25 Baby Sister Update - Lagniappe

One of Joyce's many dear friends wrote this, and at FenelonSpoke's suggestion, I'd like to share it with the horde:

Joycee
November 18, 1963 – May 16, 2018

You came to visit me at Sid’s before I moved to Utah in the middle of May 2002. You were moving to Minnesota with [Hubby] and I was moving to Utah and getting married to Ron. So, you drove out to Sid’s (Sid Griffith Equestrian Center) specifically to see me at our boarding stable, our second home, where you boarded Rudy and I boarded Katie. There you were (as usual) this bright ray of happiness walking into the barn. “Gailie!” you called out! “Joycee!” I answered back. My stick-skinny friend with a “beach ball” in the front of her, you were about five or six months pregnant with [Daughter] and so so happy about it. You were wearing a short white sundress with polka-dots. Pregnancy looked so good on you. Always straight-forward and genuine when you spoke, you said to me a few months earlier at the beginning of your pregnancy “this is the best part of being pregnant. Your boobs are big but you’re still skinny!” [Daughter] was about to be one lucky little girl, being born to a Mom who owned a horse!

I met you in 1992 or 3 at Country Squire boarding stable in Hilliard, Ohio. I just always remember being your friend and honestly can’t pinpoint when it was that I officially met you. But we were always together at the barn and I was always so glad to see you. You, me and Terry hung out together. And although we were both married to good men then, we helped each other figure out we needed different life partners. We told each other everything, and I mean everything. And later after your divorce, you met [Hubby]. He was not your average man. Handsome, genuine and educated, he was just as funny and lighthearted as you. You were perfect together.

You had a gift for attracting good people to you. Throughout our lives we’ve all had friendships that ended over (honestly, considering what is really important in life) nothing. But you Joycee couldn’t have held a grudge against someone if they paid you. That’s what was so special about you. I could always count on you to be there. Always. You listened. “Good time or bad?” you would ask when you called me. “Good for three minutes,” I might say or “Really good! What’s up?” For this reason, I always answered the phone when you called because if I really couldn’t talk, you never got offended. Sometimes in the middle of a conversation you would ask “am I talking too much?” after sharing a story. “No Joycee, you’re fine!” I would tell you, always touched by your considerateness.

I’m not sure when I started calling you Joycee, rather than Joyce. It was pretty much right from the beginning. You were just such a Joycee to me. I have so many fun memories because of you. When I got my divorce and needed a place to live, you introduced me to Tish and we instantly hit it off. I spent the next three and half years living with one of the best roommates I ever had thanks to you. I lived with Terry, too, for a few months who really helped me out of a bind. I even had a couple of blind dates with guys because of you back in the mid 90’s. Jack and Kyle. Deciding they were better for someone else than you, you would send your initial blind dates to other girlfriends, if you thought they were more compatible for them. That’s what was no endearing about you. You were always reaching out and thinking of others no matter what.

And no matter how much time might have gone by between us talking, the second I heard your voice on the other end of the phone it was as though we were right back at Sid’s or Country Squire picking up where we left off - going for a ride with Rudy, Missy or Katie or “gossiping” about something. You called me when you had to put Rudy down about five or six years ago. You needed someone to tell you it was okay. That you had made the right decision. In that conversation, it was finally my time to validate and lift you up, rather than the usual other-way-around. Be sure Rudy certainly got the memo that you were coming to see him. Sooner than he expected, mind you. But I can only imagine how much he eagerly awaited your reunion at the Gate of Heaven. Tacked up and ready to go!

I’m finding it hard to accept that my perky, funny friend isn’t here for me to turn to. You never judged. You never turned your back. You never weren’t there. You never stopped being that reliable, positive light-filled person I need. Still. It’s not fair. I cried my eyes out the second I found out you were ill. I was sitting in the grocery store parking lot at Smith’s, about to go in, when I got the news. I walked into the store trying to hold it together. In the middle of the baking aisle, I couldn’t any longer and started sobbing. Andre, a big friendly black guy who works the seafood counter, saw me and came out. “Miss? You are you okay?” he asked me. “I turned around, cried on his shoulder and told him what was happening. He told me “you’ve got to think positive and be strong for her!” So, I said “okay” and stopped crying. For then.

