I know that Renaissance painters used contemporary fashion norms when depicting earlier times. But, the guy with the pink shirt, flowing epaulets, and some kind of floral depiction on his head....What's up with that? I don't recall any of the disciples being fruits. Was he just one of the riffraff that hung around the bars the disciples frequented? And who is the guy with the wombat on his head?

Matthew the tax collector worked on behalf of the hated Roman Empire. Simon the Zealot wanted to throw off the Roman overlords and get back to self-governance.
So basically a Big Government guy and a Tea Party guy. That would have made for some interesting conversations around the disciples' campfire. Posted by: grammie winger - at May 21, 2018 09:32 AM (lwiT4) 32

Matthew knew he needed to go. He wanted to go. When confronted with a Holy God he was compelled to follow Him. His sin which I'm sure he was mentally challenged by was confronting him. You see as a Jewish tax collector you were really well off. He had everything he needed and it wasn't enough to make him happy. So in his desperation he submitted to Jesus. It's the only way to come to Christ, you have to be desperate. Beg God for mercy. He will give you mercy. He never runs out of mercy, but His patience is limited. It's the only way.

It's fun watching the NeverTrumpists come to the realization that not only have they been wrong this whole time about the Mueller investigation, but they've been 180 degrees wrong. Not just wrong, but they've been the left's useful idiots for thet last 18 months. Read Jonah G's recent Twitter for case study in confirmation bias (Mike Mukasey must be senile, Mark Penn is one of Trump's stooges, etc). Hilarious.

---------- The Kennedy seat fight (should it come) will be fun to watch. Gorsuch was just a Scalia replacement. It kept the status quo. The only argument the liberals sort of had was the "stolen seat" argument, which likely backfired on them since it basically meant the people didn't have a choice. Kennedy is a swing voter, sometimes he is on your side, sometimes not. Now I suspect the Dems will go over the top and say he is such a conservative, this too will backfire on them. If he is such a conservative, replacing him with a conservative is again just keeping the status quo. They would be better off claiming he is a moderate and needs to be replaced with a moderate. But they can't help themselves. Now a Ginsberg retirement would lead to an epic battle. Posted by: SH at May 21, 2018 10:53 AM (sX1BW) 364

It's not a sin to be greedy, but to act upon greed. Same with homosexuality.
Posted by: John Waters at May 21, 2018 10:26 AM (n9gGi) Correct, but Saint Thomas Aquinas distinguishes between natural and unnatural sin. It's why matricide feels more horrific to us than homicide of a stranger. Why killing your own child is worse than being ok with someone else killing theirs. Man's fallen nature and concupiscence battle with man's will, so "natural" sins, like greediness, the physical desire to reproduce, gluttony, lack of charity to one's enemies, passionate actions from anger, etc. are sins which are provoked through living in the world, insufficient will and a lack of enough grace to combat man's fallen nature. Other mortal sins, those that are "unnatural," according to Aquinas, are more disordered. Of course, it's the action not the desire or thought which harms the soul, others and rejects God. Of course, the Red Pope was busy reading Marx instead of the Summa. Posted by: dagny at May 21, 2018 11:10 AM (+xe3a) 452

By the way, the flowers in Meghan's bouquet were picked by Harry from Diana's garden. The roses placed throughout the chapel were white roses, Diana's favorite.
