Religious Literacy: What a week! [KT]

From Robert P. George on a recent WSJ correction:

Ladies and Gentlemen: I give you the case for Biblical literacy

wsjiraw.jpg

Religious literacy seems to have been an undercurrent this week at AoSHQ and elsewhere. Ace picked up on NPR's embarrassing definition of Easter. Heh. It adds another layer of confusion to the reporting about the Pope's views on hell. Which is already confusing enough.

Meanwhile,CBD highlighted this:

According to one 2004 estimate, since the 1970s Saudi Arabia has spent "north of $75 billion" on dawa - that is, on spreading Wahhabi Islam to non-Muslim societies. Many millions went to American colleges and universities willing to assist the kingdom. That they accepted the money is clearly a conflict of interests. Would they have accepted money from the Vatican to promote Catholicism?

J.J. Sefton has featured some great religious literacy content in his Culture Wars, Hither and Yon segments this week. Might want to save a link to Passover and the American Zion.

Freedom is forever in danger. Moses' instruction to his people as to the manner in which they were to celebrate the Passover indicates his comprehension of liberty as an eternal struggle. The matzah was to be eaten while we are standing with our shoes on our feet, in battle dress (Hebrew: hagor), with staff in hand ready to move as if we were actually participating in the ancient journey ourselves (Exodus 12:11).

Over at Maggie's Farm, there's something quite different, written by Bruce Kesler: Passover Answers Whether Jews Are a People or Just a Religion. You should really read the whole thing if the subject interests you:

The seder culminates with the affirmation, "Next year in Jerusalem," a reminder that the Jewish story that begins in Egypt ends in the land of Israel. A specific people bound to a specific land, for the ultimate sake of all peoples and all lands.

This week, as Jews around the world prepare for Passover, the war against Jewish peoplehood - against Passover itself - took a particularly ugly turn. A UNESCO resolution on Jerusalem denied any Jewish attachment to the Temple Mount and the Western Wall - the Wall was identified with quotation marks, unlike its Muslim term, Al Buraq.

The resolution - supported by, among others, Sweden, France and Spain, whose leaders profess friendship for the Jews - gives tacit legitimacy to the Palestinian terror campaign of recent months. It ignores the fact that Israel bars Jews from praying on the Mount. That Palestinian groups have systematically destroyed ancient Jewish artifacts at the site.

But most of all, the UNESCO resolution erases us from our own story. There were no temples on the Temple Mount, the Mount isn't the holiest site in Judaism, the Wall isn't the heart of Jewish prayer. Of all the attempts to destroy us throughout our history, the campaign against history itself is the most devious. . .

Wow. That is a REAL attempt to stamp out religious -and related historical - literacy.

Yes, this is the Thread before the Gardening Thread. Maybe you have some other topic you would like to discuss.

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

Have a great weekend.

34 Big subject ... while the heart of those that believe in God, (based on the Bible and their personal interpretations) is not tied to any one place, the history/heritage of a homeland is important.

Personally I give most credence to the agreed to decision in 1948 (?) to make Israel out of their "homeland", plus they fought to keep it (with a little help from a few Americans I guess). It's a done deal ...

Hopefully they are entering into stronger agreements with Saudis, Egypt, Jordan etc. that maybe brings more calm, despite Obama's best efforts.

But as important as it is for Jews and/or Christians to stand together for freedom (Israel as their place, America for Americans, allies) ... the heart of religion is personal liberty. The Gentiles which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, since always love of God is of the heart, in the spirit, not in the letter, but of God. (condensed Romans 2)

I'm working on my unified theory that ties OT and NT together, but there are still a few quarks to work out. But yes, we need to keep our Republic for American purposes as roughly defined (and fought for) by the founders. Israel seems to be a fairly direct parallel, in theory at least.

Which goes into the "the guy is an idiot" category.

The left doesn't have any clue what they're talking about when they accuse "the right" of being anywhere near the equivalent of a conservative political ideology.

"The right" is what the french called fascists in their midst, and much of the 20th century distinction between left and right was the battle between different versions of socialism.

I don't know how that concept got lost, but it is not just a gross oversimplification, it strikes me as an intentional lie perpetrated on, among others, American schoolchildren.

