When Was The Last Time You Changed Your Mind About Something?

A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines.
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson

I had an odd conversation last night, and it piqued my interest in why the person was so confident of her position in spite of very little data to back it up and even less personal experience.

Yes, of course, she is a Northeastern liberal. Duh. And her position? America has become more racist.

But that's not the point. What intrigued me was how seldom people change their minds. I could cite chapter and verse that America and Americans are probably the least racist country and people on earth, but it wouldn't have mattered much.

The last time I changed my mind was about Bibi Netanyahu. My initial and longstanding opinion of him was glowingly positive, but Moron Nevergiveup was tenacious and convincing in his argument that Bibi is mostly talk and is not the paragon of Israeli strength and determination that I assumed.

How about you? When were you persuaded that your initial opinion -- of anything -- was simply incorrect?

Still like the idea, but our government isn't competent at unimportant things, let alone.

I guess it sort of goes along with my eventual disdain for the government in general. I don't even believe it's legitimate, at this point.

19 And yet, how many times in his presidency has Trump changed his mind, about policy, about personnel, about the right negotiating posture? This is NOT nitpicking; in fact, I consider this one of PDT's greatest strengths, and a "superpower" few other residents of the Oval Office ever have had. What might George W. Bush's, or even Jimmy Carter's presidency have been if they had swiftly recognized and reversed disastrous policies? At any rate, it's why Trump already has my vote in 2020; he has no belief whatsoever in human infallibility.

I don't change my mind about much. New information, or better information can sway my opinion a few degrees.

As to racism in America, I have to admit to some less then glowing perceptions of cultural elements of people other then my own 'tribe'. The misandry, the less then stellar family values, the chip-on-the-shoulder perpetually aggrieved attitude.

44 A commenter claimed just yesterday (the name was familiar Burt something) that there are no selfless acts, that everything is done in self interest. That people are kind and generous because they want to feel good about themselves or for some other self interested reason. I was very annoyed at this idea but I pondered it for an hour or two and came to the strange realization that in my own case it was true. I try to be a better person and be nice to others in the hopes that a better person is more likely to accumulate wisdom. And with more wisdom l can understand the world better. That being said, no one ever jumped on a grenade because they want to feel better about themselves. So there are some selfless acts, but perhaps not as many as we assume.

46 Death penalty's another one. I still support it in principle, but looking at how corrupt the system is, how devious and self-serving prosecutors can be, and how lackadaisical and inept the labs and other forensic "experts" relied on can be, I am far less strident about its application in anything other than slam dunk cases.

Posted by: Insomniac at April 15, 2018 12:25 PM (NWiLs)

47 The human brain is designed to think in ways that take shortcuts. This is an example of it. Settling into an idea, then sticking with it, to make the world easier to navigate.

Which works fine, most of the time, and if you were raised in a tradition of beliefs (a shared culture), the world could be both simple and clear, and you would be operating just fine in it. MOST of the time.

We are so bombarded by new ideas now though, and a rather unhealthy disregard for the past and its traditions, we're forced to rethink what we already "know," more than is comfortable. So the person who WON'T rethink, it's a defense against the chaos.

Which is much more unhealthy, for those who have as their foundation, this gibbering nonsense we call modern thought.

A similar one for me was conspiracy theorists who post videos of the rainbows coming off their lawn sprinklers as evidence of government mind control chemtrail proof or whatever. Used to be a big joke, then one day - no catalyzing event or personal experience or anything, just out of nowhere - I imagined a family sitting around the kitchen table some Saturday morning:
"Your brother posted another video"
"I know"
"Are we going to do anything?"
"He won't take the meds, what's to do?"
...and so on. Not so funny now.

Now I see these hyper-aggressive prosecutors throwing every charge they can at somebody the police have arrested, withholding exculpatory evidence, etc.

So I don't know if voting for these things was a good thing.

