The Morning Rant

talking ape.jpg
"So President Trump said 'screw you' to the press and blew off the White House Correspondents' Dinner. Instead, he went to a rally in Michigan and he told the cheering crowd that he'd rather with them rather than back in Washington DC with 'those guys'. Trump asked the crowd, why should he waste an entire evening with people who obviously hate him, and, by extension, them? Normal Americans have long known this, which is why the MSM's ratings are lower than Joe Biden's IQ. But this is the first time they've had someone that high in office who can see it, too. This is why they like Trump. He Gets It."

Even some reporters are saying that the WHCD was a disaster and a 'gift' to Trump:

17 So, I don't understand the point of the WHCD. They claim I raises money for charity? or scholarships?

Who wants to accept a scholarship from nothing but a bunch of not just partisan hacks but from nasty, often semi illiterate, uncurious, drones whose entire job description is to advance a progressive agenda like good propagandists, instead of actually reporting news or ferreting out story details and facts?

Only the David Hoggs of the world.

Ed Henry was beside himself this morning on Fox. He was once president of this group of dimwits and is so upset over last night.

Hello, Ed, where have you been for the past five years? When Obama was in the WH, it was all light and sweetness from the press. Nothing annoys me more than the justification for Soviet communism because Tsarist Russia was supposed to be some hopelessly backward impoverished hellhole. Grab some kawfee.

So, we attended a weekend-long event for a service organization my husband belongs to and that I've been active in. We've personally hosted three foreign students over the past 10 years through the group. It's a wonderful, worthwhile group, and now our son have joined the college organization and is an officer.

Well, one of the guest speakers is an ambassador from Norway. He was a sponsored student 50 years ago here in GA, and was to speak to all the hosted students about what it meant to him, and how fortunate they are to receive a year of free education here.

He proceeded to:

* Make a disparaging comment about PDT

* Lecture us about the evil Joos and Israel and the "peaceful" Palis

* Lecture us about "global warming" and informed us all that the island we were on will be under water in another 50 years.

* Speak about the evils of coal and......airplanes

* Praised Jimmy Carter to the skies

* Praised the anti-gun babies and their marches

* Urged the US to insist PDT join in the Paris climate accord

You could feel the rage in the room. We would have walked out, but one of our students was due to speak next, after the Norwegian Asshole ate up 10 minutes of his time.

Next morning, my husband said, "Guess who I had to sit across from at breakfast? The asshole. I didn't 'go there' but asked him about a large Norwegian company I'm familiar with in my dealings with the Port. He'd never heard of it. I informed him, 'It's the largest manufacturer of ship-to-shore cranes in the world.' He just looked blank."

If I think of more stuff about the douche I'll post it here.

How many times have you heard a woman exclaim that she's being "bad" when she orders fattening food, as if eating french fries is a moral failing? If we were more confident, or heard fewer messages about how we had to look a very specific way, would we go after more that makes us happy? Probably.

========

If fat shaming gets women to eat healthier, then it's a good thing. And they will be happier in the long run if they eat healthier. They'll get fresh produce at Kroger's instead of junk food.

79 Remember the Dean Martin Roasts? All good satire has a bit of truth to it, without being mean and nasty.

The problem today is that the media and the left is so nasty and hateful the vast majority of the time that in order to stand out, a comedian or one liner jokester has to go way beyond what any normal person would consider edgy.

Weird Al Yankovic's many videos are funny because they poke fun at modern society without being nasty or truly insulting to the subject. He has said in interviews that he refuses to swear or to directly attack an individual in his parodies. And it works.

But he is one of the tiny minority of comedic/musical acts that has not just restraint , but actual sense of 'do unto others".

"Trump haters routinely say they can't stand his [Trump's ] bullying. his pettiness. his gratuitous attacks. So they respond with bullying, pettiness and gratuitous attacks directed not only at him but at anyone who supports him, even tepidly or silently."

90 79 Remember the Dean Martin Roasts?

The interpretive narration of the Marianas Turkey Shoot, complete with correct-to-period camouflage schemes on the model planes and sound effects, along with the expert commentary concerning the perfidy the size requirements wrought upon the poor Helldiver designers at Curtiss, would be epic.

Of course, only dogfights above the cloud layer (i.e. bubbles) would be shown, to keep things manageable.

It also went to show what a fucking clueless idiot Dubya was.

Bush Sr had the benefit of being "roasted" by Dana Carvey, whose imitations were apolitical and benign, so I imagine Dubya thought the same thing. Despite the rage of the 2000 election and the sheer hatred against him he had absolutely no clue just how much people despised him and was taken completely by surprise when Colbert made his vicious attacks on him at the WHCD. Totally clueless.

Since then he only seems to find his stones when it comes to criticizing Trump.

Posted by: regular joe at April 30, 2018 11:53 AM (O50yS)

I am so stressed out today. Our nearly 17 y.o. kitty has become so picky about eating she's nearly wasting away. Her blood work is all fine (although she's on thyroid meds) and I've actually had to ask our kitty sitter (a former vet tech) how she and her boyfriend would feel about burying our poor girl in the side yard under a crepe myrtle tree if she dies suddenly while we're away. She's assured me they wouldn't have a problem.

