Were you Home Schooled?

1 My mother taught me TO APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE.

"If you're going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.”

2 My mother taught me RELIGION.

"You better pray that will come out of the carpet.

3 My father taught me about TIME TRAVEL.

If you don't straighten up, I'm going to knock you into the middle of next week!”

4 My father taught me LOGIC.

"Because I said so, that's why.”

5 My mother taught me MORE LOGIC .

"If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you're not going to the store with me.”

6 My mother taught me FORESIGHT.

"Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you're in an accident.”

7 My father taught me IRONY.

"Keep crying, and I'll give you something to cry about.”

8 My mother taught me about the science of OSMOSIS.

"Shut your mouth and eat your supper.”

9 My mother taught me about CONTORTIONISM.

"Just you look at that dirt on the back of your neck!”

10. My mother taught me about STAMINA.

"You'll sit there until all that spinach is gone.”

11. My mother taught me about WEATHER.

"This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”

12. My mother taught me about HYPOCRISY.

"If I told you once, I've told you a million times, don't exaggerate!”

13. My father taught me the CIRCLE OF LIFE.

"I brought you into this world, and I can take you out."

14. My mother taught me about BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION .

"Stop acting like your father!”

15. My mother taught me about ENVY.

"There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don't have wonderful parents like you do.”

16.My mother taught me about ANTICIPATION.

"Just wait until we get home.”

17. My mother taught me about RECEIVING

"You are going to get it from your father when you get home!”

18. My mother taught me MEDICAL SCIENCE.

"If you don't stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.”

19. My mother taught me ESP.

"Put your sweater on; don't you think I know when you are cold?”

20. My father taught me HUMOR.

"When that lawn mower cuts off your toes, don't come running to me.”

21. My mother taught me HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT.

"If you don't eat your vegetables, you'll never grow up.”

22.My mother taught me GENETICS.

"You're just like your father.”

23. My mother taught me about my ROOTS.

"Shut that door behind you. Do you think you were born in a barn?”

24. My mother taught me WISDOM

"When you get to be my age, you'll understand.”

25. My father taught me about JUSTICE .

"One day you'll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!”

To be honest with you, I heard more of these than I didn't hear.

When you're canoeing down a river and see you a critter. Leave the damn thing alone. OK?

Don’t pull rattlesnakes out of the water. Or alligators. Those are the common-sense takeaway from an incident involving a kayaker on the Edisto River.

Last Sunday in South Carolina, Michael Adams, 28, was kayaking with a group of friends on the Edisto River. Family members initially told investigators the snake fell from a tree onto Adams. But on Tuesday, his brothers said he yanked the snake out of the river.

*****

Speaking of critters (This one always makes me laugh):

Now, let's put a face to stupidity the voice.

Let us take a peak at an active volcano.

Obviously, this will improve the situation and make one a Genius Award Winner.

40 I drove up to the top of Volcan de Masaya in Nicaragua. Paved road, even, and a nice parking lot at the top. Look into the Santiago crater, and there is blue smoke, and the smell of burning sulfur. The traces of previous eruptions are easy to see on the landscape around it. Never went up there at night, but I guess a red glow can be seen.

I think it would be cool to fly a video drone down into the crater for close look. Go down in it on a rope? No way, Jose.

When these things start to become a hazard, let people hunt them until the populations come down sufficiently to remove the threat. I'm guessing that local laws prevented this woman from blowing that black bear away, so she was helpless to do anything.

100 Steve and Cold Bear,

We have started having coyotes show up in our suburbs. A neighbor two doors down found one killing a cat that got out. He called animal control who told him that the coyotes were welcome because they were the only predators for the "invasive" Canadian geese, they said they weren't going to do anything about them. This is NoVA, so my guess is the invasive geese are pooping where the city give workers walk. These idiots have no idea/and or don't care that coyotes are vicious, will attack pets and small children, carry disease, and are a true invasive species, compared to migratory geese.

county had been awarded more than $1 million by the Federal Emergency
Management Agency to fund projects aimed at reducing the flood risk in
the areas surounding Main Street. At the time, he called it an
"important step in the rebirth of downtown Ellicott City."

