I always wonder how she can wear those impossible heels she wears. Even when I was younger and trimmer, I could never wear heels that high. Heck, I don't know if they even MADE heels that high way back then.

R+B vs R is only winnable in certain positions. It came up recently in one of the big tournaments (and, I think on this thread) so I looked it up and even found the analysis on wikipedia. It is horribly tricky.

The 'ettes can appreciate this: I needed to go shopping for clothes to wear to a job interview, since most of my my work clothes are now too baggy to wear. (Goodwill is getting several big bags of plus size clothes tomorrow.) I had 40% off coupons for Boston Store and when I got there I found that they were having a buy one get one free Ralph Lauren Chaps sale,and I found a darling blue, pink and beige spring dress and a matching beige sweater which will do very nicely for an interview. And I found cute beige shoes on the clearance rack! A dress, two sweaters, a pair of dress slacks and shoes, all for $128! At full price I would have spent over $300. And it all goes together and can be mixed and matched! The weather is so shitty here today, but walking out of a store with a bunch of steals made this 'ette so happy.

There's usually a Spitfire at SoCal airshows, think it's based in Chino. And another rare British war bird, can't recall the name .... Sea Fury? That must be SoCal-based as well, it's always there.

This Lancaster is from Canada; there are only two of those planes that still fly. Not sure where the other one is based.
Talk to a Canadian military buff, especially one over say, 60, ask about the Avro Arrow that was developed in the 1950s, and you'll get an earful about how it was a plane ahead of its time but was scuttled by politics.

I mainly use my sewing machine for mending and alterations (relatively easy ones) these days. I'm the favorite mom of the homeschool group this time of year because I can hem dresses and sew on straps and make decolletage more modest.

Launches from Red Sea and Gulf. Means lots of over-flight of Saudi Arabia, possibly Israel, Jordan, and also Iraq. This still surprises me a bit. At least the cruise missiles can all approach targets from any point on the compass without too much trouble, regardless of where launched. So wonder why all the axes of attack.
DOD claims no interdiction by Syrian air defense, and no contact with Russian air defense systems. Claims Syrian SAMs fired mostly *after* attack was completed, some fired by sight, no guidance.
Wonder if this is first combat use of British and French missiles.

Yes, first combat uses of UK and French missiles. The French aircraft launched from the south of France! They needed a lot of airborne tanker support to get in the fight.
If you want to flood an air defense system actively looking for missiles, more than one threat axis is the way to ensure at least some hits. Most fire control radars have a narrow cone.
In all probability, no missile was hit. There was unspecified ECM in use by the Allied forces. Which was effectife.

Syria had just taken the plastic wrappings off of a brand spankin' new Russian-built air defense system and the Israeli jets blew past it like it wasn't even there. Looks like things haven't improved much.

Realistic testing using likely enemy air defenses is stressed at Red Flag in NV. The Brits, French, Israelis, and Saudis have all practiced there.
TOPGUN (One word, All caps, don't ask) stresses air-to air combat maneuvering. Not raids on defended targets.
STRIKE U in Fallon NV is where the USN use realistic air defenses for polishing up an air-groups pilots.

In general, all the tests of dense air defense systems in the last few decades have been US/western forces against Soviet/Russian defenses (at least the backbones and main systems). The score is pretty ugly for the defenses.
Of course the Russians would point out, and have a point, that some of these outcomes are directly attributable to local color, diversity, vitality, and cultural power in the countries using their systems. Ahemm.

Syria has always been one of the biggest problems in the arab world. First they were nasty Soviet clients and then, when that era ended they became Iran's butt-boy in the arab world. The only thing going for the chinless wonder is that the jihadists are actually worse than he is - which is no mean feat, that's for sure. But, all in all, there aren't any good people in Syria. The place is better off as a desert - and the world would be better off with it like that, too.

First I finally picked up Kira's grave marker and installed it in the back yard. It was ready in November, but the memorial place didn't have weekend hours during the winter and I couldn't get there during the week.
Then I cleaned up the leaves and branches in the back yard. I did the front yard a couple of weeks ago. It's amazing how much stuff accumulates during the winter.
Then I swept and vacuumed the garage and rearranged it so that the snowblower is put away and the lawnmower is ready for action. I then reattached the sharpened blade and started it up.
I also tried to start the weed whacker without success. I was pretty exhausted by that time.

Which is exactly the case here. I didn't write this up in the solution, but my chess app kept playing Rxe5+ immediately, and I couldn't figure out why until I played it from the Black side. The machine, being a machine, preferred Rxe5+ because the path to mate was longer.

220: The only old machine I have is my mother-in-law's machine from the 20s. It doesn't do much. I like the versatility of newer ones with more stitches and buttonhole styles, which is why I went with the new Janome for the treadle instead of hunting for an antique machine that I would not use.

I keep thinking (hoping) that sewing will make a comeback, the way knitting did. I saved a fortune sewing most of my maternity clothes and lots of clothes for my kids, and I sewed a lot over the summers in college too.

It's worth mentioning them sometimes because it's not always straightforward. But simplifying a position to a trivial mate like K+Q vs K or K+R vs K is usually where analysis for a line should stop, unless there is some potential for stalemate.

Don't be too hard on yourself, that kind of visualization where you can keep track of what squares are being covered/ attacked/ defended after different pieces move is one of the harder aspects of solving chess puzzles.
It's very easy to move a piece in your mind, and forget that it no longer attacks x or defends y. Especially because the information still being fed to your eyes says that it is.

Old and ugly is fine, long as it's sound and has some reasonable life left in it.
But, I need to get it cheap. Way cheap.
Even a treadle machine would work wonders, vs. hand stitching.
Just some more diversification on the means to make a buck, here. I've made some nice holsters for myself over the years, but there's no way to advance to do so commercially, profitably without a machine.
