Easier Problem - White To Play (627)

Just looking at this position, I'm sure that most of you morons can see that it's likely to be a mate of some sort -- and you'd be right. White has too much firepower bearing down on Black's kingside and Black's big guns are on the other side of the board out of the fight. So the question for you is, in how few a moves can you force the mate? Your answer should be of the form:

"I can mate Black's king in 'X' moves:"

And then show your moves, from 1 to X. Make sure either the moves are forced, or all variations are accounted for so the number of moves, X, is not exceeded.

Hint: One of White's moves prevents Black from making a stubborn defensive move and brings quick victory

This is so cool:

After a 46-year wait, we have an American challenger for the World Chess Championship. 25-year old Saint Louis resident Fabiano Caruana won the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2018 in Berlin in style. Fabi only needed a draw in the 56th and final game of the tournament, but he won to finish a full point ahead of the field. “I thought it would be a shame to not play this position especially since it was so automatic,” Caruana said of his final round victory over Alexander Grischuk.

Fun fact: Caruana was born in the same year (1992) as my youngest son.

I "followed" the last few moves of his last-round win against Grischuk, but I had no idea what they were doing or why they were doing it.

Somebody on Twitter (I didn't save the link) posted a snippet of an interview of Magnus Carlsen from a short while ago and he was asked who would he prefer to play as a challenger. Carlsen said he would prefer somebody very strong, because that would motivate him to play his absolute best. He then said "Caruana would be perfect."

So it looks like he's going to get his wish.

Meanwhile, the Guardian (UK) reports that the site of the World Championship match may be changed from London to St. Louis, MO:

The first American-born challenger since Bobby Fischer defeated Boris Spassky in 1972 lives in St Louis, which has become a renowned global chess centre hosting inter alia the US championship and an annual elite event in which both Carlsen and Caruana compete. The billionaire Rex Sinquefield bankrolls it all and was financially responsible for Caruana...

Four-time US champion Yasser Seirawan, a Sinquefield confidant, said that a St Louis bid would be “significantly higher” than the €1m in London, which may be in some doubt anyway, since it was raised from primarily Russian sponsors before the Berlin result was known.

(Yeah, I know the Guardian is a commie rag, but their chess coverage has always been good.)

The Carlsen-Caruana match for the world title is scheduled for Nov. 2018.

(P.S. By sheer happenstance, Caruana and Carlsen met in the first round of the just-started Grenke Chess Classic. The result was a draw.)

Easier Problem - White To Play

20180331 - Problem 1.jpg
r1r3k1/pp3p1p/4bp1Q/7p/8/3B1P2/PPP5/1K1R4 w - - 0 1

Black's position has gaping holes. The question is, how best to exploit them. One try is:

1.Rg1+ Bg4
2.fxg4 h4
3.g5 f5
4.Bxf5 Rc4
5.Qxh7+ Kf8
6.Re1 Re4
7.Rxe4 f6
8.g6 h3
9.Qf7#

A win is a win, no question about it. But here is the fastest way to mate:

1.Bxh7+! Kh8

Now, that discovered check looks promising, but where to place the bishop?

2.Bf5+!

Otherwise, Black would be able to move his bishop to g4, thus closing off that open file and, from White's perspective, gumming up the works. In chess lingo, this is known as a "prophylactic" (really!) move.

2...Kg8
3.Rg1#

So the fastest is a mate in 3.

More Challenging Problem - White To Play

20180331 - Problem 2.jpg
1kr5/5p2/Qnq5/3R2b1/8/8/PPP2nBP/1K2R3 w - - 0 1

Black is defending b7 with his queen. If it wasn't, White could play 1.Qb7# and the game would be over. So how can White exploit this?

