Weird News Dump

coffe seriously.jpg

Good morning Horde. Well, at least it is morning. I'm looking for a coffee IV drip.

Here are just a few stories that didn't get too much attention here at the AoSHQ this past week.

Feel free to discuss these stories or anything else that tickles your fancy in this open thread. Please remember to play nice with others, no running with sharp sticks and be nice to the 'ettes. They don't have cooties.

Have a great weekend!!!

3 Morning peeps. A cold, raw day here in the Bluegrass. I see the neighbor has a pickup truck stuck in his front yard. It's pouring rain, and his windows are down.

Me, I'm going to make another cup of coffee and watch the show.

As bad as that is, I think I can top that. I lived in DC before the Nats moved there and the only mlb games within a reasonable distance were played at Camden Park. Now, Camden Park is a lovely park and at the time, it was really one of a kind. However, when I went there the Brewers were still in the the American League and were pretty awful. So my enjoyment of the ballpark usually ended during the game, when I sat there surrounded by Orioles fans watching Ripken and Co. beat my team into the ground.

You're too kind. McCabe convinced himself that he should decide who was elected POTUS, and when the "wrong" guy one, that it was up to him to undo that. Even when it meant destroying people's lives, such as Flynn's and Manafort's. Wasn't it McCabe who chose to have the FBI go into Manafort's house in the early a.m., having the agents pull him and his wife out of bed? McCabe also was caught asking agents to alter their 302 reports - the only FBI record of an interview with suspects (i.e. suspect cannot credibly challenge it since no video or audio recording exists)? These are just some things we know so far.

I can see no way McCabe could justify doing these things - this kind of cavalier exertion of state power over people - as the "right" thing.

97 Oh FFS. Now people are complaining about the police saying that the Austin bomber was a troubled young man and they are bitching because they say the Police wouldn't have said that if he were a black kid.

"Because the bomber was white, some people almost immediately questioned
whether the same level of compassion would have been afforded a person
of color."

They seriously have nothing but identity politics on the left.

Yahoo news has the story from the AP.

For 9mm I consider something around .20 - .22 cents per round a good price for jacketed ball ammo. You can always pick up a box of 50 more expensive hollow points if it's a carry gun. Some will argue to only train with your carry ammo but I'm not sure it makes much difference for most shooters if the bullet weight and velocities are approximately the same.

deblasio sucks. Here in sunny but chilly NC, one of the animal rehabilitation centers came to a pre-school to conduct its own little groundhog day with the kids. Unlike Phil who saw his shadow, this groundhog did not see its shadow. All good, early spring, yippee! Then the news anchor gives the painful reality, the groundhog was blind in one eye and nearly blind in the other eye. It could not see its own shadow, because it couldn't see anything. Welcome to the other side of the wardrobe.

152 Like Krebs, I'm off to a "funeral" today. It's not really a funeral as I have come to know them though, and I really don't know what to call it. The dearly departed is being cremated, only she's not cremated yet. So we'll sit in a funeral parlor looking at a fancy, empty box. Perhaps there will be a kneeler in front of the box so we can say a prayer...for an empty box.

I'm more comfortable with the traditional formalities:

Somebody croaks. They get laid out in a nice casket. You go to a "wake" and kneel for a prayer at the casket, then pay your respects to the family. Hang around for an hour or two chatting with friends and relations, making sure to exit just minutes before the priest arrives to say the rosary.

The next morning, you go to church for the "funeral" mass. Then you follow the hearse to the cemetery where there is a short service (religious and possibly military,) lay a flower on the coffin, and pay your respects to the family again.

Then you go to the designated pub, listen to all the great stories and fables about the dearly departed, get drunk, start singing, maybe eat something. Pay your respects again as you head out the door for home.

That's why I love Miller Park with its' retractable roof. I have too many memories of sitting at County Stadium in April with snow on the bleachers. You can deal with that during football season, but it's nice to not be freezing at a baseball game.
Plus, when you buy season tickets, you know that a game will take place on those days and not get rained out. If you drive 3 hours from up north to get to a game once or twice during the season, that's great.
I don't understand why the Scandis next door put a roof on their football stadium but not on their new baseball park.

Not that I'm a bitter Rangers fan that still sees Nelson Cruz misplay a weak pop-up in St Louis that should have won the Rangers a World Series, or anything like that...I really don't remember that too well.

That's mostly what I was wondering. The same place sometimes has Winchester or Federal white box FMJ for $11/50, but none today. Just wondering if the next-best price was worth grabbing a box (they let you, you know).

I have maybe half a box of FMJ lying around and the rest is Hornady Critical Defense FTX which I'd rather save for social occasions than burn at the range. It's not like it goes bad or anything.

If Trump has no agency he's not good for anything regardless of his intentions. And your suggestion that this is all on the uniparty assumes his lack of agency.

If he has joined the gope nobgobblers in the belief that his choices must be defined by how he can avoid the media saying mean things about him, he is similarly useless.

