Weekend Gun Thread

daily-man-up-20151013-24.jpg

An interesting read. Perhaps the loony-tunes Congressional critters who want to confiscate "assault" weapons ought to read.

Introductory Proviso: The following essay on possible gun confiscation is a purely conjectural gedankenexperiment about the future that extrapolates from recent history and current trends. Nothing herein is seditious (per 18 U.S. Code § 2384), nor a call to arms, nor a threat to our government or to any individual, agency, or group.

THE COLLECTIVIST DREAM
The current mass media-driven “debate” on firearms (actually more like paternalistic lecturing or chiding) seems to be leading toward greater restrictions by Congress. The collectivist gun grabbers have the dream of ignoring the Second Amendment and somehow magically removing all detachable magazine semi-auto rifles from civilian hands. But it is just that: a dream. If they think that they can disarm us, then they are thoroughly deluded. I’ll explain why, with some simple mathematics.

The United States has the world’s first or second most heavily-armed populace, per capita. (It’s possibly second only to Yemen.) The number of FBI firearms background checks for transfers by Federally-licensed dealers from November 1998 to April 30, 2018 totaled 287,807,015. That isn’t all new guns. It of course includes many second-hand sales that cycled back through FFL holders. But it is still a staggering number. And it does not include any private party (“not through a dealer” sales of used guns. That is thankfully legal in most states. Nor does it include guns that are legally made at home. (Typically made with 80% complete receivers.) Those home “builds” are becoming quite popular. Their ownership is mostly opaque to any would-be tyrants who might covet seizing them.

How were you introduced into the world of guns? Was your family responsible? Did you decide on your own you wanted to own a firearm? How did you learn safety, did you go to a Hunter's Safety Education class? Did you attend a CCW class? Or did the relative show you everything?

The following was submitted to us by OurCountryIsScrewed:

I’m a big fan of the “Bring one, Teach one” concept. Bring someone you know to the range, teach them safety, safety, safety. Then instruct them on the use of a firearm ultimately leading them to fire said firearm. This was basically how I was introduced to this hobby/sport, so why not continue in that tradition and pay it forward. Educating people, especially those not familiar with, or even afraid of, firearms will hopefully pay dividends.

Once the “BOTO” day is over, I always urge the person to take a firearms class. I went through the NRA Basic Pistol Class at a local range and was hooked. The instructors at the particular range I went to stretched the 8hr NRA BP class into more of a 16 hour class. More time was spent on revolvers vs. pistols, cleaning firearms (especially since we dirtied them), and most importantly SAFETY. There was also more time spent on the firing line. For me, the highlight of the class was the last day when the instructors brought in some of their firearms and allowed us students to talk them about their guns, ask how to use them and even shoot them. We had everything from a .25ACP to a .45ACP.

The follow-on class was the NRA Personal Protection in the Home. Once again, gun safety rules were reiterated, as they should be. This class offered more time on the firing line working on point shooting, Tueller Drill, and shooting around barricades. Last day we had a local LEO come in and discuss with us what would happen if someone was put into a self-defense situation where they shot the bad guy.

Looking at training offered at other ranges around me, I am seeing that the NRA classes are being replaced with Second Amendment Foundation’s Trading Division and the Fundamentals and Safety Training (F.A.S.T.) classes. I haven’t had any experience with the SAFTD classes, so any input/commentary would be appreciated -especially comparisons to the NRA training programs.

I would recommend checking out your local range’s training offerings. There may be more opportunities beyond these classes. Several ranges around NH offer some type of tactical/conceal carry training. These consist of monthly sessions led by a range officer or instructor. I’ve been to numerous ones and have tons. Barricade work, low-light shooting, various shooting drills including various LEO qualification drills, shooting with a flashlight, various shooting stances and positions using 2 hand and one hand (strong and weak side). 100-200 rounds of ammo lighter, I always walk away humbled by how much I still need to learn, but also with various things I need to practice on.

If your range offers some type of first aid training, I would highly recommend it. Accidents do happen and having the training and equipment available to respond to such an incident can literally save someone’s life.

What have been your experiences with any firearm training classes? Anybody out there a certified instructor? Range officer?

Tips on great ammo buys always appreciated. As well as any feedback. You can find me at ourcountryisscrewed at the gmail thingy.

