Media Weekend Freakout: Trump Just Announced His Plans to Become a Dictator
Years ago, the media lost readership to clickbait factories. At first, they said they'd beat back the challenge by providing that which the clickbait factories could not: Serious, well-researched journalism.
But the media is lazy and incompetent and cannot produce serious, well-researched journalism. The best the media can do is simply play stenographer/publicist to an ax-grinding leaker who wants his unverified claims in print. So, to beat the clickbait factories, the supposed Priesthood of All Truth instead just became clickbait factories themselves, albeit with laughable pretensions. For some reason Trump went to the Gridiron Dinner. In his usual jokey-joke style, he mentioned China's president doing away with term limits and joked that maybe we'll try that here in the US. The media's Situational Autism Simulation Syndrome -- SASS -- of course went into overdrive, as they once again decided this was the moment to pretend that they don't understand the concepts of irony or joking, and that every statement, no matter how clearly marked by context clues, is a serious and indeed gravely seriously statement, so long as pretending it to be such hurts Trump.I woke up and turned on CNN only to hear one of their commentators saying, "We now have a sitting president openly musing about becoming a dictator." And there wasn't a hint of irony in her voice. The Washington Monthly led off with, "When someone tells you who they are, believe them." Mediaite phrased it as the President having, "seemingly voiced interest in making the commander-in-chief role a lifetime position." Even James Joyner, a writer who I have respected greatly since I first began blogging, was moved to say, "He didn't seem to be joking." Actually, even Buzzfeed is throwing warning flags on this constant hair-on-fire schtick. A recent article talks to the guy who made up the alleged Russian-bot-detecting-algorithm, and even that guy says that maybe we can stop freaking out and blaming everything on supposed Russian bots.

Let's say, despite that, you still really want to put your faith in those conclusions about Russian influence. Why would you do that? Twitter is actually clogged with bots -- and has been for years -- so taking a major vulnerability of the platform and using it to tidily explain something murky and complicated is appealing. Add to that the fact that Russia really did run an operation to meddle in the US election, hacking the DNC, running real propaganda campaigns, and deploying trolls to mess with the discourse. The discourse at times seems like an attempt to keep the attention on Russia, more than anything else. Everyone seems to want to believe that Russian trolls are ruling the internet.It's gotten so bad that even Bill Maher is castigating the press for its nonstop production of #FakeNews:

Can we stop pretending that all societies and countries on the fact of the earth are good candidates for democracy and the level of human rights that the U.S. seems to demand?
Some places, due to their history and political makeup right now are more totalitarian in nature. That's what the people understand and what makes the trains run on time.
Other places are certified shitholes and have been forced in to incredibly stupid farces of democracy to the detriment of the people. Just to make some elites feel good about themselves, hundreds of thousands have died of starvation and disease because the simple form of leadership that could work wasn't allowed.
The U.S. barely is at a stage that can support a representative republic and democratic elections. If confidence in our institutions dissolves much farther, people will not believe their choices at the ballot box are being respected, then the shit will hit the fan.
Trump is right to accept the governments others have just the way they are now. It's time to get our own house in order and stop trying to change the rest of the world.

I don't much want a president who is more interested in the 'human rights' of foreigners than they themselves are. As that sort of thinking gets us Iraq.
A president who spends his time on our God-given rights, however, would be a welcome change, as protecting them is the sole reason to tolerate our government.

What they are saying is it is ok to speak out against the evils of Xi, while doing lots of cool business deals in China. Ones that make the CCP rich.

The audio is only a bit over a minute long, with the first half taken up with some CNN dicksuck telling us what to hear. The last half is Trump, but it isn't even 30 seconds straight of Trump. For the last three months, a magazine editor has been unbelievably irresponsible and rude to me. She assigned me to write a story for the magazine, I did so and turned it in on time, she thanked me and said it "looked great" -- and then silence.
Every couple weeks I'd email her and say, very causally and politely, "So, what's the status on that article?" and every time she'd write back, "I was JUST about to finish editing it and putting it online! I'll finish it today for sure!" And then -- nothing. More silence. Two weeks later, I'd inquire again, and she'd reply, "What a coincidence! I was JUST NOW finishing up with your story, and it should be online by the end of today! Great job!" And then -- more nothing. Not published. Silence.
So, FINALLY, today, after three months, she published the story. And sent me an email. And what was her excuse?
SHE BLAMED IT ON TRUMP!
Her is her email, verbatim:
"Sorry this took so long. There's so much breaking news with the Trump administration--SNAP Benefits, DACA, Russia -- that I have to spend all my working hours dealing with breaking news."
Now, it should be noted that this magazine has NOTHING to do with politics. Zero. Zilch. It's an industry hobbyist magazine about a specific hobby that is completely unrelated to anything political. (I can't name the exact magazine, obviously, but it's something along the lines of tropical fish aquariums or Contract Bridge tournaments.) I scanned the magazine's Web site and found NO political articles mentioning Trump or any of the issues she cited.
So, it has come to this: Trump is now simply the convenient boogieman on whom liberals can blame for all their failings. "I fucked up, but it's not my fault -- TRUMP MADE ME DO IT!"

I know I've told the story before about how my old bosses, the psychopaths, got all up in arms about people going to the doctor so they decreed that no more working late or through lunch to make up the time and that if you had a doctor's appointment, you had to take a half day vacation day for it.
I went to the office manager and asked her if anyone had thought this through and got an indignant of course we have.
Cut to a month later and oh my stars and garters people were, you know, leaving at noon and not coming back for the rest of the day, what with having to use a half day vacation day.
Yes, those rocket surgeons thought people would schedule say a 2:00 p.m. appointment and that they would stay at work until 1:30 p.m. and then come back at say 3:30 or 4:00 p.m. even though they had to blow a vacation day. They just couldn't believe that people who would be charged with half a day off would take the whole half day off.
I worked for psychopaths who were also idiots.

Captain, I loved the movie -very gritty, hilariously funny and not PC. Just the opposite - it is a story of faith and revenge and uncertainty. Been watching other McDonagh films since then and can recommend 'In Bruges', 'The Guard', 'War on Everyone'. Both brothers write and direct funny black comedies with a Catholic message in the script. (Note - War on Everyone is excepted).

The FF created Senators as elected representatives of each State's legislature, not popularly elected. There was no reason to term limit the wishes of a State Legislature. It would have been over reach by the Feds to do so.
