Ford Airplane - History Time A Ford Airplane - AMAZING This was 6 months BEFORE Pearl Harbor! Henry Ford was determined that he could mass produce bombers just as he had done with cars, so he built the Willow Run assembly plant in Michigan and proved it. It was the world's largest building under one roof at the time. This film will absolutely blow you away - one B-24 every 55 minutes. . . and Ford had their own pilots to test them. and they had no recalls ADOLF HITLER HAD NO IDEA THE U.S. WAS CAPABLE OF THIS KIND OF THING.
Well that is certainly one way to get rush hour traffic rolling again. The police don't care for rush hour traffic either, apparently. Peters lost control of his vehicle after striking two other vehicles on the ramp. He emerged naked from his disabled vehicle and ran into the northbound lanes of I-95/64, police said. Witnesses said they saw him dancing and rolling around on the interstate before running back to the on-ramp. Police said Peters then charged the Richmond officer who deployed his Taser in an effort to disable Peters. The Taser was ineffective, police said, so the officer fired his service weapon, striking Peters, who was unarmed.Well, we know who won that pissing contest. Be careful in the woods of Michigan. h/t redc1c4 Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Lotters. Notice: Posted with permission by AceCorp, LLC. Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

I had a chat today with a guy who is not exactly with the FBI, but who has connections. He said he was appalled by the stuff that started coming out about Comey et al. (just as most of us were). But when he asked a good friend who is a veteran agent, he learned that the rank and file were also disgusted. This is what I have always thought must be the case. No, they didn't all resign in protest, but why should they anyway? No need to fall on a grenade when you can just jump behind a wall and wait for events, dear boy, events to take place. As they are.

Ha. Just recently read a book about WWII production in the US (Forge of Freedom).
Actually, Willow Run was the obsession/project of Ford's production guy at the time - whose name escapes me. Volatile character. Had actual fist fights with other executives at the Willow Run plant early on, when things were not taking off as hoped. He was the successor to Big Bill Knudsen, who moved to GM from Ford and helped make it the dominant auto company. He was also Roosevelt's key guy prior to Pearl Harbor in organizing private industry for military production. Ford himself was strongly isolationist/pacifist/opposed to involvement in war production, until Pearl Harbor. Pretty amazing story, after FDR called on Knudsen to head up the mobilization effort, Knudsen immediately quit GM and launched into the task. One of the best episodes was a meeting Knudsen convened, in Detroit, of all the key auto industry players (his long-time colleagues and competitors), at which he basically went around the room, asking things like "Who can handle large forgings? Who can make aviation engines?". Book said that roughly 20% of all US war production was done by the auto industry (anybody here have a Saginaw Steering M-1 carbine?). Partly of course because it was the largest best organized mass production entity in the economy, and partly thanks to Knudsen's incredibly efforts, and those of his successors (he moved to the Army Air Corps, was the only civilian ever made a major general, and was a global troubleshooter for Gen. Hap Arnold). Posted by: rhomboid at May 19, 2018 10:03 PM (QDnY+) 93

