From An Outsider's Perspective California Is Nuts

In 2017 Los Angeles had a homeless population of 58,000 people. The homeless census of 2018 just took place.

The annual three-day effort to update Los Angeles County’s homeless figures is underway. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development requires the count in all areas that seek federal funds to address homelessness.

After last year’s count, officials said there were nearly 58,000 homeless people in the county. The Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority will release this year’s results in the spring. It is the first census since funds began to flow from two recent tax measures for homeless services and housing.

More tax money thrown at the problem doesn't seem to be helping.

Los Angeles County's homeless population is increasing faster than the supply of new housing, even with the addition of thousands of beds in the last two years and millions of dollars beginning to flow in from two ballot measures targeting the crisis, according to a long-awaited report by the region's homelessness agency.

The report showed that officials two years ago far underestimated how much new housing would be needed when they asked city and county voters to approve the tax measures.

Not only does La La Land have money to throw at homeless. It also has money to curb global warming.

The City of Los Angeles, and CBS LA, unintentionally expose what a huge component of what the reality of global warming is: namely, that so much of the recorded temperatures are artificially inflated from the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, as well as land use. Yes, these are anthropogenic, but, they are not causing future doom, and the reliance on blamestorming a tiny increase in the atmospheric carbon dioxide content is a bunch of mule fritters

(CBS LA) In the race to combat climate change, the city of Los Angeles is employing a surprising new tactic — covering its streets in a grayish-white coating known as CoolSeal.

It’s sprayed onto the roadway with trucks, then spread across the surface with squeegees. However, its impact extends far beyond the edge of the pavement.

Will California split up? California may have an opportunity to split their state up into 3 states.

Billionaire venture investor Tim Draper on Thursday said he has the signatures he needs to put his initiative to break up California into three states before the state’s voters.

Draper said in a press release that he has gathered about 600,000 signatures for his “Cal 3” initiative that would divide the country’s most populous state into three new ones: Northern California, Southern California and California.

Los Angeles would be in the new California. The farmland and forested areas, along with San Francisco and the Silicon Valley technology hub, would be turned into the two other states.

The signatures on the Cal 3 petition have yet to be certified, so it isn’t officially on the ballot yet.

But people aren't waiting for sanity to come back. They are leaving. And depending on your point of view, leaving in droves.

VICTORVILLE — Billy Joel’s classic tune “Movin’ Out” could be an appropriate theme song for the many individuals in the High Desert and California who have packed up and relocated to places like Oregon, Michigan, Arizona, Texas and Idaho.

The Golden State continues to rank No. 1 as the state that has waved goodbye to more residents, about 143,000 last year, than welcomed those who have moved here, according to a U.S. Census Bureau report.

And despite the state losing 3.5 million people to other states from 2010 to 2015, many demographic experts said there is no mass exodus from California.

I saw a map of what those three new States would be. Split roughly in half longitudinally and a narrow corridor along the coast from SF to San Diego. That would likely be two Democrat senators in the corridor and at least 3 or 4 Republicans in the other areas. that is why Democrats will NEVER approve it.

39 Three problems with the above.

1. It looks as if any proposes split will be effectively gerrymandered to keep the American parts of CA submerged under the Bolshies. E.g., SF and LA should be part of one segment.

2. There's a big danger of people fleeing CA bringing California attitudes with them. We've seen this happen in Virginia.

3. It still leave SanFran and LA in the US. Get them out. Then build a wall.

42 The Cal 3 is a compromise, both left and right gain/lose. The prior Cal 5 and Cal 6 options were more geared to benefit the right, and thus were doomed.

Bottom line is that Cal 3 will result in two left states and one right state. 4 dem senators and 2 republican. Congress stays about the same. So dems gain in the senate, but the split kills the Dems in the electoral college, flipping about 15 votes from left to right.

from SF to the border and in about 20 miles, then the rest of the state.

And the non-coastal area would probably be GOP.

