The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

“A handful of teens from Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida, they have a right to their views, obviously. This is a given. But the rest of us also have rights including the right to assess what they are saying and decide whether it ought to become law to which we are subject. These are not religious figures; we are not the faithful. We’re all citizens here. Let’s take a look at what they are saying and decide if it’s a good idea or not.” Tucker Carlson

Quote II

"People have a very warped view of Christianity. They think it’s all very precise and we never do wrong and we’re praying all day and we’re right wing. It has nothing to do with that. It has to do with a one-on-one relationship with Jesus Christ." Alice Cooper

Quote III

“You’ve heard people say you have to pry my gun from my cold dead hands.” He then shrugged his shoulders, shook his head back and forth, and then continued: “Okay…” Democrat Sheriff candidate R. Daryl Fisher, West Asheville, North Carolina

Quote IV

They "trust me". Dumb fucks. Mark Zuckerberg

Quote V

"As the survivor of a mass shooting I can tell you from first-hand experience that all of you protesting and taking days off from school insult the memory of those who were killed and abuse and insult me and every other lover of liberty by your every action," Jesse Hughes

Once in a while our government is effective. ICE uses Facebook to track down illegals.

CAMBRIDGE ANALYTICA MAY have had access to the personal information of tens of millions of unwitting Americans, but a genuine debate has emerged about whether the company had the sophistication to put that data effectively to use on behalf of Donald Trump’s presidential campaign.

But one other organization that has ready access to Facebook’s trove of personal data has a much better track record of using such information effectively: Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Are you a Facebook user? More food for thought.

The Facebook data scandal deepened last night after users found the social network had harvested information including call logs and text messages.

Some users discovered the Silicon Valley giant had been storing complete logs of incoming and outgoing calls and text messages.

Others reported that data such as contacts in their address books, social events in their calendars and even friends' birthdays had been stored.

One user, Dylan McKay, reported that from October 2016 to July 2017 his logs contained 'the data of every [mobile] call I've made, including time and duration' and 'data about every text message I've received or sent'.

On a related note, Facebook founder is having problems. Hardee-har-har.

The ONT Musical Interlude

Before they became big stars, many musicians had to pay their dues and find their styles by playing with a wide variety of musicians. Here are some band pairings that might surprise you.

March 27, 2015, Country singer Willie Nelson announced that he and his family were hard at work on a new brand of marijuana called Willie's Reserve. Stores of that same name were being planned and were to include his signature brand and other strains that would be grown to meet quality standards. via thisdayinmusic.com

March 27, 1970, Born on this day, Mariah Carey, singer. Carey is named after 'They Call The Wind Mariah' from the musical 'Paint Your Wagon'. Scored the 1994 UK No.1 single 'Without You' plus over 20 other UK Top 40 hits and 12 US No.1 singles. via thisdayinmusic.com

There are large segments of the USA against the use and/or legalization of marijuana. Special snowflakes should take notice. The First Amendment protects speech that is unpopular.

After nearly four years and a trip to and from the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit, Gerlich v. Leath — FIRE’s Stand Up For Speech Litigation Project lawsuit against Iowa State University administrators — came to an end this week with an order entering judgment for the plaintiffs and awarding them nearly $600,000 in attorney’s fees and costs. Adding to amounts previously awarded or settled on in the course of litigation, Iowa State University defendants are responsible for nearly $1 million in damages and attorney’s fees for the case.

The events precipitating the suit began in 2012, when ISU approved a T-shirt design for the university’s chapter of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (ISU NORML) featuring ISU mascot Cy the Cardinal’s head in place of the “O” in NORML. After receiving blowback from the public and state officials, ISU rescinded its approval of the T-shirt and adopted new regulations that would limit ISU NORML’s use of university trademarks in the future. The group’s T-shirt designs were repeatedly rejected in 2013 and 2014, including even a design reading “NORML ISU Supports Legalizing Marijuana.”

It looks like a NATO ally of ours is having a little issue or two.

At least three Belgian generals, including the chief of the air force, and several senior officers were suspended yesterday by Belgian Chief of Defense Marc Compernol as the F-16 scandal continues to widen, to the point it is now referred to in the media as the “F-16-gate.”

The officers are suspected of having hidden from Compernol and Defense Minister Steven Vandeput studies carried out by Lockheed Martin and which concluded that the Belgian air force’s F-16s could remain in service for at least six years longer that their planned 2023 retirement date.

