The not-so-great debate [KT]

Remember that long debate on political correctness featuring Jordan Peterson and three other people? It was linked in the sidebar not long ago. The actual debate starts at about 7:30 if you want to watch the whole thing. I don't think this was a debate packed with great ideas, but it provided some interesting insights into how the Left thinks of "debate". The topic of the debate was supposed to be "Political Correctness: Be It Resolved, What You Call Political Correctness, I Call Progress..."

I'm not sure that this was evident through the course of the debate. David Thompson and his commenters have some follow-up that includes two shorter clips. This post indicates that, to the debaters on the Left, the primary topic was "Be it resolved: Jordan Peterson is a Mean White Man."

I think the debate meandered quite a bit. And Michelle Goldberg started off the debate by excluding her least-favorite parts of political correctness. And by focusing on opposition to Jordan Peterson. I lost patience. So the comments here at AoSHQ and at the link above have been helpful. The stated topic of the debate did not specify White Privilege, but much of the debate seemed to be about White Privilege. Probably because that was the specialty of one of the lefty debaters.

Well, there was feminism, too. No wonder Michelle Goldberg hates bloggers and social media.

In the comments, Joan shares this short but telling clip illustrating the lofty standard of debate offered by Ms Goldberg, one of the New York Times' finest. Readers are invited to watch the clip and then join me in devising possible excuses. For instance,

"I, a professional journalist with a degree in journalism from Berkeley, didn't actually bother to watch the interview that I referred to repeatedly during a public debate and which I cited with great enthusiasm, and in which both the interviewer and interviewee make clear, pointedly and repeatedly - at least three times - that Peterson didn't say what I, a professional journalist and self-styled upholder of good manners, claimed that he said."

Of course the acid test of Ms Goldberg's integrity, such as it may be, is how she responds to the dozens of people who've tweeted her with proof of this, shall we say, error. Will there be a retraction, an admission of ineptness, an apology to Peterson?

One thing that struck me, both from the false quote and the debate in general, was the demonstration, once again, of how little the Left cares about clarity of language.

Lights of the Left on Video

Michelle Goldberg:

Michael Dyson, who seems to have forgotten that he is speaking in front of a Canadian audience:

As at AoSHQ, David Thompson's commenters have some interesting insights. Here are three that I liked:

10:00

Dyson also informs the audience that "white privilege doesn't act according to quantifiable segments," and that to ask for specifics, actual points that might be discussed and tested, is itself a sign of "white privilege," especially when such questions are asked with "lethal intensity."

Kafkatrap!

10:35:

How do you ask a question with "lethal intensity"?

Heh. I think the message being sent is something like, "If you ask me to be specific and substantiate my claims I will imply that your line of questioning encourages violence against minorities."

17:03:

"Slavery as permanent trump card, no matter how many generations have passed since it was abolished."

Well, okay then. If that's how they want to play it...

The Barbary pirates, sometimes called Barbary corsairs or Ottoman corsairs, were Ottoman pirates and privateers who operated from North Africa ... Their predation extended throughout the Mediterranean, south along West Africa's Atlantic seaboard and into the North Atlantic as far north as Iceland, but they primarily operated in the western Mediterranean. In addition to seizing merchant ships, they engaged in Razzias, raids on European coastal towns and villages, mainly in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, but also in the British Isles, the Netherlands and as far away as Iceland. The main purpose of their attacks was to capture Christian slaves for the Ottoman slave trade as well as the general Arab slavery market in North Africa and the Middle East.

It could be argued that it was the desire to destroy this practice at its root - the slave trade within Africa - which led ultimately to the end of the Atlantic trade. The fact that the Barbary pirates were finally subdued around the late 18th/early 19th Centuries, just as abolitionism began to gain traction in the British Empire, is surely too neat to be coincidental.

But that would spoil the narrative of European original sin. And this is the really important point: it's not simply that Britain saw the error of its ways, abolishing the slave trade out of some kind of guilty conscience (and in the end managed to convince America); the British Empire was the first civilization to recognise that slavery is wrong in the first place, not just for its own people, but in principle. That's our idea, and without it there would be no guilt, just as the Berbers, the Ottomans, the Arabs, and the West Africans felt no guilt in taking slaves for themselves.

Talk about cultural appropriation...

Did you manage to watch the entire debate? Parts of it? Anything stand out in your mind?

3 I said before, the phrase "300 years of slavery" probably means that slavery has not been abolished.

Dyson's grandfather knew Jim Crow I assume. His grandfather's grandfather knew a time when the klan helped elect US congressmen. And his grandfather's grandfather's grandfather knew slavery. He thinks he belongs in that group. And not the select group of people who sell books and appear on TV, like Jordan Peterson does.