I went to my high school reunion yesterday and had to sit through the Head of School speaking proudly of how the students had organized to March on "March For Our Lives" day. And this is an all-girl private school! Diversity posters everywhere... it was ridiculous. It was not like that when I attended.

88 No Skip, there are lots of non-sheep and non-idiots out here, it all depends on districts. Due to the state's size, as someone here noted recently there are more registered GOP voters than in most states, including large-ish red ones. And note that that is with the *CA* GOP, which is a parody of a bad, useless GOP.

The cowardice, stupidity, and mediocrity of the political class is a national calamity, and it's a large part of CA's problem. Just look at what happens when someone, somewhere, finally says "nope, no more" - as with the counties/cities rebelling on the idiotic "sanctuary" law.

Prop 8 passed easily (probiting marriage redefinition). In the idiotic, disastrous year of Obama. Which means the electorate that gave the affirmative action intern some ginormous majority *also* casually and comfortably rejected marriage redefinition. There's political information in that factoid.

I liken CA, politically, to a tourist restaurant with horrible food situated in a spectacular, world-beating location with a view. That's the dynamic. The state's natural and economic assets (the latter could have been located anywhere, they just happened to spring up here) keep things going *despite* the way things are run.

And recall how quickly this can happen. For decades CA had probably the best public administration, public goods, and outcomes of any state. Then - poof, every pathology known to today's America was either invented, borrowed, or rented, and pushed to the max.

-------------------

This.

Sacramento's been so over the top lately that I'm finally starting to come around to the idea of splitting up my home state (I've been resistant in the past). But the plan that's been mentioned in various places over the last week or two would merely give the Dems four new Senators. It would more or less preserve blue dominance across all three of the new states. Sacramento and the Bay Area would continue to dominate the northern state. Los Angeles would dominate the middle state. And only the southern state, with San Diego, might come close to letting Republicans have a say in what's going on.

This current plan is a bad one.

Apart from the phenomenon that people simply will pay more to live in those areas - and it's reached levels that have economists scratching their heads as to affordability - there is big foreign money.

The world wealth explosion means there are plenty of people from abroad with plenty of $$$, who don't give a f**k about gun laws, or idiotic environmental shake-downs, or scandalous education situations. 144 I live in the Peoples Republic Of California (the High Desert
area of San Bernardino.) Homelessness was the original
"sanctuary city" movement. In the deep blue cities, even
wealthy cities like Santa Monica rolled out the welcome
mat for the homeless. This happened decades before
they conceived the idea of welcoming and sheltering
illegal aliens.

This has always been about boosting the census numbers
to reap federal funding and provide the Democrat party
with an endless number of voters in their quest for a
one-party state. Every election year the Donks troll
the convalescent hospitals, homeless encampments,
and minority neighborhoods and the like and not only
register them to vote, they even fill out their absentee
ballots. For the Democrats, politics is a blood sport
and any form of election fraud comes under their
philosophy of the ends justifying the means.

They even set up registration booths at swearing-in
ceremonies for new citizens. The Republican party
will continue to lose elections unless the swamp can
be drained. We cannot win using the Marquis de
Queensbury rules. In any fight, the winner will
always be the most ruthless, cunningest, dirtiest
fighter.

I don't know the answer to any of these difficult questions.

However one single solitary Catholic nun made it her mission to help the homeless. And now 25 years after Project Home was launched by Sr. Mary Scullion, thousands of homeless have found shelter and even employment through her organization's efforts. She attracted the attention of Jon Bon Jovi, who started a foundation of his own to aid the homeless population.

I've often wondered why Sr. Mary's template hasn't been followed in other areas of the country.

152 I don't think the permanent homeless, as opposed to people temporarily down on their luck, are homeless as a result of housing policies. 153 To repeat the question, why not division initiatives, or even discussions (completely unrealistic as this one is) about states with much cleaner, starker political splits? Which abound.

Unless there's a clean, almost guaranteed partisan-neutral impact (i.e. one D and one R senate delegation added), they'd all be as dead-letter as DC statehood or CA splitting up.