The ONT enjoys reading the Colonel, Colonel Kurt Schlicther. Usually he is spot on. The ONT isn't so sure he is on this. Don't blow a gasket over the f*cking irresponsible spending bill Omnibus Budget Bill.

Remember the Kobayashi Maru scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan? Sometimes, you end up with no good options. Donald Trump just had that happen to him with the omnibus abomination, though don’t be fooled by the passive voice – he deserves some blame for letting it come to this. The absolutely essential military spending was wrapped in a fat suit of glistening, rancid pork, and the congressional rats had already abandoned ship and fled out of town when it was dumped on his desk. So he had a stark choice. Trump could sign it, and enrage his base but ensure our military could prepare for the wars looming on the horizon. Or he could veto it, and launch a government shutdown with about 0% of succeeding in getting a significantly better deal.

Trump chose the least worst of two bad options, and I, for one, refuse to lose my Schiff over it.

So goes the not my hill not my fight mantra.

Photo shoot? Literally not figuratively and tonight's Genius Award Winners.

An Atlanta photographer was shot and nearly killed last month after entering the home he was assigned to shoot and surprising the homeowner inside. It turns out there was a miscommunication, and now the photographer is suing.

The Gwinnet Daily Post reports that photographer Whitney Morris was originally scheduled to photograph Belinda Brooks’ house on Thursday, February 1st. After not being able to make that appointment, the real estate agency that hired Morris rescheduled the shoot for Friday, February 2nd… apparently without informing Brooks.

The Horde can determine who was a genius negligent.

Wal-Mart is the butt of many a joke. Wal-Mart employes are Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

The mother managed to flee with her son and hide behind a counter as Walmart employees joined the fray. As Budier-Herrera fled, he "aggressively swung" his machete to intimidate the employees before attempting to snatch a baby from another mother's grocery cart. A strap buckling the baby in to seat prevented Budier-Herrera from succeeding.

The Walmart employees finally succeeded in tackling Budier-Herrera — and an off-duty police officer then detained him.

6 I did a little bit more research on the Democrat candidate for Sheriff of Buncombe County, NC, R. Daryl Fisher. As most probably know by now, he made a comment that he was willing to take guns from owners' cold dead hands and the audience laughed. He is now saying it was a "joke" and gave a bit more video.

While it is true that he follows up on the "joke" by saying that he will just take the guns when the owners die (presumably of natural causes), his contempt for owners of "icky" guns that he does not deign appropriate for his subjects is pretty apparent. It also does not mitigate the behavior of the lunatic Democrats (but I repeat myself) that laughed when they thought he was in earnest.

His Republican opponent is Shad Higgins (website: shadforsheriff dot com) who is a business owner with no previous LEO experience. I vectored the guy $20 bucks since he can't be worse than his opponent, Fisher, who seems to have masturbatory fantasies of killing Deplorables.

Actually understanding the mechanics of these things and being realistic about the risks being taken on is not "losing your Schiff".

There's zero reason to think much the same thing will not be repeated this fall, and ever after - until/unless the Senate gets 60 GOP who will support Trump's key agenda items (most unlikely), or the Senate finally buckles under the vandalism of the Dems and does away with filibuster rules for appropriations bills.

"Suitcase Killer" Rosendo Rodriguez III put to death in Huntsville:

"The autopsy findings revealed that Baldwin died from blunt force trauma and asphyxiation. The majority of the approximately fifty blunt force wounds, including abrasions, lacerations, and bruises to her torso, extremities, head and neck, occurred shortly before or at the time of Baldwin's death. She also suffered contusions, abrasions and hemorrhages to her urethra, anal, and vaginal areas, including injury to her cervix. The bruises on Baldwin's thighs were consistent with someone grabbing her legs and pushing them out. She suffered two black eyes, and there was evidence that her head was struck with or against something. There were no defensive wounds consistent with a knife fight or wounds consistent with her being placed in a choke hold. The wounds on Baldwin's neck were consistent with having been "taken from behind with [the] fingers on the left-hand side [of her neck] and the thumb on the right-hand side." Although the injuries sustained by Baldwin were sufficient to cause her death, the medical examiner could not confirm that Baldwin was dead before being placed in the suitcase. However, he testified that, due to her placement and position in the suitcase, she would have died very shortly thereafter due to "positional asphyxiation." The medical examiner distinguished the pre-death wounds from the post-death injuries that occurred when the suitcase was transported by garbage truck to the landfill."

119 Post Katrina there were a LOT of damaged and down trees in our neighborhood, including a large pine that holed my garage roof. A loon from Alabama, who called his self "Crazy Billy", came in and saved the day.

