Fine

I had a few ideas of what to do for this week. I was even tempted to use one of my backup posts that I'd already written. However, I knew that nothing would be good enough unless I talked about the movie du jour.

So be it.

Marvel

What Kevin Feige has built with the Marvel movie franchise is one of most important things Hollywood has produced financially for the industry since sound. Ten years and eighteen movies later, and the franchise is still going strong, dominating the box office with every film, and laying cultural landmarks that will probably last for a couple of generations, that is if the movies suddenly stopped being made today. Which they won't. And all the while, every major studio is breaking themselves to mimic what Feige seems to produce so effortlessly.

I don't know what Disney is giving Kevin Feige, but I imagine him able to hold out one hand, shout, "Hit me!" and a bag of cocaine automatically flies into his hand. And he probably deserves it considering how much his ability to wrangle a host of directors, actors, and storylines so effectively has made that company giant gobs of money (not to mention the cash from licensing).

Marvel is the great financial story of the industry (how many Best Picture Oscars has the Academy awarded the one franchise that's helping keep it financially afloat?), but I, personally, am not exactly a fanboy. I think that the movies fall into a narrow range of quality with some break outs (both up and down) here and there. They're mostly pretty good.

The Highs

There are two movies that I consider to be above the pack: Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Guardians of the Galaxy.

The second Captain America movie takes the Marvel version of Superman (perfectly decent American boy who also happens to be nearly indestructible…just no flying), and places him into a conflict where his priorities and values come into conflict with the authority system that he'd grown up to believe in. Cap was raised in the 30s and 40s and fought in World War II. Americans of that time tended to have great faith in the government and its ability to help people, so for him to suddenly face a creeping super state that's obsessed with espionage of its own citizens and extra-judicial killings is jarring. It's enough of a shock to his system that he actually ends up going rogue. That central conflict is great on its own, but there's so much more in the movie that deserves praise.

Cap's relationship with The Winter Soldier himself is great as well, with Cap's childhood friend needing to go through a similar type of self-reflection that Cap himself went through (although enhanced by some actual brainwashing). The plot is super tight and clips along at a great pace. There feels like there's no real fat on the movie, making it an efficient thrill ride. It's the one of the 17 I've seen (still haven't seen Black Panther) that I consider great.

Guardians is a relatively close second. It was the first of the Marvel movies to try and be distinct in terms of look and tone. It's funnier than any previous Marvel movie, and the first to be an ensemble piece that didn't rely on previously established characters. The emotional core of the movie is also pretty strong as the ragtag group of lowlifes learn to work together and become a kind of family. I keep it a step down from Cap's second adventure because of the generic bad guy and the fact that it plays out more conventionally that it probably should. Still, its sense of fun outweighs its more generic elements to rise above the rest of the Marvel movie pack.

The Lows

The two I find the least joy from are Thor: The Dark World and Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2.

The second Thor adventure is surprisingly bland with the most generic of bad guys (which is saying something considering this franchise), the most generic of plots, and the unnecessary use and promotion of secondary characters from the previous film. It took the weird Asgard stuff of the first movie and made it as bland as the Earth stuff from the first movie without giving Thor an opportunity to grow as a character. I don't really consider it bad, but it's just so bland and generic that it's not really worth visiting.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2 is mostly beloved by the Marvel fan community, but I just find it unfocused, shallow, and distractingly desirous for laughs while undercutting any of the choppy emotional work the movie does do. On top of that, Ego, the living planet, is a walking encyclopedia, simply explaining everything all the time without having much in the way of actual emotional interactions with people. It still looks as great as the first movie with all the weirdest of sci-fi ideas on display (Ego riding his ship is my cup of tea). It's also entertaining in individual moments, but I just never feel like those moments come together to form something cohesive because the movie is constantly undermining itself. I ultimately find it a frustrating experience.

The Next Adventure

So, this Infinity War thing is coming out, huh?

Dolley is sick beyond words of comic book movies and superheroes specifically, so we won't be going to see it in theaters. I'll probably have a chance in a few weeks to go on my own with a free ticket, so I might do that.

