Game-Show Host of Who's Inside My Wife? Jeff Flake: Now That I'm Not Running For Office, Get This, I've Changed My Mind Completely On the Iran Deal

Huh -- a #FakeNews Republican changes his opinion to what it's always really been the moment he's not running for office. Who saw that coming, besides everybody.

(Except at the Weekly Standard, which still has a childlike faith in its heroes.)

Now that this loathsome traitor no longer is running for office, and only has to please whatever NeverTrump billionaire he winds up working for, he can repudiate his prior #FakeNews opposition to the Iran Deal.

Like John McCain, he evolves in office, then evolves a lot more when departing office.

59 PDT's speech today was commanding and befitting of a true Commander in Chief. Iran was officially put on notice. the small band of radicals that took over the country during the Carter Administration has grown into a massive conglomerate of terror inciting worldwide dominance. Trump put the fear of the Lord into the inward part of these men today...The good part is he means it. Israel is ready to pounce and is doing so as I type...

Posted by: Diogenese other brother Darrell at May 08, 2018 06:02 PM (ICWiF)

60 But opposition to the Iran deal was actually a very NeoCon position.

Remember, the NeverTrumpers told us Trump's big problem is he was an isolationist and was willing to turn a blind eye to our enemies. A true isolationist would go along with the Iran deal.

This is exactly the way Europeans deal with problems. Sign some stupid piece of paper so they can get back to selling Airbuses and Louis Vuitton handbags and kick the can.

Posted by: Polliwog the 'Ette at May 08, 2018 05:57 PM (rp9xB)

Search systematically.

1. Check that the monitor has power. For example, is its power light on? If you unplug the monitor and plug into the same outlet something you know works, does it have power?

If yes ...

2. Double check all the connections to the monitor. Disconnect and reconnect the power cable and the connection cable to the computer (do this for both ends of the latter).

Still no joy?

3. If you have another monitor, or can borrow one, plug it in and connect it to your computer. Does it work? If so, it's the monitor. If not, it's the computer.

Chances are #1 or #2 will fix the problem.

Btw, how old is the monitor?

Yep. I have an earnest liberal acquaintance who had a make-work sinecure for a public safety agency. Once he told me he couldn't do something that day because he had to prepare a "presentation to the board." I asked him how long the presentation was. Five minutes. FIVE MINUTES!

All day to prepare a five minute presentation?? I'd have knocked it together while walking up to the podium.

But from this and other stories I realized he's one of those guys whose work expands to fill the time available.

Trump is exactly the opposite. He knocks things out quickly because he knows what he thinks, pulls the trigger, then moves on to the next matter. In short, he's effective.

The problem with leaving the Iran deal is it was heavily loaded to benefit Iran on the front end. As long as the Europeans keep trading with them they won't feel a damn thing whether or not we back out. It's a symbolic act.

Now, maybe symbolism is what's called for here, but I don't know. It's going to have the effect of alienating us from the Europeans to an even greater extent than we've already become.

242 Ace's liver, first-order problem with the Iran deal was that there was any deal, period - as opposed to a continuation/tightening of the sanctions regime that had greatly damaged the mullahocracy. The "deal" was nominally about nukes, which it was sorta, but the real import was in jettisoning a decade's hard work that had started to bear fruit in terms of isolating and weakening the Tehran regime.

The US weakness/stupidity demonstrated by the deal was rocket fuel to a newly unleashed Iran (Yemen, Syria, Lebanon, Palestinians - Tehran ramped up their game in every one). Hence the radical Gulf Arab rapprochement with Israel, the growing Egypt-Jordan-Israel-Gulf Arab de facto (and literal) alliance against Persian hegemony.

This.

When I lived in Europe Europeans used to rant about how America didn't give them their due, etc., and failed to take their views into account. They clearly considered themselves to be oh so important.

I asked them their views on Bolivia's foreign policies. "Bolivia? Who cares what Bolivia thinks?" they replied.

"That's exactly how Americans think about Europe."

261 What the NeverTrumpers don't understand, is the more people like Flake, McCain and others who supposedly were conservatives - but "against" Trump - is that folks like us were right all along.

These folks were never really conservatives. They ran on the R ticket because they couldn't get elected on the D ticket - abortion, open borders, take your pick, because the Ds required blind allegiance. Now that they are on their way out, and coming out against R policies (be it Trump, Cruz on Obamacare filibuster or whatev), it, IMHO, actually hurts these NeverTrumpers. Sure, their ranks may be growing a bit, but they're growing by the wrong people. People who were always them.

The Charles de Gaulle is fine for its size, but it's old and tiny at 45k tons.

The Brits ran out of money for CATOBAR and put in a Russian-style ski jump. Ops tempo will be pretty paltry compared to what we're fielding, even on a ship-by-ship basis.

327 Except for signing a bad "continuing resolution" budget, which he promises not to do the next time the Demunists try it, I can't think of a major mistake "The Donald" has made.

That's his only stumble so far (aside from a few minor hiring errors), and it was a bad one, but not crippling. They all make mistakes.

Britain barely makes carriers. They are all little things about half the size of our ships.

And I honestly think the USA is too overextended in Global Policing as it is.

Maybe we could recreate The British Empire as an Anglosphere Empire, with us first among equals leading it, but get the rest to shoulder more of the burden? And see if the Frogs can police "The Continent" of Europe and Francophone Africa? Just spitballing here.

38 I was using my desktop when the monitor suddenly went off. Nothing changed in the tone of the computer, so I *think* it's the monitor and not the graphics card. The light is also not on or blinking for the monitor.