92 The war in Iraq. I was very much for it. I saw it as a way to reign in Iran. It was a colossal mistake that gave Iran even more dominance in the region. In fact, the whole Bush presidency was a huge mistake. We'd been better off getting Gore to f### up after 9/11 and then electing someone better than Bush. Perhaps we wouldn't have the patriot act, Obama, or Obamacare. Bush did nothing the decrease the size, scope, and power of the Government

97 This is NOT nitpicking; in fact, I consider this one of PDT's greatest strengths, and a "superpower" few other residents of the Oval Office ever have had. What might George W. Bush's, or even Jimmy Carter's presidency have been if they had swiftly recognized and reversed disastrous policies?

Yeah you can take it too far but definitely guys like George Bush the younger were way too big on loyalty and staying the course.

Its like the Cardinals baseball club. They have long had a very good tradition of staying with a manager once they get one. And through the years, they've had amazing managers who they should have stuck with. But if you use that as policy rather than a case-by-case analysis, you end up sticking with someone you ought have dumped... like their present manager, who is lousy and needs to be replaced.

99 I used to think Dubya was an honorable man and that despite his wealth and pedigree he championed the common man. I've changed my mind about that. I also have had second thoughts about going into Iraq - not because it was a bad idea to get rid of Saddam but because this country no longer has the will to make a long-term commitment. Also, I'm not sure it would make a difference in that shithole anyway. Bush thought everyone wants freedom and the Arabs would too if they had the choice. But hell, there are Americans who don't want freedom. The Arabs have no history of democracy. Germany and Japan have representative government now only because we smashed their countries into rubble first.

Is that changing your mind or just recognizing events?

I bought into the neocon argument. I thought getting rid of the thugocracy in Iraq would establish a decent middle class democracy in the Middle East and that would encourage the region to change.

So we were wrong. Events proved us wrong. I don't know that recognizing events is the same as changing your mind.

A year later, I hosted a small open house after a condo meeting, and they came and stayed late. Turned out they were great, high quality people who became good friends. Their kids were buddies with mine for many, many years. We've gone somewhat separate ways just due to life's logistics and their principal residence being far from mine. But we still consider ourselves friends.

165 You cannot change people mind about politics by discussion, persuasion, facts etc... It can only be accomplished by a personal beat-down by reality, repeatedly if necessary (which is what it took for me), and opening ones eyes to the real world, and very often even that is not enough since peer pressure to conform, need for acceptance in the club and feel virtuous is intense . Which is why I don't even try to change peoples mind about politics. Can't be done.

166 Back in the 70s as a young neocon I got into a heated discussion with a close paleoliberal friend over immigration, particularly of the Muslim variety. He was adamant: "Don't let 'em in", while I called for open borders with the following conditions:
1) Learn and use English as primary language
2) Obey our laws and stay out of trouble
3) Work and stay off welfare

Well, forty years later it is crystal clear that NONE of those conditions are being met. Furthermore, at the time I didn't really have an appreciation for the tribal nature of society, even though I'm a member of (((The Tribe))) myself. So, yes indeed I have changed my mind big time.

170 I was once a liberal and changed my mind about that while I was stationed in Vietnam. The fact I was a liberal at one time can be explained by the fact my parents were both liberals. Not just any liberals, mind you, but Adlai Stevenson liberals.

My parents came around eventually. For my father it was after he retired from the military and started buying rental properties in San Francisco. The nonsense regulations the libs enacted drove him to a conservative frame of mind.
For my mother it was Billy Jeff Clinton that made her a conservative.

196 Also, I used to be in favor of maximum prison sentences, three-strikes-and-you're-out laws, taking away sentencing discretion from judges, etc.

Now I see these hyper-aggressive prosecutors throwing every charge they can at somebody the police have arrested, withholding exculpatory evidence, etc.

So I don't know if voting for these things was a good thing.
............
OM - It is the wildly varying application of these policy changes from one jurisdiction to another that really has made me skeptical of across the board sentencing guidelines.

But not only these kind of policies.. prosecutors swing the other way as well and make our cities less safe..

For instance.. drug dealers.. very often they are also hit with gun possession/use charges in addition to their drug charges. The two combined can put these violent thugs away for many years..

But to get an easy conviction, prosecutors will deal away the gun charges for a plea to drug possession. So, a violent drug dealer goes away for a year when he should be in jail for much of his adult life. When he gets out, he's back to his old tricks..

