-warm bird. So uh, what killed Hot Air? I've been away for a long time. I think it was when Michelle Malkin sold it to Town Hall. I see things here at the horde are still quite active. Just by sheer volume in the one other comment thread I opened I am pleased to see such a vibrant discourse going on online. So many comment sections are being vanquished. Sure, private companies can do what they want and it's not technically limiting our speech in the sense of government censorship, but it's funny how Amazon decided after spending buckets of money to take over IMDb.com they decided that the comments sections that used to accompany every page were not "financially viable". No, you know what's not financially viable, Amazon? Giving me no reason to spend more than 1.5 minutes on a site you purchased. I'm never going to use it to buy tickets or subscribe to CBS All Access or whatever crap they're pushing this week.
Just an example. Hope this place doesn't die as well. Web 2.0? More like Web Stink.0. Jimbob out. Posted by: Jimbob the Great at June 03, 2018 03:51 AM (JqUSZ) Posted by: JT at June 03, 2018 03:52 AM (FaG8C) 596
Oh and I go back far enough to remember when Little Green Footballs used to not be a liberal mouthpiece. That guy turned into a tiny little megalomaniac.

So uh, what killed Hot Air? They switched to facebook comments ... most of the commentariat were anonymous, which was no longer possible ... plus having to sign up with facefart. This happened long after MM sold. Posted by: Off the reservation at June 03, 2018 04:02 AM (vWMNq) 598

best part about the leaked letter is that Trump tweeted about them leaking it before they could actually publish their "scoop", and then the NYT bitched about that on Twatter. see Twitchy for details.
