1 Good Morning Morons; today is Saturday, March 31, 2018. On this day in 1774 the British ordered the port of Boston, Massachusetts closed pursuant to the Boston Port Act which Parliament had passed to punish Boston for the so-called Boston Tea Party.

2 Trump ordered the State Department to withhold $200M in funding for Syria 'recovery efforts' after reading that it was going to be issued in the papers. He says the US will reassess what is going on in Syria. Evidently Tillerson had committed this money without telling Trump.

From what I have seen in the past 40 or 50 years the leadership in the Catholic church has become hardcore socialist.

13 I guess Catholics like the shared misery of socialism. Helps to make the church more appealing to a larger group of people looking for sympathy. But sympathy is not salvation! Groups do not go to Heaven, each person must make their own choices.

Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Argentina (Pope Francis) is both the first Latin American pope and the first Jesuit pope.

The answer to why he is the way he is carefully hidden in the sentence above.

56 Subterranean, Major congratulations on your retirement. Mrs. JTB and I retired at the earliest opportunitt and it was one of the smartest things we ever did. Enjoy!

Now the two most common questions.
1. What will you do with all that time?
They ask this of people with many and varied interests; we have approximately 500 years worth of books in our 'to read soon' piles; we have more hobbies (inexpensive ones) than you can count. Makes me wonder if these people have a life outside their jobs.

2. When are you going to move?
The presumption is retirees will sell their houses which are long paid off, leave friends, familiy, and communitities they know and move to some place with lower cost of living, taking on new debt to do so. People ask this as if it were universal and, possibly, a Constitutional mandate.

There's a third question, actually. "So, you gonna get a part time job somewhere?"

That's not what purgatory means. It's not a 2nd chance, but really a stop on the way to heaven. Everyone in purgatory is already saved, it is the process of purification.

You don't have to believe it, but if you reject it, know what you are rejecting.

72 Skip - Prager is dead on with that statement. I posted this on the ONT but it's worth sharing again. I went to one of those new age churches with the rock bands, lighting and auditorium style seating for Good Friday.

The whole service was basically the and singing about Jesus while some dude painted four of the stations of the cross followed by voice overs which kinda sort explained the station he just painted but not really.

The pastor or whatever he's called was on stage less than the band was. I felt like it was a concert.

On one hand it's good everyone is there worshipping Byron the other who knows what goes on Sunday to Sunday. It was all too feel good for me and not enough challenge to the parishioners to be better followers in Christ.

Think Hillary and her deplorables comment. No hope for us there even though he was hired not appointed. The parish members that run the congregation, not the council itself, but the behind the scenes power structure agree with him and encourages him. Horrible situation. Has one Sunday where a congregant tried to refute him during the sermon and the priest basically told him it wasn't the time or place to discuss it. He could drop whatever crap he wanted during Mass and we just had to take it. We said no and left.

I doubt he means much of anything distinct in that area. The real problem is his intolerance of any who even ask for clarification. He has an Obama-like approach to running things. That can do serious harm.

80 76 logprof. The Pope is bad but it has emboldened parish priests to spout whatever drivel comes into their heads. Had to leave our last parish due to the extreme sjw attacks from the pastor.

There are a lot of empty churches when that happens-- orthodox communities have said they are getting a lot of former catholics converting.

"Has one Sunday where a congregant tried to refute him during the sermon and the priest basically told him it wasn't the time or place to discuss it."

Our priest is a local boy, so he knows his congregation well and the conservative mindset. He told me that behind closed doors there is war going on with the local parishes and the boys in Rome.

The church will endure, as it always has, and the old jesuit commie will slip his mortal coil and be no more.

And a child shall lead them - right off a cliff.
Yes, it was all interesting to have proof that Lefty groups had a plan to exploit the next school shooting for various reasons - de-legitimize the NRA, fire up their base before an election, etc. It shows a level of planning, logistics, and ability to adapt. The choice of spokespuppets shows a real problem with that sort of plan. When you are quick to exploit an opportunity you have to go to war with what you have, not what you may want. In this case the spokespuppet is not staying on topic or focused. Making demands and randomly attacking people who may be lukewarm allies or neutral at worst will drive away support because it is annoying and unattractive. The phrase "who the hell do you think you are" comes up pretty darn quickly when someone starts making arrogant demands of others.
The media machine will keep running, that isn't a really good gauge, but I think support will fall off pretty quickly otherwise.

That's not what purgatory means. It's not a 2nd chance, but really a
stop on the way to heaven. Everyone in purgatory is already saved, it is
the process of purification.

You don't have to believe it, but if you reject it, know what you are rejecting.

- - -

Doesn't work, sorry.

