20180526 chess pic.jpgSo Who Are These Famous, Old-Time Chess Players?
(No fair running a Google or Bing search on this image!)

Pic Note:

I see that the artist got the board wrong. Why does everyone make that mistake?

I wanted to cut out everything in this photo except the girl, but I just couldn't get it to look right. Plus, that ginger beard is completely awesome, so I had to leave the husband in. And the kid is cute, too, so yeah, he stays. The larger version looks way better, which you can see if you click on the pic.

Solutions Update

Easier Problem - White To Play

20180526 - Problem 1.jpg
r1bk3r/ppp2ppp/2p5/8/4n3/8/PPPB2PP/2KR1B2 w - - 0 1

1. Bg5+!

No, not 1. Bb4+ Ke8 and the win has slipped away. The bishop is poorly posted on the b4 square.

1...Ke8
2. Rd8#

Boom.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180526 - Problem 2.jpg
5N1K/1p6/8/6p1/8/8/8/2k5 w - - 0 1

I hope you call saw that White's only strategic goal is to see if he can force a draw. He can't win with just a knight. But perhaps he can capture one of the pawns and then trade his knight for the other.

1.Nh7 g4
2.Nf6 g3
3.Nh5 g2
4.Nf4 g1=Q
5.Ne2+ Kd2
6.Nxg1 Ke3

Phase 1 is now completed. Now for the other pawn:

7.Nh3 b5
8.Ng5 b4
9.Nf7!

This move doesn't look right, but it is the correct one. Wrong is 9.Ne6 b3 10.Nc5 b2 and White cannot stop the pawn.

9...b3
10.Nd6 Kd3

Not 10...b2? because of 11.Nc4+ and the knight fork secures the draw.

11.Nb5 b2
12.Na3 and White can forever shuffle his knight between the a3, b1, and c3 squares, keeping away from the Black king and either blocking the b1 queening square ot trading knight for queen if Black succeeds in pushing his pawn.

Black can try to stop the knight fork by underpromoting:

4...g1=N

But White can then bring his king into the game:

5.Kg7 b5
6.Nd5 Kc2
7.Kf6 Ne2
8.Ke5 Nc3
9.Nb4+ Kb3
10.Nc6 Ka4
11.Kd4 Nd1
12.Kc5 Nf2
13.Kd4 Ng4
14.Kd3 Nf6
15.Kd4 Nd7

Enroute to b8 to attempt to dislodge the knight.

16.Kc3

And Black can make no progress.

But let's say that Black sees the writing on the wall early on and thinks "screw this, I'm going to push the other pawn." Here is what will happen:

2...b5
3.Nxg4 b4
4.Kh7 Kd2
5.Ne5 b3
6.Nc4+ Kc3
7.Na3 Kb2
8.Nc4+ Kc2
9.Na3+ Kc3
10.Kg6 Kb4
11.Nb1 b2
12.Kg7 Kb3
13.Kh7 Kc2
14.Na3+

And Black is stuck.

Hope to see you all next week!

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

29 Problem 2.

First two moves should be:

1. Ne6 g4
2. Nd4 ...

Now pawn on b7 is stopped and pawn on g4 cannot move because of the fork on e2 so next move will be black K. If *not* g4 then Nxg5 and white gets his N to c3 in 2 moves.

I'm going to have to work for a bit now ...

Posted by: Skip at May 26, 2018 05:14 PM (aC6Sd)

Right. Generally, you're given 'x' amount of time to make 'y' number of moves. When it's your move, your clock is running. When you complete your move, you push the button on your side of the clock which stops your clock and starts you're opponent's clock.

Sometime, the entire game must be finished in 'y' minutes. That's the other major time control that gets used.

Hey! Here's a fashion tip for all the Ladies!

Buy Ivanka Trump's clothing line.

Lately, the exquisite and fashionable Mrs naturalfake had been wearing some new and just great looking blouses and dresses and so forth.

It turns out that they're all from Ivanka Trump's line, and all 70% off or more.

She was laughing about it telling me that there must be some people politically refusing to buy her line, but that her clothes are great. Excellent fabrics, great tailoring, and stylish.

She said every time she sees them on sale she buys because the price is fabuloso.

And, of course, it's nice to support Trump indirectly.

Anyway, if it's happening around here. It's probably happening where you live.

Give them a try.

You can be both classy and thrifty.

and give a surreptitious poke in the eye to the Dims and NeverTrumpers.

Such a bargain.

There is something weird in that pic anyway. If you look in between the couple, just above the wooden rail, there is a flesh colored something extending between them. Is it the gal's arm? If so, it should be sleeved. Plus, it is perfectly straight. The only way I can make it out to be her arm is if she has her elbow in his ribs, with her hand behind her own back. But, still should have a sleeve on that arm, plus why would she pose with her elbow in his ribs? The arm should go the other way, with her hand on him.