I've got a funeral reception for a non-member of our church this week, and trying to prepare to leave this weekend for our first vacation in two years.

I can't stand the thought of losing our old girl. She snuggles against me every night, and since losing our other kitty, she craves our affection. I'm so sad.

/Rant on
These comparisons of Russia vs. whatever that show how badly their economy is doing, how low their per-capita income is, how small their...whatever is are making me very angry!! Very Angry Indeed!!

Why? Because while all these pundits talk about how badly Russia is doing economically, they have no trouble operating effectively in the Middle East and elsewhere, no trouble supporting surrogates like those in Ukraine, and most of all no trouble beefing up their military with weapons new aircraft designs and weapons that are designed to negate our capabilities (networked systems like Blue Force Tracker and others). A few years ago the ruble was going to collapse. Yup, that forecast was right on the money. It's like someone is saying "Oh, ignore them. They'll never be able to do anything." Why would someone say that?*
A better comparison would be what the Russians get for each monetary unit of GDP. I'll bet their PAK-50 / SU-57 fighter program, once in production, will be cheaper and much more capable than the F-35.
/Rant off

304 212 120 Weird Al Yankovic's many videos are funny because they poke fun at modern society without being nasty or truly insulting to the subject. He has said in interviews that he refuses to swear or to directly attack an individual in his parodies. And it works.

One exception: His parody of "Smells Like Teen Spirit' really attacked and mocked Nirvana and their music and Cobain's vocals as being garbage. I thought it was surprisingly mean-spirited coming from Al, who usually doesn't go that route.

===============

Kurt Cobain didn't take it that way. Appaently he thought the song was funny and was eager to have Weird Al cut a parody of one of this songs. He viewed it as a sign that he had made it to the big time. "Nevermind" wasn't exactly Cobain's favorite album FWIW.

379 In terms of PR, Russia is punching way above it's weight because the US and Europe have been allowing them to - actually the Euro's have been cheering them and encouraging them all the way.

With respect to some of those items:

"Why? Because while all these pundits talk about how badly Russia is doing economically, they have no trouble operating effectively in the Middle East and elsewhere"

What they are doing is giving political and material support to two nasty regimes there who love it, and until recently nobody in the west has been willing to do squat about it. So Russia makes a profit from selling weapons for oil money, and pays no price because the US and Europe allow them to.

no trouble supporting surrogates like those in Ukraine"

Ukraine has turned into a quagmire that soaks up precious hard currency while producing nothing of actual benefit to Moscow. Same thing goes for Crimea - sure, they got it, but it's a money pit with no viable industries and a population that has to be supported. Crimea was strategically important in 1854 and 1944 - but now it's just an unimportant backwater. Congratulations Putin, you won the white elephant.

and most of all no trouble beefing up their military with weapons new aircraft designs and weapons that are designed to negate our capabilities (networked systems like Blue Force Tracker and others).

They boast about their designs, but they don't have the financial or industrial capacity anymore to produce anything more than a few test models. The Russians can't do big production runs of anything anymore. And the talk about supersonic torpedoes is kinda like the vaporware that dot.com companies would produce a few years ago. Big talk to try and make an impression, but none of it actually works in real world tests.

The Russians are mostly a paper tiger, but they do still have nukes. But that's about all they are now - a broke down 3rd World country run by a thug with nukes.

I will say some of the technology is nice, being able to take a road trip and the kids have an iPad to watch a movie is a gamechanger, but I would gladly swap that for the culture 30+ years ago.

Listening to the weaponry I hear fired at midnight every New Years Eve and July 4th, I'd say that my East Texas town probably outguns the entire modern German Army.

Hmmm, I have noticed many modern cd players do a hard cut between tracks (or whatever we call them on cds). So a song will come to an end, it will cut, then a moment of pause happens, and the next song starts, which is the end of the last song. Or vice versa.

A big part to of the appeal for vinyl before the hipsters got into them was the sound quality. The way vinyl was recorded was pure analog, no digital compression, so many argue the sound quality is superior and closer to the true source.

Straight-up A to D, D to A systems (original CD's) do not do that. It is the later formats, like MP-3, that screw around with things, with audible consequences.

So far as vinyl goes, there was LOTS of screwing around with the recordings, both by the recording engineers, and the record manufacturers.

As DVD was transitioning in, I bought a LaserDisc player and a large stack of LDs for cheap just because I wanted one when they were stupidly expensive. A cool format, but not something that would have made sense to throw big money at back in the day. It was like between Beta and DVD. On a small TV though, it was basically perfect.

We did some joint exercises with the Germans, back in the day. Seemed like nice enough fellows, with their beards, and CO who spoke better English than we did.

They didn't strike me as much of a fighting force. When they brought up the Tiger tanks though, I must admit those were awfully cool looking. Better looking than the Abrams, I think.

I've heard it argued and I'll concede the point that the highs are compressed on digital recordings and it's impossible to do that on analog mediums like vinyl.