But off-hand I can think of several like that: IL, WA, OR, even NY.

157 I don't know the answer to any of these difficult questions.

He became "woke" to the homeless problem one day when he looked out his Philly luxury hotel window to the street below. (He was in town for a show). He saw a woman and her children begging on the street.

So, he did what any socially conscious rock star/idol/icon would do: He sent his roadie to go talk to the lady and see what her story was.

That's how the Bon Jovi foundation for the poor got its start.

We have an ex-sherrif who's a pretty good public speaker, is pretty well known in the area now that he's retired (and he's a hoot to listen to) He ran the county jail here for 30 years, from the late 70's til about 2008, and he will say that when he started, he would always have a few mentally ill inmates. But by the time he retired, he estimated that 50% - 75% of the county jail population had at least some level of mental illness, and that it made it incredibly difficult since the jailers were now supposed to be psychiatrists and medication managers and it was an impossible task for them to keep up with.

He convincingly makes the case that starting in the 60's, we have simply abandoned most treatment for the indigent mentally ill, and just leave them to wander around on the streets until they break the law in some way (which most will) at which point it becomes the job of the county jail to warehouse them, until their sentence is up, at which point they get sent back to the streets and the whole cycle repeats. It's a terrible, terrible system, probably about as bad as when the English used to lock their mentally ill into Bedlam so they could ignore them.

You can't put in a house because it's in the flood plain. We can't have a dock because we pissed off some bureaucrats at DNR. The county gave DNR the surrounding wetlands, originally donated to them, because DNR threatened to drag them into our lawsuit. Had the state stayed on its original track, instead of going hard left, things would have been different. We'll rebuild the double wide through Labor and Industries, who have jurisdiction, and find someone that thinks things will be different for them.

An example that always surprises people in Texas - zoning and building restrictions only exist inside designated city limits. I think Texas got lucky in that going back to frontier days, there were always a bunch of big ranchers in the legislature, and the one thing that they always agreed on was that they didn't want the State to have any power to mess around with them on their own land. In Texas, the county - level governments are astoundingly weak - they take care of the county roads, county jail, county courthouse, and employ a Sheriff and some deputies to patrol unincorporated areas. And that's about it.

For that reason, whenever you hear of some crazy liberal scheme coming out of Texas, it will always be some city government that the dems have captured that is doing it.

Real crunch, as elsewhere, will be unfunded retirement liabilities. Aside from financial chicanery, or federal bailouts (which ain't happening), not sure what they plan to do.

Brown really has mental problems that have surged the last few years, which have given his dumbest obsessions (such as AGW) an energy and messianic quality they lacked before (and have taken him from a moderate on gun laws to a kook). Newsome's a vile idiot, less intelligent than Brown, but I just wonder how much more fuel some of the craziness in CA has.

Two Trump terms and keeping Congress nominally GOP are critical if any of the counter-vailing pressures and dynamics in CA are to have a chance to mature.

284 I know Fort Worth is ostensibly conservative. But there's something in the water there, or something. Its court of appeals fairly regularly manages to fuck up the simplest shit. 289 Grt Wht Scotsman, you are referring to SCOTUS's ukaz abolishing CA's referendum process. Well, de facto.

It really stands as the gleaming monument to constitutional collapse and judicial lawlessness, which more than any "idea" hatched in CA has brought the country to its current state.

It was a masterpiece. Clear issue, 3rd time the voters had spoken on it. Not the trace of any serious legal or constitutional objection possible. So faithless state officials (check) refuse to defend it, as is their obligation (check). Outside group steps in to defend, loses in a court that was laughably unprofessional and partial (check). Appeal is made to SCOTUS. Standing is denied, because ..... not state officials (check!).

Splitting the state into three states still does not work, but it would be better.
The real problem is that NoCal would be dominated by the Bay Area, Cal would be run by LA and only So Cal would have enough geographic and economic diversity that it would be more reflective of the concerns of all the residents, not run by wealthy coastal gentry liberals.

