The Morning Report 5/28/18

LestWeForget.jpg

Good morning kids. Today is Memorial Day, so I'll give a brief overview of the big stories that carried over into the weekend and are continuing. First up, the weather is making news, with major flooding in and around the Baltimore area as well as a state of emergency preemptively declared by Florida Governor Rick Scott in advance of named storm Alberto. Stay safe if you are in either of those areas.

"Spygate" has now entered the lexicon and as a result of the truth of what we have all known or minimally suspected for at least a year, the Democrat-Left-Media complex is quite literally going absolutely mad with obfuscation, equivocation and just outright lies. The final bit to be revealed, as many have surmised is that Obama, with the help of his puppet master Valerie "the Farsi Ferret" Jarrett were actually behind the plot to spy on candidate and then President Trump in an effort to sabotage his campaign and then effectively overthrow his administration (while saving their collective asses in the process with the latter).

Mark Meadows, a big macher with the Freedom Caucus is signaling they are willing to sign on with some sort of Amnesty deal for the DACAns. Cave or strategic compromise? Discuss. It seems that despite Publix caving to Little Shitler the Camera Hogg, the cunning stunt might actually backfire politically on anti-NRA Democrats. In free speech news, it seems there is a huge backlash brewing across the pond with the persecution of Tommy Robinson who was jailed for reporting on the trial of the Muslim rape/grooming gangs, and Mark Levin ponders the damage to freedom our own press has inflicted over here.

Internationally, reports of the demise of the PDT-Whoa, Fat! summit may have been premature as the administration is still going ahead with preparations and RoK prexy Moon Jae-In says that Chunky has told him he is going to scrap his nukes after all. We shall see.

Lastly, today is Memorial Day, the day we set aside to honor and remember those Americans who for the past 242 years have laid down their lives in defense of this nation so that we all may be free. The day is of significance to me as I am named for the uncle I never met who was killed in action on Saipan in 1944 and will be forever 28 years old. I also pay tribute to those men of the 11th Armored Division who gave their lives to liberate my mother and her family from Mauthausen in May of 1945. Today, the youngest of those who survived (both as liberators and inmates) are now into their 90s and are passing into history. My fear is that when the last of them go, so to will the understanding of words like Pearl Harbor, Kasserine, Pelelieu, Anzio, Schweinfurt, Shuri Castle and the Hurtgen Forest. Considering what has been done to our culture and education system they may already be meaningless. What do words like Belleau Wood and the Marne mean to people of today? Or for that matter Chosin and Khe San, let alone San Juan Hill, Antietam or Valley Forge?

This is why, for me as I'm sure for everyone who had the terrible honor of hanging a gold star flag in their window, every day is Memorial Day. Lest we forget.

Finally, for anyone who does not understand the true meaning of Memorial Day, I leave you with the story of General Lucian Truscott, who in May of 1945 was sent by President Truman to dedicate the Sicily-Rome American Cemetery in Nettuno, Italy, where only a year earlier he had commanded troops in that theater of war.

Anyway, links from around the world, across the nation and up your street. Have a better one and remain blessed.

    Carentan, O Carentan
    by Louis Simpson

Trees in the old days used to stand
    And shape a shady lane
Where lovers wandered hand in hand
    Who came from Carentan.

This was the shining green canal
Where we came two by two
    Walking at combat-interval
    Such trees we never knew.

The day was early June, the ground
Was soft and bright with dew
Far away the guns did sound,
But here the sky was blue.

The sky was blue, but there a smoke
    Hung still above the sea
    Where the ships together spoke
To towns we could not see.

Could you have seen us through a glass
You would have said a walk
Of farmers out to turn the grass,
    Each with his own hay-fork.

The watchers in their leopard suits
    Waited til it was time,
And aimed between the belt and boot
    And let the barrel climb.

I must lie down at once, there is
    A hammer at my knee.
And call it death or cowardice,
    Don't count again on me.

    Everything's all right, Mother,
    Everyone gets the same
    At one time or another.
    It's all in the game.

