My kid's Middle School was trying to develop a policy with respect to student protests, and specifically the upcoming walkout. At the PTA meeting, we suggested counting them as truant, but were vastly outnumbered (we live in one of those "keep XXX weird" communities where everyone has a Mental Illness Haircut). The school decided to allow it, so we'll either explain to our boy why he should not participate, or give him a sign that says "I support the Constitution" or "Arm our Teachers"

As I said earlier, it's caused by someone that doesn't know what they are doing. Besides not knowing how to clear a jam, he never practiced with different brands of ammo to find what reliably fed without jamming.
Buying a rifle and the first box of ammo you touch and then going hot is a recipe for failure.

Someone could probably write a book about this. Don't know about you, but investing in a company with this type of extreme short term thinking doesn't seem like a good long term investment.
I think it could be related to how things changed in the business world some time ago when they started allowing the Top Men to get stock as part of their compensation package. What that did was quickly change the view to short term thinking as your only mission became getting the stock price up immediately. No one cared about the long term view.

I could dig up a story for you about an instructor at a major school who pulled a "surprise test" on some members of the football team (might have been Georgia) and who was then ordered to erase all records of it and anything like it, or else the administration was going to come up with charges of racial discrimination that not only would end his job there, would block him from ever working for another school again.
So that's the kind of pressure that's on most instructors to make sure players (and anyone else favored by the administration) get's that diploma.
And I think the most common way to get them through a test and a final is to ALWAYS have take home tests and take home finals, and then to mandate that all returned tests by printed out from a computer. And it's RAYCISS to ask any questions about who actually typed those answers.
Most people think that schools are kind of corrupt, just like they think that Democrats are kinda corrupt. They have got no idea how deep the rot goes, and how bad it is.

Our local high school is having a walkout, but the administrators are going to be there to make sure they return after the rally. Police officers will also be on hand.
We know the kids are concerned about safety and they're freaked out by recent shootings, including the one at CMU this morning. But to a certain extent, this is just a fad like the uprising against the dress code or the ice-bucket challenge that ultimately they forgot about.
The local police have really been around the school lately. We had ALICE training this week and I was "shot" by a plain clothes police officer. It was less than a minute from the first shot in the hallway to him coming into a classroom and shooting several of us teachers meeting.
I'm glad that our administrators are taking security more seriously than previous ones.
