I'll put something up soon.

[OregonMuse]: Just got back from seeing the surgeon who did the shoulder replacement. You should have seen his face light up when he saw me move my arm across my chest. He said it looked WAY better than when he saw me a couple of months ago. He also said the healing is progressing very well and to keep up with the PT. As long as I'm not "plateau-ing", he's happy.

The replacement shoulder is made from a titanium alloy that spoofs the bone into thinking that it's also bone, so bone tissue will grow around it. Also grow through it, because it's full of little holes, each one about 20 microns in diameter. That's amazing.

So, good news all around. Thank you for all of your prayers and good wishes.

61 At theme from the last thread:

Michael Collins was the general of the original IRA. It wasn't a terrorist organization per se, but used assymetrical warfare. The Brits sent over an assassination team of spies -- the Cairo gang -- to take out IRA leadership, but Collins struck first having most of them killed on a Sunday morning (the first "Bloody Sunday")

The Brits responded by sending in an armored vehicle and machine gunners to shoot up a Gaelic football match. 14 dead and 60 wounded. (It's a wonder there weren't more). They also killed all the IRA prisoners in Dublin Castle "while they tried to escape."

Collins won the propaganda war.

He became an after-hours drinking buddy of Churchill's during the peace negotiations, and then got shot by his own side for "selling out" for agreeing to less than full independence.

30 feet up and down a rope is not easy or fast, assuming you can even get a rope up and over in the first place. And assuming you get it done before the "see through" part let's the border patrol see you coming.

So yes it is a vulnerability, but a small one that cannot be exploited in high volume.

@Snowden -- Businesses that make money by collecting and selling detailed records of private lives were once plainly described as "surveillance companies." Their rebranding as "social media" is the most successful deception since the Department of War became the Department of Defense.

Then this on Insty:

PRIVACY: To find suspects, police quietly turn to Google.

In at least four investigations last year -- cases of murder, sexual battery and even possible arson at the massive downtown fire in March 2017 -- Raleigh police used search warrants to demand Google accounts not of specific suspects, but from any mobile devices that veered too close to the scene of a crime, according to a WRAL News review of court records. These warrants often prevent the technology giant for months from disclosing information about the searches not just to potential suspects, but to any users swept up in the search.

I mention it because it has fantastic sound for such a small receiver, especially on FM. It won't bring in stations from very far away but what it does get sounds good.

Gun Thread!!!!!!

Posted by: USNtakim prfoundly deplorable! at March 19, 2018 01:49 PM (0OmEj)

Repost from the weekend.

Got my oldest son out last weekend with his first rifle, camping, etc.

It's a Henry mini-bolt youth, single shot, .22LR.

https://www.henryusa.com/rifles/mini-bolt-youth/

On the way out, we covered and explained the four laws of gun safety, for which he was a great student, and his attention was high. After we got out, cut firewood, and set up camp, he was chomping at the bit. We set up some cans and clay pigeons at about 15 yards, and after explaining the hold, explaining the sights, discussing trigger discipline, he took his first shot.

One clay pigeon exploded. The look on his face was priceless. A few more shots and we put it away for the night, got a nice dinner and a good night sleep. Next day was filled with dead pigeons, cans, etc., and lots of smiles.

I highly recommend the Henry mini-bolt youth. It has the 5-6 year old LOP, decent trigger, bright and color contrasting fiber optic sights, which made sight picture discussion and learning easy, and beyond being single shot, the bolt does not cock the firing pin, which helps slow down the process of loading, shoulder the rifle, sight picture, cocking etc., as a little bit of added safety measure for carrying the rifle loaded (some day).

Fun times and memories to last a lifetime.

157 Rush talking now about the Swamp Media lies about Cambridge Analytics using Facebook illegally to harvest data, helping Trump win the election.

What they did was completely legal, and when it was collected in 2015, a "feature" of Facebook.

CA is owned by the Mercers, of Breitbart and Steve Bannon fame. So as you can see, the Swamp Media has completely lied and misrepresented the material facts.

And near the end of the first hour, a sweet woman called in and pointed out that in June 2013, the NYTimes Magazine had a detailed article praising Obama and his use of Facebook data and Google data (both hardcore Democrat led). Rush's response was "God bless you".

Rush is calling a full bullshit on the entire story. Because there is NO story, only a Swamp Media smear. It was like Benne-hana knife slicing.

