1 A fitting image, since the Pope seems to think he died for nothing as there is no hell and no consequence for evil.

27 El Greco is magnificent. Sure, there are many other painters who are the better technicians, with more talent and skill, but none had his ability to make one feel closer to God.

I saw an El Greco exhibition at the Indianapolis Art Museum many years ago now. I was overcome with emotions, nearly overwhelmed.

62 The Pope may have meant that there is no "hell" in the sense of pits of fire, that "hell" is the soul being kept from the beatific vision, a lack of a "due good" from God because of sin. It's a challenge to reconsile Aquinas with the more traditional "enslavement" by Satan and all the images that have grown up around that.

I don't know what Francis was purported to have said, but I can see where his commie friend could not understand a point or purposefully pick and choose ideas and words to misrepresent them.

However, I also don't trust Francis to be clear and orthodox. He wants to stir things up to screw with faithful catholics who he hates. Pushing the idea that "firey pits" (which are metaphores for the tortured soul anyway) don't exist has to be made in a clearer way to non-theologians.

91 Here's a serious question. Twice in the past month, in a couple of different venues, I have seen comments to the effect that Christians wear a "symbol of torture" around their necks, what horrible people they are. As if Christians celebrate or advocate torture. I don't recall every hearing that particular line of attack before. Have I just been blissfully ignorant? Is anti-Christian rhetoric ramping up?

96 I'm not a particular fan of El Greco but the subject is proper, of course.

Glad to be able to see the art thread. Our internet service has been out the last two days. Bummer. How am I supposed to look up all the weird stuff, mostly historical, that occurs to me in the course of a day? If I had the shelf space (and I don't) I would get a good set of encyclopedias, circa 1950s, and the latest World Alamanac.

A blessed Easter and Passover to the Horde.

97 from all I can tell, blessed are those that are part of "the first resurrection, over whom the second death has no power".

An average standard view I'd guess, is there is a resurrection of the just, then the (2nd) resurrection of the unjust. The unjust are hence judged and die a "second death". It is an "eternal fire" which means eternal separation ... but they are dead, not "tortured" for eternity.

And Christians would be in the gathering together ... a different thing ... body of Christ, joint heirs, brothers with JC who is head of the body. (not bride). Some debate maybe whether a just person can have eternal life via resurrection of the just, if they never "accepted Jesus as Lord" during this the "day of our Lord" (from Pentecost till his return) ... I vote yes, yes they can, but not "sonship spirit" part of the body.

And the Sabbath is actually Saturday, so Sunday in their culture began at sunset Saturday night, then JC died at sunset on Wednesday, rose at sunset on Saturday. But we adopted other traditions. oh well.

some use the dove as a symbol, and (I kinda agree) the emphasis is not on the suffering, but on "the glory that would follow". "We" are not supposed to go around feeling guilty for the suffering, but thankful for the redemption.

Supposedly the glory is always mentioned along with the suffering in the epistles (I guess), and often only the "more than conquerors in Christ" is mentioned without the suffering. I tend to agree that the guilt factor is used "against" Christians, but the emphasis should be on the salvation, redemption ... not the suffering.

We have to continue to "fight the good fight", not constantly "beg forgiveness" for that which is "completed". "It is finished" was the end of that, blame the first Adam for the need for the blood sacrifice. The price was not paid so that we would continue to "wallow in guilt". The resurrection is clearly the point, not the payment via the death and suffering.

Of course communion is to remember the price paid, so the cross can be a good symbol, in the right context. Each person can study and decide. (or not)

I noticed several years ago that young, non-working mothers no longer feel any responsibility to help in their kids' schools or churches. So the work is falling on older women (and men) who have already been there, done that.

We finally quit having summer Bible camp because not a SINGLE parent could be bothered to help, even bring snacks. For 60 kids. The moms would come in to pick up their kids in their yoga pants and tennis clothes. We were just a free baby sitting service.

I noticed several years ago that young,
non-working mothers no longer feel any responsibility to help in their
kids' schools or churches. So the work is falling on older women (and
men) who have already been there, done that.

We finally quit
having summer Bible camp because not a SINGLE parent could be bothered
to help, even bring snacks. For 60 kids. The moms would come in to pick
up their kids in their yoga pants and tennis clothes. We were just a
free baby sitting service.

Their little darlings behaved exactly as you'd expect.

185 Wiki on the history of Easter Eggs:

in Christianity, for the celebration of Eastertide, Christians say Easter eggs symbolize the empty tomb of Jesus, from which Jesus resurrected. In addition, one ancient tradition was the staining of Easter eggs with the colour red "in memory of the blood of Christ, shed as at that time of his crucifixion." This custom of the Easter egg can be traced to early Christians of Mesopotamia,
and from there it spread into Russia and Siberia through the Orthodox
Churches, and later into Europe through the Catholic and Protestant
Churches.

187 Christians wear a "symbol of torture" around their necks,

-
In Ron Rosenbaum's book Explaining Hitler he looks at various people's explanation for the Holocaust. Some Jewish historian whose name I've forgotten blames the Holocaust on Christianity because it is centered around the torture and murder of a Jew.

I quite liked that book. There are no safe spaces in that book. No matter who you are or what you believe (nihilists excluded), something in that book will deeply offend you. For another example, he looks at several arguments that the Jews were responsible because, well, they're Jews, damn it!