Hitler also did not know that the Soviets had over 22,000 tanks in inventory in 1941 with the new T-34 already rolling off the assembly lines.
The Germans had about 6,000. Posted by: Hairyback Guy at May 19, 2018 09:58 PM (EoRCO) The Germans had a complete failure in intelligence-gathering concerning Soviet tanks. The Germans thought that their Panzer III tanks with the short 50mm guns would be a match for the Soviet tanks. The Germans were still using the 37mm PAK anti-tank gun for their infantry. The Germans were shocked once they encountered the Soviet heavy tanks. I read a contemporary account where the Germans were employing 105mm howitzers in a direct-fire role during Operation Barbarrosa in 1941. By 1943, the Germans had developed better tanks but the Soviets had overwhelming numbers. As they say, quantity has a quality all its own. Hadrian, correct, as I noted above, Willow Run had a rough start. As I recall from the book, a lot of progress was made when they started farming out sub-assemblies, and doing final assembly at Willow Run. That allowed them to hit full potential.
Interesting story, when the Ford team flew to San Diego to study how Consolidated built the B-24, they discovered that unlike their auto production, there were constant design tweaks and changes, and a lot of "craft" type production - hand-fitting and finishing. Not true flexible mass production. They had to transform the B-24's plans into the kind with tight tolerances in order to go to mass production. gNewt, according to this last book I read, Henry was bitterly opposed to involvement in war production, and turned Knudsen down flat when first approached about joining other companies in his pre-war mobilization. This was 1940. FDR finally panicked and called in Knudsen as the Brits were evacuating Dunkirk.
Forget when Ford finally came on board, but I think Edsel was really running the company at that point. Don't know about Ford's other possible motives, but for whatever reason he was a firm "no", and the only big one, when Knudsen first went around trying to get things going. And recall things *were* going before Pearl Harbor. In shipbuilding - Kaiser was already jumping into the sector and bringing his new methods - but most of the product was going to the UK. The US military mobilization acquisitions actually suffered greatly as much of the ramped up production went to the UK, prior to Pearl Harbor. Of course after that, production increased astronomically, and the US consumed the bulk of it. Posted by: rhomboid at May 19, 2018 10:26 PM (QDnY+) 182

I think the US total carrier production (including escort type, just converted freighters) was well over 100. Over 100. And the Essex class (the heart of the "new" US Navy that started showing up in 1943) was designed and planned prior to Pearl Harbor.
Odd factoid. According to that book, the GM properties (factories) in Germany were *never* utilized for German war production. I think they were damaged by Allied bombing, but apparently Todt and Speer never actually made use of them. Seems odd, though don't know details about these facilities. WWI as a bar fight:
Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria's pint. Austria demands Serbia buy it a whole new suit because of the new beer stains on its trouser leg. Germany expresses its support for Austria's point of view. Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit. Serbia points out that it can't afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria's trousers. Russia and Serbia look at Austria. Austria asks Serbia who it's looking at. Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone. Austria inquires as to whose army will assist Russia in doing so. Germany appeals to Britain that France has been looking at it, and that its sufficiently out of order that Britain not intervene. Britain replies that France can look at who it wants to, that Britain is looking at Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it? Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action anymore. Britain and France ask Germany whether it's looking at Belgium. Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone. Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium. France and Britain punch Germany. Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other. Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it's on Britain's side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria. Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it. France gets thrown through a plate glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets thrown through another one, gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change. Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting. America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool, then pretends it won the fight all by itself. By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany's fault. While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends... Posted by: NaCly Dog at May 19, 2018 10:46 PM (hyuyC) 267

The U.S. industrial ramp-up before and during WWII was nothing short of impossible, but they did it.
Thing was then, that the U.S.A. was still a very robust blend of agricultural and heavy industrial industries. Those men and women knew ALL about Hard Work, and most everyone was possessed of skills held as common knowledge, be it shop, field or both. So, what are our odds now, of responding rapidly to the demands of an impending war, the glow of which fires are visible just over the horizon. They gonna hire that insurance kid, who doesn't know a lug wrench from a jack-handle? (one and the same in many cases!) And yeah, that thankless twelve hour, back breaking, sweat filled day. They can learn that swiftly enough, I suppose. But most of 'em are so very soft, so unused to the slightest difficulty in life. I can predict only one thing, for sure. It *will* be interesting. Prayer request please:
My nephew graduated with a master's in business administration today and he and his wife threw a party. It was a lot of fun, but I heard something there that deeply frightens me. My niece who will be turning 26 in just a few days, had severe abdominal pain and a lot of bleeding from the rectum a few days ago. Her parents took her to the ER and were told it was food poisoning, which was ridiculous since she had eaten nothing but a PBJ sandwich and some ice cream. She has an appointment with a GI doc on Tuesday. Colon cancer runs in her mother's side of the family - a few have died young of it. I'm scared. Bleeding from the rectum is never a good sign. She got a good job last August and is looking to buy a condo. She's 26, for God's sake. Posted by: Donna&&&&&&V sez don't you dare walk the damn pitcher at May 19, 2018 11:11 PM (H80UQ) 360