And this fuels the libtard argument that our prisons are filled with non-violent drug offenders..

makes me fucking mental..

So.. law enforcement in general has taken a big hit for me.. like others above, I used to be 100% behind them.. but with cell phone videos available, I am no longer willing to give an LEO the benefit of the doubt that he/she is one of the "good guys". and, that is sad..

I haven't really changed my mind on Trump. I thought it was way past-due for a businessperson to take charge and correct the wrongs that have festered for almost two decades. Didn't care for him personally, not a huge fan of New Yorkers. I've only had dealings with possibly one hundred NYers in my lifetime, but they've all rubbed me the wrong way in matters of class, polish, demeanor, attitude, disposition, values, whatever you want to call it. It's like their internal clocks have to run faster because of so many living in such small real estate.

I didn't expect Trump to be much different. So I don't particularly care for him or think of him as some sort of exemplary human being, but he's a fine President who I believe is doing good things. I'd vote for him for a second term. While grimacing at every sordid detail of his private life that the press is going to dig up. They can dig, but his supporters will dig in harder, I believe. The press just doesn't 'get this'. We know their game. If they occasionally applied their dirt-digging to a Democrat they might have some credence, but no, never.

Going back to NYers, I've never met NGU, JJ, or CBD, (who I think are all from the city or it's environs) but I imagine they're probably the rare exceptions. Or maybe they live far enough from the epicenter to have clearer heads.

208 The Israeli attack on the USS Liberty was one I changed my mind on. I was convinced it was deliberate. Even based some of my actions while aboard a warship in the Eastern Med on that attack.

The reason for the attack on the USS Liberty was a lack of coordination between the Israeli Navy and the Israeli Air Force. The Operation centers of each service were neither co-located nor communicating.

The Israeli Air Force attack, to help out their Navy, was a friendly fire incident. Plenty of historical precedents, as Air Force pilots of every nation tend to have poor ship ID skills. The IAF attacked the wrong ship by mistake. Confirmation bias took over from there.

The US flag was not a factor in warding off the attacks.

The best book, and one that convinced me after years of thinking otherwise, is the well researched The Liberty Incident: The 1967 Israeli Attack on the U.S. Navy Spy Ship by Jay Cristol {former USN pilot and JAG} (2002). ISBN 1-57488-414-X.

227 I have decided that the Death Penalty shouldn't be widely applied - but I still see no argument against it in the case of killers such as Dylann Roof or the Ft. Hood shooter, where after they were arrested they both basically said "Yeah I killed all those people, and I'm glad I killed all those people, and if you let me out I'll probably kill more people."

There really are some cases where there is absolutely no doubt at all as to the facts of the matter - the two I just mentioned are a couple of them. When there is not even a possibility of a doubt, then I think it is still justified.

People don't yet quite grasp that if we refuse to invoke the death penalty when it's justified, we create a societal situation (which is already growing) in which it is better for all of us if a cop will just go ahead and kill a suspect on sight rather then arresting him. That's how most 3rd world police agencies function, but we shouldn't let ourselves get pushed there just because we're too squeamish to accept doing what must be done sometimes.

237 I change my mind often. And not just in the silly woman ways of "I think I'll wear this, NO this." Trump is the biggest example. I went from "he is just running for R nom to help the Dems" to " well if he wins he'll be better than Hillary but he is a NYC liberal and wants to expand gub'mint handouts (Ivanka's RNC speech)" to "WOW, this man is actively shrinking bloated gub'mint agencies and appointing conservative judges"

It is mentioned in comments above that Trump himself changes his mind often. I think a willingness to change one's mind when new information shows up is a very important good character aspect.

Look at the AGW scam. I initially bought into it. Scientists that worked at the same agency as I did were pushing it and my boss in a non climate study subgroup was meticulously honest. But then I found the WUWT blog, and there was the email hack that showed that key top players in that field were suppressing all papers that didn't advance their narrative.

It depends on if this is a philosophical point for him or just a gambit.