10 Nobody introduced me to guns. I've always been interested.

In my later years, I started thinking about RKBA, and the Second Amendment.

Then, once I got my CCW, well, I thought it best I put a lot of thought into my weapon of choice and darn well be proficient at using it.

17 I got two Garands from the CMP a week ago. Sort-of disappointed. I was hoping to get at least one Springfield, but both are Harrington and Richardson receivers. Both have their original H&R barrels, but they have an assortment of Springfield, H&R, and IHC made bolts, op rods, etc. And the windage adjustment on one of them is flaky. Both are CMP "Service Grade" rifles, so I'm surprised the rear sight is not right. CMP installed new walnut stocks on both.

Oh well, they are Garands, and that's a good thing! Always wanted one, finally got two. Quite an example of mechanical and industrial engineering! Will be taking them to the range in a couple of weeks, after I fully tear them down and check for any problems.

-

Springfield = hens teeth

I've been to the Alabama location a few times and there are always guys there when the doors open to try and find one.

Interestingly, some Springfield stocks (maybe all, I'm no expert) have a slightly different curve where the fingers fall. I'm told you can lean down and look down the aisle and pick one out if there's one there, but you'd have a hard time seeing it if all the same choices are laid out side by side on a table.

Of course, even that stock will almost certainly have a mismatched receiver and barrel. Which is sort of nice in its own right. These are used guns, and a great memorial day rememberence. I might take mine out tomorrow for a few rounds.

52 Greetings:

Even though I grew up in the Bronx of the '50s and '60s, our family had a summer place about 60 miles north in Putnam County. It was a semi-rural area back then, morphing into a bedroom community. Most roads were paved but there were dirt ones too. There were still some farms and creeks and lakes and lots of woods.

The local lads were into time in the woods, fishing, hunting, camping, exploring, anything that precluded any adult intervention. Around reaching the double-digits age-wise, I separated my father from his war knife and started going the full Natty Bumppo. I progressed up the scale from BBs to pellets to other people's 22s pretty quickly.

I started to work on my father for a Remington 22 for my 12th birthday. My father insisted that I join a local gun club to learn the basics. My more city girl mother was having none of it. Finally, as my birthday neared, dinner discussion ensued. Mother insisted that that was no way to raise a child. My Father said, "I'm not raising a child; I'm raising a man."

No. Wood is a lot more sensitive to temperature and humidity, which affects accuracy. Wood is also not nearly as durable as polymers.

However, wood is still much prettier than plastic.

80 I was given a Red Ryder lever action BB gun when I was about seven. I learned to shoot pretty accurately with that little beauty. To my shame, I shot and killed a meadowlark that was singing its little heart out on top of a telephone pole, which taught me a lesson, that even BB guns can be deadly.

A little later my father obtained a Crossman CO2 .22 air pistol and I was given free rein with it. I successfully killed several rabbits with it, including one memorable shot on the run.

When I was about 13 I got a J.C.Higgins 20 ga. single shot shotgun for Christmas, and was into the real world of hunting. I bagged a large number of bunnies with that gun. I later graduated to a 12 ga. model 37 Ithaca, and then added a Browning OU with two sets of barrels. These guns were used to harvest many pheasants, a few deer with slugs, some ducks and a wild boar.

In my big game hunting phase I owned a Browning 30:06 and a Weatherby 7mm magnum, which I used for both whitetail and mule deer, pronghorns and elk.

Today in my advanced years I own only one gun, a 38 special Ruger five hole wheelgun which is my carry weapon.

Started buying my own when I was 22 or so - still have that 1911.

I'll bet I could break the glass in a door with my full-size Gerber multitool - but I would wrap my shirt around my hand first, if I didn't have gloves. A chair or fire extinguisher would probably do the trick, too.
Wired glass, all bets are off.

And yeah, waiting for a SIG 365 to come to the local gun shop, it sounds interesting. See if it's smaller than the 6906.

Thanks. I was thinking they were, and I seem to remember even halfway thinking about buying a reproduction at one time, but I couldn't justify the cost. I bet they'd be big fun, though.

I also think everyone should have at least one black powder pistol. Loads of fun and makes you really appreciate what the pre-cartidge guys had to go through. Imagine doing it under duress. Ugh.

Also a neat feeling when they fire compared to the explosiveness of cartridges. They push against the hand in a wonderful way.