I'd imagine that some of you have already seen it. In terms of spoilers, I personally don't care about them (in fact, I already know how it ends because I was curious while on the john), but realize that there are others who might care, so just be considerate when discussing the film in the comments.

Personally, I'm more excited about the next movie in my Netflix Queue.

I've only watched a few of the Marvel movies and find them to be utterly tedious CGI wastes of time. Of course most movies are like that. Oh and fark Disney and Marvel

One of my brothers has the new Star War movie on DVD. What's it called the Diversity Jedi or something. I watched few minutes of it and all of the characters were so annoying I was hoping they'd all get zapped.

16 I think you have to put the original Iron Man as number 1 of Marvel. That movie is objectively great, had Jeff Bridges playing the villain, was Robert Downey Jr's best acting performance, and it changed the movie landscape for the next decade.

The trust with the bad guy feels unearned which undermines any emotional payoff, and the final battle is CGI nonsense.

It may be the feelz talking but it sounds like Marvel knocked it out of the park. I've never seen a marvel movie in theaters but I'm going to see this one this week. 31 Infinity War was bizarre. Had to, HAD TO, be the most expensive film ever made. Imagine if Michael Bay made a compelling and interesting action film with characters you care about and that's Infinity War. I was totally wiped out afterwards. I think it will become a classic superhero action film in time but it's almost too much. It is one act. It's a one act action film that is super long and never stops.

35 Movie Sign!

I saw "Rampage" this week and for a monster flick, it was better than it had to be. The Rock sells it no matter what he's in.

Because I am woefully unprepared for the upcoming Avengers movie, I rented "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and was surprised that I enjoyed it. It was more like a spy thriller in tights than a superhero story.

I fast forwarded any time Robert Redford's martian landscape of a face was on screen.

As regards cinematic telly, I binge-watched all my DVR'd eps of "The Terror", which has been fantastic. Much better than the herniatic novel IMHO, which was as much of a slog for me as it was the characters.

38 And that said, the topic of Marvel's movies and Kevin Feige deserves a more in-depth look/discussion. Or more so than I have time for here.

What the guy did is nearly a miracle, and a similar miracle was required to avoid Disney and Marvel comics fucking it up.

Feige managed to get comic books on the screen and managed to get it RIGHT, most of the time. I doubt God gets involved in the movie business but something had to happen on a near divine level for all those pieces to come together.

Here's hoping Infinity War part 1 is worth the build up.

I think what needs to happen here is for Thanos to WIN and win big. But we'll see...

I liked it. Jim Caviesal was wonderful of course. I thought it handled Scripture rather loosely. It was more that I don't enjoy the whole theater-going experience. People eating noisy wrapper things, talking thru 2/3rds of the movie, 20 minutes of stupid previews.

45 OK, not much time to stick around this eve...

GOTG 2, I liked it quite a bit, but I suspect it won't have staying power, like the first film.

I don't care, and have never cared about comic books. So... I generally don't care about the Marvel universe. It's all too convoluted for me at this point. The simpler the story, the more I'm going to like it, I think. So the Captain America movies are preferable to the Avengers conglomerations, for example.

Enough about that though.

Here are the films I have seen recently that I would absolutely recommend:

1. The Florida Project. It's just brilliant. Sad and sweet, and alarmingly realistic.

2. A Ghost Story. I don't care if anyone thinks it's pretentious. It's just gorgeous in its stillness, and the slow build of thoughtfulness behind it.

3. Dogtooth. Mentioned in an earlier thread. It's not new, Greek film, an allegory. Very graphic in its sexual subject, and some gruesomeness otherwise. Black black BLACK comedy. A family with adult children who have lived in a compound, in isolation from the rest of the world. Their perspective is, needless to say, warped.

Absolutely. And Eris is also right vis a vis Robert Redford in "Winter Soldier": His scenes are an utter waste of obvious non-twist. The only thing that really sticks with me about that movie is the flying aircraft carriers.