Does it matter very much? Probably not to most people.
Posted by: Moron Robbie
---------

Straight-up A to D, D to A systems (original CD's) do not do that. It is the later formats, like MP-3, that screw around with things, with audible consequences.

So far as vinyl goes, there was LOTS of screwing around with the recordings, both by the recording engineers, and the record manufacturers.

As DVD was transitioning in, I bought a LaserDisc player and a large stack of LDs for cheap just because I wanted one when they were stupidly expensive. Funny, I remember CDs sounding cold, dead, flat and all too often brickwalled out the ass.

No fluidity. No roundness of tone at all. Lots of glare and entire instruments missing from mixes.

639 I've heard that LD is still the best format for some movies due to the studios doing hack job conversions of some films to DVD and a few others that still haven't been released.
Posted by: Jackal
___________

I've heard that as well, but in my opinion it's not really true.

There were like a handful of movies (like maybe 4) that I think the studio put a huge amount of TLC into the sound mixing when Dolby Digital was first introduced to sort of show it off, but at least technically speaking, LD is inferior to DVD and REALLY inferior to something like BluRay.

Very early DVDs though were pretty terrible (and so were early LDs, it was 1970's tech) so I think there may have been a window where the last LDs looked a little better than the first DVDs. But it had more to do with the learning curve than the technology.

Now, I know YOU think the 1stA does not confirm our God-given, individual rights to speech and writing. You actually think "freedom of the press" means special exemptions and privileges for a self-anointed professional clique.

This belief is what renders you stupid, if not ridiculous.
When the media accuses Trump or other MSM critics of "attacking the 1stA," it's as if Pravda were to accuse the samizdat dissidents of attacking free speech and a free press.

I'm guessing the torrent biz stays operational, due mostly to people accessing via wifi.

I don't really blame content providers for trying to hold onto their "intellectual" property. It's a free market thing, in my mind. In other words, a problem with a solution I can't yet see, because I don't really care, but one that inevitably will have to be resolved.

If everyone is getting everything for free, eventually everything will stop being made. Or if it keeps being made, they'll figure out how to monetize it, in spite of all the efforts at pirating.

Lego has made some amazing stuff in the last decade or so. There are some sets of construction vehicles with motors and pneumatic pumps.

My favorite is the Ferrari F40 that my kids and I put together. It's neat to see how parts that have nothing to do with anything end up being recognizable parts of the car or engine. Revolvers (pistols) as manifolds comes to mind. The way the venturi intakes and seats came together was very clever, too.

I thought that it was quite good and included the character of some obsessive director who sounds to me like an earlier version of Stanley Kubrick. Unfortunately he has to present it right now and will be graded on his delivery and final expressions. I don't think the English class should have a grade on public speaking/acting. 730 A dog does not have an eternal soul. People do. So those who compare the two as equal, prove they do not comprehend basic existentialism.
------------

To refer to 'an eternal soul' implies a belief in scripture. If that is the case, then one (or at least a Christian) generally believes that Scripture is the Divinely-inspired word of God.

In Genesis it is stated that God granted dominion over the beasts. 'Dominion' and 'ownership' are two different things, the former carries with it responsibility, but not the absolute authority that ownership does.

Psalm 50:11 I know every bird in the mountains, and the insects in the fields are mine.

Matthew 10:29 Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground outside your Father's care.

But people often go hunting, and that isn't controversial either (unless you post pics on facebook). By his argument conservatives going on safaris to hunt liberals would be perfectly ok.

I could also add that there are times when the choice can easily be made not to save the life of the dog because the owner doesn't want the expense, or when PETA euthanizes feral animals and does he want healthcare to work that way for humans? Keep in mind what I'm about to write is about 10 years old, so the rules may have changed. However...

FWIW, it's basically an unwritten rule that ISPs will do everything in their power to overlook torrent access, and probably avoid suing VPN providers. They typically only send notices to you when they have received C&Ds from companies monitoring torrents, and even then the vast majority of these are just huffing and puffing. Legally, they can say they've protected their copyright/trademark, but oftentimes they never actually sue the downloader. Whenever they do it's a PR clusterfuck since it never looks good to have a multinational, massively profitable corporation suing a 20-something penniless college student into the ground. IIRC when they DO sue someone, it's usually a habitual, 000s of gigabytes downloaded type of torrenter, and even then they usually settle the suit under the table after they get their dose of "SEE THEY ARE SUING PEOPLE" fear PR.

ISPs profit from increased traffic from torrents, and themselves have no desire to shut off your internet.

Works with a younger wife too. Touring around France, she noticed the many signs with speed bump symbols and asked me what they stood for. My grin-control muscles are well trained, and with a straight face, I told her that the symbol was of Napoleons hat. When she asked why they would have that on a sign, I said it was just a way of remembering him - they commemorate every place the wind blew his hat off with a sign like that.

Months later we had some friends over for drinks and she starts telling this story! I was feeling guilty because they would think she was crazy, but before I could beg foregiveness for how I had tricked her, it became clear that they all believed it too! All Hillary voters, so Napoleon resonates with them, I guess. I often fantasize about these people spreading the story far and wide.