Posted by: hogmartin at May 27, 2018 08:43 PM (fZuhk)

192 To echo what Moron Robbie said, everyone should have a BP pistol. They are fun and different and rather satisfying to shoot. The greater involvement in loading and accountrements, the added care in cleaning and maintaining, the connection to history, and the slower pace of loading makes each shot appreciated in a way that even single shot modern weapons can't match.

193 The pistol on the right may have been made to fire really big BBs, like .45 cal. BBs. They make those don't they? If not, there's an idea for someone to get stinking rich. BB refers to the size of shot, like shotgun shot. B is .17", BB is .18", BBB is .19", and so on. 000 is .36", so .45 BB is stretching the term a bit.

204 I think the way to predict how they will approach actual gun banning will be as they did for cigarettes.

A different mentality to the group targeted and they object and behavior being banned is already heavily regulated.

They will go after ammunition using local banning on a city by city basis. And also zoning (as in Cali) for ranges and Gun shops.

Then once they see that they have a docile target they will complete the effort by essentially banning the use anywhere at all.

The problem is as with cigarettes there's always some that don't see the danger and will comply with the regulations thinking that it's somehow fair.

Then when the final effective ban comes along there's no where to go.

Patience will be their key. Like slowly tightening a press eventually the object succumbs.

The real hazard isn't the left. It's those on the right that surrender for what ever reason.

The real betrayals over Parkland happened in Vermont and Florida both with GOP Governors and now they're stuck with laws that will be used against gun owners.

They see the numbers only and don't really regard the rights implications as long as an outright ban isn't in the works.

These seizures/holds by judges will also be over used. As with all things legal, LE will warp the usage and no one will be able to fight it.

All of them allow LE to initiate the seizures and we all know that LE never ever lies to a judge.

"The ceremony was simple, elegant and moving. Yhe President was personable and occasionally humorous; he seemed to greatly enjoy doing this. His scripted remarks referred to the MoH as 'the nation's highest military honor'; he made a point of changing it to "the nation's highest honor." I think he and the Master Chief must have really hit it off before the ceremony, because unlike other MoH ceremonies with participants nervous and sweating, both were clearly comfortable with each other throughout."

He indicated the First Lady was absent, but the motorcade through WDC was fun.

At least as of two years ago.

327 I need some advice on a reasonably priced red dot sight for my new Ruger 10/22. It was too good to pass up, and it came with a 3x9x40 scope that I really don't need.

I love the idea of a red dot, but it's just for plinking, so price is obviously a consideration.

----------

Bushnell has some good red/green dot sites in that price range.

329 ONT is up, and I should be out but not

TBH I kind of assumed that was universal.

And most transit buses have a rear exit, so you can get out of there quickly, and not have to contend with ignorant dumbfucks trying to board before all passengers alighting have done so.

332 I don't understand why this here is a topic of contention. Isn't buying a hot dog during the anthem not particularly respectful? Is that when people normally do it or something?
Posted by: hogmartin at May 27, 2018 09:39 PM (fZuhk)

Not particularly respectful? maybe...but the point is it is a child like reaction. If I can't have play, i am taking my ball home.

Posted by: Nevergiveup at May 27, 2018 09:54 PM (SjImc)

333 Come on, someone is supposed to say "You got to ride in the back of the bus? Luxury!"

Then I say, "I had to ride under the bus with my ass dragging on the gravel."

Then you say, "You had gravel?" and it goes on from there. What is wrong with you people.

Posted by: Ruthless at May 27, 2018 09:54 PM (md3fh)

334 Hogmartin, a rousing snort of approval on the Romeo5 from Sig. Had one on an AR before it went overboard. I really miss that one.

Posted by: Eromero at May 27, 2018 09:54 PM (zLDYs)

335 OK, ONT time means I better go make my supper. I am having some cold gruel, the usual. With a side of more cold gruel. Luxury!

The guy seems like a real ass. And I get your point, that is certainly what he was trying to do. Yet, he seems to have accidentally done something that respects the Anthem more, it should be copied across the league.

337 The SIG Sauer Romeo5 is on sale at opticsplanet.com
for a buck fifty.

Posted by: hogmartin at May 27, 2018 09:46 PM (fZuhk)

Hmmm....a little pricey, but the reviews are excellent.

2MOA sounds about right also.

Thanks for the advice!

Sadly, I cant find it on dvd or youtube.