If he had vetoed it, he would have forced them to make a better deal (perhaps even hold out for the senate to pass an actual budget) or override his veto, which would maximize the number of congressshits that would have to face primary voters with this vote on their record. Instead he chose to sign it, and sign his allegiance to them.

There isn't anyway he can make up for this. His agenda is unfunded (and I don't give a shit about more toys for a military that is completely divorced from the interests of the American people, due to its slavish obedience to DC), which means none of it will happen. He chose surrender at a time when he held all the cards, and he made a point of rubbing all our noses in the fact that he was giving it all up (the asshole even had his PAC fundraising on the veto he was 'considering'!). For what? So his stupid military parade could be funded?

That's all on him. Fuck him.

225 I just watched a young man wheeling his daughter in a stroller past my house. She made him stop and go back to pick up a stick that was lying in the yard, and she wielded it like a magic wand.

I'm fine with that. That's one less stick I have to pick up when the weather gets warm.

There isn't anyway he can make up for this. His agenda is unfunded
(and I don't give a shit about more toys for a military that is
completely divorced from the interests of the American people, due to
its slavish obedience to DC), which means none of it will happen. He
chose surrender at a time when he held all the cards, and he made a
point of rubbing all our noses in the fact that he was giving it all up
(the asshole even had his PAC fundraising on the veto he was
'considering'!). For what? So his stupid military parade could be
funded?

That's all on him. Fuck him.

252 If the Republicans are to survive, at some point they have to confront their terror at being blamed for a government shutdown. Of course they would get blamed, there's no way the Propaganda State would allow a rational viewpoint to see the light of day.
But this was their best opportunity: 1) The media is already screaming at the top of their precious lungs every day, it can't really get much worse; 2) Leading the executive branch gives the Repubs the opportunity to minimize the impact of a shutdown on Normal People (keep the parks open, etc.); 3) With both houses of Congress, the Republicans could have forced debates and votes on rational budget bills; 4) With the presidency, it would have been possible to make their points with the American public.

273 And if the Republicans *had* stood up to the Propaganda State on the government shutdown, it would have shifted the balance of power back to their side.
The thing the Democrats fear the most is the American public realizing that a federal government "shutdown" is not really that big of a deal. [Well, that, and the American public learning to think for themselves instead of digesting the pre-made opinions of the Propaganda State.]
Maybe it wouldn't have worked, and the Republicans would have gone down in flames anyway. But ultimately, there's no Republican party if all spending is perpetually controlled by Democrats using their the Magic Ring of Government Shutdown Power.

304 Re: Trump's signing of the appropriation bill.

Levin last night had a caller who asked why in the world would he threaten to veto it on Twitter, then an hour later walk into a room and say he had signed it.

Levin said he had access to the backstory on this. ( My guess is info from one of his freedom caucus buddies) Apparently, Tues night when the bill was going to be passed by the House, and Trump's office learned what was in it, they were furious. Trump called the Freedom Caucus members and wanted to work with them to try to get the bill altered , more money for the wall, etc. Ryan learned of it and went to the WH on Wednesday to discuss it with the Pres. He told the Pres. that the Freedom Caucus had told him they would not vote for ANY new spending and would only consider spending cuts, then McConnell showed up and told Trump that nothing the Freedom Caucus wants would pass the Senate and they wouldn't vote for anything that didn't include exactly what they wanted. They then left and somehow the press learned that the pres. would vote for the bill. Levin said, in his opinion, Trump was very conflicted about signing the bill, but with Mattis hammering at him about needing money , his aides all telling him he needed to sign or be blamed for a govt. shutdown, blah blah, he signed it. He figured Trump was at Mar a Lago last night brooding over making such a mistake that is so costly politically, especially with Schumer crowing about winning, etc.

This also supports my opinion , that finally, he might realize that Ryan and McConnell will side with the Democrats every chance they get, and an opportunity to infuriate Trumps base was icing on the cake.

It's been 14 months---only 14 months!

Neal Gorsuch, numerous conservative federal judges appointed, regulations slashed, ANWAR and off shore drilling opened, war on coal ended, unemployment at 16 year low, food stamp recipients slashed, taxes lowered, withdrew from TPP, attacking election fraud, focused on opiod addiction, removed from Paris Climate Accords, renegotiating NAFTA, major business $$$ returning to U.S., sanctioned Iran, Keystone and Dakota pipelines opened...and on and on.

In 14 months. 14 months.

When you rationalize why you are doing something with "never again", maybe you shouldn't do it in the first place. The idea this is designed to separate him from his base is BS. He signed it because he thought he could get away with it. Not the first time inhis life he has done something that he knew was wrong. Mitch definitely has Trump's ear on this. He may be right. Knowing democrats...orange hair.

Impeachment is political, not legal. They can charge whatever they like.