52 Not a movie, but Ridley Scott is Exective Producer on a series called Braindead available on Amazon Prime.

It's a comedy/scifi/political thriller which is an odd combo but actually is funny and seems to take a lot of joy in skewering both sides. Don't expect a lot of accuracy on the political organization (for example a Senate vote has about 130 total votes) but just roll with it, it's fiction.

so sure, maybe 50 years from now "guardians of the galaxy" will be on screens somewhere at 5 in the a.m.

69 Not a movie, but Ridley Scott is Exective Producer on a series called Braindead available on Amazon Prime.

It's a comedy/scifi/political thriller which is an odd combo but actually is funny and seems to take a lot of joy in skewering both sides. Don't expect a lot of accuracy on the political organization (for example a Senate vote has about 130 total votes) but just roll with it, it's fiction.

71 I liked it. Jim Caviesal was wonderful of course. I thought it handled Scripture rather loosely. It was more that I don't enjoy the whole theater-going experience. People eating noisy wrapper things, talking thru 2/3rds of the movie, 20 minutes of stupid previews.

I was hoping it was in 8-bit but it was in glorious face-melting CGI. My friend, who played the game as a lad and was therefore super amped about it, said it followed the "story line" fairly well.

Maleen Ackerman is a surprisingly good villainess.

78 Yeah, the second Thor film was a big disappointment. I have Simonson's entire run in hardback, and the Malekith story was a big reason for that purchase. Plus a former Doctor in that role -- a can't miss!

I think I fell asleep during the show, and I don't think I missed anything.

As for GotG II, I enjoyed it but thought Ego's exposition smacked too much of a museum tour. Could have been trimmed, saving 20 minutes.

Of the others, I liked most of them. Iron Man III was too much like Lethal Weapon -- it takes too long to type in quote marks, so they're omitted today -- and IM II needed to keep the first part with Whiplash and ditch the rest. I fell asleep during Avengers II, and Civil War was great until the final confrontation when the dramatic pause took me out of the movie; I dislike a break in action during combat scenes.

Loved Ant-Man. I think that sets me apart from the rest if the world.

Still, we comics geeks of a certain age can remember how cool it was when Spider-Man had a live-action TV show, even though the plots and SFX were shoddy at best. Now we piss and moan about the movies that have followed. Never satisfied, are we?

The term "B" movie has a specific technical meaning: It refers to movies that the studios would put as the second feature on a bigger budget film.

See, you sell tickets to a double-feature and since you can't know what the patrons paid for, you split the money evenly down the middle. The studio gets a bigger piece of the "B" pie and voila, you've cheerfully screwed your artists out of their share.

Nowadays it's just any non-AAA feature.

81 Perhaps more on topic, Legion on FX is a Marvel joint. I guess I would call it Xmen adjacent. I don't do comic books to know if it is from there, it is grade A weird but the visuals in the cinematography are outstanding. There aren't any big stars so they put the money into production values. It has to be very expensive.

The story is non-linear and slow, but actually well thought out.

B movie doesn't really refer to a budget, but how theaters used to show movies.

The A movie was the attraction and shown first. The B movie was shown second and was typically genre related.

So, when I call The Revenant a B movie, I mean that it's really no more than a genre flick (revenge and survival) without any real depth to it, the sort of story that would normally populate the bottom half of a double bill.

88 Rewatched Mindhunter this week because of the serial killer post. 10 times better the second time. Lots going on in a movie based on psychology, motivations, and behavior science.

I love those films and shows that scratch that area of your brain that tells you more is going on than what appears on the surface. Eyes Wide Shut for example.

I have nothing much to say about movies this week. I watched "Casablanca" again for the 15th time or so and enjoyed it - as always. There are few movies that I want to watch more than once and very few that I can watch multiple times. But whenever I see that Casablanca is on, I turn it on and am mesmerized again within a a few minutes.

I can't say I liked the song, but I loved what they did with it. Her reaction, both at first... and after.

People complain about the pie eating scene. Saying it goes on too long. Well... it was so absolutely crucial to the overall concept here, about time, the mundane, how each of us experience it, depending on where we are in the grand scheme.