1. Rc5!

There are a number of squares the black queen can skedaddle to, but three of them will result in quickie mates:

a) 1...Qd6 2.Qb7#
b) 1...Qd7 2.Qxb6+ Qb7 3.Qxb7#
c) 1...Qa8 2.Bxa8 Nxa8 3.Rxc8#

1...Qxg2 is an interesting try, but the result is the same:

2.Qxb6+ Qb7
3.Qd6+ Ka8
4.Ra5+ Qa7
5.Ree5 Bd8
6.Reb5 Bxa5
7.Qd5+ Rc6
8.Qxc6+ Qb7
9.Qxb7#

Black's best defense is actually:

1...Ne4

But then he has to continually give up material to stay alive:

2.Bxe4 Qxe4
3.Rxe4 Rxc5
4.Qxb6+ Kc8
5.Qxc5+

If you've reached this point, you can declare victory in having solved the puzzle; White's material advantage is so yuuge, the rest is just mopping up. But it will be mate in 7 more moves:

5...Kd7
6.Qxg5 f5
7.Qxf5+ Kc7 (if 7...Kc6 then 8.Re6+ Kd7 9.Qf7+ Kd8 10.Re8#)
8.Qf7+ Kb6
9.Qg6+ Kc7
10.Re7+ Kd8
11.Qe8#

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and past it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

No, but he's conservative af! I've been meaning to do a chess thread item about him, but have been too lazy.

Progressives (like the Guardian scribblers) write about him with the same thinly-veiled contempt that they usually reserve for the Koch brothers, or, in years past, Richard Mellon Scaife.

Ah, OK. I wasn't sure if there was some canonical master list or something. When I run out of free daily 'tactics' drills at chess.com, sometimes I'll go hunting for other daily problems and they vary wildly. The chess.com ones are good (at my level) for 'do the smart thing, look for the best moves' but some of them - especially the ones derived from master endgames - are just incomprehensible to me. One involves a promotion where promotion to queen is a stalemate two moves later, but promotion to a rook is a checkmate and I still can't figure out why.

Finding an 'easy' problem is, well, easy. Mate in 2 or 3, done. When finding a 'challenging' problem, I have to walk between making it too easy and too incomprehensible. My rule of thumb is, if I don't understand it even after going through the solution, I won't use it.

50 I'm pretty sure the Chinese invented the firearm.

That is actually a much debated question. They certainly invented gunpowder and rockets, and used something called a firelance (basically a Roman Candle type firework tied to a spear), but whether they actually made the leap to using gunpowder to fire a projectile out of a tube is still not settled, I think. The early texts use ambiguous terminology, and the earliest cannon are very close to the same date that European handgonnes show up.

What isn't in doubt is that they never really developed it. They never used anything more sophisticated than a matchlock, as far as I know, and even those were not a Chinese invention. One reason why is that early cannon simply were useless against fast-moving horse-archers, their primary opponents at the time, so there was little incentive to continue messing around with them. In Europe, where siege warfare and heavily armored men were common, early handguns were useful early on, so it was worth the time and expense to develop them further.

Yeah ... the Chinese pretty much used gunpowder to make pretty fireworks. They did a little bit with field rockets but generally didn't leverage their invention. This happened with lots of Chinese inventions. They had movable type hundreds of years before the West but the Chinese never did much of anything with it. No one else would have even heard of a printed book had it not been for the West.

Just the basic difference between cultures. The Chinese are, and have always been, all about stability. THe West, all about advancement and growth. The first thing the Chinese did when they unified the kingdom was to build a big wall. The first thing any Western society did in consolidating power was to try and take over the world.

We did get lots of Chinese inventions making their way to outsiders, but mostly those were just thanks to the Mongols and their expansionist drive. Of course, with the Mongols as the carriers ... you had to take the bad with the good

Not necessarily. The Brits thought that it was cowardly for the Colonial troops to hide in the woods and ambush them instead of fighting in formation.

It used to be thought cowardly for combatants to use crossbows since they didn't require the same training and skill as it did to use bows. Of course, it was the side with all the archers who made those claims.

And, Bill Maher famously disputed whether or not it was cowardly for terrorists to blow up civilians as compared to Americans using cruise missiles.

There is a long history of people complaining about the use of technology instead of facing their opponents in open on the battlefield. Usually, it is the ones who are at a technological disadvantage who are complaining about the tactics of their opponents.

If it is more manly to stand up face to face with my enemy and give him a fair chance to kill me, as opposed to just taking him out from afar, call me a coward. A live and victorious one.

I solved it but I don't get it, either. There is no difference, at the point of promotion, between taking a rook or taking a queen. It can't be a stalemate because black's rook can still move freely.

Are you sure it isn't a mistake? Maybe there's no problem with promoting to a queen but you can mate with the rook, so the least promotion is the "correct" answer?

[Narrator]: 'Kx7' is not a well-formed designation of a chess move.