Used to have a monitor on which the power cable was vertical, going up. This meant that it was slowly falling out. About once a year or so, the monitor would go off and I'd have reach behind the thing and shove the cable back up into the power socket.

That being said, I've also had monitors suddenly quit. No power, no lights, nothing makes them come back on. But it's something to check.

Ze Force de Frappe is ze Piece de Crap.

I remember when that Libya thing was going on under Obama, the French were supposed to be flying regular sorties since their airbases were just across the pond. And the readiness numbers were published, and on any given day, an average of 75% of ALL of the aircraft in the French Air Force were classified as broken down waiting on parts.

75%!!!!

and that was a few years ago, no doubt their equipment is in even worse shape today. This is why there is no chance of Europe ever becoming a serious power again anytime soon - it would take decades and untold trillions of Euro's for them to get anything close to an effective military again.

341 Oh, and I didn't see your question at #4. I don't think I've talked about the last year and a half of adventures here at AOSHQ.

Anyway, summarizing: I lost my job, lost a lot of stuff, including some weight, got my job back part time, got evicted, did flood cleanup, got sick, would up having to go get surgery in Noo Awlins for valve replacement, eventually wound up working full time again, where things are slowly getting better, but not fast enough. Anyway, I was doing some work last week with some hydrotesting plug ("Look at how much better I am, this isn't killing me!") when my blood pressure spiked. I went to the local primary care physician who told me I should move up my appointment from the end of the month to sooner, (after changing my BP dosage), so... I called the hospital, and found out they can't do that. After being on hold a total of six hours yesterday.

So I'm dealing with the usual two steps forward and one step back stuff.

Sorry if that's all TMI.

They're not "allies" in any meaningful sense, for many important situations, including specifically Iran. They have always been part of the problem - not allies.

So talking about "alienating" them is just silly, besides being irrelevant. The Iran "deal", as I keep pointing out, was a disaster *mostly* not for anything to do with nukes, but because it jettisoned the structure of sanctions and pressure the US had laboriously built (mostly Dubya), *against* European irresponsibility and greed as its main challenges.

Given what may emerge from the Mega-Scandals (specifically UK intel involvement), even long-standing close relationships with certain "allies" may have to be re-evaluated. It's been 70 years - probably over-due anyway.

Well as Tom Servo points out above, the British design was specifically built for Harriers, they are short runways with a ski jump on the end like a cartoon (or a 1915 aircraft carrier conversion) that they can't fly anything off of right now.

There's no way in hell they have the resources or the will to build any military. Several people have pointed out why, above: it would require them to shuffle their budget away from the handouts and welfare. And they can't do that without riots and the government being violently deposed. Look at Greece, they tried to add a day back on to their work week and cities burned.

Yes but even assuming that could happen against all known evidence, that would result in European war, not a concern to us at all. I simply do not give a damn if Germany tries to take over Europe again. Knock your teutonic hearts out.

383 There's no way in hell they have the resources or the will to build any military. Several people have pointed out why, above: it would require them to shuffle their budget away from the handouts and welfare. And they can't do that without riots and the government being violently deposed. Look at Greece, they tried to add a day back on to their work week and cities burned.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at May 08, 2018 06:58 PM (39g3+)

National will is a funny thing. A few years of economic depression, a national incident in which they feel slighted, the right sort of demagogue in charge... things can turn quickly. What would make the Germans unusually dangerous in this respect is they retain all the heavy manufacturing and tooling capability we've lost in the US.

The Brits pretty openly admit that the NHS takes up all the money that used to go to the Military. Basically, they shut down and disbanded most of their military so they could pretend that they all had wonderful free health care. And they were confident that they could lean on the good old Uncle Sugar if they ever really need any help.

Now that I think of it, I can think of one thing that would infuriate the Brits so much that they would come out on the streets, ready to fight. Tell them they'll have to pay for their healthcare, it won't be free anymore. Also, raise the price of their booze. That's about the only two things I could ever imagine a Brit being willing to fight about these days.

And I will say this for the Frogs: while they are definitely NOT team players, they will, in their own way, make a stand.

Example: they would not go along with us when we gave Moe Quaddafi the bombing he needed in 1985. However, at the same time, when Moe was meddling in Chad, one of their former colonies, the Frogs did send troops to boot Moe and his goons out.

Sadly true. We have ceded many inner cities to savages, because "Waah! Rayciss!"

It is really getting to the point where more than a few "African Anti-Americans" should be told they have three choices:
1. Get with the American Dream program,

Have you been following the US Navy's attempt to build a new ship? Any ship? They recently cut a hurried contract to build more Arleigh Burkes (a 1991 design) because the Zumwalt is an overpriced failure. Before that it was the Littoral Combat Ship, which was so shoddy the welds started leaking before it was even underway.

We haven't had a new tank since 1980.

We've been building fighters, but the newest one is so expensive we can only afford a tiny fraction of the numbers we need, so the F-15 is being extended as an "arsenal plane".

So yes. We have lost a great deal of the manufacturing capability we once had. The new designs are grossly overpriced or underperforming or both.

The problem is we don't have a commercial sector to rely on like we did through the '70s. We used to have a vibrant commercial shipbuilding industry, but that's pretty much (if not completely) gone. Shipbuilding moved to Japan, then Korea, and then to China.

Can we solve the problem by throwing enough money at it? Maybe. I don't see much evidence, though.

The F-35 worries me more, though, because we have the commercial base and somehow weren't able to leverage it.
