Why Did It Take Two Weeks for the Media to Report on the Parkland Students' Astroturfing?

I wrote a bit about David Hines' thoughts on this Wednesday -- he had written a bit on Twitter.

The Federalist knew a story when they saw one, so they commissioned him to write a real piece.

"Can you believe these kids?" It’s been a recurring theme of the coverage of the Parkland school shooting: the remarkable effectiveness of the high school students who created a gun control organization in the wake of the massacre. In seemingly no time, the magical kids had organized events ranging from a national march to a mass school walkout, and they'd brought in a million dollars in donations from Oprah Winfrey and George Clooney.

The Miami Herald credited their success to the school's stellar debate program. The Wall Street Journal said it was because they were born online, and organizing was instinctive.

On February 28, BuzzFeed came out with the actual story: Rep. Debbie Wassermann Schultz aiding in the lobbying in Tallahassee, a teacher’s union organizing the buses that got the kids there, Michael Bloomberg's groups and the Women’s March working on the upcoming March For Our Lives, MoveOn.org doing social media promotion and (potentially) march logistics, and training for student activists provided by federally funded Planned Parenthood.

The president of the American Federation of Teachers told BuzzFeed they're also behind the national school walkout, which journalists had previously assured the public was the sole work of a teenager. (I'd thought teachers were supposed to get kids into school, but maybe that’s just me.)

In other words, the response was professionalized.

That's not surprising, because this is what organization that gets results actually looks like. It's not a bunch of magical kids in somebody's living room. Nor is it surprising that the professionalization happened right off the bat. Broward County's teacher’s union is militant, and Rep. Ted Lieu stated on Twitter that his family knows Parkland student activist David Hogg's family, so there were plenty of opportunities for grown-ups with resources and skills to connect the kids.

That's before you get to whether any of them had been involved in the Women’s March. According to BuzzFeed, Wassermann Schultz was running on day two.

What’s striking about all this isn't the organization. If you start reading books about organizing, it's clear how it all works. But no journalist covering the story wrote about this stuff for two weeks. Instead, every story was about the Parkland kids being magically effective.

On Twitter, I lost track of the number of bluechecks rhapsodizing over how effective the kids' organizational instincts were. But organizing isn’t instinctive. It's skilled work; you have to learn how to do it, and it takes really a lot of people. You don't just get a few magical kids who’re amazing and naturally good at it.

The rest of the piece details the hard work and many man-hours required to organize this sort of "spontaneous, organic" uprising by Magical Kids. A lot of phone calls, a lot of combing through online petitions to find contact information for people who can be asked to show up at a rally, etc.

The media, of course, knew all this. They knew that when they called up these Magical Kids for TV shots, they were actually talking with the Magical Kids' not-so-magical Hollywood publicity agents. And they surely knew their Democrat pals like Debbie Wasserman Schultz were helping the Magical Kids cast some spells.

But they hid this, because they wanted the Magical Kids storyline.

That's only part of Hines' point, though -- he also wants the right to know that this is how organizing is done, and if this appears to be "magical" to people on the right, it's because we're not doing it ourselves to see the "magic" is in fact just professional organization.

We need to get better at this.

12 I teach a lot of kids in Sunday School. I have taught preschool, elementary, middle and high school and university level. There is no way kids below the age of 18 are organized enough to pull off something of this great a logistical endeavor without professional help. It really irks me that Oprah and her ilk are so sycophantic towards them, without being realistic.

But I guess that's why they are actors. That's how they view life.

Exactly so. They're counting on the average LIV/short attention span voter to have absorbed this part of it, and pay little or no attention to the AstroTurf angle. Had the AstroTurf facts come out earlier, there would have been less credibility given to the WonderKids from the start, and it would have distracted from the narrative.

We ceded the "language war" decades ago.

...And it's interesting, because the academic left has been on to something for a long time that studies are now starting to semi confirm... a lot of thought is a slave to the language.

As in your brain operates differently depending on which language(s) you speak. The way you form sentences affects the way you think.

Anyways, it's an interesting hypothesis, but it is undoubtedly true that saying things like "mainstream media" only reinforces to LIVs that that's the media to listen to.

"Oh, the mainstream? I like mainstream! I don't want to listen to the alternative media!"

...And the left wins every battle like this.

For example, when we're talking about Obamacare these days, what does EVERYONE (left, right, media, etc) say?

"healthcare."

As in, "Republicans want to repeal healthcare."

Now... that's not what we're talking about, but to a LIV -- I mean, who the hell is in favor of abolishing HEALTHCARE?