I prayed for you each and every Sunday in church. I rejoiced at your Facebook videos walking and talking and said “oh yes!” to myself each time I watched one. I thought you were going to beat this. It’s not fair. Especially to [Daughter and Hubby]. I can only imagine the heartache they have gone through, showing a brave smile through it all. To the rest of your friends in the world who were lucky enough to know you, we realize why there’s now a hole in our hearts. Answers aren’t clear but maybe someday we will understand why you had to leave us. Maybe [Hubby] with his brilliant doctor mind could help find a cure for brain tumors. Who knows? But there has to be a silver lining.

I know I would not be the considerate person (to the extent that I am) without your example and “coaching.” Thank you thank you Joycee. How can I have a hole in my heart for very long when memories of you refill it?

'And you can’t jump the track we’re like cars on a cable,

And life’s like an hour glass glued to the table,

No one can find the rewind button now,

So cradle your head in your hands.

And breathe. Just breathe. Oh breathe. Just breathe.
'

88 Milky Glutes' screed is hilarious. Especially this paragraph:

In economic policy, Obama's slow winnowing of the deficit even in times of sluggish growth has been completely reversed. We too easily forget that the biggest accomplishment of Trump's term in office so far - a massive increase in debt in a time of robust economic growth - is the inverse of Obama's studied sense of fiscal responsibility.

Obama, of course, passed a massive budget increase back in 2009, and then never passed another budget again. Every budget he submitted was voted down almost unanimously by both Republicans and Democrats.

180 Travesty
*IF* the details as recounted in this story are true, and I know nothing beyond what's printed here, then this seems to me like a failure of the court system.

++++

I disagree. First, what the guy did.

In 1996, he was found guilty of seven charges related to the distribution of 216 grams of crack cocaine. There were also weapons charges because Charles, a felon, had obtained two guns under an assumed name.

At trial, prosecution pointed to his criminal record. They labeled him a "career offender."

So Obama comes along, with his pen and phone, and changes the sentencing guidelines. But, unless President Doofus wanted to use his pardon power, he doesn't get to just change everyone's previously adjudicated sentences to whatever he thinks they should be. The guy had his trial, the judge handed down the sentence in accordance with the law, and the guy goes to prison to do his time.

Now, as someone who thinks that most vice laws are bullshit, I would be happy to see most drug crimes wiped off the books and an end to the war on drugs. But, until Congress comes around to my way of thinking, people will continue to get these draconian sentences.

The failure in this case is not in our judicial system; the fault lies in the legislative branch.

267 Mikey, cool.

One summer, I think it was 1980, my parents signed me up to 'volunteer' at Lakewood's big municipal library, Iacoboni Library. (It's been open since 1972 and to this day no one knows how to pronounce that name; Angelo Iacoboni was Lakewood's first mayor in 1954.)

Anyway, the librarians never worked me too hard and I had a halfway decent time. To this day when I walk in there (usually to donate my last couple orphaned DVDs I don't need/want anymore), the musty old-book smell reminds me of then.

Posted by: Prof. Miklos non-terpsichorean at May 25, 2018 10:51 PM (zCyNd)

We had a terpsichorean when I was a kid, we moved it around but mostly when it wasn't being used in the main hall, it was kept in the front turret of the Schloss-von-Kindltot, where the arrow slits looked over the main road where the ditch had been filled in by some industrious soul to grow beets during the late disruptions at the beginning of the last century.

It worked well, I think it was one of the ones made by that Bohemian family of luthiers who specialized mostly in cimbaloms and hammer dulcimers for the dinner theater trade, and it was probably a custom build for a special client, it had all the bells and whistles. Well, not whistles. It did have taps and the thing that made the squawk.

The downside was when the weather was thundery, you would be clacking along pretending to be Captain Nemo or the Phantom playing Bach fugues or langourous Scarlatti pieces and the E below E would come undone and hand you a clinker. Then you had to get the tuner out from town and sobered up long enough to fix it.

Tragedy, really, and we never understood the inscriptions on it, works of art in inlay that they were. They were in some odd dialect and the people we could find that spoke it were totally illiterate.