I'm also in the process of changing my mind about free trade with China. Back in the '90's when we were debating giving them permanent MFN status one of the arguments in favor was that increased interaction between us would encourage them to adopt our values. 253 Add me to the group that changed their minds on the Iraq war and neo-con arguments for creating democracies. You can't create democracy in countries that don't want it without pounding them into the ground first and ruling them for 10 years or more.
Containment, I suppose, is a better policy, perhaps with some attempts to turn a sadistic thug dictator into something else with the idea of keeping him from pounding various people in his country into dust after they p1ss him off and eventually getting him to lighten up on things, or to stop him from becoming Putin's, Xi's or Iran's sock puppet. We may have had a chance of doing this with Qaddafi in Libya at one point in time after he announced giving up his WMD program in 2003. Libya would be one less failed state.

Also, I go back and forth on the death penalty. We see too many cases of violent crimes where the wrong guy is jailed. But as soon as I arrive at the position that life without parole is a better choice there is yet another grisly multiple rape/torture/murder of a child and I'm back to "hangin's too good for 'em".

There actually are some crimes so heinous that society needs to let criminals know they will not escape with their lives if they commit. A jail term for someone otherwise becomes a lifetime of 'three hots and a cot' at taxpayer expense. While murderers get love notes from sick women and endless ACLU lawfare against taxpayers.

Not only that, but "democracy" is not something we should want. It is not a stable form of government and the Founders wanted nothing to do with it. They carefully crafted the American system of government so that it would *not* be a pure democracy.

But for the past 200+ years, America has steadily moved away from a republic to a democracy. Case in point: Why should welfare recipients be allowed to vote? They are incapable of running their own lives, so why should they have any say in running mine?

On this issue, it was getting pregnant that took me from pro-choice (without wanting to think too much about the details) to pro-life. Specifically, having several diagnoses about my kid from 17-20 weeks, with determination that he had heart defects (and nothing more, phew!) that required some major work. I also felt him move for the first time during this period. We were informed we had "options" and realized no, I am not God, and that it really wasn't my choice. Our choices were getting the best care we could find. Many years later I still shudder at the thought that we could have chosen to simply take a do-over.

When younger I thought of myself as a liberal. Even voted for Bill
Clinton once. But just weeks after his election I began to reconsider,
and when I started listening to Limbaugh in 1994 I realized I was never
actually a liberal, just been calling myself one.

With all the mind/opinion changing going on, it's necessary to remind everyone of an immutable truth.

Because of our political underpinnings and the faithful adherence to them we've been allowed to flourish to the extent of being the most exceptional country on the planet, populated by an extraordinary people.

We are called Americans.

And NO argument to the contrary will be entertained.

309 I used to assume that people who were homeless were just lazy. At the time, one of my coworkers inherited some really marginal properties from his father, nothing but shacks, that his father rented out to people. The coworker refused to rent out one of the shacks, because he was afraid someone would put their foot through the floor, it was in such bad shape. People called him night and day, begging to rent that property, because they had no where else to go. That was eye-opening to me. Now whenever I see someone pushing petitions to stop some low-income housing from being built, I just walk by.

312 G.W. Bush, John McCain, Mitt Romney, the GOP in general. They are the enemies of freedom, economic success, and national continuity of our constitutional Republic. They often say the right things, but actions speak louder than words. The change in my opinion came in steps as the GOP betrayed us in steps. As thet were given more and more of the government, their explanations for why they couldn't do what they said they would do became more and more lame and outlandish.

Discovering that the same greasy Republican consultants ran both the McCain and Romney presidential campaigns was the last of many straws. These are the con artists who threw Sarah Palin under the bus in '08 to excuse their own incompetence. Yet there they were again in '12, squandering money and clearly not caring if their candidate won or lost.

Convinced that the democrats would steal the last election and that the news was reporting at least accurate quotes from Trump that discouraged me from participating. Now I see exactly how far they'll lie whole cloth to kill our Constitutional Republic. Will never trust a journalist with anything but licking dogshit off my boots.