97 29 Problem 2.

103 Marshall and Capablanca played a match in 1909. So maybe the next challenge is to figure out which game is depicted in the drawing. But the artist couldn't even get the board right, so he may have just scattered the pieces randomly for all we know.

What's "good"? You can play vs. the computer with the chess.com site or the app, and the gnuchess front-end at /Applications/Chess.app will be better than I am for the foreseeable future. Yes. Knight to D7 to prevent promotion, King goes after the near pawn, moves to defend Knight, muck about until you can take the 2nd pawn.

Posted by: Duncanthrax at May 26, 2018 06:39 PM (DMUuz)

++++

You're reading the board backwards. Black is moving in the other direction. Nd7 won't prevent promotion, as that pawn will make it's first move to b5. Meanwhile, the pawn on the other side is too far away to catch with the king. As soon as white moves his king in that pawn's direction, he's off to the races. The king can only chase it, 2 squares behind, and watch it make queen.

Well, the problem with that idea is that there doesn't seem to be anything worth mining on the moon. When the proto-earth and moon split up (however that played out, most likely a collision between 2 bodies, one smaller than the current earth, the other probably Mars sized) Earth was the lucky one and ended up with all of the metals and heavier elements, as the cores of both proto-planets merged to create the new Earth's massive nickel-iron core.

The moon has no metal core like earths, which is why it is so thoroughly dead. It's mostly just silicates - a big dead rock of little value, except as a platform.

Polliwogette and I are on most weekends and a few times on weekday evenings. Since the new expansion is coming out in August, we have high level characters that can help get you leveled up (plus we have lower leveled toons we are playing as well.)

Alliance Guild is "Val U Rite Pudding" on Rexxar.
Horde Guild is "ValU Rite Pudding" on Hellscream. (note the space & lack of same).

Most active on Hellscream, but we have many characters in different levels on both servers.

A dog story I would never put in the pet thread - an old buddy of mine was driving late at night in a company truck, down near the King Ranch in Texas. He saw this rather large dog laying in the road, it clearly had been hit, he said to himself "that's very sad, it's a narrow two lane road without shoulders, I'll just straddle it so as not to make it messier. "

But just as he got there, the poor dog, not quite dead yet, lifted up its head ans looked at him just before he went over it. He heard a "thump" and it made him kind of sick, but he told himself at least he had put it out of its misery, since it was already badly hurt. Another 30 minutes and he noticed a burning smell from the engine compartment, so he pulled into a small town gas station to get some gas, worried something had been damaged. He popped the hood - and their, right next to the engine mount and the stuck between the engine and the car body, was the dog's head. Not the dog, just it's head, staring at him.

What he did next was the real kicker. He acted nonchalant, walked up to the attendant, paid for his gas, and asked "hey you got a broom?" The attendant loaned him one, and he just went out and used the pole to knock the dog's head out of it's position, onto the concrete below. Then he closed the hood, again without saying anything, took the broom back, and just got in his truck and drove off.

For years everyone who's heard him tell the tale has wondered what the hell the next person to pull into that gas station thought. All my buddy would say was "I don't know, I just know I ain't ever goin' back there."

244 Yes. I don't recall the exact quote or who said it, but "A Dark Age isn't when we forget how to do things. It's when people no longer believe it was ever possible to do those things."

Sounds cute but I'm going to have to vote against this sentiment. In the real Dark Ages, Europeans saw the ruins of great works all around them. They knew that doing all these things was possible. They couldn't do them but they knew that people not long before, in that exact place, had done them.

But they thought it was aliens.

246 No, my solution has a variation that takes care of the underpromotion line

++++

Ah, didn't read far enough to get to that. But, my app takes a different route on that one too. Not sure if it is a winner, but I'm not seeing the solution.

Your line:
8.Ke5 Nc3
9.Nb4+ Kb3

My app:
8.Ke5 Kb3

With that move, the check no longer works.

My app:
8.Ke5 Kb3
With that move, the check no longer works.

Can your app win as Black from that position? Because the position is similar to mine, i.e. the White knight is covering b4 and will simply capture the pawn and secure the draw if it moves there. I don't see a clear line for Black to dislodge the knight from d5. The White king can always chase the Black knight away from attacking. So it's a draw. Unless your app can come up with a line.

252 I'll get back to it to check. I like to figure things out first and then try what I think is a solution against the app. I know if I forgot something, it will get me. When I don't figure it out, then it's your solution I try against the app. Everything I tries against it from the point it deviated from your solution failed, but I haven't tried to turn it around and see how it deals with its own line. I put it away for now, but I'll get back to it later.

254 On Problem #2, why not just underpromote g1=N and use material to advance b7?

255 I guess Richard Reti based only on my sense of the attitude he would present at the chess board as exemplified by the famous commentary

1. e4 ...

White's game is on its last legs.