91 So many of the contemporary superhero outfits are so dark and almost monochromatic. Even the more colorful costume are flatter shades of those colors. Years from now, viewers will scratch their heads at them the way people today laugh at the brightly colored superhero costumes of yesteryear.

It was a 99cent rental so I didn't feel like I had paid too much for it. Bishop lived through the ordeal so there might be another one.

"London has fallen" - had to pay full price to buy it. There were a lot of bullets and some explosions. I thought there were several improbables that were jarring, like where are the people? The streets should be full of people. Of course, they couldn't do what they did with extras in the way, so ... no people.

I would call it a 'B' movie, good enough if you can find a dollar matinee and have time to kill.

Aliens send ships, to Earth! Oh no!!! Except... it's not that kind of movie. It's intelligent, with the main character being a linguist. And talk about music being such an integral part of the experience.

Max Richter composed the music, and he's also responsible for the music from the show, The Leftovers. Very evocative.

Amy Adams, as she does in every movie she's in, steals the show.

I can't stand musicals, generally. There have only been a precious few good musicals - in all of human history. Pretty much the only half-decent Broadway musical was The Magic Show.

122 B movie doesn't really refer to a budget, but how theaters used to show movies.

The A movie was the attraction and shown first. The B movie was shown second and was typically genre related.

So, when I call The Revenant a B movie, I mean that it's really no more than a genre flick (revenge and survival) without any real depth to it, the sort of story that would normally populate the bottom half of a double bill.

I agree with most of that except the budget. When a movie has the budget, it can hire the 'A' list actors, like DiCaprio. If you got DiCaprio on the marquee, that is not the film rounding out the bottom half of the double feature.

I read an interesting review about a new frog movie which makes merciless fun of director Jean-Luc Godard for his left-wing pretentiousness. It has not been received well by the the French film establishment, or that citadel of left-wing pretentiousness, the NY Times. Godard is reportedly furious about it. Fine by me, since I find his movies unbearably boring.

I think as time goes by people will recognize that Rodgers wrote waltzes better than even Johann Strauss did. West Side Story is the absolute peak of Musical Theatre in the 20th century, nothing before or after hits everything as perfectly as that one did. And c'mon, even though Brigadoon is silly, it's still loads of fun to listen to. As are most of the Lerner and Lowe's musicals.

No, I'm not sure what you are referring to. This movie came out in 2016. It's actually called "Arrival," no 'the' in the title, so maybe there are two movies of similar names.

Denis Villeneuve directed, and I have to say he's got to be one of the best in the business these days.

I don't do comic books to know if it is from there, it is grade A weird but the visuals in the cinematography are outstanding. There aren't any big stars so they put the money into production values. "Legion" is flat-out great TV.

Plus, it's a show that refuses to spoon feed you. It actually treats the audience as intelligent.

The first season is so weird and so wonderful and so well-done that I thought it would just explode into the public conscience.

Nope.

The second season so far has been very good if not as mindblowingly awesome.

I think it's basically the middle act so certain plot mechanics have to occur.

Sadly, the rating for "Legion" are vanishingly small.

So, that third season where it all comes together may not happen.

But, what am I worried about? It's not like FOX to cancel awesome series out of the blue midseason and all.

170 The first 45 or so minutes....the first act....of Iron Man I is some of the finest storytelling I've ever seen. Just....ever. The second act was really fun. The last act...wasn't bad, but it had no chance of living up to what preceded it. And I still think that it's a crying shame that we never got the Mandarin that that movie promised us.

Infinity War was.....intense. But as someone said, was just a first/second act. The finish...isn't really a finish. And I'm a bit miffed at the post-credit scene. That was not a story that I care about! Show me a teaser about the characters that I'm so desperately vested in! ....Something about them! ....Anything about them!

188 Avengers is becoming tiresome, and I think it's because they use the same old cast every single time. It's similar to fatigue that comes from stations overplaying rock songs. I'm not sure I could stand the sight of them all yet again.