Although Rosenbaum doesn't express any strong agreement with any explanation, he does cites with approval a theory that failed artist Adolph Hitler, realizing after Stalingrad that he has also failed at becoming the greatest conqueror in history, decided to become the greatest artist of evil in history.

236 that wiki interpretation of Easter eggs is nice. The original surely has to do with rabbit fertility gods, and facing East toward a rising sun. There was a book Babylon Mystery Religion that shows the early church adopted a bunch of the pagan rituals, that made the transition for the (pagan) natives easier.

As long as people have proper context, it probably doesn't matter. Traditions are nice, but probably good to know how some got started. We discussed this briefly regarding St Patrick's Day, and how they put the sun in the middle of the cross, adopting some druid culture.

But there are times when the adopted ritual influences the doctrine, and mythology gets inserted and becomes "wrong doctrine". Of course men worshiping their various golden calves is hardly a new problem.

There is also the theological idea that through natural reason and God's finger writing on the human heart he created that man imperfectly yearned toward his creator, but without revelation had an imperfect understanding or ability to appropriately focus on the One True God. So while we find imperfect symbols and concepts in many other religions and man's past, it was a movement toward or a stage in salvation history.

Of course, Spring is tied up with "new life" which is also tied up with fertility and light and so many other things. There are only so many things in the experience of man, of objective goods, which can be used as symbols. Water, light, white garments, music, kneeling, bowing, bread, wine, all from the experience of man and his life.

For example, eggs have nothing to do with the Pascal mystery, but they are a symbol of new life.

I just did a perusal of Marc Chagall's paintings of the Crucifixion. He painted a lot of them, and all of them are interesting.

___________

Belief and Faith

Religionists hold some beliefs which are true, but invariably will hold some beliefs which are false.

Jesus' folks had the best religion in the world, a powerful monotheism which bound them together. It was perfect ground for planting his message, because mostly he had only to tease out the best of his native religion.

His people also practiced a lot of unspiritual things.

If a false belief is a foundation of a person's faith, but is relatively benign, then it behooves us not to argue that belief. Spiritual benefit may be derived even from a fiction. If you could disprove the belief, there is great danger of the baby of faith being thrown out with the bathwater of bad belief.

Therefore, as teachers of truth, we must endeavor always to put good truth in, reinforce good lessons even from a fiction, and if there is error, the light of truth will ultimately drive it out. (And anyway, there's that beam in your own eye thing.)

Respecting the value, if not the facts, of a belief for the sake of another's faith is not a hard and fast rule. There are times you just have to bust loose and plainly speak about misguided religious leaders and whited sepulchers and all that. Even if it kills you.

.Yep that's why I chuckle when I see people people wanting hillary tried and convicted and in jail. It ain't ever gonna happen.

Even if you could get a Grand Jury to hand down an indictment, which you wouldn't, you couldn't find a Prosecutor who would take the case because they know they would lose. Nor would any Jury convened anywhere in the Country find her guilty.

As far as I know, writing in complete sentences, and even more so, exercising proper grammatical skills, are not against Federal law, and the lack of prosecution of many of the outcomes of the educational system from the last 30 years lend credence to this.

357 "Of course, Spring is tied up with "new life" which
is also tied up with fertility and light and so many other things. There
are only so many things in the experience of man, of objective goods,
which can be used as symbols. Water, light, white garments, music,
kneeling, bowing, bread, wine, all from the experience of man and his
life.

For example, eggs have nothing to do with the Pascal mystery, but they are a symbol of new life. Posted by: dagny

right, but to me, that is a problem with tying Christianity too much to any such symbols. People need to study the whole Bible, and its context in the history of man, stories in the context of that culture. Doing away with "graven images" was an OT thing.

The whole "worship and serve the creation more than the creator" is a natural (man) tendency. The (legal) redemption of man from Satan (thanks first Adam) is about our "legal" spiritual standing thanks to the full payment.

All the symbols are nice and maybe useful, as long as put in proper context of only being symbols. There is no magic to rubbing the rabbit's foot, or saying certain words as if they are a magic chant. But nature is a pretty cool creation, so should be "embraced" on that basis. imo

I don't think many Christians are worshipping eggs. Iconoclastism isn't a thing. We aren't Mohammadians. "Luck," horoscopes, knocking on wood, throwing salt, umbrellas inside, worries about walking under ladders, black cats, etc are all superstitions and should be avoided----- but are probably relatively harmless because people are mostly too dumb to realize that they're performing a pagan ritual and put no meaning into it with their free will.

It has amused me that my catholic in-laws who are 2-4 generations off the boat carry around so many "high mortality rate" superstitutions especially around birth, while being Christian for probably centuries longer than my blue painted cattle stealing ancestors. If asked, they'd probably think there was some religious piece to it, but they're dumb, not heretical.

yeah, I'm not a church person. Church has some great things, fine by me.

My point I guess ... kinda "traditions make the word of God of none effect" kind of thing. If people spend their efforts on the pageantry, they feel they've done the Christian thing, when they (even the dumb ones) have actually just replaced it (with ritual). Kinda like being an American includes some education in civic duties, not just showing up for the welfare and PC dogma.

but you make fine points, I'm not disagreeing.