They look at Europe and jerk off to the fantasy of that being here in the US. But the thing is Europe is essentially built with the mindset of 1000 years ago. So its actually been easier to build in those train stations and bus in singular locations with minimal impact to everything around it. America isn't built that way. We have built and adapted to the personal transportation and the space and parking to allow for it.

So why bother needing to know the public transportation schedule, and then walk to the station, hope it is on time, and hope it gets to the closest stop for where you need to go at the right time, and then walk to the place you need to get within the time you need. When instead you could have your own car, kind of know the traffic demands of the region, and drive to a parking spot likely much closer, go in get your shit done, and then get in your car and go again, rather than needing to repeat the whole Public Transportation dance again to get home.

I had an uncle who was a DoD lawyer and lived in Springfield, VA. When they built the DC subway, there was a terminus not five minutes from his house, with quite a huge commuter parking lot; my aunt didn't work and she could have dropped off in the morning and pick him up in the evening. I asked him why he still got up at 4 a.m. to drive to work in DC, fighting the godawful traffic, if there was a subway nearby. Now this was years ago when he said, 'I'm not giving up my car!'

If CA gets split up such that each new state has two Senators, the Democrats come out far ahead unless the lines are gerrymandered to give Republicans control. The HoR delegation won't change much, albeit split over three states.

I don't see how the other states could possibly go along with four new Senators diluting their own power. Even the blue states won't like that.

There are for obvious states: The original San Diego County (orange county and lots of inland) up to the , Mariposa (I would take it up to Yuba County or maybe only Calaveras), Coastal California (Los Angeles County through Santa Cruz & Contra Costa Counties (includes San Francisco) and points north of Coastal and Mariposa.

It would seem to do a better job of supporting diverse political interests

331 Whaddayamean? We in LA have semi elected some of the smartest people on the planet to run our lives.
For example:

The Brain Surgeons we have "elected" -there are no real elections anymore in Cali- have decided in my hometown of Hollyweird that they are going to reduce on all our major thoroughfares the traffic lanes dedicated to autos from 2 to1, and dedicate a lane exclusively to buses and bikes.

Isn't that wonderful? isn't that brilliant?

Now mind you Hollyweird is like this huge traffic funnel where all the traffic coming from the south across this vast area in the LA basin must funnel to just a couple of streets to go through the already congested Cahuenga Pass. Also mind you only a small portion of this traffic is local - most of it is just passing through, and won't be effected by either buses or bikes.

So the Brain Surgeons of the LA City Council, our brilliant only semi-elected overlords, have come up with brilliant solution with bicycles to our traffic problems. It's going to be just fantastic!

Fantastically Bad, that is!

Every Western state has Motor Voter laws. Just register to vote when you renew your drivers license, how innocent is that?

The answer is the voter rolls are hopelessly corrupt. And since the party in power benefits from these corrupt voting rolls, good luck in trying to get them cleaned up.

I have seen it myself when renewing my license, and when I asked the clerk if he thought there may be something wrong, he became defensive for his job and said "we are required to ask everyone and never question anything". I then asked him if he ever heard of an audit of any kind, and he laughed at me. I think he was on my side, but was fearful for his job and benefits.

Want to fix this crap? Fix the voter rolls to only have actual American citizens on them, and a felony with immediate deportation for those found to be cheating.

Or just plan to report to the extermination booths, aka Star Trek episode, "The Taste of Armageddon". A simulated computer war that if you are a casualty, you report for real extermination, because real war is too awful to contemplate.

Come to think of it, we are closer than I first thought.

334 US Congress would have to approve the breakup of CA into 3 States, and congressional D's would NEVER approve it.

It would destroy their electoral chances for POTUS. Currently, they have a lock on 55 electoral college votes and they don't have to spend a dime campaigning there. Two of the Three States it would split into would either be competitive or Republican.

For the Senate, D's would go from 2 guaranteed seats to 2 guaranteed and 4 competitive (possibly R) seats.

For the House, its a wash.

Bottom line: It matters little what CA voters think. US Congress gets the final say.