I never strolled, nor ever shall,
    Down such a leafy lane.
I never drank in a canal,
    Nor ever shall again.

There is a whistling in the leaves
And it is not the wind,
The twigs are falling from the knives
That cut men to the ground.

    Tell me, Master-Sergeant,
The way to turn and shoot.
    But the Sergeant's silent
That taught me how to do it.

    O Captain, show us quickly
    Our place upon the map.
    But the Captain's sickly
    And taking a long nap.

    Lieutenant, what's my duty,
    My place in the platoon?
    He too's a sleeping beauty,
    Charmed by that strange tune.

    Carentan, O Carentan
    Before we met with you
We never yet had lost a man
Or known what death could do.

    * * * * *

    Vergissmeinnicht
    Keith Douglas
    1920-1944

Three weeks gone and the combatants gone
    returning over the nightmare ground
we found the place again, and found
the soldier sprawling in the sun.

The frowning barrel of his gun
    overshadowing. As we came on
that day, he hit my tank with one
like the entry of a demon.

Look. Here in the gunpit spoil
the dishonoured picture of his girl
    who has put:
    Steffi. Vergissmeinnicht.
    in a copyboook gothic script.

We see him almost with content,
abased, and seeming to have paid
and mocked at by his own equipment
that's hard and good when he's decayed.

But she would weep to see today
    how on his skin the swart flies move;
the dust upon the paper eye
and the burst stomach like a cave.

For here the lover and killer are mingled
who had one body and one heart.
And death who had the soldier singled
has done the lover mortal hurt.

(Capt. Keith Douglas, UK, was killed in action by mortar fire while advancing from Bayeux, 6/9/44)

    * * * * *

    (Son to Father...)
Do not call me, father. Do not seek me.
Do not call me. Do not wish me back.
We're on a route uncharted, fire and blood erase
    our track.

On we fly on wings of thunder, never more to
    sheathe our swords.
All of us in battle fallen - not to be brought back by
    words.

Will there be a rendezvous? I know not. I only know
    we still must fight.
We are sand grains in infinity, never to meet.
    nevermore to see light.

    (Father to Son...)
Farewell, then my son. Farewell then my conscience.
Farewell my youth, my solace, my one and my only.

Let this farewell be the end of the story,
A solitude vast in which none is more lonely,
In which you remained barred forever
From light, from air, with your death pains untold.
Untold and unsoothed, never to be resurrected.
Forever and ever an 18 year old.

    Farewell then.
No trains ever come from those regions,
    Unscheduled and scheduled.
    No aeroplanes fly there.

    Farewell then my son,
For no miracles happen, as in this world
    Dreams do not come true.

    Farewell.
I will dream of you still as a baby,
Treading the earth with little strong toes,
The earth where already so many lie buried.

This song to my son, then, is come to its close.

Extract from a poem by Jr. Lt. Vladimir Pavlovich Antokolski.

Killed in action, June 6th, 1942

7 Local press is still confused about which way to go with Trump and the fat one. They don't want Trump to secede of course and will do what it takes to dump on Trump. The media's overloads (NYT, etc.) haven't given them any clear direction yet.Meanwhile, in the gun free cities of Chicago and Baltimore, the shooting go on and on.

I am very wary, as we all are, of Phat Phucker, but that said I have been seeing reports that as nuts as he may be (and probably is), he sees a better "deal" for lack of a better word in actually distancing himself and North Korea from the Chi-Coms and moving more towards America.

Could be all smoke and mirrors "disinformatsiya," but it is intriguing if taken with the proverbial grain of salt.

Many legal experts have already stated that Mueller's witch-hunt is already hopelessly compromised and nothing he uncovers will be admissible in court. Of course they have never intended to go to court anyway. The whole thing is a drawn out charade designed to embarrass Trump. But it is embarrassing the Democrats instead.

53 The Battle of the Komandorski Islands was a USN attempt to intercept a Japanese reinforcement of the Aleutians. It became a running, daylight, long-range, gun-duel with a superior Japanese force - one of the very few battles of that type during the war with no submarine or aircraft involvement. Successful because the Japanese reinforcement turned back, USS Salt Lake City received damage and was saved when the accompanying destroyers charged the Japanese force, the Japanese breaking off to avoid a potential torpedo attack.