Have been convinced previously that Elmo Musk was a charlatan who was unable to produce a product that could compete in the marketplace so he was solely living off the government. Counterpoint is SpaceX which is both market and government (Tesla is not - it is a parasitical organization that is unable to exist without massive gov't subsidy). SpaceX can sell and does sell to companies. So he's 3/4 parasite, 1/4 businessman. Hey, not a big change but a change nonetheless.

326 The biggest issue that I've changed a deeply held belief about is Free Trade - and this was NOT because of Trump, but rather came about when I was pondering why the working classes in the UK supported Brexit so strongly, while the collegiate, professional, and managerial classes were so strongly against it. There was an obvious class division on the issue that transcended political party.

Before this, I had read enough economics to believe strongly that unfettered "Free Trade" was net good, and also I believed that it benefited all classes of society. What I came to believe while working to understand the Brexit vote was that "Free Trade" and "Open Borders" strongly benefits the professional and managerial classes - they are never going to face competition for their own jobs, and THEIR costs of living will go down as costs in general go down. For the managerial/professional class, "Free Trade" is a great benefit with no downside.

BUT for the working class, it isn't the same. These are the people who face job losses from both immigration and from the export of working class jobs, and who experience wage stagnation even if they keep their jobs. Since they don't have nearly as much disposable income, they are not benefited by even lower prices nearly so much as the wealthy professionals are. Working class costs are going to be primarily food, housing, and transportation, and the second two are going to be especially localized in nature and probably driven higher by an increased population and increased competition.

So, what I realized was that the question about "Free Trade" was not whether it was "good" or not; it was which class do you wish to support, the professional/managerial/business class, or the working class? Somewhere along the way, Trump figured this out as well, since this was at the heart of his appeal to Rust Belt America.

To this day, Paul Ryan and his fellow travelers still don't understand this.

340 I voted for Jimmy Carter in 1980. But a lot of young dopes like myself did.
The last major mind change I had was the whole concept of "regime change"--at least as far as the Mideast is concerned. I was all for the Iraq War. I trusted Bush and Cheney and Blair and I was sold on the idea that the time was right and it might be worth fighting for an oasis of democracy in the heart of the Mideast.
I was wrong--and while I blame both supporters and opponents of the war, I realize that the whole idea was domed from the start. In all but the most extreme circumstances, Muslims are not worth one drop of American blood or one dollar of American treasure. And it's a fool's errand to try to plant the seeds of democracy on a foundation of--literally--sand.

Related to that of course is that I have lost all respect for George W. Bush. Not only for that debacle, but for becoming mute from 2009-2016--only to suddenly open his mouth after Trump was sworn in.

369 Ha, reminds me of an incident with my husband. We were having our Saturday night YouTube jukebox, and he played "Freebird," and was talking about it being about being a free man, independent, all the good things in theory.

I laughed and told him it's just about a man who used a girl and decided he's done, time to move on, no commitment necessary. I realized as I was saying it that that song sums up the fallacy of the free love philosophy, which fucked up our generation and, consequently, our children's generation.

377 You can't create democracy in countries that don't want it without pounding them into the ground first and ruling them for 10 years or more. "

I believe that the core problem is that Arab civilization is still stuck at the feudal/barbarism stage, and thus only some version of a feudal government can ever keep the barbarians in line. (Like what Egypt has finally ended up with) Democracy in societies like that just guarantees endless civil war, since they don't have any group identity, just a series of tribal identities.

Everything has been tried in the Arab world - capitalism, socialism, communism, nationalism, Baathism (fascism), Democracy, Monarchy, Democracy. Every thing fails in its own way. To paraphrase the Demotivator poster, the only persistent constant in all of these failures is the Arabs themselves.

Exactly, and songs that really touched me now horrify me. Its depressing because they were so meaningful when I didn't really know the lyrics very well. And on a certain level, that's okay because music can reach you where you need it to even if its messed up. When my room mate in college got dumped by his girlfriend because he was basically a boozing lout and she was trading up for a better guy, he listened to Freebird over and over for solace.

Very good thoughts, all of them. I'm just c&p'ing the last.