Apologies. The problem was solved at the same time as my original post, and I'm preoccupied with The (admittedly off topic) Hogg Problem:

How is it that Hogg:

1. has produced a couple of videos, wherein he is "at school, taking cover, and whispering his narration" (while, apparently on the same video, a woman's voice is speaking noticeably louder ... but where are the other students in the room? When was this video taken?)
and
2. is able to specify the time (3:12 or so) and who the shooter is (while the news reports indicate that 3:15 is the earliest time that someone names Cruz)
3. while apparently no other students are in the video
and
4. he says that "they" (him and others with him) have "heard gunshots" (which indicates that neither he nor anyone with him have actually seen the shooter)

and then later, in his interview (where is surrounded by his friends and speaks to a friendly audience, so he has every reason to tell the truth) says:

"On the day of the shooting, I got my camera and got on my bike and rode as fast as I could 3 miles from my house to the school, to get as much video and get as many interviews as I could ... cause I knew this could not[?] be another mass shooting."

... meaning, he was NOT at school when he heard about the shooting ... and, why go home for a camera, when he clearly had one with him (his "survivor" video from the "classroom" ... and virtually everyone else had a camera anyway ...

Why is no one (other than a few YouTubers) grilling Hogg on the apparent mutual-exclusivity of his statements?

Why is no one asking any neutral third-parties to verify Hogg was inside the school between 2:00PM and 3:00PM?

Exit Note (In case I'm asked):

Big news this week is Far Cry 5 is on its way.

Jim Sterling's impression is: UbiSoft formula, an 'ungainly open world'
youtube.com/watch?v=8S38nMeg7O0

I'm avoiding FC5 because the publisher signaled against #gamergate back in the FC4 days, and FC5's villains are white gun-toting Christians in Montana. It was in development when it looked like Hillary was going to win. I expect UbiSoft was prepping the battlefield for a public move against gun owners in the West.

The game has no reason to exist in Trump's 2018, so it's basically boring Jim Sterling.

Black can threaten checkmate, and if his rook is captured by the queen, and in combination with the knights placements it will stalemate the black king.

1 Nd6 Kd3
2 b7 Rxa2
3 b8=Q Re2+
4 Kd1 Rb2

White cannot check with the knights, taking the rook with the queen is stalemate, but the queen must also stay on the b file to prevent 5...Rb1#, so it must be exchanged to the black rook and the board is drawn.

By underpromoting to rook, black cannot set up this position because 5. Rxb2 is not a stalemate.

5. Qxb2 Draw by stalemate!

Promtion to Q instead of R blocks d4 for Black.
If the Q moves to avoid capture, ... Rb1 mates.

(The comment from the referenced thread)
1. Nd6+! Kd3!
(1... Kc5 2. b7And the pawn queens. 2... Kxd6 3. b8=Q+)
2. b7 Rxa2 3. b8=R!!
(3. b8=Q? Re2+ 4. Kd1forced 4... Rb2!! 5. Qxb2Draw by stalemate! (5. Qc7 Rb1+ 6. Qc1forced 6... Rxc1+ 7. Kxc1forced - Book draw. The two knights cannot force checkmate.) (5. Qd8?? Rb1#))

The comments on the next to last page explain it.

1) b8 (Queen) Re2+
2) Kd1 Rb2

Black rook gets in a position where it threatens mate AND the white Queen, but if white queen takes the black rook then the black king can't move. If it's only a white rook from the promotion, then white can take the black rook and keep playing to mate.

Of course, white could take the promoted queen to b5 to check the black king and force black to trade its rook for the white queen. Then white has 2 knights left. Can you force a mate with a king and two knights? I would think so.

Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at March 31, 2018 06:00 PM (8gDQu)

103 Oh, that endgame is devious. Look at this:

1.Nd6+ Kd3
2.b7 Rxa2
3.b8=Q Re2+
4.Kd1 Rb2

and Black just forced a stalemate, If the queen does not capture the rook, it is Black who checkmates. But after queen takes rook, it's stalemate!

That is kind of a myth, actually. The colonial troops didn't do that during large battles and in skirmishes both sides fought that way. The "don't target officers" mentality is a bit of a myth, too.

What the British didn't like was colonials sniping their sentries and faking surrenders to catch the Brits off guard.