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at March 19, 2018 02:10 PM (IqV8l)

237 The replacement shoulder is made from a titanium alloy

Titanium is some amazing stuff. Lighter than aluminum, and yet strongest than steel.

I recently needed to buy a camping shovel -- a small folding shovel for hiking long distances with for long periods of time. Normal American "military folding shovels" made out of iron are super heavy and become a back-breaking burden pretty quickly. But the chintzier flimsier cheapo lightweight shovels break pretty quickly.

Hmmm. What to do?

I did some deep web searching and discovered that the Soviet Special Ops forces back int he '80s were issued these incredible ultra-lightweight shovels that were made out of titanium which weighed about one-THIRD what the equivalent American shovels weighed, and yet were just as sturdy. And that these shovels were the envy of the US military equippers, because we did have have the budget for such extravagantly expensive shovels. But the Soviets had built a massive titanium smelting plant and adjacent factory complex devoted exclusively to making titanium in large amounts -- mostly for spacecraft and spy-plane uses. But with so much cheap titanium at hand, they started using it to make all sorts of stuff for the military. Including shovels. And because the had so much titanium ore and such a dedicated titanium-making pipeline, it didn't cost them much per pound.

Well, guess what? After the Soviet Union fell, they still had many many THOUSANDS of these Special Ops shovels still ready to go at the factories, and now no one to send them to. And incredibly, there are STILL thousands of them ready to go.

And the best part is, if you seek out the secret web sites, you can find people in Russia who have "connections" at these titanium warehouses who will sell them to you for really cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if these shovels were obtained semi-legally on the grey market (bribery, embezzlement, crates disappearing from the warehouse at night, etc.), but that's Russia for ya.

Anyway, I recently got my titanium Soviet military shovel in the mail (I actually bought two items -- a folding Special Ops shovel and a larger titanium shovel blade, with no handle), and I must admit they are FABULOUS. So light! So strong! Never corrodes!

I think that Jack said that Tiger was the best and Tiger says that Jack is the best.

But if you look at the numbers for Tiger's most dominant decade there's no one in golf who approaches it. It isn't even close. And Tiger did complete a Grand Slam - don't let the bullshit get in the way, holding all four major trophies at once is a Grand Slam.

Now, Jack was great over a longer period of time and even beyond Jack's 18 major wins, the more impressive fact is that he came in second 19 times.

So, I say that Tiger, at his best, was the best ever while Jack was the best over a career.

I think 50k people screaming is probably going to be easier to tune out than a single person who breaks the silence and yells in the middle of your backswing.

A bunch of people yelling is white noise that is relatively uniform. A single shout or change in sound is what would distract you. The fans can get closer to the players in golf, too.

But with so much cheap titanium at hand, they started using it to make all sorts of stuff for the military. Including shovels. And because the had so much titanium ore and such a dedicated titanium-making pipeline, it didn't cost them much per pound.

I read that during the Cold War the CIA had approached an American who'd been invited to visit a Soviet metal smelting facility that was used to produce special alloys for military and space use. They had the guy wear gum soled shoes, and after he walked around in the facility they analyzed bits of metal stuck in his shoes to determine their composition.

Cool, huh? Of course, back then they weren't focused on removing a duly elected President.

Sneaky! Sneaky as hell.

When researching all this, I learned that the Soviets were actually way ahead of the west when it came to titanium alloy testing, and that they had developed various titanium alloys that were much much stronger than 100% titanium and also stronger than any of the alloys we were using. They had a whole Russian-only rating system for titanium alloy strengths. (My shovels are from the second-strongest alloy, used for aircraft wings.)

After the Soviet Union fell apart, their titanium alloy formulas became known to the rest of the world, and now everyone knows how to make them. But they're still more expensive here than there, for some reason.

350 86 prototype with the bars at the bottom is a bad idea? What's to stop a border-crosser from launching a rope with a weight over the top and then fishing it back though those bars and then tying it down to those same bars?

30 feet up and down a rope is not easy or fast, assuming you can even get a rope up and over in the first place. And assuming you get it done before the "see through" part let's the border patrol see you coming.

So yes it is a vulnerability, but a small one that cannot be exploited in high volume.

Counter-mobility obstacles don't stop. They discourage (i.e. find another route) or slow people down. The biggest thing is a wall will drastically cut down on kidfiltration. That dominoes into deterring entire families.