He would sleep in his truck at night and cut down, and cut up, trees all day. I had two estimates on the tree on my garage, each for over $1200.00. He cut it, removed it from the roof and hauled off the remains for $100.00. I gave him an extra C note just because. He showed me his roll of 100's one day, probably more money than he had ever had in his life

The tree could "barber-chair". Meaning, he cuts part way through the trunk, and then the trunk splits above the cut, the top falls over, and applies a wicked sideways thrust to the lower part of the trunk as it does so. Guy goes flying, so does ladder. Or top falls on power line, and zappage happens.

#4. Hit "refresh" like a Monkey On Crack from 9:45 Eastern to 10:15 Eastern.
#5. The ONT is usually below your page, so scroll below your page, so as to see the "Comments" link.
#6. Scroll low. Mis-Hum has large opens. I would go at least five wheel-turns on the mouse. Maybe three, depending on your settings.
#7. Use the "wheel-click" method to get a fast-scroll on the left side of the page. (Click the wheel)
#8. Go to the left side of the page and drop your cursor down to the bottom. It flies to the bottom.
#9. "Paste and Post" Hit "paste" and click "post".

Lund use to make a fiberglass boat similar to this and a dozen other midwest boat builders no longer in business. Good solid boat, about 15' long could handle up to a 25-30HP motor. Also one could row it. Many a WI resort in the 60s and 70s had these boats which they would include with a cabin/cottage

260 Like Schlichter, I have been describing the Budget fiasco as a Kobayashi Mary scenario for Trump. Winning was impossible - the only choice was how to lose. It's valid to say he could have made a stand to encourage his boss, but you've got to realize that in the end he still would have lost. The votes in this Congress, ESPECIALLY in this Senate just Are Not There.

Conservatives do NOT control the Senate in any way shape or form, and Mitch McConnell has more in common with Schumer than he does with any of us. That's just a sad fact of life.

I'm not happy Trump signed it, but I also recognize that it was a valid strategy to simply get the bad news out of the way and over and done with as quickly as possible. Especially with so many other fights going on. Everybody, even Presidents, have to choose their battles. This was one he had no chance of winning. And that is McConnell and Ryan's fault far more than it was Trump's.

I don't doubt that. And anything that floats and takes you places is a good thing. But there's something industrial and inorganic about it.

Lund makes really good metal boats for harsh conditions. This looks like "we learned how to work fiberglass, what should we do with it".

It's like after WWII Grumman had got really good at bending aluminum for Wildcats and Hellcats and then they made canoes out of aluminum because that's what they'd learned how to do.

Good boats sort of grow out of the area and conditions they're desinged for, like the Adirondack Guide Boat.

295 262 Remember the Kobayashi Maru scene in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan?

First of all....It was a movie....never happened..won't ever happen."

You're quite wrong - it has happened a lot. The genius of that image is that it was a clever way of portraying the kind of choice that makes some men heroes and disgraces others.

Every medal of honor awarded posthumously went to a man who faced that Kobayashi Maru scenario with honor and great courage.

The Jewish partisans in the Warsaw Ghetto faced it.

The defenders of the Alamo faced it. They all knew they were going to die, and that their stand was hopeless, and they did it anyway, knowing that.

There are times when all goes to hell, and you know you are going to die, and lose everything, and at those times, what do you do? How do you face it? That's what it means.

Now in this case, it's just a political battle, and a strategic retreat is hardly on that level. Perhaps the only point is to say, if you have any hope for the future, a strategic retreat is better than standing and dying on a hill you cannot defend.

I heard this anecdote secondhand in the 1980s... a Canadian soldier was talking about his unit being down in the States for whatever training or the like, and as they were sitting around with U.S. troops waiting to be picked up one of your guys was bragging about how great the M-16 was. (Can't recall the details about why; and it might have happened in the late '70s and not 'fresh' when I heard it in the '80s.) One of the Hosers took his then-used wooden-furnished FN-style SLR and threw it violently against a brick-wall and paraphrased said, "Mine will still work. Wanna do the same with yours?" No one took him up on the challenge.

299 My evil AR wears an Ace brand Skeleton Stock.

https://tinyurl.com/yd4pjv8j

The long version, actually.

Point is, it's strong, and would hold up well to a buttstroke strike.

That said, no AR with a buffer tube should be used as a swung club. You bend that tube, and you've now got a... club.

A redesigned M-1 carbine that'd digest 5.56 would be great, or yet still, a Ruger Mini 14, engineered so as to have actual built-in accuracy and Mil.Spec. milled & machined everything.