189 DE. i started taking it a year ago, as a goof, because my 62-yr old hips were chronic discomfort. I feared hip replacements in the near-term. Two colleagues at work swore by it; a teaspoon a day, and it's ridiculously cheap. I had never heard of it; i thought they were either joking or dupes. both were my age and had joint pain and stiffness. So I figured, what's to lose? DE was a cheap and easy way to possibly stave that off a while.

Within one week (1 tsp/day) all pain in both hips vanished. No side effects. And over the past year, i have occasionally stopped my 1 tsp/day treatment... and sure enough, within 3-4 days, the pain returned. Doctor's visits revealed no adverse effects.

So I am now a believer. Good luck all who try it; it's worked for me, big time.

208 City Flooding.

We were in Detroit for a baseball game and after the game we were trying to get out of town but the freeway was beginning to flood from the rain. The storm drains were backing up in low areas (underpasses especially) instead of draining the runoff, the storm drain looked like fountains of water gushing up out of the ground. We got through just before the freeway flooded.

Then in Albuquerque one summer, rain in the foothills filled the storm channel to the point where the flood water topped a bridge, and that storm channel was 10-15 feet deep. One woman was killed when she tried to drive across the flooded bridge and was swept off the bridge.

When I was in grade school, I used to make waterways through my sandbox and then flood the sand box. Eventually all the sand washed away into the yard, but it was fun while the sand lasted.

It's got to have silica to be diatomaceous earth. Diatoms are single-celled marine plants that build themselves tiny shells of silica, typically covered in spines and spikes. That's why the stuff kills bugs; it clogs the pores in their hide that they breathe through.

I've got a furnace guy coming at 0800. Meanwhile, we're all camped out in the basement (literally- we're in sleeping bags) while constantly sipping water.

Nobody was going to be the stereotype oldest, middle and youngest child. They were each going to be their own person and they would grow up without the baggage that goes along with growing up. Our plan was well thought out and perfect. Fast forward twenty-odd years and they grew up as carbon copies of the birth order. Not a single thing we did made a bit of difference. I thought my kids has gotten through life with no sibling rivalry. Hah! They were suppressing it until they grew up.

That was true until the current Kim. When he took power he basically had all the Chinese puppets, spies, and sympathizers murdered. I think he was worried about a Chinese sponsored coup.

That's why the Chinese are being more helpful - their influence has waned considerably, and while the Norks were useful when they were under control now they're looking more like a nuclear-armed liability.

2, if we ever *do* go apeshit on the Norks, I would bet Trump himself will be on the phone with one hand while he's pressing the big red button with the other hand, going "look guys, this isn't about you, we'll make this worth your while..."

I don't know how true that is.

I'll put it this way -- I think China and North Korea are both playing multi faceted games here.

North Korea cannot be seen throughout Asia, especially in South Korea, as being a client state of China.

Internal to North Korea, there probably is not a whole ton said about China.

China doesn't want the US to think that they have a huge amount of control over the Norks -- it's easier for China to "play the middleman." In that sense, they pretend to go along with US sanctions, and pretend to have issues with the Norks, etc. etc.

But I suspect that China pulls a lot more strings behind the scenes than is publicly acknowledged. I think North Korea would have collapsed decades ago if China was not supplying hard currency, food, oil, equipment, etc -- much of it on the down low.

There's really no secret here. China's asking for the US to let one of their industries have better access to US markets ... in exchange for x.

This is how these multi thousand page "free trade" deals work. It's a tit for tat that usually is basically "we'll sell access to US markets at the expense of US companies in exchange for you doing what we want."

Trump is trying to make sure the US gets more out of these deals.

He's doing exactly what he should be doing.

314 Sounds a lot like my sister. When she used to live closer to me I sometimes had to feed her cats (when she was in the horsespittle for heart attacks and so forth) and never saw the critters. Had to assume they were there somewhere. At one time for a year or so she wouldn't let me in her apt. and then ended up in the horsespittle and when I went over to check on the cats I found that she had allowed trash to build up about two feet deep except for pathways. There was all the mail, just opened or not but thrown on the floor. Pizza boxes and stuff like that everywhere. I hired a couple of guys to spend about three days going through all of it and hauling away all the stuff except for what she agreed she should keep. A fucking nightmare is what it was. Then she moved to Houston to be with some friends (she told me last time we spoke that she hadn't seen them for about a year) and is now about 1500 blessed miles away.