1. One cannot be saved and still have sins that are unforgiven. "Saved," as Paul used it with reference to forgiveness of sin, means one is SAFE in Christ because he's been justified and forgiven ALL sins (Col 2:13; Rom 8:1). The only alternative is that his sins remain unforgiven, which means he is NOT saved but bound for Hell. No middle ground, no third option.

2. Remember that there was only one perfect Lamb of God, and that Lamb was sacrificed once, never to be repeated. God accepts no other sacrifice.

3. By virtue of the Cross, God accepts all who place their faith in that sacrifice for their sins (which they are powerless to atone for).

The point:

To say purgatory burns off sins, purges sins, purifies sins...is to say the sinner *himself* can atone for his own sins which were not forgiven in Christ...else they'd already have been forgiven and forgotten by God and there'd be nothing LEFT to purify.

That is why the notion of purgatory is a blasphemously false gospel...it not only denies the complete and perfect work of Christ for all who will trust Him, but elevates suffering sinners -- imperfect sacrifices unacceptable to God --to the level of atoning for their own sins. It's a demonic doctrine.

Bottom line: none of us can atone for our own sin nor purify ourselves by any amount of suffering.

If we could, then Christ died for nothing.

Woohoo! Way to go, fluffy.

My "birdies" are nearly out of the nest and I'm just starting to think about going out for a "real" job!

As for the pope, "Ye wrestle not flesh and blood and principalities..." There's BIG TIME EVIL working in the Vatican, namely around those who convinced Benedict that he could resign. Popes DO NOT resign. Ann Barnhardt can give you chapter and verse on Canon 188. Benedict is still the true pope; Red Frankie is the antipope.

Anyone recall the picture that was on the front page of Drudge of the lightning strike at the Vatican when this whole sleazy transfer of power (to a leftist, of course) occurred?

Anywho, Frankie is operating on only one lung, so it's odd that his "papacy" is lasting this long. As for the Vatican constantly covering for him, those who conspired to "elect" him (he was decided on long before the conclave) cackle with glee every time he says something heretical. Barnhardt has a huge gang of followers who fast twice a week in hopes the Lord will speed his exit.

101 Yep. Progressive hate you, think you should not exist, and will stomp on your throat and feel righteous while doing so.
They are also the same people who are working relentlessly to disarm you.

The labels they use to describe themselves don't really matter; Nazi, Communist, Progressive etc. The thing to remember is that they are all just bigots. The reason they hate people who aren't bigots is that our continued existence serves to remind them that a bigot is really the lowest form of humanity. In bigotry they substitute arrogance for confidence. Historically it is necessary to slap bigots down from time to time. This is what the civil war was all about. It was what ending segregation was all about.

The usual game plan of the bigoted left is to pick out a minority, demonize that minority, and oppress them. The last time that the bigots were slapped down was in the 1950s and 1960s with the ending of their Jim Crow laws.

Gun owners have simply replaced blacks as the target of bigoted attacks. Two ways to slap the bigots down. 1. The way it was done in the 50s and 60s by proper application of law. 2. The way it was done in the 1860s - by brute force. Their choice.

There can be forgiveness and yet still a need for punishment, as any parent can attest. So all the sins of a person are forgiven before entering purgatory. Prayers for the dead are well attested in early Christianity, which implies purgatory.

132 I'm not a RC, so I have no dog in this fight, but I can relate in that I don't always agree or like the things the head of my denomination says either. My encouragement to the Catholic folks-and they know this- but I'll say it anyway. Popes come and go. Some are better than others. Some are really stellar-such a, IMOs John Paul II. Some were really corrupt and licentious. This is some advice from a book by a Protestant minister. but applies here too:

A minister (Our Ope or priest) may be a made a man of power by prayer, and he may be made bereft of power by people failing to pray for Him. Don you have a pastor you don't like, a pastor who is perhaps inefficient or does not clearly know or preach the truth?. Do want a new minister.? I know how you can get. Prayer for him until God makes him over. Do you have a minister you do not like? Do you wish him to be even better; do you wish him to be far more effective than he is today? Pray for him until God gives him new wisdom and new power

from "The Power of Prayer" by R.A. Torrey

And as far as the Pope, how often does the Pope personally affect your life? He doesn't come to your local church, does he? Yes, it's disheartening to hear things that seem to go against the faith, but look to Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of your faith. Look to Jesus present in the Eucharist. lpractice prayer. read the Scripture. Look to the Saints and their intercession. Finally, Stay in Love with God!. :^)

150 grammie. I do worry about the damage. Of course the closest approximation to it is what happened under 8 years of Obama and the decades of leftist indoctrination everywhere. What the Catholic Church needs is a clerical Trump, minus the divorces and the alleged mistresses. Which of course should be a given since priests are not allowed to marry. But who knows anymore, that may have been relaxed as well.
I'm thinking if Rome goes back to someone like John Paul II we have a chance. Just do not know enough about the cardinals and what they will do next.