62 The sad part of Memorial Day is thinking of those that didn't make it to 21, which in WW2 was a lot of good men. (and not as many for the US as some places).

But thanks to socialists and dick-tators with dreams of globalism (where they run the show) ... we end up with war to stop tyranny. Yet now we have leftists plotting our next great global tyranny, with puppets and grifters like Obama and Hillary being the face of fascism.
Jordan Peterson seems to think we need to all just hold hands and give up our beliefs, then magically, global unity and peace. Reagan said the way to global peace is available today, by surrendering everything we hold dear. But Reagan was against that surrender, Peterson seems to be for it. (no Jordan, Hitler was not 'far right', and being "centrist" is often just propaganda for appeasement and gradualism/surrender)

82 It's a war movie pet peeve of mine that often GIs helmuts do not have the two parts, many times they just are wearing the inner fiberglass shell. In Battleground they have both parts. If you see in a movie and the guy has two rivets on the side its just the inner shell.
Posted by: Skip at May 28, 2018 07:17 AM (aC6Sd)

The steel helmet weighs several pounds, so not particularly comfortable. I'm sure the actors didn't want to tote that extra weight if they didn't have to.

Battleground is, IMHO, one of the best WWII movies ever filmed, told very much from a worm's-eye view of the fighting around Bastogne. Made immediately after WWII, all the correct equipment was easily available. The characters are obviously frightened for their own safety when the bullets start flying but do what they have to do. The one character that flees gets his karmic justice in the end.

An interesting feature of the movie is that it accurately depicts how isolated you would feel in an actual infantry firefight: due to weapon leathality everyone is spread out and concealed. I believe that phenomenon is termed the "empty battlefield" (or something like that). You almost never see the Germans during the movie.

Free Market is not a government system. Communism IS a government system, which controls the market ... for the benefit of the commies, which is just the 5% of the citizenry that act as a mafia with an army of enforcers, with the 95% under their harsh rule.

Americanism recognizes every citizen's liberty before God, and restricts government from becoming a police state of central planners. Under the umbrella of the Constitutional Republic, free markets can thrive. But not if we sell out to communist nations that want to destroy US, that use slaves, that pollute, that cheat and bribe our own politicians.

But we have been led down that commie primrose path since before Critical Theory, and we have some major corrections to make.

Well they went over to help and all of the flags they had placed were touching the ground! Dad flipped and would have no part of it so headed off to Lowes and bought some PVC pipe, cut it into lengths, and went back over and reset all 70 flags into his PVC bases. It caused a bit of a flap in the garden club but hey, we can't have the flag touching the ground, no matter how good your intentions.

130 Remembering my great-uncles and their lost shipmates today. Uncle Leon served aboard the USS Renshaw which was torpedoed while on patrol in the Mindanao Sea. Nineteen sailors were KIA but through herculean efforts, flooding was brought under control and she limped home.

Uncle Don was on the USS Whitehurst off Okinawa when attacked and struck by a kamikaze. The Val crashed into the forward superstructure and destroyed the bridge. 42 of the crew perished in the resulting fire.

It amazes me that anyone would willingly get on a WWII era destroyer or destroyer escort. They were tiny compared to modern day vessels.

I worked with both of them during the summers when I was a teenager. They had their issues: Leon would not go into any small, cramped area of the plant we worked in. Sometimes he would talk me through the work to be done while he stood outside the compartment and I was inside. Don worked in the furnace area and only fairly recently did I realize why he broke out in a sweat long before we walked into the kiln area.

134 I happened to catch part of the episode of the series that Fox News has been doing on the American Civil War that deals with the final surrender of General Lee to General Grant at Appomattox Courthouse. The thing that struck me was that President Lincoln, Lee and Grant wanted the South to be restored back to the Union with as little extra turmoil as possible -- thus not charging Confederate officers with treason, etc. Contrast that to modern Democrats screeching about "Confederate traitors" 150 years later.