At least DC periodically changes their Batman and Superman actors. Whatever you think of Affleck personally, he wasn't a bad Batman. And at least in Batman vs Superman there was some real tension since both sides had vulnerabilities and you didn't know who would come out on top, unlike Captain America vs Ironman, a yawnfest since both are basically indestructible. The final fight is probably the best, most fun, action sequence (well, okay top five anyway) in a Marvel movie as they zap back and forth through dimensions.

Yeah, admittedly the girlfriend scenes were a stone cold drag, and-

if they'd kept going with that domesticated Thor stuff, Ragnarok would've been about Thor as an incompetent stay home Dad changing baby diapers.

But, on the plus side, that might've given us Marvel's version of "Lone Wolf and Cub"-

with Thor decapitating Ice Giants and blood geysers shooting from their necks.

193 Husband and son dragged me to the Avengers 2 movie. I hate comic books so the movies were not something I wanted to see. They told me Joss Whedon directed the Marvel movies because I loved Firefly. So I went and it was enjoyable. But I have promised myself and them that I never have to see another superhero movie ever again. I never saw Batman or Superman or any of the comic book movies. Not that I hate them, but they bore me and I don't know the timeline that explains everything.

194 If the deal goes through - X-Men and FF will revert back to Marvel Studios (Since Disney is possibly buying all of Fox Movie rights).

The constant need for Spider Man and FF reboots was to keep it in the hands of the studios who had the rights. The sharing of Spider Man by Sony with Marvel (i.e. Disney) was a deal where all Spider-verse movies reside in the MCU but are not going to be seen outside Sony produced SM movies (i.e. Venom will not be in any Marvel Studio/Disney movies).

206 Winter Soldier is probably the best 'movie' of the lot. It has characters, but also a story that fits those characters. It feels tight and moves and flows very well.

The more I think about Guardians 2, the more a mess of some good scenes and... other stuff.

I think the root to any of these movies is understanding what is good and great about the character. The Cap movies (with the exception of the third) did that. The rest of them, it seems like they do not understand the appeal of the characters and hence cannot show that.

215 Perhaps more on topic, Legion on FX is a Marvel joint. I guess I would call it Xmen adjacent. I don't do comic books to know if it is from there, it is grade A weird but the visuals in the cinematography are outstanding. There aren't any big stars so they put the money into production values. It has to be very expensive.

The story is non-linear and slow, but actually well thought out.

The deal with musicals is that you only see them if you like the music - they're not about plot, or even characters. Those are just vehicles that exist to give a loose story structure for the songs. (I'm not as much of a dance guy, but some people are) So if you go into it wanting a good story, you'll usually be disappointed (but I thought Evita and West Side Story did even that part well; c'mon, WSS is just Romeo and Juliet)

Watching a musical is like cuing up an old favorite album. Now if you never liked that album, there's no point listening to it.

221 It might be interesting to talk about how actors age--well, or not well. Redford was really good-looking. Didn't age well. Bruce Willis was a punk. Has become consistently more watchable. Leo Dicaprio was unwatchable for me for many years. My son bugged me to try this, try that. I couldn't believe a story told by anybody who looked like that. But now--I'm not saying he looks like a nice person, but he looks like a heavyweight. I suspect he'll become like Jack Nicholson, who I also found unwatchable in his early stuff. But as he continued, there were movies only he could carry. I suspect the same will be true of Dicaprio.

Our office comics nerd is going to storyboard the timeline for us before we go as a group to see the flick.

In a way, I am the best suited for this genre: I am neither a noob who will be thoroughly at sea, nor am I a fangrrl who will nitpick all the changes and timeline/story arc compressions. I have a nodding familiarity with it and can just let it wash over me and appreciate the experience.

I saw the original Captain America and thought it was good. Have not seen the sequel..

Thor original was pretty good.. good acting.. Anthony Hopkins! The second one was a disappointment... never watched any more.

The second Avengers movie was CGI nirvana for CGI geeks..

This actually can be said of every genre of movie, if you replace "songs" with "car chases" (action flicks in the Fast & Furious vein), "fights" (superhero movies), big dramatic monologues/emoting scenes (Oscar-bait movies), "sex scenes" (porn), "jokes" (comedies), etc.