The year:2022
The Place: New York City
The population: 40,000,000

But the fact is that the film was shot live in Mexico City in 1971, just out on the streets without any props or preparation or anything. They had to knock a bunch of sombreros off (to make it seem like America) but that was about it.

Know you asked Bander, but here is what a quick search turned up:

https://tinyurl.com/y8cef3xf

For myself, one of the things that Gibson really tried to portray in the film was this idea that the Sin of Man is this massive weight that Christ is taking upon himself. Throughout the film, the Lucifer/Satan figure is trying to both mock and stay Christ's hand in this task. In the Garden, it tells him "No one can take it all." So Lucifer is trying to drive home the fact that not only is Christ's actions futile, but that Humanity does not deserve it. The Scourging scene is one of the most graphic parts of the film, but it is a microcosm of the whole film in showcasing human Sin and cruelty- the reason for Christ's actions. Satan is trying to stay God's hand in that moment, by mocking him for even attempting to save these barbarous savages.

Yeah, there's a discordance there. The hair and make-up scream Las Vegas while the dress most definitely does not. And there's a simple rule that you never do big hair with a big dress.

Honestly, I think the dress, though beautiful, is awfully hard to wear. You have to have a fairly delicate face and bone structure to avoid looking like an upscale milkmaid. OTOH, if you're too fine, you'll be swallowed up in fabric.

The second-to-last model ---the one in the burgundy dress--- could have pulled it off, assuming she kept the same hair and make-up.

Posted by: Ben Had at March 31, 2018 06:43 PM (0VeQs)

The page I linked certainly takes that view.

This is just opinion, but this is also a very Catholic movie. Imagery/Iconography is very important. Mary holding the infant Jesus are very definitely a very iconic feature of Christ in that imagery.

This could also be looked at as Satan/Lucifer saying that while Jesus was held so tenderly and was the Child of Mary, Humanity is IT'S (Lucifer's) 'Child' in the extreme moment of his torment.

Just my spin on it. The movie is designed to make you think about these types of things, and I do not think there is necessarily a 'Right' answer.

"Even if lawmakers have policy disagreements with DeVos, her proposals
deserve to be heard-especially at a time when the federal debt has
surpassed $21 trillion and Congress limps along from one shutdown crisis

The way I read it is that he wanted to do it himself. The movie to an extent is an indictment against the evil of Man. "We drive the Nails ourselves." is kind of a powerful statement.

The #resistance seems to be chock full of money. Let's take away a couple dollars a month from their Folger's Crystals Food Stamps and see if they notice.

I don't find assignments relaxing at all. What I like is bashing monsters or solving puzzles for an hour or so after work.

I played HOURS of Okami (haven't finished yet) and Final Fantasy XV because I could run or ride birds around pretty landscapes with nice music and occasionally beat the crap out of demons or wildlife.

I used to do the same thing with my nephew's Kingdom Hearts on PS2. "Here, let me grind up a level while you go and ride your bike."

Ha! No kidding!
There was a period of about 5 or 6 years in there, ca. 2008-2013 or so ---I don't remember--- when those platforms were all the rage.
UGH.
They were bad enough when nude-colored but absolutely hideous when black. Horse hooves!

hi Aetius, and all!

It is a powerful statement. If you think about it, everytime I decide to sin, I decide to inflict another pain on the Lord that day.

I know it's time travelish, but you know what I mean.

208 From the Chinese Space Station tracker link posted earlier. The odds of it hitting Michigan look pretty low. Maybe with Russian collusion a couple parts of it could make it to Michigan.

210 So who buys that blue print dress in pic 2 based on that pic? It looks like its too big for the model, sleeves too long as well as two big around etc. Does this evoke some "oh that will make me look younger or smaller" response? I look at a lot of ads or dress pics and go "oh that looks good on them and would work for xyz but not me" but I honestly wonder who thinks that is a good look on anyone.

I know. As soon as I heard it about it, I ordered it. It looks and sounds great, and all the screen loading times are so short compared to on the PS2.

Confession: I liked the music and style so much that I bought imported soundtracks and the art book. I did not, however, make it to the Smithsonian exhibit.

I just checked Heavens Above and found that there is a visible pass for me from 5:54-5:56 am on Monday. That would be worth getting up for if the station is still up at that time.

Or, well, it would be visible for me if I wasn't predicted to get 1-3" of snow at that time.