149 One reason the battle of Attu is not talked about might be because it was followed by the disastrous battle of Kiska, the next (and last) island in the Aleutian chain. American planners expected another hard battle for Kiska, and launched a similar amphibious operation, in poor weather and thick fog, joined by some Canadian forces. In the bad weather, the Canadian and American forces mistook each other for Japanese troops and fired on each other - and a Destroyer struck a mine which had been left floating in the Harbor. All told, there were 313 casualties recorded, including over 100 dead.

But none of them were Japanese, as they had all evacuated 2 weeks earlier. Kiska was completely deserted at the time of the attack.

190 Not sure that Farrakhan's speech can be categorized as pro-Trump. It's mostly his mumbo-jumbo.

But, he is making the point that Dems are blindly defending the Justice Department just because Trump is criticizing it, and they have not been a favorite of African Americans.

So not so much pro-Trump as on the horns of dilemma, which is where Trump likes his enemies.

I see incorrect displays of flags a lot at stores, libraries, etc. The main error is hanging it with the blue field in the wrong place for display. I will usually inform someone but will be kind about it. These days it is half a win just to see people to try to respect the flag. And not all these rules are easy if you were never taught them.

Most of the time it is obvious, such as a flag on a window, door or against a wall. Having a Professional Drive to Your Home and Clean Your Guns Is More Practical Than You Might Think

Review: High Caliber Weapons Detailing is like a food truck but for guns

When I first heard about the concept of having somebody come to my home to clean my guns, I thought, "Well, that's a nice idea for rich folks with more guns than time." But when High Caliber Weapons Detailing showed up to my apartment, I realized there's a lot more to it than that.

I'm not necessarily a man who hates cleaning his guns. I absolutely love the smell of Hoppe's 9. My BoreSnakes and Rem Cloth keep my guns in good shape with a nice sheen between deep cleans.

Like any honest gun owner, however, I can admit that I don't do a deep clean of all my guns as often as I would like. If I'm being completely honest, I've never stiped my Ruger 10/22 or my Remington 870 Express to do a deep clean. And, like most gun owners, I've had my guns get dirty enough to affect their function...

241 AFP - Ivanka Trump is facing an online backlash for tweeting what one critic called a "tone deaf" photo of herself cuddling her son as outrage grows over a federal government policy to separate the children of undocumented migrants from their parents. Critics were quick to point to a "zero tolerance" policy announced earlier this month by Attorney General Jeff Sessions that authorizes border security agents to take away the children of people who enter the United States unlawfully.

If the illegals want to be with their kids they can always go back from whence they came. I'm sure the critics are a hand full of loons who would find fault with a mother showing affection for her child

Wasn't the very first slave owner in the American colonies a black man in New England. It was a logical progression of indentured servitude. If you could have an indentured servant for a fixed period (usually 7 years), why couldn't you have such a servant forever?

Most modern Americans don't have a deep enough understanding of history (purposely so due to the Lefties infesting the formal educational system) to grasp that 17th - 18th people had different concepts of valuation of labor.

Before the Industrial Revolution, you needed lots of physical labor to get stuff done. If you could afford it, you had servants. If you were poor, YOU were the servant. People indentured themselves in exchange for transportation to the American colonies. That first slave owner just decided to make the relationship permanent and the court agreed with his reasoning.

255 There was only one large plantation that had hundreds of slaves. Most farms that had slaves only had 1 or 2 slaves. Slaves were expensive and small farms could not afford them. In fact few farms even owned any slaves. In 1861 the average price of a slave in VA was $2,000 in gold.

I've been shooting for decades and never had a malfunction due to a firearm being dirty due to propellant residue. A field strip and cleaning the visible gunk does the trick. The modern teflon-based lubricants are great for the moving parts except for pistol slides (I use a small dab of white lithium grease for that).

264 222 @176. So, how many Jews served in the Lincoln cabinet? I mean as long as we are counting. "

"Judah P. Benjamin - Confederate Attorney General, Secretary of State, and Secretary of War."