As to appeal, I'm not so sure. I owned one of the more then 60,000 factories that closed in the wake of giving China Permanent Most Favored Trade Status. Barely escaped, got out early. Saw other people lose not only their factories, but their homes, their marriages, families, their health.

Sure there was some appeal, some hope for the future which drove them to the polls for Trump. But I suspect, even more a huge middle finger to the people who caused about five million people, predominately in the Rust Belt, to see their lives destroyed.

The same people who 'we' gave the middle finger to are still giving us the finger back again by obstructing Trump. I don't see an end in sight.

Last time I changed my mind? I voted for Trump but with a heavy heart. I was scared the next day, honestly. But now, the only thing I am afraid of is that something will happen to this amazing president and he won't serve out his eight years. CNN just did a video with Ohio (Dem) folks who are overjoyed too. We need at least that much time to right the ship of state.

Funny, but my overall change started when I took critical theory classes for a master's. 9/11 happened, and after accidentally listening to Rush and recalling my critical theory, I realized leftism was a totally stupid, evil power grab.

Another Old White Man, totally agree. Trump is results oriented. Former
presidents have used cheating and secrecy to gain power; he keeps his
promises to citizens. He makes W look like Jeb, and that's not a

387 Before the 16th amendment the US government was financed by tariffs and excise taxes, mostly on liquor and luxuries. That didn't provide that much income and it caused the government to remain small. The only problem was the corruption in the government that made those tarriffs and taxes apply to only certain sets of people and regions.

The bleating about not having enough body-bags to fill with dead American troops during the Gulf War due to superior equipment and tactics (Soviet) of the Iraqi army probably helped.

I remember the breathless predictions of 10k+ dead in the no-mans-land at the Kuwaiti border. Knew that number was bullshit, I expected maybe a quarter of that. It was a revelation to see how relatively bloodless the victory was, for us.

The problem with that is that we got used to the idea that all battlefields should be as bloodless.

Funny thing about tactics though, the Soviet-era armored warfare doctrines are actually quite sophisticated and effective. IF they are used by professional, highly-trained Western armies. To the point that the West's doctrines are largely adapted Soviet techniques.

Something interesting I've read recently of McGovern was that he was in a position to influence nutritional policy of the USA and pushed for the low-fat/low cholesterol cluster of fvck. Because of a diet he was on at the time.

Funny how many nutritionists resigned the Carter administration instead of instigating that policy. Because they knew it was wrong. Never made the front page of many newspapers.

443 I would agree that "Freebird" is just about a guy getting out after getting off except that a lot of Ronnie Van Zandt's lyrics DID deal with freedom and following your own path. Listen to "Simple Man." Or "Sweet Home Alabama" for that matter.
Also, "Freebird" existed in demo form for a couple years before it was recorded in 1973 as Van Zant struggled with the lyrics-- and the opening line, were inspired by a question guitarist Allen Collin's wife asked him---"If I leave here tomorrow, would you remember me?"

444 Historian Paul Johnson:

"I once thought liberty was divisible, that you could have very great personal liberty within a framework of substantial state control of the economy, but I don't mind saying I was quite wrong. The thing that finally convinced me was the issue of compulsory unionism. Labour today is so deeply anti-creative, so organically and instinctually lacking in any positive impulses, that it actually likes banning things or people, for its own sake. It's motto is: accentuate the negative. To ban, to boycott, to embargo, to exclude, blacklist, close down, shut up, silence, censure - these are the things which now come naturally to it, perhaps the only things it really knows how to do."

Obviously, that political party has changed. But the new rules are beginning to require large corporations to provide support not only in money, but also in fealty and virtue signaling to leftist causes.

I was quite amused and fascinated by Trump and I hated Hillary but as Scott Adams pointed out, the HRC campaign did a good job of using fear as a tool against Trump and I wound up voting for Hillary as the "safe" choice.(Something now I deeply regret.) When Trump won I was astounded and had to figure out how this happened. Long story
short, after doing a lot of reading(my favorite new thinker became Victor Davis Hanson, among others) and my own thinking I have come to actually like Trump for all foibles. I would now come to describe myself as a conservative constitutionalist federalist with a big streak of libertarianism.