And if this group of reportedly more than 1,500 gets across the border, then they'll each be entitled to asylum hearings before they can be deported, which means it will take years and millions of U.S. taxpayer dollars being spent before any of them can be deported. Meanwhile, they'll be calling their other family members back home, telling them how easy it is to stay in the U.S., and many more will be making the trip.

We have to do something about the asylum scam. Letting foreigners set up residence here (and get on welfare rolls, which "refugee" status entitles them to do) just because they claim they're "afraid" of the gangs in their own country, or because they're poor, is absolutely insane.

We have plenty of poor (and unskilled and uneducated and chronically unemployable due to alcoholism, drug addiction, whatever) here already. We don't need to import them from other nations. And we also have plenty of gang violence here already too, thanks to decades of refusing to enforce our immigration laws.

It is ludicrous to think that we're "helping" people from violent, third-world shitholes by letting them come here and turn this country into a violent, third-world shithole.

And the left's insane belief that because the U.S. is "rich" we can somehow afford to let unlimited numbers of poor foreigners come here and life off of us is going to destroy all of us. We have $21 trillion in debt, hundreds of trillions more in unfunded liabilities, we're running up new trillion dollar deficits every 6 months now, and there is no end in sight to any of this. But you can be sure that if this latest wave of foreign freeloaders makes it to the U.S. border, the left will be screaming that anybody who tries to stop them is a raaaaacist and a h8ter and a baby-killer.

The University of Rochester student government adopted new policies this week that require all gender-specific student groups to complete a burdensome annual waiver process requesting permission to maintain that status.
The policy would directly impact not only fraternities and sororities, but also sports teams, which would risk the loss of funding and institutional privileges if their waivers were to be denied.

clear that Mass is a serious matter. No politics from the pulpit either.

211 201... Good morning, grammie. I agree about preferring physical books, especially for Lewis and some others. But you can't get used copies of the signature series at that price. I am tempted to get them anyway as a backup to my dead tree versions. And there are a few (cough Vic cough) who prefer e-book editions.

I recently watched a speech by David Horowitz at a conservative gathering (did not notice where) but the audience seemed dumbstruck and clueless at who the Left was and what they were doing. Kept oohing and gasping at the most basic truths. We have a long way to go.

Oh, no doubt of that, at all ... but at least we are starting to get movement.

214 I know a lot of people who think Frankie is the antichrist. We've had popes who were venal, spendrthift, selfish powerhungry jerks - they sold indulgences and cardinals' hats - but even they had the humility to leave doctrine alone and not confuse the faithful and non-Catholics alike.

Posted by: vivi at March 31, 2018 09:22 AM (11H2y)

215 140 I suspect we are heading for a Catholic schism. Yes, another one, like the last time we had two popes.

For those who want a high-church approach with some maor continuity, either Greek or Russian Orthodoxy is looking really good right now.
Posted by: perturbed at March 31, 2018 07:56 AM (6Duxi)

Greek and Russian, as well as some others, are the same religion, just with different governance and some different cultural customs. An Orthodox person can take communion in any canonical Orthodox church.
There are some advantages in not having a centralized systems like the Romans do. Very very hard to get things changed, which these days can be a good thing.

On one hand it's good everyone is there worshipping Byron the other who knows what goes on Sunday to Sunday.

I was thinking: "Worshipping Byron"? Do I need more coffee?

--> On one hand it's good everyone is there worshipping, *but on* the other who knows what goes on Sunday to Sunday.

218 My priest thought so.

I don't know exactly how he feels now but he does seem to believe in much of his recent statements. But we have our very own at the head of our local diocese. He's quite marxist and promotes this nonsense. Except I don't know about the no hell issue, since no priest wants you to think there is no hell.

219 I knew something was wrong with Francis at his first Easter Vigil. He looked at his watch and clearly wanted to rush that great service. . . . Or at least it was great until he got ahold of it.

There's a third question, actually. "So, you gonna get a part time job somewhere?"

Posted by: JTB at March 31, 2018 06:30 AM (V+03K

That's because people 15 years down the pipeline, unless they have a sweet union or government pension, can never imagine themselves not working. I'm pretty sure I'll be working until the day I get let go, get too sick, or drop dead. Just the way it is.

I'm so happy that my mother was able to retire at 62 and live the last 16 years of her life puttering in the garden, painting, and spoiling the grandchildren, but I don't see that happening for me.

223 I'm not a Catholic, but one would have thought the College of Cardinals would have selected at least one actual, orthodox Christian for the Papacy on the last conclave. It seems they utterly failed to do so based on this last interview. Last time I checked, official Catholic doctrine espoused a belief in a literal hell.

227 I AM a Catholic. Think of this as the Last Gasp of the Felt-Bannered Leftists in the Church.

Those that follow are not NEARLY as doctrinaire, nor as a-religious.