32 I didn't watch the whole thing but if you look at comments on it, they are as far as I can tell 100% in support of Peterson and against the lefties. He (and to a lesser extent Frye) came across as informed, polite, on target, intelligent, and prepared. The others came off as idiotic, annoying, obnoxious, offensive, and ignorant, repeating stupid talking points and demonstrating a near-total inability to think rationally and usefully.

Even the leftists who commented lamented that they wished someone better than those two knuckleheads were there to support their side because they were so monumentally idiotic and worthless.

39 Watched the debate. Very poor choice of people to take the affirmative position. Neither of them really wanted to deal with the meat. Peterson and Fry were good, but failed to present what is going on across the country including violence and de-platforming of non-PC views. It was quite clear that Dyson felt intellectually inferior to Peterson. Dyson is clearly racist. He made a bizarre point that people weren't used to dealing with smart black men like him. Hmmmm. I deal with smarter black men than him every day. I call them my neighbors and coworkers. Dyson plays only one note and its flat--his experience as a black man trumps all. I was disappointed that Peterson did not say that because he bucked insane PC rules, he was threatened with the loss of employment, prison, and being branded a pariah. He gave a speech a few weeks ago where an arrested protester was found to have a garrote. Goldberg clearly lacked any kind of intellect to have the debate. Peterson kept hammering on a simple question; when has the left gone too far? But his framing of the debate required people understanding that PC was invented by the neo-Marxists to control debate. But the real problem was that neither Dyson or Goldberg could actually defend their position. Stephen Fry was excellent on many levels.

40 The slavery thing deeply confuses me. Slavery officially ended in the UK in 1833. In the US, it was abolished in 1865.

So when these idiots talk about slavery for 400 years, what the hell are they talking about? The Americas weren't even discovered by Europeans until 1498 (the islands in 1492 don't really count but even if they did, that's still not 400 years and there were no black slaves around then). The first slave on US soil was not until 1619. Where does this 400 years thing come from?

My guess is its from the Hebrews being enslaved in Egypt 400 years and just borrowing that number to apply to themselves by blacks in America. It sounds impressive, but its without merit. I mean, America abolished Slavery 89 years after the Declaration of Independence.

One mistake that us right-wingers tend to make about the commies is to think that they're dumb, ignorant or misinformed. I fall into that trap all the time. They know damned well what we are, what our arguments are, and what their own arguments are.

Clarity of language is no different.

They obfuscate the language not because they don't understand the arguments, but as a TACTIC. The willful ignorance of say, gun terminology, is a conscious decision in order to manipulate the audience. In that case, they've been quite open about their intent to blur the distinction between terms in order to achieve a rhetorical goal.

But he can't directly make an argument for open borders because it would make him sound like the shill for corporate globalism that he is.

63 I just get so tired of this so-called debate. There is no debate. We're dealing with religious zealots here. They don't want to hear what you have to say. They have a gospel they're preaching, and that gospel is all about you and what you did. To them.

I'm beginning to accept that there are people I like who belong to that religion. I like them when they're not preaching their gospel. I tolerate them (sometimes) when they are. What that gospel translates to in actual living, I'm more or less of the belief it doesn't. They have to say it, like a strong swig of beer or soda has to cause them to burp.

In other words, if the subject matter does not involve "what's wrong with the world," and not every subject matter must, these are tolerable people. When it does, you just have to listen to them burp up their "white men are to blame" nonsense for a while. Then when they stop, it's time to carry on as if nothing happened. Because really, nothing did.

64 "the coast is clear" (allegedly) arose from the need to check the ocean horizon for the Barbary pirates in their "swift boats", before proceeding down to the beach.

and when do I get my reparations from Germany, since my family escaped being used as cannon fodder in the mid 1800's. There is a letter from some relatives that didn't make it, pleading for even a little money to help them survive the hard times in Germany.

Trying to impose current (Western, welfare/bailout state, racial quota laws) norms into historical rhetoric from two centuries ago is a fool's errand. It's like asking why Columbus didn't just use his Google maps ap on his ipad to chart his course.

And to go back even further, to the time of Christ or the old testament, requires even more ability to realize mere survival was never a given, and being lorded over by corrupt powers was pretty normal. Sure the king might rape and murder on a whim, but if a family was lucky, at least he kept the mongrel hordes at bay. Life was cheap.

From some things I read by Vox Day (brought to my attention by some AoS commenter), Peterson is no academic on his now popular subject. I haven't read enough of Peterson to analyze, and am no academic myself. But the Vox Day commentary on him is interesting. 66 To paraphrase Elaine Benes: These leftists aren't debate-worthy.