But musicals like "South Pacific" and "The Pajama Game" took on social issues--oh, and "West Side Story" of course. And in many musicals the music is woven deeply into the story in a way that the plot and characters are very much dependent on the music and/or dance, like "The Music Man" and "Guys and Dolls" or "The Band Wagon".

295 I am a huge Marvel fan. I grew up in the 70's and 80's and comic books were a huge thing then and Marvel was light years ahead of DC at the time. Well, Marvel Pictures has only made one Spider-Man flick and that was "Spider-Man: Homecoming". The 5 other movies were made solely by Sony pictures and they still own the movie rights to the character and so got the profits from "Homecoming" as well. Very different movies, both tough (well duh, Stalingrad).

One thing in the recent movie that strikes me as extremely difficult to believe was the bit about an unspoken "etiquette" that the Soviet soldiers didn't shoot German soldiers getting water from the only water source (which was exposed) in their little area of stand-off. I've been surprised before, but I'd be surprised if anything like that situation ever existed between those armies, in that battle - whereas comparable things act uallyhappened on the western front all the way to the end.

One of the top war movies ever made. It's not as artistic as The Thin Red Line, Lawrence Of Arabia or Apocalypse Now... but it's intense, gripping story is told and shot so well it's up there. Not quite a masterpiece, but damn, it's a gruelling soldier's eye view of Stalingrad and can't be topped in it's own right.

One thing in the recent movie that strikes me as
extremely difficult to believe was the bit about an unspoken
"etiquette" that the Soviet soldiers didn't shoot German soldiers
getting water from the only water source (which was exposed) in their
little area of stand-off. I've been surprised before, but I'd be
surprised if anything like that situation ever existed between those
armies, in that battle - whereas comparable things act uallyhappened on
the western front all the way to the end.

I doubt that as well. BS on "etiquette" on the Eastern Front. I also doubted that American GI's would have let a captured German go so he could rejoin his unit and kill more Americans. The first half hour of "Saving Private Ryan" was among the most powerfully intense half hour of film I've ever seen. But after I thought about the film as a whole a bit, I had problems with certain things in it. The release of the German soldier was one of them.

You can tell it's BS because at the end the Navy says "hmm, gosh, we can see both sides of this issue" instead of turning into a claymore mine packed with Letters of Reprimand and reductions in rate and just boning everyone in sight including people who just happen to be wandering through the NEX across the street to pick up some cigarettes.

354 What otho said - about the 1993 German "Stalingrad". Pretty intense. The (pretty accurate) depiction of the "rat war" in the sewers and basements was memorable.

Speaking of the same general subject, the first segment of "Enemy at the Gates" has merit, in that it accurately conveys the desperation, brutality, and intensity of the Stalingrad battles at the peak. Some say it is the eastern front equivalent of the first 15 minutes of "Private Ryan", and that's not a ridiculous observation, considering what's available on film (so far). Have always thought a depiction of any of dozens of intense eastern front battles done with the skill of the Omaha beach scenes would be even more epic, if done accurately.

358 The Revenant was annoying because of all the politically correct Elizabeth Warren bullshite. The bear scene was funny though. The bear attacks him from behind while he's face down, and based on the rhythms of DiCaprio and the bear, it really does look like the bear is raping him in the rear.

Interesting aside, if you're the kind of person who prefers to see movies with the original dialog soundtrack: all the actors in Das Boot spoke perfectly good English, so the dubbed English track is done by the actual cast themselves.

Also, my kids introduced me to The Disaster Artist about the making of a very bad film called The Room. I'd seen The Room when Riff Trax gave it the business, so I kinda knew it. The Disaster Artist has a sort of Ed Wood vibe to it. I recommend it.

Kajaki: The True Story, released in North America as Kilo Two Bravo, is a 2014 British war docu-drama film directed by Paul Katis, written by Tom Williams, and produced by Katis and Andrew de Lotbiniere.

The plot is based on the true story of Mark Wright and of a small unit of British soldiers positioned near the Kajaki dam, in Afghanistan.

