Not seen here: My latest finished DIY project, postponed due to an April illness courtesy of my little girl.

I'm not sure what it is, but I'm at the stage where my teeth and hair follicles hurt. I won't tell you what else hurts, because I'm a gentleman.

A retired Chicago police officer shot and killed a male attacker who tried to carjack him in the Bridgeport neighborhood Wednesday night, authorities said.

The retired officer was in a vehicle in the 2900 block of South Shields Avenue about 7:20 p.m. when three males went up to the car and one pointed a gun at him and demanded the vehicle, police said in a media notification.

The retired officer then shot the gunman in the upper body, police said.

A noted historian once said we know much much more detail about Ancient Rome than we do the American Old West. It has to do with the lack of record keeping and the extreme political biases of newspapers in the Old West.

Laying in bed I was thinking about various types of liberals who considered themselves elites and wondering about the differences in attitudes between them and people I like and believe in.

I think it comes down to liberal elitist considers freedom as "no-one can exploit me" where as the classic liberal considers freedom as "no-one owns me"

If you consider exploitation to be an inescapable fact of life, like say lice or hookworm, then your focus will be on deflecting exploitation attempts by others, and if not actually participating in it on your own victims, you have no real concern about "legitimate" targets for others because they suck up attention that you would otherwise get; any free association outside of this framework might make the "legitimate" targets to hard to get at, and you yourself might wind up being the soft target instead. So cooperating and attempting to co-opt the power structure is a good method for staying unexploited - or at least keep it to acceptable levels, and you can always hope to be eaten last.

If you consider self ownership to be the main purpose of life, you strive to create a system where people can be free, and look to both protect others' rights since that is a way to protect your own. Anyone can be free if they live on a deserted island or go out into the middle of the forest and live alone, but that accomplishes very little and eventually the coyotes will chew your bones.
To be free in society also means to work freely with each other and build and get rich off of those free associations. It is important to resist exploitation since that means you are being stolen from, and it becomes important to protect others freedoms since once the forces that exploit the soft target and co-opt the rest have finished that little task, they have no better target than you.

So, anyhow, I think I get to start the azithromycin today, and hope this three week headache goes away.

The newly-cut lawn is nevertheless littered again already with seedy dandelions which will not be defeated. Pecans are finally budding out.

When I went for my pre-dawn walk, I was spotted by a pair of white tails. They froze. I waved. After a couple of seconds, one and then the other started to run. In my squeaky babies-and-animals voice, I loudly said, "Hey!" (felt like I was channeling the "this is lib'ary" guy) and they both froze. I said, "It's just me. It's okay," and proceeded to continue my walk. They pondered that a few moments, then turned and flashed their white tails, and hopped a little bit further away, but did not run and jump over the wall into the woods.

See, they know how to do this, what is it to them to give false praise to a defeated past opponent as a means to defeat a present opponent? It is basic strategy.