457 The obvious example is Trump. I was pretty close to #NeverTrump in the primaries. But two things have happened. (1) The #NT brigade at NRO repelled me into being reasonable (and it helped that Roger Kimball - of whom I am a long time fan - came around quickly), and (2) Trump's performance in office has made a supporter out of me. I still don't exactly like his style. I'm from NY, and left because I don't care for people like that; it grates on me. But the effect it has on the libs is worth that, and more.

But the big change was finally giving up on Anglicanism, and going to Rome. I wasn't the ultra-high church type like Newman and Chesterton and Knox, where it was merely a matter of time. Actually closer to Lewis. But I ended up realizing I was wrong about history.

And of course, I've been in flux about the Battle of Jutland for a long time.

460 I changed my mind about Scientific American magazine right before the 2008 election when they ran an analysis purporting to show that McCain got better press coverage than Obama, intended to rebut the popular (and accurate) notion that Obama was getting a free ride from the press.

But they obscured the fact that the DATA WAS GATHERED THE YEAR BEFORE, when McCain was running for the R nomination as the media darling, and Obama was running against Her Inevitability for the D nomination. They buried that timeframe in the last sentence of the piece, with no context of what was happening at that time, so the majority of readers would have just passed over it as some technical stuff that was not important.

I cancelled my subscription.

Stairway to Heaven I'll grant you but Layla really isn't that great, especially that godawful guitar solo that's mostly off key and screechy.

The 2016 Presidential Campaign is when I was last persuaded to change my mind. Initially, I was dead set against Donald Trump.

It's funny, because Facebook has those "on this day" updates each day, where you can see what you posted "on this day" in previous years. Last year during the campaign, I would see my posts from 2015 about Donald Trump and they were 180deg from what I was posting about him in 2016. heh

His strong talk about immigration and border security, as well as not backing down against attacks from the Left (Democrats, Media, Hollywood, etc.) are what completely changed my mind about him. Especially the latter. That was probably the clincher for me. Been far past time the GOP had a leader who did not wilt in the face of attacks from Democrats and the media.

I sadly agree with you in general about the police and other law enforcement, but the Eric Garner case is one I changed my mind about, having been initially outraged because I was MFM'd into thinking he'd been strangled to death.

While I agree Eric Garner's arrest was extravagant for the offense (although it was resisting arrest that got him tackled to the ground, not selling loosies) he died of a heart attack because he was morbidly obese and unhealthy. Police can't know that a standard controlling move (a chokehold of 15 - 19 seconds) that would be briefly painful to another person would contribute to this one guy's death. His 27-year-old daughter also died of a heart attack.

When Trump fired Comey, I thought the firing was justified but that manner was ugly and unnecessary.
Then about four or so month later (whenever it was I heard that Comey was an unusually slimey SOB): I realized that the Comey's firing was not only justified, it was ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY.
Moreover - that as ugly as the manner of firing was - it was very important for Trump need to send a message to all others (especially the innumerable) D.C. swamp creatures that he was capable of playing rough and ugly.

Not long after I realized that it was in no way unnecessary for Trump to fire Comey in such an ugly fashion: my other realization that I had been wrong about something ALSO has to do with nasty bastard Comey.
During the 2016 Pres campaign when Hillary might have been indited by the FBI, the media (espeically Fox News) had convinced me that Comey was "a straight shooter" with impeccable integrity.
In fact, when Comey gave his (now infamous) presser clearing the Hildabeast about how her indictment would set an awful precedent to go after a former Secretary of State for taking her work home with her in the form of classified email: I ACTUALLY BOUGHT IT:: --- ::HOOK. LINE. and. SINKER. - - - :!
ugh. I am embarrassed to admit it. But I bout that nasty bastard's bullshit.

I now see that this bastard Comey was playing a nasty game and is ANYTHING but a "straight shooter".

Prior to my double Comey realizations, the last time I remember changing my mind about something was in realizing that Bush's decision to invade Iraq was HUGE mistake.
I had been a GIANT fuckin' cheerleader.
But once I delved deep into one of Pat Buchanan's books (I don't remember the specific title just now), I switched from being an ignorant, default Neo-Con to being a (hopefully not so ignorant) conservative.

