A Moron's Story

I had a paper route as a 10yr old in the 70's (so, no pics). It was mostly older people who all seemed to have a dog in the house. There were three I still remember.

First up, the evil one and the only one on my entire route that I didn't like- It was a Chihuahua named Pancho who defined the phrase "ankle biter". He might have got "punted" once. )

Then there was "Snuffy"- a Scotch Terrier who initially would jump all over me when "collecting" until I trained him to wait until "business" was done (His owner found her purse). I would just snap my fingers and point- and he would sit there until I got paid- then he got a little time with me.

The most awesome was a Jack Russell named Doc who lived in a house with a 75 foot setback where all you had to do was ring your bicycle bell. He'd bust through the doggie door and fly down the hill. But, if you tried to just hand him the paper, he would turn his head. You had to get off your bike and pet him a couple times and tell him he was a "good doggie". Then he would fly back up the hill with the paper in his mouth. Dogs can be great sometimes.

Hey Mis Hum,

I'm not much of a bird lover, but I thought this video was pretty hilarious.

One of these days I will send some pictures of our two wild and crazy Golden Retrievers. My wife and I are big fans of the pet thread.

Bob - a deplorable lurker in Tennessee

Thank Bob, that deplorable lurker for this Funny video.

Meet The Pet Morons

ccat1.jpg

ccat2.jpg

When I finally got the nerve to send in my library photo, I had such good luck with it, I thought I should go ahead and send in pet photos. Use one or both or neither, as you deem fit.

FIRST photo: The late, great Coco the Psycho Cat. She was crazy as a loon, but it didn’t matter. She was so beautiful, she had no reason to be normal.

SECOND PHOTO: Our two current cats. On the right is King Tut, who we rescued from the local Cat Haven shelter after his owner turned him in. I cannot understand why anyone would turn him in, this is the friendliest, most lovable, HUGE cat. On the left is Leffe. We took him in from our niece, when we all realized that both Tut and Leffe were bored being only cats, and they needed cat company. Tut and Leffe bonded within a day, and like to play hide & seek then jump and pounce with each other, when they aren’t napping. - Fran

Thank you for going through your photos and submitting these for the Horde. They look like happy critters. It's obvious you're a "good human".

This is my Chihuahua, Caya. I've been been a lurker and occasional commenter since 2005 and Caya entered my life in 2009. Ace and Caya have been the only constants in my life for many years and have sustained me through some tough times. Caya was abused before I got her so she's very wary of anyone but me. I believe her motto is "All mama, all the time". She's happiest with what I call The Trifecta - on the couch, on my lap, wrapped in her blanket. - IAjewels

Wow. Quite the life Caya has. Every dog deserves their own blanket. Thanks for the submission.

I'm sending a two pictures of my first, sweet pups. Their names are Eppie Sue and Pablo. Eppie Sue is the one with the sweet smile and Pablo is the one who looks like he's afraid we're up to something. I'm afraid he's right. I took this picture on our move from Arkansas to Connecticut. They were terrific car riders.

Eppie Sue was my first, and best, dog. I found her outside my apartment when she was a puppy, but couldn't keep her. A friend took her to the animal shelter where no one adopted her and she was set to be euthanized. They called me the day before her time was up and I happily agreed to adopt her. We moved into our first house a few weeks later. Eppie Sue was very shy, but once she warmed up to a person, she would be your friend forever. If you were ever mean to her, she'd remember that too. She could keep a grudge longer than anyone.

I decided Eppie needed a friend after watching her play with Pablo, who was a friend's foster dog. After babysitting Pablo for a weekend, I decided to keep him. He was a also very shy, but incredibly smart. Together, they slowly grew a little less weary of people.

Eppie and Pablo were the best friends. One February, I let them out. I didn't realize that their wireless fence wasn't working. By the time I realized it, they were gone. We searched and searched, but could not find them. Three weeks later, I heard a little whining at the front door, and Eppie Sue was sitting there looking through the window. The second picture is of her sleeping after she got home. She was very thin and needed surgery to help her walk normally again. She did not bring Pablo back with her though. If she could have, I am sure she would have.

We adopted another dog after Pablo, but Eppie just tolerated him. Eppie Sue moved with me seven times and lived for about 13 years. The last three were bonus years. She passed away in April of 2017. I miss them very much and I'll always wonder what happened to them on their "adventure." - Heather

What a cute pair. Sorry to hear they are no longer with you. We appreciate the photos and the story.

7 I was scheduled to have my old cat, Jack, put down on Thursday. I just couldn't do it yet. He's not paralyzed but he's lost use of his back legs and losing some function on the front legs. The vet thought it could be bone spurs. I will probably take him in next week and see what the vet thinks. His appetite is good and kidney function is fine. He's incontinent so lots of extra work for me. I know he will hit the point where it really is time for him to go, but I wanted him around for awhile longer. He is the best cat I've ever had.