Those two references bring up one of the interesting little bits of trivia about that war - the most notable Jewish member of Lincoln's cabinet was Salmon P. Chase, who was responsible for figuring out and financing all of the Federal Governments finances during the war. He went on to found Chase Bank, which today again uses its original name, after using Chase Manhattan for quite a long time.

The man who arranged the financing for the Confederacy was the above named Judah P. Benjamin. JPB did own a Louisiana sugar plantation, but he had purchased it mainly because he was hoping for a place his wife would be happy at. (he had a famously unhappy marriage) There were slaves at the plantation, as there were at all such plantations, but he had a reputation (while he owned it) of being a very humane manager.

JPB was primarily disliked by the Northerners because, as a Senator from Louisiana before the war, he made several long and eloquent speeches defending the institution of slavery in the US Senate.

    ???? What state?

The sugar plantations of South Louisiana were operations that required scale to be profitable, and would generally have between 100 - 200 slaves working them. There were dozens of such plantations alongside either side of the Mississippi between Baton Rough and N.O. This is also the location of many of the great remaining Plantation homes, although often these plantations would be owned by wealthy financiers and speculators who lived in N.O., Atlanta, and even New York.

    -
Slavery was omnipresent and I could argue that it was a necessary step in the creation of civilization since there was no economic system that allowed for employment. That's not to excuse the slavery in Ancient Rome let alone the prewar American south. By then economic systems were in place to buy labor.

I'm not aware that Hebrews were prohibited from owning Hebrew slaves. On the contrary, the Bible talks of converting one's slaves when one converts. The Bible is big on treating your slaves fairly.

299 Levin's comments - once again - called to my mind a comment by Orwell. Here's the address:

    http://telelib.com/authors/O/OrwellGeorge/essay/tribune/AsIPlease19450112.html

Actually, the two final sections are apt. And Orwell got the flaw with Levin's argument. It was NEVER in the cards that the press, in itself, was a defender of anything good, or a purveyor of truth. It is only when there are very many news organs that you have a hope of getting the truth.

This is one of the few issues I'm hopeful about. What we have today is nothing like the enemy's near-monopoly we saw in 1964. That is why there is so much yap about suppressing disapproved speech (as in the Brits' sex-grooming trial.) But I don't see them as winning. I'm not even convinced they'll win in the UK, where the laws are different. That's not where their main offensives are likely to win. THAT will happen only when they succeed elsewhere, e.g., by de facto (but not de jure) abolishing effective political opposition parties. Or by social, or employment based, as opposed to outright legal censorship.

    Mr. JJ Sefton,

I am forever grateful to your uncle who remains forever 28 but who was killed in action in Spain in 1944.
And I likewise give great thanks for the 11nth Armored Division who gave their lives to liberate your family and presumably the families of others. I grieve for those lost at Mauthausen and elsewhere. I give thanks to God that the heinous Holocaust finally came to an end and that there were at least some survivors to tell their story.

Both of my grandfathers miraculously survived the nightmare of World War II. I got to extensively interview one of them. And I will be forever grateful to have known them both. I wish I had known each of them better. One I could have. (-The one I took some time to interview.) The other I was only a little boy (9) when he died of cancer.

I had to look up several of the historical battles you cited in order to have complete context of your post. You make a very good point regarding how many Americans will bother becoming informed about the most crucial points in history.
But I would say: rest assured. Some of us will take the time to learn and thereby come to know.

Anyway, Mr. Sefton, thanks so much for your heartfelt Memorial Day post that touched me deeply.
I was especially moved by the unfathomably reverent Last Post.

    - Thank you.

    JJ,

One other thing. Unless I am remembering incorrectly: the Grandfather I got to interview extensively fought in Italy. But I don't remember if he ever fought in Spain.

He received the Purple Heart twice.
(There was even a write-up in our local newspaper regarding his first Purple Heart which my Mom says she still has an original clipping of.)

I might say more, Mr. J after carefully reading and linking to your post to fully understand it.

But the best anyone could ever say is: Thanks.