And it's not some sudden discovery of adult, responsible, reasonably courageous character among the elected drones of several counties and their sheriff's departments that has led to the emerging revolt against the "sanctuary" law. The county supervisors and city councils are feeling some kind of heat.

The country as a whole opposes amnesty, wants a secure border, abhors lawlessness on the official level. Yet ..... look at what our national legislature does on these issues.

There's a broken link between electorate and government on these and other issues. That's kinda sorta the whole thing with the Tea Party sentiment and amazing organic grassroots revolt. CA just has a very bad case of that broken link. A bit more to it than that, but let's get back to the illiterate CA-bashing that the HQ has now raised to a high art.

181 Jackso, Capt. Hate, and Palp - all three with good correct takes on parts of the problem.

Jackso, I've heard a lot of talk of exactly that - putting anti-"sanctuary" stuff on the ballot via proposition. So far, no action. In the short term, what we're starting to see is county- and city-level action of that sort. I'm a bit surprised the large number of non-moonbat counties haven't already jumped on this train - maybe it's coming.

Capt. Hate, seems part of the "broken link" is precisely what you talk about - donors vs. voters. And of course that's a yuuuuge part of Trump's appeal, and rationale, and extends beyond immigration but I think (like others including some controversial pundits) immigration is *the* key issue.

And Palp "replacing the electorate" is of course what's talked about all the time here and elsewhere, and it's happened in CA to a great extent. And not just with foreigners - legal or illegal - but generationally. It's been said many times before - death of aerospace in SoCal, disappearance of military from Bay Area, all as "education" and pop culture were taking a dramatic dive into idiocy. You put this on top of the historical passivity of CA voters in the golden era (precisely because things *were* very well run), and you have today.

188 The cowardice and stupidity of the CA GOP, and the sort it attracts to office (at least in coastal areas) cannot be overlooked in assessing the disaster out here.

When Trump visited San Diego recently, not only did the "Republican" mayor not meet with him, but served up his characteristic, jaw-droppingly pathetic mewling crap about "building bridges" and dissing border security (in a place that HAS border barriers, going on a few decades, and of course would be insane chaos without them). THAT is the level of idiocy of much of the CA GOP.

So when a voter ponders their choices ...... they often have none, in effect. And now, with the ridiculous new-ish system of two top vote-getters being on the general election ballot (every election is now essentially a run-off, with the second/final stage in November), there are literally no GOP candidates for many posts.

Let's see if the current mini-revolt against the "sanctuary" law builds - and if, in a dramatic change, the Trump administration takes serious action against CA - giving the sane, suppressed majority something to hang onto, and some implicit cultural tolerance for their horrible, hatey, racist-ey leanings ......

Posted by: rhomboid at March 31, 2018 01:00 PM (QDnY+)

189 And redc with the excellent, depressing reminder that the lawlessness of the judiciary, the collapse of the constitutional system nationally, plays a large role in CA's predicament.

Prop 187 (welfare for illegals), Prop 8 (marriage redefinition). CA voters being evil and hatey, by decisive margins, against the usual top-down mau-mau'ing. No problem! Lawsuit (without merit). State (lawlessly) refuses to defend, essentially default loss in lower court. State either doesn't appeal at all, or someone else appeals, and is denied standing.

Bingo! Obviously constitutional, entirely sensible decision by the actual voters is vacated, crushed, dismissed.

A lot of what is wrecking CA is national institutional degradation, which threatens every state, even magical ones like TX.

Should really see if anyone's checked this rigorously, but my impression is that SD is - by far - the largest major metropolitan area (top 10 in size) with a major military presence. Unique.

And, without further checking, the only such major metro with large military presence/history outside the south, or TX. And of course the only one in CA. This I think exerts some inertial drag on CA idiocy here. But a diminishing one, due to growth and continued dumbing-down of the populace (both adult and esp. kids in the "education" industry's control).

Yes, the hysteria over the term "Easter" derived from some pagan goddess is terribly anglocentric.

And parochial.

242 Why would someone call themself a Catholic if they were an Atheist?

Posted by: FenelonSpoke at March 31, 2018 02:38 PM (tpDAe)

243 There are lots of atheist Catholics.

They vote pro-choice.

