I've seen a number of George Caleb Bingham's paintngs, such as the Daniel Boone one. The outstanding point for me is his use of color to portray light in the sky, on the objects in the paintings and, where appropriate, the white clothing of some of the figures. That last doesn't apply in this picture.
Another aspect of many of Bingham's paintings is that they are pleasant scenes. The raftmen have to work hard but they also enjoy life: playing cards, dancing a jig, relaxing on a gentle current, as above. The crowd scenes in a town are busy but not disruptive and there is an individuality in each of the figures. I can see why the artist's popularity grew in the 20th century when a sense of nostalgia added to the attractiveness of the scenes. Posted by: JTB at March 12, 2018 09:40 AM (V+03K) 63

Wiki art on this painting:
One of Bingham's most famous paintings, this work is owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Painted around 1845 in the style called luminism by some historians of American art, it was originally entitled, French-Trader, Half-breed Son. The American Art Union thought the title potentially controversial and renamed it when it was first exhibited. It reflected the reality of fur traders' common marriages with Native American women; in Canada the Metis ethnic group formed as a result. The painting is haunting for its evocation of an era in American history note, in particular, the liberty cap worn by the older man. The animal in the boat is widely accepted as a bear cub and not a cat.[1] Posted by: Vic We Have No Party at March 12, 2018 09:40 AM (mpXpK) 66
Wikipedia says it's a bear cub, not a cat. I'm not sure if I'm believing bear cub, but clicking through to the full resolution image makes it clear it's definitely not a cat. At full size, it looks more canine than feline. I could believe a grey fox.

Agree that a more barge like flat bottom boat would be appropriate in that environment, but there sure doesn't seem to be any visual clue here that this is a wide boat. For example the "table" perspective indicates it goes across the beam, where the figure resting on it covers most of the table. Posted by: Comrade Hrothgar at March 12, 2018 09:51 AM (gwPgz) 128

Illuminating, sensible and actually practical. No politics, thank goodness. The time change was not my friend yesterday. On Sundays I roll out of bed at 5:00 to take care of the creatures, get coffee for Her Majesty, get dressed and drive an hour to get to church at 7:00 for the Rosary before Mass. Usually I'm awake before 5:00 but yesterday my body thought it was 4:00 and got caught in the worst part of the sleep cycle to wake up from. Michael Gerson is a Bush family courtier, so of course he hate Trump and hates every conservative who supports him even more. The Bushes were supposed to own those votes! Another bit of evidence, as if we needed any, as to why actual conservative ideas always got squashed when the Bushes were in power. (Gerson gives away his claim to have always been an "evangelical" when he verbally shits on Billy Graham halfway through that article. that's a "tell".) I used to read the Atlantic online occasionally, because even though they were lib they allowed a comment section which at times was interesting. Now, recently, they have banned ALL comments of ANY kind on ANY article forever. They couldn't stand the fact that occasionally someone would take issue with some of their liberal stands. So, I don't think I will ever be looking at the Atlantic much, ever again. Posted by: Tom Servo at March 12, 2018 10:46 AM (V2Yro) 310

"That's more likely than Lizzy Warren and her Indian blood...
Aren't we all descended from Charlemagne or Genghis Khan or Attila anyway?" The markers for Genghis can be found in about a quarter of the males who live in areas once conquered by the mongols, which was a huge chunk of the old world of course. But the real claim comes from an interesting scientific anomaly - in any mostly homogeneous population, after roughly 1,000 years all the descendants of the original population will show equal genetic inheritance from ALL members of the original population, due to the mixing that occurs over so many generations. Or in other words, anyone living in Western Europe today, who's descended from people who lived in Western Europe, almost certainly has some genetic markers from Charlemagne's family. (or more properly put, the Carolingians) Posted by: Tom Servo at March 12, 2018 10:53 AM (V2Yro) 333
You can see by the error pic on last night's ONT that the comments are in a db table indexed by post. I'm guessing pixy or whoever added a check for ace that happens when he confirms the draft as an actual post - ie. does a query to check if there are any rows in the comment table such that there is no corresponding row in the post table and then prints out all the guilty hashes, auto-bans them, deletes the comments and recreates the sidebar list o' shame.

Posted by: Village Idiot's Apprentice at March 12, 2018 10:39 AM (i/+aM) ======== A lot of evangelicals are (were?) purists: ie. if they had any peccadilloes or difference in opinion, the evangelical would think along the lines of "If I vote for this person, I would be endorsing them, and I can't do that so I just won't vote". I saw this come into play with Romney. Ex., "Romney's a Mormon" or "Romney doesn't support a total ban on abortion, only certain limitations", so they just sat it out. So liberals had this easy "kill button" at hand - just publish some past sin of the conservative candidate and a chunk of the conservative voters will just sit it out, giving liberals the victory since they don't care about how depraved their guy is.