Posted by: It's me donna at March 02, 2018 01:34 PM (O2RFr)

Well, what is it that everyone thinks Bloombergs (and others) millions of dollars are for?

Occasional ad buys, sure.

But mostly for on the ground "organizing."

They almost definitely have pre-written, focus group and polled scripts ready to go for any killing involving a gun. They have "allies" on the ground (unions and professional left wing agitators) ready to show up at protests, they have their talking heads lined up.... and as soon as a shooting or whatever happens, I guarantee they have people on the ground coordinating with the media to find people to put in front of CNN's cameras to advance the anti-gun agenda.

It's kind of brilliant, really.

BUt again -- this all only works if the media is on your side. If CNN intros the clip with "the NRA set up this interview with us and booked the son of an NRA lifetime member who wanted to talk to us about this shooting. Mr. Stupid Child Whose Father Probably Hates Minorities, how do you feel about the NRA killing your classmates?" it doesn't work.

I don't. I think we just have to be more willing to call it the bullshit it is.

Progressives arrange these Elaborate Fan Dances for one primary reason. Because Republicans are rarely willing to call their Base Premises bullshit.

In this case, two premises. Making a Law Prohibiting an Action does very damn little to prevent the Action. And nobody sane gives a damn what a Teenage Thinks about ... well, anything. I should now. I'm still raising two.

A guy here keeps saying Beating Progressives is Easy ... but you must have the will to completely Humiliate them. Progressives know most ain't willing, so they use that Potential Humiliation as a shield. A perfect defense of their Bullshit Base Premises.

If Republicans would just crush those Base Premises ... think of how little effort and will that would take, opposed to the flood of time and money it takes to shuffle Future Broward County Dickhead Progressives around to sing songs and hold signs they didn't even make.

133 There is no such thing as "moral authority". It's an absurd adolescent concept, and can be vaporized easily by anyone with verbal intelligence. In the case under discussion, it's laughably, obviously a non-starter.

But that just touches on one of my fine, aging whines.

So long as there is nothing resembling a press - and there isn't, and there won't be, any time soon - the most important thing to be done is for those opposed to the racist authoritarians to question every premise, reject every falsehood, educate, and force the "press" to have only those things to report.

When Newt did this - a tiny bit - during the 2012 primary, people swooned. Because it's effective. If all a "reporter" has is your deconstruction of his question, your scathing rejection of his illogical analysis, your annihilation of the other side's stupid slogans - THAT will be part of the news.

Dare you to find this anywhere. Very few, apparently, with the energy, verbal intelligence, and knowledge to actually do this.

155 So "school resource officer" is part of a program created by barry. 1,000 of them, and special counselors. at the time, it appeared to be an attempt to mimic what clinton did with "community policing" and his 100k new officers, which was mostly an attempt to get the unions and democrats some leverage in local PD.

with barry, it appears his goal was to convert the schools into sjw battlegrounds. a lot of administrators, and sro's, looking for "bullied" kids (ie, gender confused, or confusable kids) who could be used to advance the Left's agenda.

So again, we have a crisis and barry taking advantage by making it worse, pretending to help.

I thought the euphemism of SRO had to have some sinister meaning, and I think the schools were seen as a resource for the Left, and the SRO was the "political officer" from the DOJ just like the political officer from the kgb with different chain of command overseeing the local schools, and pd.

174 I despise "organizing," though. It's hard to believe my fellow creatures could be manipulated by such obvious narrative schmoozes. I have to think they are just going along because they think someone else will be fooled into believing it's what cool kids think and will join in the cool kid party, or just indulge their own inarticulate "go team" feelings.

I hate organizing and playacting. I will concede some participants are very sincere, but there are very sincere in believing an honest way doesn't get results.

So all I can do is just shake my head at the laziness of my fellow man in questioning the motive and methods of the not-lazy.

I think the whole act was a nice indulgence, and perhaps it may, just may, frighten some legislative action, but I am not exactly expecting much. I don't expect anything at this date because people will be moving on (other than the true zealots on either side).

Does the Left ever wonder about using children as a front for their agenda? There is a history to that, and off the top of my head, it seems it is always the baddies doing that - hitler youth, the commies, mao and his brigades of kids attacking adults. It is always the stupid, evil, and violent guys who have to indoctrinate and channel their programs through the kids.

You never see the good guys subjecting their children to this shit. It is always the Left, and always evil.

Of course, there are those who whinge that Trump capitalizing on that term has parallels with "Lugenpresse", conveniently ignoring that their boy Barry and the press and organs of government were going after independent, small, and foreign news sources first. The long campaign to de-platform Fox, the efforts to slur as propaganda anyone linking Russian or Israeli, etc. sources...