Posted by: JAS at March 31, 2018 02:39 PM (sCN2W)

244 So all the origin of the word Easter proves is the Anglos really like to reuse old words for new things.

Also, the only reference to supposed pagan goddess Eastru is from a Christian hymn, I believe. No Old Norse parallels that I can recall. I've seen a theory that the name may be no more than a personification of Dawn, which makes sense.

Posted by: Grey Fox at March 31, 2018 02:40 PM (bZ7mE)

245 I wouldn't worry about the desire to call Easter "Resurrection Day" or "Pascha." Just say, O. K The important thing is that we're celebrating the glorious resurrection of Jesus from the dead. :^)

SD's military presence is actually DOD, not much industry any more. There is the (very quiet) drone/UAV industry here, which sort of replaced the conventional metal-bending aerospace sector (sort of - much smaller). And the even quieter UUV (robot sub) industry.

Genral Dynamics is still there.

Well, you can describe them anyway you want but I think that (if they're calling themselves Catholics) makes them people who believe in God but are against the stated theology of the church which is cleary pro-life from conception.

258 SD = San Diego, when I'm commenting.

General Dynamics, Lockheed-Martin - several of the few surviving huge merged defense contractors have a presence here, but it's nothing like it was up until the 80s. Economy is much larger/more diverse, population same, defense contractor sector is limited. I noted the major players above.

Actual uniformed military, + dependents, are the big presence now. Of course that was even bigger in the old days of a conscript Navy. But actual serving military is the biggest presence. Camp Pendleton, Miramar, Pacific fleet.

Retired population also still a big presence in SD County. Probably a bit less "conservative" than 20+ years ago, when that was also a factor in SD's non-moonbat politics.

Lots of wheels turning in this matter, as is often the case.

Just waiting to see if central coast (CaliGirl's hood) and Central Valley/rural counties will pile on here in revolt against Sacto and the racist-authoritarians.

I will deal with them too-just not as many. I look at it this way. They feel some sort of yearning to get in touch with the real meaning of the faith, or they go to make their family happy. Consider praying that they become active Catholics again who love the Eucharist and the beauty of the faith. If it's the second just think, "Well that's a nice thing to do that for their family and may they rediscover the beauty of the faith and the unchanging God who loves them and wants to be in relationship with them. :^) Because you never know-Your friendliness and smile may be a factor in their return to the church.

263 One of the more discouraging things I've come across, CA Catholics (I mean *active*, husband goes on retreats, they f***ing do CCD classes in their home - far far more seriously involved than most parishoners) who donate to PP. Oh yes.

Of course this is of a piece with their whole ignorant basis in politics - do they even understand the basic facts about things they are obnoxiously strident about? Generally, no.

These people are Planned Parenthood devout Catholics, who also were up in arms (properly) about teacher union insanity when their kids were in school. Gun owners.

And yet they are fanatical, FANATICAL Dem supporters - in a state where the Dem party has long been radically pro-abortion, where the teacher's union literally runs the party and the state (not really an exaggeration), and where shredding the 2A is reaching NJ/NY levels. NPR and MSM consumers.

It's enough to make one give up.

The central coast has been reliably left-wing for awhile now, and the valley is starting to turn purple. The foothills and the mountains are just about the only solid conservative parts of left of the state, and those are sparsely populated.

271 Just caught up on the Pope's latest mumble-fest.

Something is wrong. The man he was when he started in the position, and where he is now, are extremely different.

So, I think
-general dementia
-onset of alzheimers
-bad advisors

A combo platter of above.

Or, maybe he needs an Exorcism. I'm not kidding. Not after this latest ramble. I was shocked to hear Mother Teresa was put through one. Which made me angry. I figured she just needed anti-depressants.

I'm very, very skeptical about the whole exorcism thing. But it is the church, and their pope has gone rogue and is nothing like the original guy. And heck, if Mother Teresa was vulnerable, this pope must be.

I still am going with dementia and bad advisors. But this talk about "no hell" and vast difference with scripture makes me think of darker forces. And well, it's Easter weekend. If the pope is right, Jesus has gotta be wondering why he bothered with the whole cross thing. Jk