13 Rainy, soggy day here. Got my geriatric gray tabby huddled close to me as we watch movies. She is 19, and aside from no longer being able to jump onto the couch, she is doing just fine. We may end up bequeathing her to my older son, as she might outlive us.

Her calico "sister" is approaching 17 years, and she is not doing as well. Still eats, and purrs, but she has lost weight and sleeps a lot. She is not sick, per se, just old.

then there's Scout, a black half-Persian who is 13, but still tear-asses around the house like a kitten.

I am fond of my fur babies.

16 I'm trying to make the decision on Jack about what's right for him. We are trying Metacam for pain and it seemed like he was a bit more mobile on Thursday, which is why I called it off. I suspect it's cancer. He has a large fatty tumor on one side. This started about two months ago and is slowly getting worse. He's an old cat that sleeps most of the day, so this is no different. I picked up a gel pad for him and I've found it's pretty easy to bathe a partially paralyzed cat. So we'll see how it goes for a few more weeks. We'll be selling this house in a month or so and I don't think he's in any shape for a move.

She's 10. The three other cats are 17, 12 and 10 (or something like that). Her biggest problem seems to be with Tank (the last one acquired by my brother and his wife). She seems to be the aggressor, not Tank. But maybe he's giving her the kitty evil eye. I don't know.
She chased him off the deck last night. As in, he jumped off the side. This is so not cool.

Delilah is entered in the Bred by Exhibitor class and Finn is in Best of Breed. The two of them together are entered in Brace competition. I have a nice video of them at handling class so folks can see how it looks, how difficult it is to do and how well Her Majesty has trained them.

The universal advice I've heard is to keep the new kitty in a closed room and let the others smell him or her through the door. After a day or so try some limited introductions through a baby gate.

26 I like to have a new cat in a crate. I put the crate in the room with the other cats, so they can smell each other. That gives you a chance to see which cat is the most upset. Give them as much time as they need. When I uncrate the new cat, I try to make sure it still has a safe place to hide in. It usually goes pretty smoothly.

Feliway can help with introducing them.

28 My parents told me that even numbers of kids or animals were easier because nobody was left out. Kids (little animals) would unite against authority but would not kill the outsider (the proverbial 'third wheel'). According to their wisdom, two cats and one dog/two dogs and one cat = okay. Species solidarity and nobody is really hurt. I like the one dog/one cat combo because they cooperate to flummox the owner and they are so darned funny.

Physicists have postulated a 4th cat, but there's no evidence yet that there is such a thing.

Seriously, I have no idea how cats even work. There was one I tried to introduce years ago by scrupulously following all the rules and swapping the upstairs/downstairs cats and cross-pollenating the litter boxes and using scent masker spray so they'd slowly get used to each others' scent. After a month and a half, I opened the doors and the one upstairs spent the entire day in a corner crapping herself because she was to scared or haughty to move three feet to the litter box in the same room. Then, years later, I introduced two other cats who had never met each other via the expedient of opening the carrier on the living room floor and this is them shortly after, and ever since:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8GJMhURnUI

So clearly I have no idea how to operate a cat.

We've been here for 3 weeks. She knows her safe space, my room downstairs. For the fist week or so, I kept her down there (well, kept the other cats away from her, since she was mostly hiding under the bed). She now comes upstairs and creeps around. Not too much going on with the other 2 kitties, who keep to their own spaces. My Harli is the growling, hissing beeyotch, for the most part.

Keep the new one locked in a bathroom for a week- don't let them see each other- so everybody gets used to the smells and activity. When the cats start playing with each other underneath the door (you know, paws sticking thru), then they've pretty much adjusted.

45 No advice on the cats that don't want to mix with each other. When we brought Tommy home he lived downstairs for a while to get used to the new place w/o the dog or Boots. Now I have a baby gate on the stairs so that Boots can have his safe space upstairs (3 level house) because it seemed like he was just NOT ever going to stand up to Tommy when Tommy would growl and chase Boots, even though there was never any real fighting. Last summer Boots spent two months outside 24/7 and while dad caught glimpses I thought dad was mistaking neighbors similar size and color cat. So I'm OK with Boots not wanting to come downstairs where the exit doors are as long as he is not miserably bored.

46 The thing to watch for are abcesses, after a fight. The longer they go without a major fight, the better off you are.

We wound up with an older cat. It was born here but disappeared after the fire in 2006. It was a couple of streets down, just living in the neighborhood. A woman there took it in to the vets and they found the microchip. We had to work it in with all the other cats (maybe six or seven at that time). It had a couple of good years and then died from cancer. They don't seem to become buddies like cats that are raised as kittens

52 My oldest cat, who I am trying to type "around" as I.. eh, type, is trying to prevent me from telling you all about his younger brother.

