A Little of This. A Little of That.

We usually hear about the Fire Department reaching up to great heights to rescue cats. Not always.

Just because a pet has a disability doesn't mean he/she has to be destroyed. Deaf and partially blind saves 3 year old.h/t Hrothgar

Always be careful when you choose your pet sitter.

Dog moments. Dog owners I think can relate to most of these. I know I can.

..for the pet thread. Just thought you might enjoy this. You recall the pic of Charlie-the-guine-pig in his strawberry house? Well, this was the scene last night. That's Ace, my one-eyed pirate cat whom I have offered to Teh Boss in a blatant attempt to bribe him into whitelisting me so I can comment. If you scroll off to the right (and I'm sorry about the size but seem to have made the pic un-editable) you'll see poor Charlie under his china hutch. He needs a thought bubble...."WTF, cat?!?" - Creeper

Quite the household you have there Creeper. Amazing they all get along.

"Happy, happy!" Her Majesty and Lacey after winning another Best in Show. Lacey appeared as a champion in 378 shows and was Best of Breed in 269 of them. Her Majesty handled her in every one and you can see the bond of love that joined the two over the years.

Lacey's morning was silver, her noontime golden and her evening bronze. But each was solid and all were polished until they shone after their fashion. She was our heart. She was magic.

This is our little Black-Capped conure Hugo Whistler. He is named after the great mid twentieth century composer Hugo Distler. At 18 years he is past mid-life. If we are lucky we will have him for at least another 12. Yes, he does talk, having a vocabulary of 20-30 words. His favorite phrases are “love you”, “where are you going” and “what are you doing.” And of course he can say his name and does so with frequency. He also makes kissing noises when he thinks he is not getting enough attention. Conures make great companions but they are, as all parrots are, high maintenance pets. They need a lot of attention and are incredibly messy as you can see in the first picture. If you are willing to put up with the high maintenance, parrots make wonderful pets. Cheers! -Long time lurker/Too shy to comment.

Thanks for the photo and telling us about parrots. We don't get a lot of photos and stories about them. He's a beautiful creature.

2 Finally got the old cat into the vets. He does not have a blood clot. The vet thinks it is a bone spur on his spine affecting his nerves. He gets prednisone to take down the swelling and we'll see how it goes.

Sorry about the loss of your gentleman.

19 MisHum get outta my head! Just yesterday talking to youngest kidlet talking about her friend's new puppy and sending grandparent wisdom to the idiot adopting and really firm and semi-irritable 'NO' to the idea of more here (two toddler grandkids and grandpuppy as a a regular visitor).

Anyway, resident Cat used to make himself a pain (in the ankle, knees, and back) when he would throw himself in front of me to trip me up and get petted. He has finally stopped -- although the stories about the invisible black cat and on the navy blue carpeting were usually funny.

24 Ah, Hugo Distler-- fond memories of singing in a church choir directed by an organist who was quite knowledgeable about Distler and played his music as part of his degree recital for the School of Sacred Music. I got interested in Distler, read up on him, and was saddened to find out that he was a very real casualty of WWII-- he committed suicide as an act of conscience in 1942 to avoid conscription into the Wehrmacht.

Sorry-- didn't mean to drag down the pet thread-- I think it is a lovely tribute to HD to name such a cheery-looking bird after him. And may Hugo Whistler continue to delight you for many more years.

32 Today we got the kitties out back with harnesses on again. Fluff (queen bitch of the universe) fought all the way getting the harness on. Then she acted like she was scared shitless in the yard, totally put out. I finally coaxed her to where i was sitting near the pygmy palms. She walked around under them for a few minutes, then in a flash took one estimating look at the 7 ft. cinder wall and leapt 3/4 way up and scrambled to the top heading over it for the neighbors. I just grabbed her harness in time. Sneaky beyotch.

36 33 True dat. Psittacosis is a really bad bug. One interesting historical fact about it-- there was an outbreak of it in the United States in 1929 that led not only to controls on the import of pet parrots but also to the foundation of what is now the NIH. Mighty gummint institutions from little boids do grow.

37 Well of course they don't know you didn't get up to kick them, which is why you have to apologize sincerely when you do. They understand that - cats too.

There are two cats in my house that live in terror of my feet, since I tend to blunder around without really looking what I'm about to step on. To them I think I must be the fee-fi-fo-fum giant in the Beanstalk story. Anyway they've pretty much learned not to sleep in the middle of the floor.

38 We have found often when our cats ( now just cat) gets under foot or incidentally kicked she is afraid to come near for a while or runs to the other for protection. Sometimes we think she thinks the shoe is the culprit like it has a mind of its own.