But sorry, Palp. I know you love your Kalishnikovs, but in terms of ergonomics, modularity, adaptability and accuracy, they just aren't up to spec.

I *do* think the SKS has it all heads and shoulders above the AK platform, except for mag-dump volume firepower.

But the SKS tends to be more accurate, stripper clips are hella fast in trained hands, and it's just an all around stronger rifle than the AK. Even when delivering buttstrokes and club-blows.

Plus, it handles damn near as nicely as the vaunted M-1 carbine.

The AK, by the way, is scaled for the typical, malnourished, under-developed third world 5'5" commiesoldier. Not that those bastards aren't world-class mean ass fighters who'll killya dead if given half a chance.

But that platform just doesn't meld with my 5'10" self, and I've seen many a grimace from the bigger gents having to contort themselves down to shoot that wee short stock with it's attendant 3/4 man-sized length of pull.

Build quality on many AKs though, is often superb. Pity it doesn't help most of them produce anything smaller than a 3 inch group at 100 yards. I've seen the rare one group two inches, consistently, but those are exceptions.

But I've never seen an AK shoot 1 MOA, or anything remotely close to it.

And 1 MOA or better, is common with many of today's AR platforms.

Rifle wise, we all go to our own church, as the old saying goes.

And the older I get, the more I'm interested in slow, accurate, effective, deadly, aimed fire.

Hmmm... how hard, d'ya think, it'd be to convert a Garand to run on 6.5x55 Swede?

307 That said, no AR with a buffer tube should be used as a swung club.

Still would give my left nut for an M1 Garand made to use BAR magazines instead of enbloc clips.

309 Trump could sign it, and enrage his base but ensure our military could prepare for the wars looming on the horizon. Or he could veto it, and launch a government shutdown with about 0% of succeeding in getting a significantly better deal.

Or he could not sign it and not veto it and it would drift into law on its own after 10 days.

I know the Constitution is really long but glancing through it every so often isn't a bad thing.

328 when i was at Benning in '83, they taught bayonet tactics, and butt stroke was part of it.

however, they also wouldn't let us practice with our issue M16A1 rifles, just the rubberized ones. make of that what you will.

i'd be leery of butt stroking with an AK variant as well, since the butt is a separately attached thng at the rear, and the same for the FAL.

SKS, M1 carbine, Garand M14/1A, Moisin, Springfield, etc, whale away.

of course, resorting to that either means you're either seriously fucked or in the final assault, and the other guy is. either way, it's a messy business and not for the infirm or faint of heart.

346 That talk about Star Trek II got me thinking about "things that only happen in movies", this time with respect to the ending, where Spock rearranges the reactor crystals by hand, but is fatally poisoned with radiation in the process.

That actually happened on the Soviet submarine K-219, and the sailor's name was Sergei Preminin. An accident on board had damaged the reactor control rods, and although the submarine had surfaced, instruments showed that a catastrophic meltdown and explosion was imminent. Two men went into the reactor compartment, the commander of that section and his subordinate, Sergei. The commander collapsed from the heat before they could finish, but Sergei reached his hands into the reactor and manually moved the control rods, averting the meltdown. He died, trapped in that compartment, but the rest of the crew survived.

He pulled a Spock.

365 thinking...

since the Dagos made these from Garand receivers, and fabbed a few parts, what's to stop a decent metalsmith (eves AOP speculatively) from doing the same here in the US?

you'd have to fab the mags too, for 30.06, but that's just a bit longer from the 7.62x51 NATO round, so it's just math, especially if you can get blue prints of the BM parts.... and you wouldn't need the internal block they would install to prevent 30.06 rounds from being put in the mag well of the receiver.

presto, there you go. i'd check with a good firearm lawyer first, but, AIUI, unless you were to make it select fire, which would be a major no-no, you are simply modifying an existing semi-auto weapon's feeding mechanism, and not building a new firearm from scratch, which would also be a major no-no.

376 6.5 Swede in a Garand? new barrel w/ appropriate chamber.

because 7.62x63 is significantly larger, you'll need a chamber block at the back of the magazine, so the rounds are in the right place to feed in. the side to side issue might be most easily dealt with by having a thicker en-block clip, rather than more blocks installed.

would you need to modify the feeding mechanism at the bottom as well?

i don't know enough to say, one way or the other. did the Dagos have to change it for the 51mm long NATO round?