THIS is good war movie and pretty intense.

373 Eris I think he just survived the war, wasn't captured (few U-boat crewmen were). Ask Capt. Charles next time you see him around here.

One exception to the generalization above: in a rare but quintessentially American deviation from Geneva rules, when the US captured U-505 a day before D-Day, and its crew, no notification was passed to the Red Cross. The crew was kept separate from all other POWs, and a special camp built for them, where they did not have mail privileges. Idea being that the Germans did not know a U-boat had been captured intact, and of course that's the sort of info you really want to deny an enemy.

about flesh eating cockroaches.

Basically, it's JAWS with cockroaches, until-

the last 30 minutes when it goes completely KooKooBananas as only the best horror movies do -

as the roaches begin to mutate using the DNA of their human victims.

Just bonkers and well worth the watch. esp. The Roach Queen!

And.....BONUS!!! All the efx are Practical and very well done. Not a pixel of CGI in sight.

383 OT, a bit, but the only U-boat captured in the war is on display in the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. I toured it recently and it is huge! Like a football field long, just enormous. I had no idea they were so large.

I've mentioned here the tale of a neighbor, Konrad. When they got too old they moved in closer to their daugther, and Konrad passed away last year.

Anyway, he was a crewman on a U-boat, that was sunk. He spent the rest of the war in a POW camp in Georgia. He liked it so much here he didn't want to leave, and spent the rest of his time when they sent him home working on coming back here.

That always struck me. The only country where the POWs have it so well, they want to stay.

He basically lived the life of Riley compared to what it was like on the U-boat. They didn't even need to be guarded. Happy they were. Hell, the officers were treated like royalty.

U-505 is a Type IX, so it's much bigger than what comes to mind when you think "U-boat". The more common one was the Type VII, which was much smaller. It's the one you see in most of the pictures.

Smaller. The Type IX was the larger of the two big U-boat classes, and it's smaller than a Balao-class fleet boat. That said, the US fleet boats had to traverse the Pacific, so they needed more fuel and provisions, plus 4 diesels vs. 2 for speed and redundancy. Not to mention a/c and the ice cream machine.

Seems the only real problem in German POW camps, which usually eventually reached a climax and got resolved by separation, was the tension between the majority, and the true-believers/Nazis. Otherwise, as you say, minimal security, sometimes very good relations with the American farmers they worked for and their guards, and lots of guys staying or coming back as immigrants later.

459 Wow. Winter Soldier did nothing for me. I enjoyed the first two Tobey Maguire Spiderman movies, the first Iron Man movie, and the first Avengers movie, but then started getting superheroed out. I liked the first Guardians of the Galaxy but haven't seen the second yet. I tried Winter Soldier and simultaneously didn't like it and forgot most of the details from it about five minutes after it was over. I actually had to look it up to make sure you were lauding the same film I loathed.

462 I saw Infinity War and liked it a lot. I've been a comics fan for years, and that probably colors my judgement. That being said, the film juggled an lot of characters and did it pretty well. What I wanted that I didn't get was more Dr. Strange. I think Cumberbatch is a great fit for that character.

Why do I go see them now that I'm 29?

Mainly for the escapism. The rest of the world is a mess. At least, for a couple of hours, I can immerse myself in a world where a battle of good vs. evil is clearly defined.

Unlike many of you, I've been a comics fan for most of my life. My first career plan was to write or draw for DC or Marvel. (Life had other plans.) The movies, for the most part, are the characters as I knew them, before the lefties had to stick political statements into almost every issue (it's why I quit buying books years ago).

I can enjoy these films and still appreciate movies like Casablanca, To Kill A Mockingbird, The Searchers and others that will stand the test of time.

WWI-vintage boats (in all navies, really) got shuffled into training or coastal duty as soon as longer-ranged ones were available. The VII didn't have the range of the IX, but it doesn't need to if it's only patrolling in the North Atlantic and not ranging all the way to the US east coast.

Check out "Dead Man" just rereleased on blu-ray by Criterion.

