US Border Patrol Says It's Woefully Understaffed, "Excited" to Have Help from National Guard

From Jazz Shaw, another case of the left, the media, and the NeverTrump Open Borders League being against any and all border/immigration measures that actually stand a chance of being helpful.

Federal agents on the front lines of the U.S.-Mexico border are "excited" about the forthcoming deployment of the National Guard to assist them in their mission, according to the employees' union, with officials noting that the extra personnel will help offset their being "woefully understaffed."
The guardsmen will serve in support and administrative positions, said Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, freeing up Border Patrol agents to go directly to the front lines. The National Guard can fill roles in a control room watching surveillance cameras, monitoring sensors, in skyboxes or scope trucks, Judd said, noting ideas that he has passed up the chain of command at Customs and Border Protection and drawing from his experiences during previous deployments.
"It frees up our resources and allows us to put more agents at the border instead of in support," said Judd, who has served as a Border Patrol agent for 20 years. "The National Guard is going to be a huge boon especially considering how understaffed we are."

I was in Indonesia when the tsunami occurred. Aceh, the province, was closed and remained closed for a couple weeks, but I went when it opened, three weeks after the event.

So, granted, this is too late for actual emergency services, but potentially there are those still hanging on that could be saved by medicine.

I'm coordinating two medical teams coming from the US. And people were absolutely throwing supplies at these teams--you recall how much people wanted to be able to do *anything* to help. So we have fully staffed surgery teams, doctors, nurses, interpreters, supplies, tents, the whole thing, self contained, en route.

I'm attending the coordination meetings in Medan; it's USAID, Red Cross, Australian military who was running the airport, everybody. 20 people in the room, all agencies you've heard of, and me.

I give Red Cross our details, resumes, everything, and just ask them to point us in a direction. They're getting the download from the US Navy who's flying helicopters all up and down the coast getting information on who needs to go where.

Three days later they finally get back to me and say, hey, just go wherever, we're not sure where to go and we don't have any teams ourselves yet.

So, yeah, not terribly impressive field ops.

82 I really enjoyed the National Geographic "Border Wars" documentary.

It was really eye opening. The BP guys on the Laredo, TX side can't go out without seeing glass flares from the houses just over the border in Mexico. Those guys are more watched than celebrities.

They also showed some of the current techniques for smuggling. One thing the smugglers do is shoot a package over the fence using an air cannon. Then they watch the package for a while, making sure nobody's near by. Then they go scoop it up and put it on trucks headed north.

The air cannon makes this big *fwoomp* sound, and at one point, a BP officer had the camera listen for a few seconds. You could hear *fwoomp*s a couple times a minute. Each of those were at least 10lbs of drugs.

A lot of people come over the border for day trips to El Paso, etc. A checkpoint outside the city catches those who try to take off and head further inland.

Also, people crossing the border on foot usually aren't walking all the way to their final destination. There's someone with a van/truck/car waiting to pick them up.

Actually, I think that that makes sense. Where to concentrate resources? In the area that has the greatest through-put. Sure, some illegals may travel over back roads, but I view the interstate checkpoints as the vertex of a funnel that has its large end on the border. Around here, most illegals are heading to LA, so the San Onofre checkpoint - with the ocean on one side, and Camp Pendleton on the other - is a perfect choke point.

From the BP website:

"The strategy of the San Clemente checkpoint evolved from line-watch activities and is tied directly to border enforcement activities. The strategic importance of San Clemente lies in its placement at a major route of egress from the immediate border, thus enabling the Border Patrol to provide a depth of defense beyond the international boundary and to effect broader border security throughout the border area."

So there I was, a young Second Class Petty Officer, driving a van load of Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force officers from 32nd Street Naval Station in San Diego to LAX to assist them in picking up some diplomatic pouch (to whit, a helicopter engine). I had to explain to them the "illegal alien family running across the freeway" signs. They thought the signs were hilarious, along with the fact that we got waved through the I-5 checkpoint without a second glance.

In the past I've run into them about 60 miles on either side of El Paso, on I-10. There's only 4 major roads leading out of El Paso, so it should be a pretty easy spot to cover. Not having traveled the two non interstate routes, I don't know if they have checkpoints or not - I know that they should.

So the only exercise you get is piling out of the cart, hitting the ball, piling back in, and then piling out again to look for the damned ball in the rough (in my case I shouldn't wear golf shoes, but hiking boots, and swim fins).