379 The Garand was originally intended to consume and fire a .276 caliber round, in the .276 Pedersen chambering.

That's about a 2,400 fps loading, and my 6.5 Swede runs about 2,700 fps, with 140 grain loads, to approximate the factory 139 grain cartridges.

Build the 6.5 Garand with an adjustable gas-block, and one can "tune" the port to get the correct function from the operating rod, without bending the rod in the process.

I'll have to do some measuring of cartridge OAL factors. Also, the taper of the cases might determine whether or not I can use original en-bloc clips, or have to somehow contrive to custom order a meaningful batch of 'em contoured to fit the greater taper of the Swede round.

All in all though, this looks like not much more than a rather expensive geometry, math and machining exercise.

It's that "rather expensive" thing, that's the roadblock though. At least for now, but not forever.

Meaning, he cuts part way through the trunk, and then the trunk splits above the cut, the top falls over, and applies a wicked sideways thrust to the lower part of the trunk as it does so. Guy goes flying, so does ladder. Or top falls on power line, and zappage happens.

The film "Sometimes a Great Notion" had something similar as a plot element. I think they called it something else, but I don't remember their term.

Why the term "barber chair"? I've been in many a barber chair, but the worst that ever happened to me was a bad haircut.

A long time ago I had an assignement to do a feature story about a farmers market, circa 1750. I was stuck until I decided to do it like a contemporary diary entry. The first draft was written with a quill pen dipped in an ink well. The words just seemed to flow after that. It was a little spooky.

435 having eaten my last meal of whole corn kernels, i am now reduced to "clear liquids" until after my procedure, scheduled for noon tomorrow, LA time.

currently, the clear liquid of choice is whisky and water.

true story: first time i went in for a scope, we were at the downstairs neighbor's (when i hooked up with HRH, she lived in a condo) for dinner, etc, and they were all laughing at me and my pathetic bowl of jello.

then i had an epihiny: green apple martini's are a clear liquid, so i joined them for drinks, then, as they switched to wine for dinner, i kept on the martinis. (you don't want to consume reddish liquids prior to one of these.

woke up later than planned the next morning, but finished my prep, still buzzed. went to the horse pistol and was dropped off whilst herself went off to be mamogrammed.

they wheel me in, hit me with the usual dose of anesthesia meds. i do NOT knock out, so they add an additional 50%.

i come too in recovery, and feel fine. nurse comes by, sees i'm awake, and asks me how i feel: i tell her i'm hungry.

she asks if i want to try sitting up, so i just do, which freaks her out. the world spins around once and locks in place. i tell her i'm fine. do you think you can stand up? of course i can, so i do, which freaks her out again. everyone around me is zonked, and i just want the F out.

the let me get dressed, still amazed, and i walk out the double swinging doors like John Wayne walking into a saloon. HRH is there, having watched all the still semi stoned people come out with their "responsible person" and is dreading having to support me, which ain't happening.

instead, she asks me if i'm okay, and i say yes, she asks what i want, and i say FOOD.

so we go to the local Cajun place, chow down, and i have numeri Turbo Dogs. we then get home, and discover our neighbors had won in court that day against the upstairs assholes, so we spend the rest of the day drinking champagne and such.

442 eliminating the 2nd Amendment is simply a tripwire: the right to self defense exists a priori the Constitution or any other law, rule, ordinance, document or what have you.

the Bill of Rights simply codifies naturally existing rights possessed by all men, and exists simply to remind the government that there are certain limits on what they can and can't regulate.

since our government is based upon the just consent of the governed, failure to abide by said restrictions is grounds for revoking our consent, those advocating this sort of stupidity would do well to engage in a bit more learning and a bit less posturing.

or not.

444 Some interesting things afoot.

Sessions reportedly - finally - is embarrassed by the slow-walking of the FBI in response to Hill investigators' requests, and gave Wray the order to get with it. Subpoena from Goodlatte's committee was the spark.

And the loathsome, idiotic CA AG (who is deeply implicated, in some fashion, in the Awan scandal in the House) has threatened to arrest the Orange Co. sheriff, who gloriously (and perhaps, cleverly) announced upcoming jail releases would be posted on a public website ..... which would have the effect of letting ICE know when to collect their prizes at the jail.

I say cleverly because, while I haven't recently read the absurd CA laws "prohibiting" cooperation with ICE except in certain cases, OC may have pulled a CA on, well, CA. Just as CA will argue their laws are constitutional, and to squash them would amount to "commandeering" of state powers by the feds (a no-no), OC can look at their feet and say "we're not cooperating with ICE, we're just putting public info on a public website".