So much of the good things in the past are being lost, but not that Terpsichorean. That one we gave to the Helping Hands for Cats thrift store.

Working in the library? When I was in junior high I would have thought I died and went to heaven!
But out at the camp - living out there, with a large group of late teens to mid-20 year old workers, there was a heck of a lot of nonsense going on, and goldbricking. But thinking back, there was also a lot of real hard, physical labor, and I do not think, now, that I could do that. Lifting a 55 gal. drum half full of garbage and half full of water and emptying that into the back of a packer? I don't not think I could budge one of those today.

I keep telling my black friends over and over that if they start accepting the reality that the government is corrupt because of its corrupt officials and not because of its whiteness that they'll find a sympathetic ear among conservatives.

It's not whites versus blacks, it's corrupt government officials versus its own people.

One of my dad's neighbors up north (now passed away - did not know this story then) was on a B-24 at Ploesti. He told dad they came in low like that then climbed to drop bombs and that was when they were hit. He got out and somewhere between the hit on the plane and hitting the ground he broke a leg. Ended up in a POW camp and he never let on that he (a good Michigan farm boy from the thumb) could speak and understand German fluently. So he would pick the guards' gossip and bring it back in, give everyone a head's up on what to expect.

I had the same feeling - I remember watching it and liking it when it was originally broadcast, and thinking "wow that Chuck is just a crazy and funny guy". and then years later I saw some clips and realized "damn that guy is zonked out of his gourd".

I remember some of the tales of Monday night football when Don Meredith was on it, with Howard Cosell and I think Fran Tarkenton. They said Don always drank heavily through each game, and there was one game where they announced that Don had some medical condition and had to leave the broadcast to get some emergency treatment. Years later they admitted that was the night when Don drank so much that he just passed out so cold that no one could even wake him, and all they could do was drag him to some cot somewhere.

The stage presence I was most impressed with was Fry. He seemed to have a desire to reach people and exchange ideas.

I agree the two sides mostly talked past each other, the lefties really not there to have a discussion.

446 If I was ever tempted to get one of those Alexa type devices, and I wasn't, that story would kill the impulse. I'm dismayed by how many people see no problem handing over their privacy and control to these automated gremlins. Electric or natural gas use that is monitored AND CONTROLLED by the utility. Of course it's for the customer's convenience. (Yeah, right.) Refrigerators that keep track of supplies and order more automatically for delivery. Complete imbeciles that give delivery services access to their home. Hell, I know some folks who never carry cash or credit cards, relying totally on some smart phone app or even an implant for any payments. Apparently carrying a wallet is inconvenient and might spoil the look of their haberdashery.

Have these cretins no concept of privacy and personal responsibility for the sake of 'convenience'? Does it ever occur to them that a simple power outage can leave them helpless? Do they care that they spew personal (and private) matters all over social media in ways that make them vulnerable to all sorts of attack and reprisals?

There are so many aspects to the current culture that I don't understand or care to. But they can stay the hell out of my life.

To paraphrase Ben Franklin: Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little convenience deserve neither liberty nor convenience.

523 Miklos, LOL.

I think you're thinking of Peter Lorre. Chuck Lorre is alive, well, and a near billionaire from all his (IMHO mostly shitty) sitcoms he's sold to CBS.

He started off well as a writer for Roseanne in the 1980s, Grace Under Fire, and Cybill, He was fired from all three shows btw, due to clashes he had with the female stars of all three.

Then he caught a tiger by the tail with Dharma & Greg (a halfway decent show, not great but not horrible from what I recall), then produced Two and a Half Men, and now America can't get rid of this guy.

I've shared before: the only thing he's done since Cybill that I've ever enjoyed is his current sitcom about recovering alcoholics, "Mom," starring Allison Janney and Anna Faris. I would *swear* there's some conservatives on the writing staff of that show. But like all sitcoms, it's already showing signs of wear, tear and writer fatigue and keeps recycling its own set of tropes over and over and over again. Sigh.

I got nothin' then. If the BIOS won't see the controller, it sounds like the logic board is shot. The rest of it could still be good, which is kind of rare. Usually the mechanical parts go first, long before the ICs. Actually, that's pretty easy to fix, overcoming static friction in a rotating disc is left to the reader as an exercise.