PS: No, Patrick Buchanan is not in anyway anti-Semitic nor otherwise racist.

I enjoy football games more not being influenced by the talking heads and I spot fake news more than I ever did, and I've always spotted fake news, but now most of what is broadcast is false. There is no news, just propaganda.

I think the biggest change is I no longer have any faith in the legal system, the medical system or the intelligence system. I've see too much rampant corruption and too many things turned into political matters that are not political in nature. Also, too many political differences are being criminalized.

One more thing, growing up the slogan was never trust anyone over 30 years of age. Now I am distrustful of people 45 and lower. Too many of the youngsters are incapable of thought, they spent their formative years being propagandized and not being educated.

485 Giving to beggars:
I know (or I've read, anyway) that handing out unearned bucks doesn't actually help the poor and the downtrodden. "Give a man a fish" vs. "teach a man to fish" and all that. And it's true: and I believe it. Because of that, I used to only give through established foundations; my church, for instance.

But I got to thinking "so what?" Study after study has shown that a goodly number of these beggars are there by their own choice. And it's not mine to say how they should live - that's the very elitism that we argue against the GOP-e. I'm not discerning enough to be able to tell which beggar should be helped and which one shouldn't. So I give to them all.

The Good Lord also says "But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth." Nowadays I keep a stack of singles in my car to give out to any of the street corner beggars whom I encounter. Don't care what their sign says, or what their story is, or if they're hoodwinking me, or whatever. If I see 'em I give. Didn't used to: now I do.

i remember being a besotted Clinton fan in 1992, and then being completely disillusioned by 1996. i got disgusted when the lewinski scandal broke after that (i'm the same age as monica)...i was young (late teens/early 20s) so i don't take myself from that time too seriously

492 432 And I used to vote for the woman candidate, if I didn't know much about the candidates. In WA state, it's getting harder to find men on the ballot.

In many parts of WA state, it is getting harder to find Americans on the ballot.

If you want to know what the Venezuelan legislative bodies sound like, sit in on a Seattle City Council meeting.

I used to believe that liberals still believed in the history of America and the uniqueness of the Constitution and why it is so radically different than any other governing concept.

Henry "Scoop" Jackson was my ideal Senator. He was strong on national defense and a true friend of Israel. He was also a classic liberal, which meant you believed in the Constitution and Rule of Law, even for those who had little. Scoop protected their right to be heard. But he also based that concept that everyone is responsible for themselves, and be good to your neighbors and respect them.

That part about mutual respect is dead as roadkill in todays Democrat party. It is now all about abusing government power for your own payoff. The rest of us are just suckers.

Now I know for sure they despise the country that has given them their riches. They are just Socialists with really good restaurants, and served by the little people who cook and clean for them. And the others who don't have that money but believe the same way are foolish stooges, placemats for the next revolution.

The lower middle class left will be the first to be sacrificed, after the conservatives are sequestered and systematically degraded, as in any Communist system over the past hundred years.

But there are some key counterbalances that no other nation has. And God help us all if decent, fair Americans are forced to use that counterbalance.

493 I thought the Syrian chemical weapons incident was most likely one of the rebel groups playing politics to ensure the US would stay. Then the Russians issued their bizarre announcement that there was no attack and the British did it anyway, and now I think it was probably Assad after all.

494 I used to believe the GW refrain that every human craved liberty and freedom. I have been proven wrong.

495 The older I get, the less I understand. I'm at the point where I only understand John Wayne movies and my Cocker Spaniel, and I'm not too sure about the dog......... Jason J , Tucson

496 Trump - I was a Yuuge Ted Cruz fan, for years. When Trump became the nominee I voted for him as an act of sabotage against the eRepublican party, which I had left. As you all can plainly see I was soo wrong and had to reexamine my whole understanding of candidates for office. I don't know how Jeff Sessions saw what I couldn't, JEFF F-ing SESSIONS!!! Anyway, I missed the Trump train like the Titanic missed being unsinkable on the maiden voyage.