It's a Jim Jarmusch movie with Johnny Depp(before he got all Deppified), so you know it will be oddball,

The type XXI was bigger, but it was the only significant production of a u-boat type during wartime that was. The Type X was bigger than the IX and was produced early in the war, but only a handful were made and it was a prewar design... IIRC. The Type XXIII was a wartime model, but it was small. All the others were prewar models.

538 Until just a few years ago, in the right-most lane of southbound I-5 at Del Mar (north San Diego area), you could still see part of the big white circle on asphalt that surrounded one of the docking masts for Navy dirigibles based there during the war. Was taken out as part of a wetlands restoration - there was barely any sign of the old air station still left, it had never been preserved in any way. Anti-submarine patrols. Right near the horse track that's still there.

And of course the enormous dirigible hangars up at Tustin, not far from Disneyland, are still there - and have often been used by Hollywood (the interior spaces) for movie shoots. Years ago I met a guy who was on the board of the foundation to preserve one of them as a national monument (already has the designation, I think). He said there was a slight hurdle - first estimate at minimal repairs to make the unique, wood-and-cable buildings safe was ..... $1M. Kinda harsh for a new, shoe-string foundation.

I like your thinking. I took AmTrak about a decade ago and honestly enjoyed the experience. It's not cramped like an airplane and it simply seems more relaxed.

What's killing train travel is the cost. You can't charge airline prices for current train speeds. Plus the routes are so limited now that it makes it difficult to use.

I don't like flying but blimps would be cool.

This time, there won't be any wind shear! In the future, thunderstorms will be limited by law!

And that is why Germans are still associated in the common mind with airships. A handful of talented and well-paid professionals spent a whole career keeping "The Z Word" in circulation.

Yep, all of those. It doesn't save any money - it actually costs more for cross-country than the equivalent airfare, though your meals are included if you get a sleeper. And the longer time-of-travel would be fine, if you could count on arriving within six hours of the scheduled time, but Amtrak isn't very good at that (I know it's in part due to sharing rails with freight traffic but the result is still the same). And half the time your route has you on a bus for hours - if I wanted to ride a bus, I'd get a bus ticket.

We once took Amtrak to San Antonio. The train constantly had to slow down to allow for slower freight trains. Even worse, a suicide jumped in front of the train on the return trip. We were stopped for four solid hours. Didn't get to the destination station until 1 a.m. Then we still had to drive home.

If you want to take the train, make sure you don't have deadlines.

575 I returned last week from spending two weeks at what was once the Navy's Hawaiian blimp field, now Barbers Point USCG. They have the world's greatest bar, very good very long runways, several buildings that clearly date back to the "sea of masts" era, and hundreds of acres of overgrown fenced and bunkered open ground that is spooky enough to get you working on that novel again. Also the incredible Nimitz Beach cottages.

There's a hawt golf course on one boundary, and the mall that will be the terminal of the light-rail-to-nowhere on another. I figure that if and when that opens, all that historical land will go to development real fast. Love to see, at a minimum, the Fleet historians get in there for one more artifact sweep -- and they probably will, given that there had to be some real exotic munitions bunkered there at different times.

This had to do with the Fascist economic model: to get allotted a piece of the limited resources you had to produce for the Reich, and to get lots of resources you had to have a really interesting design. Also, as a designer, to keep out of the Army and getting shot at by Russians you had to develop something really forward thinking that only you could shepherd through development.

Add to this the tendency of the industrial firms and the highest brass to empire build by developing something another company was working on but doing it for another branch of the service, meant lots of different approaches were being made.

When I took the kids to see Kubo and the Two Strings, the preshow show was a concert played by a couple of guys playing shamisens. It was very interesting.

580 A lot of negative opinions about movie tastes. Especially by the writer of this article. Got news for you Entertainment Einstein's, Marvel/DC is an entertainment vehicle targeted at kids. Given the amount of revenues generated by Marvel/DC, absent this, Hollywood would need to shutter its doors. You Entertainment Einstein's are classic whiners and really believe your opinions matter - LOL! It's about the money morons/moronettes - reality.