I see the OC stuff as just corpse twitches, doubt rule of law will be restored ever, and Trump administration continues to be Carter-esque in its weakness and incompetence on this key confrontation, but it's amusing anyway.

445 tree trimming: here in Lost Angels, there are lots of palm trees. lots of people allow them to accumulate LOTS of dead fronds, which provide wonderful housing for squirrels, rats (but i repeat myself) and various birds.

the thing is that, if you let more than a few years accumulate, they can kill the po' bastage sent up to finally trim them, as they can break loose en mass and either bend you over backwards, asphyxiating you, or pile drive you to the ground, killing you on impact or by asphyxia.

The one bit of wisdom though, I'll pass along.

Crippled trees and downed or snagged power lines are to be avoided.

Wait until the Power Line Crew guys prove to you, in person, by picking up and showing you the lines are dead, before you decide to engage and proceed to cut those limbs and trees.

451 another true "only red" anesthesia story:

First scope at Left LA VA, they get done dicking around and are ready to start. being an Rx tech, i insist they tell me the actual name of the drug and the dose before they inject it into me.

i go down, and they start their thing. a while later, i come to, and orient myself: they are still "in progress" as it were, and yet i am fully conscious.

they finish, and wheel me back. bear in mind that i have been fully awake for some time. they get me to "recovery" and are starting to connect me to all sorts of monitoring equipment when i tell them i need to use the latrine.

they tell me no, we'll bring you a bed pan. i'm "fuck that noise, ima go over there and sit down like an adult.

but you just came out of the procedure. i'm like "yeah, and i was awake for a good portion of it too, so get this shit off me and get out of my way."

they went for the stuporvisor, and i stood up at the end of the bed.

she was astounded, but after ascertaining i was actually in control, let me go.

i blew out all the extra air liquid they had added, then went back and said i wanted to GTFO of there. "you have to wait for the report.", so i followed the nurse who was going to check to see if it was ready. the doc was shocked to see me right behind the nurse.

we all went back, they talked to us, then let me get dressed GTFO.

best part was, to escape, you have to sign a form that says you acknowledge you've been under anesthesia, and you should not drink, drive or sign legal documents.

yes, you have to sign this form to get out.

i signed the bitch, drove home, had pizza and beer for dinner, than drank martinis and ONTed the night away.

because i could, and because my liver is *AWESOME*

There may not be any. She was a 49 year old homeless junkie. That's why it was so easy to believe the early reports that she just popped out from the median into the car's lane with no time to react.

Even if an ambulance chaser does find some family, it would like pretty creepy for them to want money for her death when they left her out on the streets.

Plus, can Uber exist long enough for litigation to get anywhere. I saw article earlier today that indicated they're burning through a $BILLION quarterly.

464 Had a friend come over for few hours today, and he cut lumber for me, and I installed it to beef up the supporting structure for the roof of the house. Several new pony wall studs, 2X6 by 34 inches, plus a number of diagonal braces running from the top of one stud to the base of the next. And 12" square OSB gusset plates where those members meet up. So the pony walls now look like bridge trusses. All the 2X6 work is done, and most of the gusset plates. I have maybe a dozen of the latter remaining, and then I am done with attic crawling for this episode.

if what i read here the other day is correct, there is lots if "fail" to go around as it would seem that the pedestrian and the city planners are also to blame.

the "walkway" they were on was "decorative" and not to be used, and the "crossing" wasn't supposed to be a crossing.

also, as a pedestrian, whether you have the ROW or not, you're an idiot if you don't look first and ensure that it's safe to cross.

another "true story": someone got run over here in The Valley a winter or two ago, in the cross walk. Why? because the s00per genius, who was wearing all black, at night, decided to apparently stop and tie his shoes in the middle of the crosswalk. that's what the cops told me, when i asked why they were blocking the intersection.

Heck, I jaywalk all the time, although not usually in downtown urban areas. But my theory of jaywalking is simple: if I force the operator of a vehicle to brake or take evasive action, then I have failed as a jaywalker. The idea is to wait for break in traffic, and then walk briskly across the road.

True, dat. But in this instance, deservedly so. The manufacturer of the car's Lidar system says the Lidar device "absolutely" should have seen her, even in the dark. That's what it's for, after all. Maybe Uber's control software has been programmed to de-weight that information in an effort make the car ignore oncoming traffic in the opposing lane? And hiring that zombie freakshow tranny ex-con as a "safety driver" just about amounts to a corporate "fuck you" to the notion of responsibility.