Young men are another story. Probably the fastest way to get a goodly volume across would be (absent blowing a truck-sized hole) a combination of cherry picker and rapelling.

People who jaywalk, and I will include cyclists, are putting themselves at risk even with none but experienced car drivers at the wheel.
Presumably the self-driving car has visual/radar sensors, but if a pedestrian/cyclist suddenly pops out from behind a vehicle which hid it from sight, the car's brakes may not be effective enough to stop it in time.

You're driving down the road at 25 mph in a residential district, lots of homes with young families. 500 feet ahead you notice a youngster fly out of the front porch and head toward the road. The driveway is only 50 feet long. You can no longer see the youngster as cars parked on the side of the road obstruct your view. You'll be in front of the projected path of that child in three seconds.

My human brain can comprehend the potential. I'm still waiting for some assurances that the automakers have the tech to factor that scenario in.

Target-practice with titanium throwing shovels is an actual sport in Russia nowadays. And there is a martial art system based on Special Ops titanium shovels.

423 I'm hoping that at least some horde folks know something about marketing and advertising. I would love to tap into your collective wisdom and learning for my books.

I am a capable enough author but selling is not my forte. Writing is like being a top-notch 4-tool baseball player and having to do press junkets and meet the fans. The two skillsets do not mesh, you could be a complete curmudgeon or shy, but its part of the job to go out and shake hands, sign balls, and do those retarded interviews after the game.

So can anyone help me sell my books? I know they are good enough to sell and people review them very well, but I'm at the limits of who is aware they exist. Having books on an internet shelf of 8 billion other books is like trying to draw attention to a drop of water in the Pacific Ocean. And most advertising efforts just don't work for books.

I mean... when was the last time you bought a book because of an ad? Ever?

427 One clay pigeon exploded.

Jordan's father was sleeping in a hihgway rest area and some punk kids killed him and stole his car.

I know, that's what they want you to think.

That case explainhed for me what "the law is an ass" really means.

437 If it's done even minimally well, a system of border barriers and sensors/monitoring (for remote/impassable sections) will have a tremendous impact on illegal entry, not to mention key criminal activities.

I remain puzzled by the prevalent view that such a system is easily defeated (it isn't) and that it somehow won't have a dramatic impact (it will).

Apart from the physical/technical aspect - which is key of course - the psychological impact will be significant. As in any other conflict or competition, perceptions of will are central. Just Trump's rhetoric and election had a dramatic impact on casual (not high-value, high $, or drug-related) crossing attempts.

Unfortunately that "Trump effect" has largely faded (something that gets little notice). Which only underlies the importance of the battle of wills. The lack of action on the ground (border barriers, AND internal enforcement apart from high-value criminal organizations), in the course of a year, dissipated the deterrent effect.

Yep. Or the even more difficult situation to assess, the one I cautioned my sons against when they were learning how to drive, namely, you see a ball bouncing between cars toward the street, and instantly recognize that where a ball is bouncing, there's likely to be a child in hot pursuit. (I've had this happen twice, and both times was VERY glad I'd basically stopped cold.)

484 Everyone's going to act SHOCKED when it comes out that Google has been switching on peoples cameras and recording audio and video on millions of people, even though it should have been obvious they do that, given the creeps we all know them to be.

I have had a piece of duct tape over the camera on my computers since they were new. I'm not too concerned that they might hear something I say. I don't talk much when site surfing anyway. My other computers are just used for business and bill pay.

485 I remain puzzled by the prevalent view that such a system is easily defeated (it isn't) and that it somehow won't have a dramatic impact (it will).

This.

There's still another consideration: Illegal aliens cross the border with the expectation that they can do so again later, if necessary (for example after visiting Mexico).

Crossing once in a Herculean effort will pretty much imply you can never go back home - for weddings, births, funerals, etc. - without having to undergo a second Herculean effort.

That's got to be off-putting as well.

I use a USB webcam for Skype. (Looking at the unplugged USB fitting on the floor.)

I was wondering about how they ID a school bus, EMS vehicle, power company truck, etc. And broken down vs just stopped and waiting.

Go around, or sit and wait?

492 190. If any of those are internet connected, OregonMuse, I'd make sure they were well-shielded. And I hear gold teeth are perfect for receiving secret messages from the HiveMind. -- BJ54

494 Great news, man. Glad that you are healing. You're a moron though, so I would DEMAND 40 micron holes, with bacon!