My deepest sympathies to you and the rest of the family and the friends who rallied around her this past year and a half. There is very little to say that is good about her cancer and her passing. But with a bit of luck, Joyce's doctors have learned a little more about her specific cancer that will help somebody else down the road, and the whole miserable experience will not have been in vain. I know it doesn't do one thing for Joyce herself, but from your descriptions of her, I suspect it would please her to know that she contributed to another person's chances of just possibly surviving. GULP! Ok I am going to say it! Henry Ford also built
manufacturing plants in England that produced trucks for the Third Reich . Henry took all that Adolph cash. I guess he also took a page from the House of Rothschild playbook and played both sided of a war to make money.... Just sayin.. Me Mum was born in Hull (sometimes referred to as hell by the locals) on the east coast of the isle on the English channel.. That has sparked my interest in WWII since I was not a lad but after I was over my 60's hippie days and engaged watching World at War on (Bill Moyers archetech of El BJ's Great Society) PBS.. Posted by: sOME mORON at May 19, 2018 11:24 PM (ICWiF) I don't think Ford's manufacturing plants in England supplied the Third Reich, certainly not after Sept. 3, 1939. But he plants in Germany, and also in Russia. The workhorse truck of the Wehrmacht was the Opel Blitz, and Opel was a GM partner. The trucks Ford made in Russia were based on the early '30's Ford AA truck, and were sadly out of date by the time the war began. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 19, 2018 11:37 PM (dOgJt) 441

GI says it is transient ischemia brought on when my body shunts blood from my bowel to my limbs to provide oxygen for the intensity of my workload. Colon cancer usually involves stool that resembles coffee grounds-old blood that has accumulated up in the colon and gets passed. NOT something to ignore. Prayers up. 467 -- Prince Ludwig -- Actually, I ran across a incident where a SJW got knocked back HARD!!!
A gal released a fantasy novel a few years back. Came out in hardback, which is not usual for a new author. Got great reviews and everybody, including me, was happy. Interesting premise, pretty good execution. Second book comes out in hb the following year, and the author swings a mighty SJW bat at all of us "homophobes". You could have held a wienie roast over the Amazon reviews, the readers were so ticked off. Third book was scheduled for the next year, except it never happened. The publisher kept pushing the pub date back and back and back. After three years, the third book was finally released -- in trade paperback, not hardback. Big demotion for author. I read it and there was not a single hint of SJW. Somebody somewhere took note of the author's audience's displeasure and stomped that little SJW flat as a pancake. Well, I spent most of the afternoon, after mowing some patches of grass, refurbishing a Beaver. A Beaver table saw, made by Rockwell Canada Corp., lo these many years ago. The only parts of it that aren't cast iron are heavy pressed steel and cold rolled steel. I think it will accept a ten-inch blade.
I disassembled it, and ground the rust off the table with an angle grinder, followed up with the D/A sander ( and that item broke in mid-job, and needed a bearing replaced, which I found). I will have to make a crank or handwheel for the blade-raising worm, and a motor bracket. With both wings on the table, it's 4 feet wide, and weighs about 200 pounds. I don't think Ford's manufacturing plants in England supplied the Third Reich, certainly not after Sept. 3, 1939. But he plants in Germany, and also in Russia. The workhorse truck of the Wehrmacht was the Opel Blitz, and Opel was a GM partner. The trucks Ford made in Russia were based on the early '30's Ford AA truck, and were sadly out of date by the time the war began.
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at May 19, 2018 11:37 PM (dOgJt) I stand corrected on the location of production but the dates are during war time..and by the time the Germans were armed for war Ford already made his cash so I stand in my statement of fact.with this caveat.. https://tinyurl.com/ycjkq46c Posted by: sOME mORON at May 20, 2018 12:26 AM (ICWiF) 575