225 Does the Left ever wonder about using children as a front for their agenda? There is a history to that, and off the top of my head, it seems it is always the baddies doing that - hitler youth, the commies, mao and his brigades of kids attacking adults. It is always the stupid, evil, and violent guys who have to indoctrinate and channel their programs through the kids.

You never see the good guys subjecting their children to this shit. It is always the Left, and always evil.

The TEA Party attracted grifters so quickly it made my head spin.

I stopped by one rally briefly out of curiosity.

Made the mistake of giving my email address to someone with a clip board.

Somehow, that was cross indexed with a small donation I'd made to a politician in the past and the tea party types had my cell number (or something, who knows how they actually got it?) and within a day of going that rally I was getting BLOWN UP by what seemed to be at least a half dozen groups begging for money.

Groups that came and went, seemed to have made no impact, and I'm very curious where the money they raised ended up.

It left a really bad taste in my mouth. I didn't donate to any of those groups and have not donated any money to anything even close to political since then (2010.)

I think the NRA is a very good test case. Whatever your personal opinion it's hard not to see that they have fantastic organizing and messaging and they do not back down. In fact, I've been seeing reports that their membership has increased since Broward.

The big difference between the left and the right is that by nature the left is collectivist and the right is independent. It's a lot harder to organize independent people.

We actually do just show up because it is posted somewhere. We pay our own way. We join with like-minded individuals and split the costs of buses or we drive (even from several states away or, sometimes, from across the whole damn country). If we want signs, we buy materials and draw them ourselves. WE pay for our own political activity.

297 How Progressives Win the Culture War
David Brooks MARCH 1, 2018

Two things have fundamentally changed the landscape. First, over the past two years conservatives have self-marginalized. In supporting Donald Trump they have tied themselves to a man whose racial prejudices, sexual behavior and personal morality put him beyond the pale of decent society.

While becoming the movement of Dinesh D'Souza, Sean Hannity and Franklin Graham, they have essentially expelled the leaders and thinkers who have purchase in mainstream culture. Conservatism is now less a political or philosophic movement and more a separatist subculture that participates in its own ostracism.

Second, progressives are getting better and more aggressive at silencing dissenting behavior. All sorts of formerly legitimate opinions have now been deemed beyond the pale on elite campuses. Speakers have been disinvited and careers destroyed. The boundaries are being redrawn across society.

Posted by: Semi-Literate Thug at March 02, 2018 02:09 PM (jKWxY)

The scariest thing to me about the Trump Presidency is that it has been revealed that the "Deep State" is real, and its spectacular.

I used to think all that government conspiracy talk was cray cray - now I don't see how I can rule ANY of it out.

Chuck Schumer who is not a back bencher bomb thrower said that if Trump took on the IC they could screw him six ways to Sunday. That's not idle chatter, he's not some nutter with a youtube channel, he is the Senate Minority Leader. He was making a threat against the President Elect of the US.

Bill Kristol (who is sadly demented but a prince of "thinkers" in DC) wrote that he preferred to be ruled by the Deep State rather than have a Trump administration.

Think about that.

But not too hard, because it will be hard to go to sleep at night.

Some people, commenters and others,on this site were naive (some still are), as to the nature of the fight that was happening then.

Dave's post was clear and respectful, and essentially was a well-written disagreement with Rick Wilson.
When the post got disappeared, the ONLY conclusion one could draw, would be that the person who did it wasn't interested in having a civil discussion about what was at the time, the uncertainty of a Trump candidacy.

And that's not ok. It never is, anywhere it's done, and in my mind ESPECIALLY here on this site.

333 I don't know if anyone else mentioned it, but this morning Central Michigan University went on lockdown. Today is traditionally the busiest Friday as students go home or on vacation for Spring Break.

Rumor says a student shot his parents dead when they came to pick him up. Police say he's a young black man who was hospitalized Thursday night after what may have been a bad reaction to drugs.

The Detroit radio stations have not pushed gun control. In fact, the calls have all been about personal responsibility and the problem of mental health issues in young people. So people here at least seem to have their heads on straight.

I don't think it hurts that Chief Craig of Detroit and other officials are big proponents of citizens getting training and using guns in self-defense.

Our local high school is having a walkout, but the administrators are going to be there to make sure they return after the rally. Police officers will also be on hand.

The local police have really been around the school lately. We had ALICE training this week and I was "shot" by a plain clothes police officer. It was less than a minute from the first shot in the hallway to him coming into a classroom and shooting several of us teachers meeting.

I'm glad that our administrators are taking security more seriously than previous ones.