Posted by: Dan Smoot's Apprentice at May 26, 2018 12:08 PM (H8QX8)

67 They know damned well what we are, what our arguments are, and what their own arguments are.

Not usually. There are leftists who do but for the most part, leftists are like any other group repeating what they've heard or read and agree with, without thinking about it. Most leftists have not really ever engaged any on the right, and aren't even aware there are other arguments. They're so steeped in the sewer of like-thinking people without any dissent that they are wholly unprepared to discuss or debate.

Further, they have never been trained to thing rationally and with any sort of system or rhetorical consistency. This is a skill you have to learn, but which is not taught because it is too "white" and frankly because it leads people to reject the continual contradictions and insanity of the left.

The reason this seems clever to you is because of two things:

1) they are so irrational and unable to think systematically and intelligently that they seem tricky and are frustrating
2) they are trained by the few people who do know better and thought this stuff through to use words incorrectly. This allows them to shape the debate by banning some terms and concepts and manipulating others to their benefit.

Its not that they know or understand. Its that they have been taught by people who did, even if the teaching is just culture.

Leftism is the worldview of the infantile and uncivilized, it fits what we wish to feel to be true, without all that unpleasant questioning, doubting, and thinking.

70 I watched the whole thing. My big takeaway was that Dyson is a complete charlatan.
He's used to spouting Big Words to undergrads and cannot hold his own against mature thinkers. And to see him lose control when Peterson challenged him was instructive: When the left loses a fair argument they start shouting...and eventually worse.

- he is utterly provincial.

72 Common knowledge here at AoSHQ but worth repeating in these troubled times:

"Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded - here and there, now and then - are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people. Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or (as sometimes happens) is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty.

This is known as "bad luck"!"

73 Dyson is a classic example of a Sophist: someone trained in the art of making impressive sounding statements and speeches which have no foundation in truth, reason, or logic, and which appeal to the emotion. Sophists used to literally travel around and debate things or give speeches for a living. They would be given a topic, didn't matter what it was, and argue for that topic.

Sophistry is built around emotional appeal and making people impressed with what you sound like and seem to know rather than actual content and meaning. It was despised by Platonic students, considered trash thinking.

84 It's so obvious what's going on with the left. They suffer from a (justified) inferiority complex. This makes them angry, and they try to displace the true cause of it by claiming it is the fault of those who arouse their envy, like fugly feminists who accuse fashion models of creating "impossible standards" of beauty and thus oppressing women. Envious people who lack self-reflection are just tiresome. The problem is that now they feel no need for self restraint and are morphing into a brownshirt mob.

The Leftist being allowed to claim that Nazism (i.e., National Socialism) and Fascism (proclaimed by Mussolini as a "Third Way" and alternate choice besides Capitalism and Socialism) is maddening to me. If you don't believe in the primacy of the individual but rather that government should interfere and redistribute wealth, you are a Leftist. Collectivism is NOT charity.

Oh, here's my letter to Publix after they caved to Das Hoggenfhurher -

Dear CEO of Publix,

As a 30-year customer of yours, I was very disappointed to hear of your submission to the far-left Marxist David Hogg's childish demands concerning your corporate political contributions. You would have gained much support had you instead issued a statement that your company would not cave in to his outrageous demands and that he has no right to dictate any of your company's policies. Understand that Hogg and his media handlers would gladly put your company out of business if they could.

He does not represent the majority view in any way. His efforts to destroy our legal and human rights are very offensive to me, as they should be to you.

The NRA is not responsible for any school shootings. Blaming the NRA is akin to blaming AAA for a car accident. We should no longer tolerate these senseless attacks orchestrated by our domestic enemies. You had a wonderful opportunity to stand up to these bullies, yet you failed to do so.

I view it like they have an illness, which I genuinely believe they do. It's a burden they carry, and it's unpleasant to be around sometimes. I think they carry it, often, not because they are bad people, but because they have been exposed to a viral plague, and they were particularly susceptible to it when they were so exposed.

I don't hate them for it. I don't treat them unkindly for it.

Now the viral perpetrators, that's a different story. Those people should burn in hell... and they will.

Imagine if you were the type of person who has no self-confidence, has no way of gauging by looking inside yourself, whether you are moving in the right direction with your life or not.

Imagine if some group came along, and told you they could do all that for you. Not only that, they could explain how everything that's wrong in your world is the fault of some grand conspiracy, being perpetrated by those people who otherwise appear to be succeeding.

Their success is due to them holding you down.

It's a profoundly attractive argument, and if you have NOTHING inside of you that tells you who you are, what your worth is, there's almost no way to resist it.

If you have it inside you, you have no need for such nonsense.

That's one of our major dividing lines in this world. Those who do, and those who don't.

Kafkatrap!

========

The notion of "systemic" or societal wrongdoing is bullshit. The only way to assess wrongdoing is on an individual, case by case basis.