Sanding "flapper wheel" bits, GREATLY > grinder wheels, for dressing a cast iron saw table. The ultimate "rescue" for such? Get that machine to a proper machine shop, and have 'em surface mill the bed and extensions down about 0.01~0.02, to expose a vast expanse of virginal iron and steel. The "flapper wheel" won't gouge the bed like a grinder wheel, and the machine shop solution, will result in a single, unified, utterly flat and square plane atop the bed. That said, I now have to re-tap the belt tension locknut (female) hole in the motor mount casting, on mine. Gonna drill it, sleeve it, and re-tap it in the original thread. Cause that's the right way to get 'er done. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at May 20, 2018 12:42 AM (QzJWU) 596

Jim, I used a 36 grit resin-bonded "paper" disc on the angle grinder to remove the rust, not a grinding wheel. There are some slight scratches, and lots of tiny pits, but the overall surface is now smooth enough to work.

Missed the movie thread this week. Typical. It was about Apocalypse Now. If TJM or any movie buffs are still up for discussion, I'm keen. It's a masterpiece of cinema and possibly the best war movie ever made. It's Kubrick great and actually edges out Full Metal Jacket and Lean's Lawrence of Arabia. Coppola's AN is, imho, the greatest extended, non stop work of art (with a capital "A") comitted to the screen. Every frame is stunning and only 2001 is it's equal. As for content, let me say that amongst vets that know what they're talking about, AN captured the ESSence of memories. No, it's not a faithful account of day to doings... but the the take away is AN captures the overall feeling and sense of what it was like there at that time. The bizarre, the danger, the madness and the surreal. The best description I heard was that AN, though over the top, represents what the dreams and (admittedly distorted) memories of of the experience. "You don't really remember the tedium and routine much at all. But the otherworldly stuff stays with you forever". That's what AN is, a dream and a nightmare of various things presented as a story on film. As for Willard's final act... Kurtz wanted to go out on his feet as a soldier. Not die from a tropical disease. Willard gave him that. Posted by: otho at May 20, 2018 02:00 AM (7xR2D) 641
Maybe next movie thread, I guess, a recap. Just sad I missed this one.

That's good.
I hope. As far as the British wedding thing here's my $.02. It, like every other damn thing (I'm looking at you Preakness, NBA playoffs, Olympics, etc.) is such a contrived, ginned up, fakey fake, overhyped, bit of non-event that it holds no real interest. She's not a f***ing princess for crying out loud. Just another excuse for Johnny Weir to put on a woman's hat and mince about on-camera. (I don't know, can only imagine that he had a role). Effing bread and circuses. Other than that it was very enjoyable. Posted by: Muldoon at May 20, 2018 02:04 AM (m45I2) 643
632 Can't say I ever wanted to be a princess as a little girl.
*shrugs* But yeah, a lot of women still believe in fairy tales. Posted by: SMH - Get right or get left at May 20, 2018 01:51 AM (MKLBv) Well, I might have wanted to, but I was more into fishing, hunting, shooting handguns, using black powder, running with dogs, that sort of fun. Princessing seemed a bit boring by comparison. Mind you, I wear skirts daily and I cook, sew and knit, but those are just pastimes. I know fun when I see it. Posted by: tcn in AK at May 20, 2018 02:05 AM (NXsWM) 644
Also, to be a princess, you'd have to be in a country with a monarch, and we fought a war to get away from all that. No parade of silly hats changes that fact one iota.

If this book didn't cost me $40, wasn't about the last surviving Doolittle Raider, and wasn't signed by the 102 year old man himself; I would probably think about chucking this book just because of one sentence. What is this sentence? The author, Dennis R. Okerstrom when describing Richard 'Dick' Cole's hometown of Dayton, OH just has to slip in this - and it laid claim to one of the first accepted African American poets, Paul Lawrence Dunbar. Who? And how does that have any bearing on a story rooted in aviation, Orville Wright, Jimmy Doolittle, World War II, and one Dick Cole? Posted by: Anna Puma (HQCaR) at May 20, 2018 02:35 AM (MMrzc) 668