336 Chicken safety fear as chlorine washing fails bacteria tests
The investigation, by a team of microbiologists from Southampton University and published in the US journal mBio, found that bacilli such as listeria and salmonella remain completely active after chlorine washing. The process merely makes it impossible to culture them in the lab, giving the false impression that the chlorine washing has been effective.

Because I had to deal with the effects of a 12-hour-long power outage, I missed both masses at my usual (FSSP) parish and went up the road to my local parish. I haven't been to a Novus Ordo mass in 30+ years.

Let's say it was... different. Let's also say that it made me appreciate the Tridentine Rite all the more. This is not to disparage either the canonical correctness of the ceremony I attended or the piety of those attending but I wondered occasionally about what denomination's service I had wandered into.

I believe that hefty doses of anti biotics in the feed and a brief chlorine spray does not make up for the disgusting and unhygienic way in which factory farm chickens are raised.

I 100% would make sure your chicken is fully cooked before eating it.

Even with my backyard flock and the chicken meat I supplement it with from the local farm, I'm big on checking the meat with a thermometer to ensure that the meat was hot enough to kill bacteria.

But yeah, with store bought stuff, I'd be doubly as careful

Yes and no. In the US we sequester juries to keep them from prejudicial information. In the UK they sequester the information. They don't have a 1st amendment, so it's legal.

Robinson knew what he was doing would get him arrested. My read is he's engaging in civil disobedience, and part of that is a willingness to go to jail.

Posted by: Ace's liver at May 27, 2018 11:56 PM (h2Bdk)

384 I'm really disturbed by the fact that Robinson was convicted and sentenced within an hour of his arrest, and he'll probably end up being murdered in prison.

We took more than two weeks to sentence Jeffrey Dahmer to the same fate for 15 counts of murder, plus necrophilia and cannibalism.

What did Robinson do? He talked, and practiced random acts of journalism.

Does Robinson not deserve at least the same level of due process that Dahmer got, if he's getting sentenced to a similar fate?

387 a brilliant idea for a carbon tax that would pay dividends to the American people?

Brilliant, yup.

"Carbon taxes" and "Carbon credits" are proof that environmentalists don't give a shit about the environment; they're just Leftist control freaks.

Take money away from productive carbon users. Give it to people who don't use as much carbon. Those people become wealthier. They start doing things that wealthier people do. Those things (surprise!) tend to require energy, and thus produce carbon.

Look at the last 2 decades of CO2 production in the mature economies of the USA and EU (basically flat), versus the growing economies of India and China (triple or quadruple the CO2 production from 20 years ago).

I was just looking it up. Judges here issue gag orders, but that's usually on the parties involved. Now, I've read that judges have issued gag orders against newspapers for publishing info on criminal trials (such as the defendant confessed), but I don't know the status of these. Some have apparently been overturned.

Now, a big problem with gag orders is in juvenile and custody cases. "For the children" lets them get away with a lot of gagging.

That out of the way, I will try using the logic board from the XP drive on Win7 drive, and see if it boots, or can at least be read in a Linux environment. We are derived from common law, yes. We have one key distinction from the other common law countries, though, and that is our Constitution. We have common law philosophy and the importance of precedent, but we also have a core charter that very sensibly lays out the prohibitions on the state. It is, in my mind, the "secret sauce" that makes America better than everyone else. They have unchecked common law. We checked it with a final arbiter in the form of the Constitution. It doesn't always work (people are free to ignore it, and people are doing that with disturbing frequency) but it is still key.

+++++++++
You could make an argument that FBI and CIA are allowed, since federal law is very much a thing, and national intelligence is justified in fed jurisdiction (though they are deranged, broken, hopeless and should be dismantled). The rest of them are all implicitly handled in the 10th amendment. The states can figure out education, environmental protection, etc. The whole "50 state laboratories" thing is a good idea. Let the good ideas spread and the bad ones result in failure. Federalizing everything removes any opportunity for better solutions.

