Good News? Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Claims Intent to Take on Radical Islam and Push a More Moderate Line?

Could it be true?

Could something so positive and unexpected just happen?

We've all known for a while that it's Saudi funding of the xenophobic, murder-friendly brand of Wahabism around the world that's responsible for much of the jihadi terrorism we've been dealing with for going on 50 years now.

But Instapundit comments:

I can attest that when the Saudi money hit northern Nigeria, the Islam there went from a rather mellow Sufi variety to, well, Boko Haram. Even if all that happens is the Saudis stop funding and promoting radical Islam worldwide, that will be huge. Remember, after the Soviet Union folded, all sorts of "grassroots, authentic" terrorist movements dried up along with the Soviet funding. Something similar could happen here.

I don't believe it, only because as a pessimist, I tend to greet speculations of possible future good news with the thought that we're never that lucky and life rarely rewards you out of the blue; you have to fight and scrape for any good "luck" you get.

But who knows.

19 Could be. The money isn't going to be around forever because the oil is going away.

ISIS fell apart pretty quickly once Trump rolled into town too. I think his visit there put the kibosh on the Saudis refilling those Applebee's gift cards in Raqqa.

Some of those funds were coming from the Gulf States, but if I remember correctly I think that's how the Saudis were washing the money before it moved on to the head cutters. I think that got stopped as well.

Only advice I'd give to the Saudis is letting the wimmin drive the car is ok (make sure your insurance is paid up), but don't let them vote in any type of election thing.

27 Well, considering the way the Saudi's play fast and loose with their brand of Islam, it isn't too far of a stretch to see them walking it back a bit around the globe.

I look at it sort of like the illegal sale of indulgences in the Catholic Church prior to the rise of Protestantism. The Saudi's generally smoke and drink and whore along with the rest of the rich playboys, but then officially they pay for radical Islam around the globe as a sort of get-into-heaven-free deal.

After a fashion, I guess they have discovered that they aren't really all that Islamic to begin with, and maybe that's okay.

But I won't hold my breath for big changes outwardly. The don't want to invite all that bloodshed home once the true believers find out what a bunch of Islamic pansies they have become.

Listen to Trump's speech at the time and take a look how Saudi responded then and since. The keynote of his speech is that moderate Muslims had to take the lead in driving out terrorism and we would no longer do it for them. We would be there to support them but only if they took the lead. And they are.

The Crown Prince was in Cairo a couple weeks ago and he met with the head of the Coptic Christian Church in the church under a statue of Christ. That may not sound like much but it was an enormous message.

But how does one wage moderate jihad? How can you just sort of subjugate all other cultures and peoples? Kinda cut head off the unbelievers?

59 At least since the oil era began, the ruling family has always had to balance their dependence on fundamentalism and their legitimacy being tied to custodianship of the holy cities with their *actual* geopolitical interests, which have always been with the US and the west (when there was a "west" apart from the US).

That has started to change.

But there's not a big dial labeled "Global Terrorism" they can or will turn back. The salafists and brothers several other flavors have always (with cause) considered the al-Saud compromised poodles of the infidels.

Riyadh could and did buy off Palestinian and secular terrorists in the 60s/70s/80s with $$$$, but the truly radical Islamic types aren't so easily rented.

Saudi $$$ going to universities and building mosques in the west will probably not change, as those are at the least influence operations and at the most evangelism. But the level of funding could well go down - the fiscal crunch in the Kingdom is real and worsening.

85 37 It's not really out of the blue. This all started with Trump's first international trip when he went to Saudi Arabia and help host the beginning of the new Sunni confederation. He was bigly criticized for that move but he was right.

This is the fruit of Trump's first foreign policy move.

Rising literacy rates and the printing press in Europe led to a lot of people reading the Bible and turning into Protestants. Some of whom liked to burn people at the stake.

I'm definitely not defending Islam, but I do think there will be some reformation in the future along the lines of what happened in the past.

And they probably lost.

The Saudi military has been having trouble in Yemen. That's not really a surprise. From what I've read, they performed poorly during Desert Storm. Some major reforms need to take place in the Saudi military if it's ever going to become effective. And this gives the Saudi government an excuse to perform some shake-ups.

They might even come out ahead in the bargain.

The kicker, though, is that ALL of the Arab militaries suck. It's a cultural thing.

174 One thing to remember: a major reason for the Saudis to sponsor terrorists in General, and ISIS in particular, is to have a weapon to use against their enemies. Israel is falling down that list: Iran is enemy #1.

Now, it occurs to me that the Saudis have learned from the Shah, South Vietnam, and Mubarak. They wouldn't dare antagonize their extremists if they thought there was a chance the Dems would stab them in the back like Obama.