The youngest is the only cat I have that plays fetch! He confiscated a dish (bottle) brush, which has bristles, a furry top, and a long wire handle. It became his, and so therefore, no longer useful as a kitchen tool. So I got another one. He confiscated that one too.

Long story short, when he insists on it... and yes ye does insist, I am required to throw it as far as I can. He dashes after it, jumping over, under, and through whatever, to retrieve it, and come bounding back. He drops it and waits. I would say he never tires of this game, because often I have to tell him we have to stop, which he barely tolerates, but on a few occasions, he tired out before I did.

There are not many things more adorable to me in this world, than watching him bound back to me with that brush in his mouth, all proud of himself.

53 >>>>>> One February, I let them out. I didn't realize that their wireless
fence wasn't working. By the time I realized it, they were gone.
...We had a Miniature Scottie named Speck who was the master at defeating those invisible fences.

He would sit for hours in the one beep warning zone and wait for the battery to die, as soon as it quit beeping he went through the fence as fast as he could. It took us literally months to figure out what was going on. I would look out the window and see him running up the street or in the neighbors yard days after we put a fresh battery in his collar.

We kept going back to the fence company and asking for good batteries because we though they weren't fully charged when we got them in the mail from them. Back then there were specialty batteries for the collars, not sure if it still that way. They doubled our order but it still wasn't enough.

I finally watched him for a very long time one day out the window and when he thought I wasn't watching anymore he wandered over to the one beep zone and sat there for quite some time. I heard the collar beep once every 30-45 seconds and finally figured what he was doing.

59 Pigs will do that with electric fence. They test it a couple of times a day, just to see if it's on. If grass or weeds grow up around the fence, it can short it out.

62 We spent a lot of time and money to install one for the rottie because people seemed to get upset about her (silly me, I thought they were darned near bred for kids). She came to close to the tv inside the house and got a shock so that was the end for her. Tried again with the wild black lab -- he ignored all of it.

See, that's your problem right there. Thinking you could, would, or should "operate" the cat.

We had a calico, but not as fluffy as that one. I think someone just abandoned her because she seemed too friendly to be stray. She came to us during a blizzard when i was serving my first church. If the door of the church was open she'd often walk in and come down thew aisle. She also liked attending church meetings that I was even too crazy about going to. I often thought about putting her on the membership list, because with the name Cleo and my husband's last name who at my denominational office would have known she wasn't human?

70 Lurker Scott, thanks for sharing the newspaper boy story and deplorable lurker Bob, that was funny. Especially toward the end when he really gets going. LOL!

Coco is absolutely gorgeous and I want to know how you keep King Tut and Leffe to stay on the blanket that matches their fur color? My cats seem to hone in on anything with a contrasting color.

Sir Calvin looks quite regal. Love the extra fuzzy ears.

Caya is a little cutie.

Thanks for sharing Eppie Sue and Pablo's tale. She looks like she had a rough time while she was away from you. Glad she found her way back and now Pablo and Eppie are reunited.

Thanks MisHum and everyone who shares their photos and stories. I never miss this thread. Can't always comment, but always read.

77 Did some blue strip irrigation in the past. It goes together like tinker toys. Little emitters from 1/4 gallon per hour up. Also ran small tubing from the mail line with an emitter on the tip.

Hooked a battery timer at the tap and let it go.

Have fun.

Hah. Pious cat. But beware. It might be a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Always puzzled me that there are so few cat references in the Bible. The Egyptians had already domesticated cats by then to stop mice from eating their grain. You'd think they'd have been more widespread.

I think cats are the only species that can hate other members of the same species with the same intensity as humans. I once saw a kitten get petted by the woman who adopted him. When she walked away an older cat swatted him.

90 Notsothoreau - so sorry about Jack. I read about his problems a couple weeks ago and hoped he would improve. Jack being so young I'm sure makes you want to try everything you can. He knows he's loved by your attention to him and that is so wonderful.

My Biggie had similar problems, his inability to walk was sporadic, but getting worse (more than once a day). I was afraid to leave him alone 'cause he'd get up on a couch and then fall getting down or trip getting into his litterbox. But he was 19 years old when we finally had to let him go so we knew subjecting him to any fancy treatments too hard on him. Maybe he could have had a few more good days, but I was afraid of what could happen at night or while we were out. I didn't want him to die hurt or injured and alone. Was lucky to find a vet to come to the house so he was not scared.

Will keep you and Jack in my prayers.