If you got all the data off of it then you might as well go ahead and reformat the drive - if you have a free drive handy I would image the drive or squash it onto the new drive and then reformat the thing and repartition it. The BIOS might not be seeing it because of some problem with the partition table or because it doesn't recognize the partition type ... but I don't know.

As long as you got your data off of it you really don't have to worry and can screw around with it all you want. If Linux reads it then the drive is okay and fully functional.

Deep down she still can't get her head around the fact that you are no longer 13 and likely to get yourself into serious trouble, but that will either come or won't.

On the bright side you are no longer communicating solely by screaming at each other down the hallway, so things do get better, right?

Thing is, I didn't get all my data off it. I have some work-related folders, and that is good, but all my mp3's are gone, and a lot of my more recent pictures, too. And documents from "my documents". I had copied most of that to this new drive, with a clean Win7 install on it, and then fucking Windoze Update overwrote all of it.

So I need to get into the dead drive again at least once. And last time (this morning) I tried viewing it via Mint, it was not there. So, I'd say it is intermittent. Might be a boot sector virus?

Posted by: Cicero (@cicero) at May 26, 2018 12:34 AM (CPfoe)

What would Kafka and Hegel have to say to each other? Kafka was haunted by a fear of an inflexible law and seemed to satirize it, so I assume he hated it (ex. In the Penal Colony). Hegel would be more relativistic. Would he have been able to calm Kafka down? Interesting to be a fly on the wall if these two weirdos met.

Posted by: redc1c4 at May 26, 2018 01:04 AM (kb/by)

My guess would be the contacts in the pressure switch are slightly welded together, and don't release when the diaphragm linkage exerts a force on them. My water system pump does that sometimes, too. It's a very similar type of switch. I whack it with a wooden stick, and it shuts off.

But you could take the cover off the switch, and dress the contacts with an ignition point file, or a doubled-over scrap of abrasive cloth.

646 Buzzion it's a fairly long story unsuited to the comments and also shouting into the wind in some ways, but Dubya was nothing like Clinton or Obama on North Korea. He actually launched a program (Proliferation Security Initiative) that was global but mostly focused on the Norks (well, it's also unfashionable to note, the PSI's "target" list shrunk because we took out the Iraqi one, which led directly to the surrender of the Libyan one, and some other less well known surrenders thanks to cracking the Khan network, also a result of Iraq).

It was so effective (mostly targeted their finances) that they were screaming and begging like Navajos (old Woody Allen reference), and then ....... poof. Gone. Over. No explanation. No inter-agency review. Just an edict from the WH/NSC.

Explanation is almost certainly - "China" - but it remains a mystery. Top State guy responsible (asst. sec. level) resigned over it, but being classy and old school, just didn't talk (as opposed to infesting the MSM TV networks, and getting an appointment at the JFK School or Brookings).

If you hear a "click" sound every second or two the drive is mechanically bad, that's the arm swinging back and forth. If the read head isn't contacting the disk you may be able to get some data off with the freezer trick. I've even seen suggestions to take a hammer and give the drive a whack, but I've only ever done that when nothing else worked.
If there's anything truly irreplaceable you can try a recovery specialist. They'll dismantle the drive and mount the platter and hopefully get the data off if the platter wasn't too scuzzed up by the read head sliding back and forth.

No money, but i had a quart bottle of windshield washer anti-freeze concentrate, which was basically straight methanol. Into the tank it went. And the car started, and made it 5 miles to home, too. had to drive with the choke pulled nearly all the way out, but run, it did. No money, but i had a quart bottle of windshield washer anti-freeze concentrate, which was basically straight methanol. Into the tank it went. 715 Palomat knot is the easiest, and a good one.

For the buzz bomb, once you have everything else on the line, double the end so you have a 5 or 6 inch loop. Gives you plenty to work with since just learning.

Pass enough line through the hook eye to tie an overhand (that first thing you do when tying your shoes) but don't cinch it down yet.

Now put the entire hook through the loop at the end, bring the loop in front of the hook, wet the line and pull on the end of line and line going to rod at the same time to cinch it down.

Whew.