544 <<Now, let's put a face to stupidity the voice.>>

I get that this is a joke, but for all the things the young lady is being (scared, frustrated, etc), stupid aint one of them. This is how you are supposed to act when encountering a bear; in particular, you're supposed to make constant noise until it goes away. Most people know that you should never walk noiselessly in bear country because they are likely to attack when startled, but once you encounter one, you need to be making constant noise in order that it stays alert to your presence and position. If you go quiet, it will either forget you're there and be startled or might get the idea you are trying to sneak up on it. I say this both from education and the experience of three very close encounters with the creatures.

My money bets on the Red Hand of Ulster.

Though not as pervasive and murderous the IRA, they were at least *not* funded by the commies and Kennedys. Yes, I know, I repeat myself there.

Someone over there just needs to figure out how to cut 'em loose and let the dawgs hunt.

Tony was going to smother her with a pillow when he heard the FBI tapes of her plotting with Uncle Junior to have Tony whacked. Her stroke and Uncle Jun's arrest were what kept him from retaliating.

You will never see from the creators what they planned to do with Livia. David Chase has refused to even hint whether Tony was whacked in that final scene, or whether the Russian in the Pine Barrens episode survived. Chase said "in real life, you don't get resolutions to everything"

Posted by: kbdabear at May 28, 2018 01:11 AM (eh0Va)

++++

Liv's stroke was from earlier. At the end of her last season, Tony gave Liv some airline tickets from that sports store bust out. Since the tickets were part of a fraud, they were flagged. Livia used them at the airport and got arrested. She called Tony then.

FBI was trying to flip her. Based on her past, would she have flipped? She hated the FBI, but she was also pissed at Tony.

Tony was killed in the final scene. Butchie was behind it. All the foreshadowing is there. You know how Butchie knew where and when to send the hitman? AJ's girlfriend. If you recall, when AJ attempted suicide, he ended up in a group home. After he had been there for a bit, he met someone he already knew. If you also recall, Butchie was spreading the gossip around about AJ's suicide attempt. Butchie put that girl there to hookup with AJ and keep tabs on Tony.

When Carmella is talking to Tony on the phone about their dinner that night, she has the conversation in front of AJ and his girlfriend. When she hangs up, she gives him date and time. Girlfriend doesn't go to the dinner, but she knows all Butchie needs to know.

547 I did a look and couldn't find a single article about Chase spouting off on politics, Bush, Trump or Obama even *once,* and God knows he's had numerous opportunities. And let's be honest: anybody that mouths off about politics against the right automatically becomes a folk hero to the left, so why wouldn't he have said it if he felt it? That tells me the guy must at least have *some* maturity.

Posted by: qdpsteve at May 28, 2018 01:20 AM (eMKNe)

From what I've read, Chase's life's dream isn't to be liked, he's not one to blow smoke up his peers' asses because he doesn't care much for them and certainly doesn't care if they love him or hate him. He's made his "fuck you money". He doesn't seem to be the most pleasant guy to be around in any instance.

I bought the Blu-Ray DVD set last week and I'm enjoying watching the episodes again, it's worth the money I spent no matter what leftists got the $80 to split up among themselves.

The time I spend watching the Sopranos DVDs is time that doesn't go to cable or broadcast tv networks and their advertisers.

Posted by: kbdabear at May 28, 2018 01:30 AM (eh0Va)

548 kbdabear, that's what I've read as well. Chase does *not* sound like a nice guy at all, in fact he sounds to me like John Ford, who was a train wreck of a person when he wasn't directing movies (and was a complete asshole while he *was* directing them; he was abusive to John Wayne for decades).

Anyway, thanks for the support.

551 Federal law is a thing, it is a monstrous bloated thing, when it is pared down to what it ought to be, then perhaps agencies such as the FBI and CIA are warranted in a very limited role.

But first...

The federal govt needs to be drastically reduced.