If there is widespread wrongdoing that conforms to a pattern, you've still got to address it on a case by case basis. If you try to address it in general terms, you end up with a cure that is worse than the disease.

And the beneficiaries continue on to be whiny, ungrateful dishonest hucksters who try to prolong the claims of grievances. So for instance, feminists complaining about the higher cost of clothes and lack of free birth control.

It's tempting to say that any injustices against particular "groups" should have been allowed to go on. If you knew that Dahmer were unjustly accused of a particular murder, it might be better to let that injustice happen and do nothing, since if he's released, you know he'll be free to murder other people. What's the use of "group" justice if that group will act worse than the so called "oppressors" (who were morally sensitive enough to give the group a hearing in the first place)?

These are the dark thoughts that leftists have been causing me to think lately.

Though said crowd comprises a lot of smart and hard-working folks, I personally know of one guy who fits the "worthless gubmint worker who would've been fired years ago in the private sector" description to a T. I'm interesting in reading the EO and will be following up with his supervisor in the coming weeks.

It's so nice that we're not living in the past when the Right was unwilling to fight to make its ambitions known, when an asshat like Joe Biden could say "they want to put y'all back in chains!" and go unchallenged. Now we call bullshit and assert our ambition is simply MAGA.

Almost right. But it's not simply a lack of training which makes them irrational. Irrationality is a core element of postmodern neo-Marxism. (Actually, the original really, if you pushed them, also rejected reason. But not so openly.) They really do deny that reason and language are meaningless. To them, the only use for language is power.

243 Watched the whole thing. Peterson was Peterson, and clearly the star of the show. Which is why they have to demonize him.

Frye was like always, an aesthete who thinks himself an intellectual. That usage seems to date from about the 30's. At least, Evelyn Waugh objected to the loss of intellect in the meaning of "intellectual".

Goldberg was mostly lefty-fem pabulum, except for lying about Peterson. I wish we could organize the way they do, and concentrate fire on a particular lefty who crosses the line, forcing them to address cases of blatant dishonesty. Then on to another. Not that Goldberg is high-profile enough to be chosen. But if we could discredit a few like that, it'd go a long way to making the world better. But we live in such a target-rich environment it would take actual coordination; today we are too scattershot, with one hitting Pelosi, another Tapper, another Comey, etc.

Dyson was appalling. He did, twice and only twice, show a near-human intelligence. First, his high point was when he at least did acknowledge that others had slaves, but tried to deflect by pointing out that the Greeks' version wasn't racially based. The only thing he said which might have been worth discussing. (Really, are Arabs black?)

The 2nd was when he pretty clearly realized that he'd lost the audience with the "mean, mad white man" line. Note that he soon afterwards tried to justify it. But of course he wasn't smart enough to deflect.

244 Two points about slavery:

1. It is almost never mentioned that W Europe started moving away from it long before the 19th C. It was dying out in the Middle Ages, from most of the continent. (Please don't confuse serfs with slaves - the differences are very important.) It actually returned in the early modern era, the period of Renaissance and Enlightenment. Serfdom too had been dying, and became more burdensome (where it survived) in the same period. The reasons are complex and debatable, but one factor was surely the increasing classicism of the culture; if you imitate the Romans in as much as possible, that will be included.

2. There were a few places which didn't abandon it, and the most important was in Iberia, where it was simply impossible to stop people from enslaving captives when cheek by jowl with Moslems who did the same to you. And it was Iberia which started the European expansion, worldwide. Note that the American Indians were NOT supposed to be enslaved. But moving around Africa to India, it's not clear they really grasped who wasn't Moslem. Da Gama actually thought that Hindus must be some sort of heretical Christians.

But of course, the Moslem world has never abandoned the idea.

One further point: the Barbary states were able to continue their slave raids in part because the European naval powers were in such constant war among themselves. We Americans tend to regard them as pussies for paying tribute. But really, at the time, it made no strategic sense to alienate people with ports and food, and fight another enemy. Funny that after 1815, when Brits and French and Dutch and all the rest could cooperate, the shit hit the fan for the paynim. No doubt that was racism too.

Posted by: George LeS at May 26, 2018 04:46 PM (59GGI)

245 You'd think at least one leftist would have an epiphany that their hatred of open debate, their love of censorship and the speed which they threaten violence, if not actual violence, that their positions are indefensible.

247 "...how little the Left cares about clarity of language."

It's much worse than that. For the Left, clarity of language is their mortal enemy, and the first thing they try to wreck in a discussion.

This was immortalized in Orwell's "Newspeak," where it was fully recognized that control over language is control over almost everything else.

Posted by: MW at May 26, 2018 05:31 PM (wNx6K)

248 @247:

Exactly. Objective reality and its messenger, language, are enemies of the Left. Most of us no longer give a shit what they say or think because it's not moored in truth. We need a divorce.