41 Whenever we accidently kick or step on one of our cats, we immediately run and hug them and kiss them and give them treats...They seem to accept the apology in stride. AND they sit right in out way on the stairs or elsewhere and don't even flinch when we are carrying loads or the such...so they pretty much know we would never harm them intentionally. Almost as if they are saying " Yeah I'm in your way. So? What are you going to do about it human?" LOL

44 Anyway they've pretty much learned not to sleep in the middle of the floor.

Do they curl around your ankles when you're trying to feed them or give them fresh water? Mine do that at least half the time when their chow is on its way-- even when they're hungry and meowing for the good stuff from the Fancy Feast can. I have a hunch that other cat people on the thread can relate. The dude cat has an additional habit of stopping suddenly when I'm behind him and stretching out with his butt in the air. Must be another cat thing-- "Let's see if I can trip that big clumsy critter with the opposable thumbs."

47 This is our first spring with Prince the rescue poodle. He is discovering the wonders of all the scents in the backyard as the ground thaws and the plants start growing. He still remembers to do his business but there are a LOT of distractions.

Speaking of new smells for him to enjoy, a local nursery (bless them) encourages customers to bring their dogs with them while shopping. The other day, Prince got his first visit in warmer weather. As much as he enjoys car rides, I thought I would have to carry him out of the place. He was so intent on exploring all those intriguing scents he didn't want to leave. I thought his nose was going to 'snuffle' off his face. It doesn't hurt that he is so cute and his tail is always wagging which gets him pats and attention from all the staff and customers. Doggy heaven.

Warm your cold, hard, heart (/s) JTB and others: kidlet's friend adopted an older chihuaua (sp?) four years ago. He was 12 or so, but the youngster decided he needed her more than the cute puppies. Four years later, toothless, but charming as all get out. Don't know how much longer he has, but for all my yapping about irresponsible kids, that dog and his kidlet just made me a little sniffly.

I don't care what anyone says, it is true that you CAN kick a cat/step on its foot, have it yell and hiss at you, and if you chase it around the house saying you are sorry, the cat understands.

It doesn't forgive right away (these are cats, did I mention that?), but it will acknowledge your contrition, and allow you to pet/scratch its head and back. Eventually.

Spring time........they are feeling amorous.

82 I wouldn't mind owning a cat. I think a cat and my pup Moose would be fast friends. Sadly, my husband is allergic.

83 In Russia, cat owns you!

Oh wait, that's everywhere.

84 Not a cat person, but Russian Blues are beautiful and very doglike from what I hear. If I had the money, I'd probably get a Siamese though.

85 My cats have been extra cuddly lately, I can't figure out why.

Sure sure sure. All my cats are fixed. Amore is not an option.

None of them are de-clawed or de-fanged. Murder is indeed, on the table.

Funny thing is, after going through more than a few cats, I have decided their physical appearance matters not to me. I am aware there must be some distinction between breeds, but it's almost sorta like children... very much like children. What you get is what you get.

If you are capable of loving, you love the ones you have.

This +1. I'd love my kittehs even if they turned out to be fans of AL teams. Mine know it's baseball season-- lots of batting practice going on out in the kitchen now that the weather has warmed up (and yes, they have baseball-themed cat toys).

My two feet live in terror of my cat.

Believe me, the kitteh gets payback for the accidental kick when you stretch your feet out on the bed near them.

They're both fixed, they were cut off from the idea of romance before I got them.

Mine aren't the bitey type. They pay me back in couch-hork.

91 We got home this week after 6 months on the road and I let the doggies out into the yard to resmell it. I opened the back door and there was a large grey dog lying in the grass. My dogs were as surprised as I was and they went to investigate. Just a lot of smelling each other, then the owner called him and he jumped over the back fence to go home. The women came out to tell us how glad she was that we were back because her dog loves our backyard more than theirs. We figured it was the smells, now that the dogs are home, they can smell between the fences.
Too bad the house is sold. I hope the new owners have a dog.

94 Yeah, my "Recsue" dog blames me for everything. Stomach issues, epileptic siezures, everything!! Get a puppy, don't adopt a "Rescue" dog! Rescue dogs think that you are a part of a kidnapping ring. You stole them from their owner. Whether the owner was abusive or not, it loved the the owner and looks at you as a kidnapper. At some point the dog may get Stockholm Syndrome and become attached to you, but is this real love? I don't think so. My rescue dog is attached to me after 2 years but doesn't really trust me. I still can't clip her claws, nor bathe her.