President Trump is serving for more than four years. Given the state of American politics, I wonder if the Saudis know something we do not...

Jim: IT'S ABSOLUTELY INCREDIBLE OUT HERE! THE WIND IS UP TO A SUSTAINED 10 MILES PER HOUR. THAT'S DOUBLE DIGITS, FOLKS! DO NOT TAKE THIS LIGHTLY OR YOU MIGHT DIE! DAVE, TURN THE CAMERA SO THE VIEWERS CAN SEE WHERE THE SNOW IS JUST STARTING TO COVER THE GRASS. There is no real professional Military who can take them in hand and ensure they are not making mistakes.... as a senior NCO does...

I don't know anything about Oman's military, so I can't comment on that. Jordan's military was heavily trained by the British back in the '40s, and iirc had British officers into the '50s. While it's been a long time since then, some of what the British did has somehow managed to survive in Jordan's army.

Centurylink has this wonderful policy that if they disconnect you, and you pay them in full but don't tell them you want to be reconnected, they don't reconnect you.

Because of this I went to another carrier, but it took them about a month the figure out what they were doing, so the phone was out with the "disconnected: message for more than a month.

Most companies take you off their list if they get that message when they call in.

Yep, Thomas Wictor has been following the reform in Saudi Arabia for years now. I started following him about a year ago. He had a really good, long thread informing of all the reforms this Saudi King has been doing for years. So this definitely was not something that was just "out of the blue". This has long been in planning.

I would recommend everyone give him a follow. He shares some good information and has a different perspective than the typical stuff you see most other places. And he backs it up with videos and articles in foreign papers and then connects the dots.

Tens of other royal family members have died in things like 'helicopter accidents'.

Crazy stuff is happening.

Posted by: Concerned People's Front Splitter Chapter at March 22, 2018 10:40 PM (rdl6o)

327 The rumor I heard is that the Wahhabist faction of the royal family tried to assassinate Crown Prince Mohammed, so he's basically stripping them of their power and forging new alliances for the Kingdom.

One of the juicier details of this rumor is that Mohammed was in Vegas during the Mandalay Bay shooting, and that mass shooting was done as a diversion, to tie up police and first responders, so the assassination would be more likely to succeed.

If true, that would explain some other things, too, like why the government just suddenly stopped releasing any details about the shooter and the fake news was happy to let the subject drop.

Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler, Keyboard Cossack at March 22, 2018 10:44 PM (wSC8T)

328 See, here's what I heard as far as background goes on this rumor... Salman (Mohammed's father) was not the Crown Prince; his brother Talal was. But, for some reason (I don't know all the details, here), Talal wasn't available to take over at the moment the previous King (Fahd, I think?) died, so Salman had to step up.

Talal's son, al-Walid, expected to be named the Salman's Crown Prince as a result. That would just return the line of succession to where it should be, he figured.

But, Salman surprised the royal family by declaring his own son his heir instead. So, al-Walid decided to try to force the issue and put himself back in the front of the line by having Mohammed assassinated.

Again, I don't know if any of this is true, but it would fill in a lot of blanks.

Posted by: Prothonotary Warbler, Keyboard Cossack at March 22, 2018 11:05 PM (wSC8T)

329 Al-Walid is apparently a hardline Wahhabist, so it would make sense for Mohammed to purge Wahhabism from the Royal Family afterwards. And forging new, more pro-Western alliances (like with Jordan, Egypt and even Israel) in the wake of such a purge would also make a lot of sense for someone in Mohammed's position.

Oil alone ain't going to keep them up with things sooooo...Listing of national oil company on NYSE (2 Trillion market cap), New high tech, eco-loving 10X Manhattan type Megacity, theatres reopened, women driving. Extreme moderation in lieu of the 2nd century crap from the Tallibunnies, a-Q and ISIS.

Indeed, MBS is the lead on the "Gulf Cooperation Council" seeking to irradicate Islamism and its attendant terror regimen (the figure demographics will triumph at current rates). Indeed, they have reached an accord with Israel with even Egypt now an ally of the Jewish state.

The common enemy is Barky's BFF, Iran (and collaterally Qatar) along with Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houtis in Yemen and Islamism generally in MENASEA.

Trump's end game: Peace in the ME after 3000 fucking years of hacking, slashing and stoning.

Historic shit going down in sand land.

333 Taqi'yya=Islamic art of dissimulation (lying thru your teeth)
If you're a true Muslim your Highness you must believe in Taqi'yya. Moe's (PBUH) entire career was based on Taqi'yya your Highness. If you believe in Taqi'yya your Highness you are a true Muslim.
Pedo Moe(PBUH) stopped his Taqi'yya only after death your Highness.