Crazy Maxine can draw up all the articles of impeachment she wants, but it will never be brought up for a vote. Even Schumer is not that stupid.

The jig is up.

Apparently there are 7 or 8 different areas in the Omnibus that designates many millions of dollars to the OIG. Many millions more than usual (in the hundreds of millions.) There is a reason for that.

I know, I know, *two weeks*. But the OIG report is going to come out and many dems and democrat sympathizers will be exposed and more than a few will be indicted.

There is already at least one prosecutor assigned, and more than likely a grand jury has already been empaneled. See this:

"DoJ on Hse Judiciary Cmte's subpoenas: We are individually reviewing the remaining documents to ensure that they do not include grand jury information, information about ongoing law enforcement actions involving American citizens, or privileged attorney-client communications."

Now why do they have to review the documents for grand jury info or law enforcement actions if no one is headed for indictment? Huh? Huh?

My understanding is that this is an omnibus spending bill. Which means it designates money for different departments, items , etc. but doesn't mandate how the money is spent, or that it be spent. Which is why Congress started doing spending bills instead of an actual budget as is mandated in the constitution. This really got to be the order of business when Obama was in office, so he could legally put money wherever he wanted , instead of where conservatives or a few Republicans would want it to go.

So we'll see what Trump does with it. Meanwhile, he has already submitted his 2019 budget, which should be , in a constitutional world, started to be debated and let's face it, torn apart and thrown away to be started over by Congress, as Congress has done to every president in the last fifty years, including Clinton and Obama. The new budget SHOULD be passed by October in an actual Constitutional world.

But we have for the most part, lifelong government welfare dependents in Congress who have no interest in doing anything that their donors don't want done. And so this theater will be going on right before midterms.

I provide two direct counter examples to your statement and *here's the problem* you then claim my counter examples, which I explained were counter examples, don't make any sense.

We could overturn Lincoln's assertion of federal authority by fighting a civil war that successfully removes territory from the DC empire. But we haven't.

We could repeal the abominations of social security and medicare, but we haven't.

So, those two things are examples of lasting effect achieved by other administrations, and your point does not stand.

Keynsianism is old and burned. The new theory is Modern Monetary Theory.

"all money is fiat money; the government can pay for anything forever and ever, amen."

Anything that blocks this function of the the government buying anything it wants is evil and wrong.

432. More good points, Jen. Good faith for Trump would be to not send PP 500 million, but of course blood merchants Collins would howl

452 6 To me the spending wasnt the bad part. Ive given up hope on spending ever getting cut. It was the the defunding of ice, the prohibition on a concrete wall, the gun control measures. This was a deliberaye fuck you to Trump and his voters by Ryan and McConnell. Which makes it so much worse that Trump signed it.

I keep hearing about "defunding ICE". What you are saying is that ICE, an acronym for the US Immigration and Customs' Enforcement, which is a huge department within the Department of Homeland Security, now has no funding and will be completely disbanded. Ok, let's see what ICE actual responsibilities are and then tell me that a six month spending bill just removed a department with 20,000 employees, 400 offices, and a presences in 46 countries around the world.

https://www.ice.gov/

What the omnibus spending bill did was only increase funding (not defund) that ICE requested by 10% , not 100% as they had asked for. It also only increased the daily allowable numbers of individuals being held in detention centers by about a 1,000, which ICE routinely overruns. (those individuals need to be housed, fed, medical care, etc. which costs $$). Which means ICE will have to turn the excess loose once the cap has been reached daily.

Which is why we need a wall.

People need to actually research what is in the bill , which isn't that hard with the internet. I learned the above statement after a ten second search on the internet where I didn't go to a Hyperpartisan website such as Breitbart or Huffington Post, neither of whom I take at face value.

So the proper term isn't 'defunded', but 'underfunded'

I found a plastic model kit of the Lexington long after I stopped building models. I paid a guy to build it and I gave it to my dad for his 80th birthday.

I tried to tell the model builder that the airplanes in May 1942 were painted in pastel blue, rather than the Navy blue that they were painted for the rest of the war, but he didn't listen, and the planes were painted dark blue.

I guess that if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

458 Rickl, you did good even with that goof.

And VT-2's Devastators as found are making people scratch their heads because everything we thought we knew about the markings and the planes themselves, well there seems to be an error or two.

Here is T-11 as found.

That is not Insignia Blue as called for on the fuselage star. It is too bright. Now look at the ribbing in the rudder. That looks like Zinc Chromate Green doesn't it? Look at the BuNo on the tail - 0291. One of the mysteries with the TBDs is the interior color because at some point Douglas switched from painting the insides a silver lacquer to that green but no one knows when that switch happened. And here is 0291, one of the earliest built planes showing green.

Hey Cardinal Dolan - Democrats leave Catholics behind and all you can do is write an editorial. How about refusing communion to Gov. , and Sen. gillibrand? You're a friggin' cardinal in one of the largest archdioceses in the US.
