The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Public virtue is the vital spirit of republics and history shows that when this has decayed and the love of money has usurped its place, although the forms of free government may remain for a season, the substance has departed forever." --James Buchanan, Inaugural Address, 1857

Quote II

A bullet fired from an AR-15 travels 3x faster than one from a handgun…and yet the president and the NRA think giving teachers guns will stop a school shooter.”Lawrence O’Donnell

Quote III

The investigation is ostensibly about bribery and fraud, and I’m still at a total loss to understand what exactly here rises to the level of a federal case. From what is known, it appears to be the same old bullshit that’s been a fundamental part of college sports since college sports was invented: agents, coaches, sneaker companies, paying players under the table to come play for them because the rules don’t allow them to pay them atop the table. Barry Petchesky

The FBI is too busy protecting us from sleazy basketball players and not from:

Quote IV

What did I miss? Cowardly corporations punish NRA because FBI failed to act on info re: shooter and FL Sheriff had 4 deputies who stood outside and hid during gunfire that killed 17 innocent kids. How many NRA members did mass shootings? ZERO. Former Gov. Mike Huckabee

Remember the Polish cow who swam to freedom? She suffers a tragic end.

Tragic end for cow who escaped the slaughterhouse to live on an island: Bovine hero DIES while being transported by truck to a farm after it is captured following weeks of freedom.

The heroic red Limousin beef cow gained celebrity status after going on the run
She escaped captivity by charging at a fence and breaking a farm worker's arm
Despite evading capture for almost one month, she has died after being nabbed

The ONT Musical Interlude

February 25, 1995, At a private party for 1,200 select guests on the closing night of the Frank Sinatra Desert Classic golf tournament, Frank Sinatra sang before a live audience for the very last time. His closing song was 'The Best is Yet to Come'. via thisdayinmusic.com

Science. Is it really settled?

Good news for you drinking Morons Alcohol increases your longevity, exercise optional.

Moderate alcohol consumption may be vital in helping people live past the age of 90, new research suggests.

The average lifespan has steadily increased due to advancements in technology and medicine, among other facets of life. The newly published 90+ Study — which first launched in 2003 by researchers at the (UCI) — claimed that individuals who drank approximately two glasses of beer and wine daily were 18 percent less likely to be subjected to a premature death. People who exercised between 15 to 45 minutes a day reduced this risk by 11 percent, however.

Live longer with but with dementia?

It’s hardly a surprise that too much alcohol is bad for the body, including the brain. But a new study published Tuesday in The Lancet suggests that even doctors are underestimating its impact on our risk of developing dementia.

The researchers looked at a nationwide, anonymous database of more than 30 million adult French hospital patients who were discharged sometime between 2008 to 2013. They excluded those at risk of developing rare forms of dementia, such as those brought on by infectious diseases like HIV or other neurological disorders

So alchohol consumption is not settled but global warming is?

*****

Guess who won't be invited back to CPAC anytime soon? Mona Charen.

Declining to mention Trump by name, Charen said conservatives are guilty of "look[ing] the other way" when it comes to the president and other Republican men who have faced allegations of sexual misconduct.

"This was a party that was ready to ... endorse Roy Moore for Senate in the state of Alabama even though he was a credibly accused child molester," Charen said.

"You cannot claim that you stand for women, and put up with that," she told the crowd, as several members of the audience shouted, "Not true!"

Charen's comments were met with heavy boos inside the conference hall, and she was later spotted leaving the conference with a three-person security detail.

Too be honest with you I haven't heard about Mona in years. Is she even relevant?

So Saturday morning she asked what time she could start selling, so I blithely say 10. She heads out and I'm just hoping she doesn't get crushed by rejection. She comes back with $13.50...we're shocked that she made so much from her little drawings. Can't believe it actually. She said one guy asked her what she was raising money for and she says college, a car, and a house. She drew more pictures and went back out, wound up making $45! I think she's going to be ok....

88 Trumpenpanzer has totally flipped the script on school shooting. Have we ever seen it where the only topic was anything other than gun control? Nope. Never.

Trump has people talking about and considering alternatives for school safety. He's painting the Dems into a corner when they predictably will oppose any and all proposals for safety that are NOT confiscation.

Except those kids were genetically superior and attended an elite school...

(I honestly wonder if the SJWs actually read the books or just watched the movies while doing something else.)

No, Patton deserved his censure. The WWII US Army was not a professional army, but a recently trained citizen Army.

Soldiers with shell shock did not deserve that treatment, it was bad leadership, and the entire ETO knew about it very quickly, so bad for morale.

The Germans of all people, did best with shell shock by kind treatment, treatment close to the front, and caring officers. The JOs were supposed to remember the birthday of every soldier, and be supportive. The US Army learned a lot from the Wehrmacht personnel treatment after WWII.

Different people are motivated in different ways.

Some are brave because of something inside.
Some are brave because of their friends
Some are brave out of fear or shame

I'm inclined to give Patton the benefit of the doubt. He was a fighter and a student of war.

186 Declining to mention Trump by name, Charen said conservatives are guilty of "look[ing] the other way" when it comes to the president and other Republican men who have faced allegations of sexual misconduct.

I we are going to throw out any candidate who is ACCUSED of sexual misconduct, there will be almost no one who can run for office. All the opposing party will have to do is dig up some former secretary or staff member and get her to make an accusation. There has to be some sort of proof, or minimally, evidence that the person at least reported the incident to someone in authority, like police, when it happened. Or corroborating testimony from someone who knew about the incident at the time of the assault. Juanita Broderick had discussed the rape with others close to her at the time it happened. I'm not turning on a candidate based on some woman accusing him over a decade after the fact because he's running for office, when she never reported it or discussed it at the time.

Also, "Sexual Misconduct" could be anything, from a lewd comment, to getting drunk and patting someone's butt, to rape. How many men haven't made a lewd comment, or bragged about copping a feel?

Based on what Charen is saying any candidate could be gotten rid of with false accusations.

One of the interesting things that started in the late 90s and really blossomed after the election of Obama is the hard left tack taken up by many nominally rightwing orgs/spokespeople.

We know Obama was spying on Trump. We know he used the FBI/IRS/etc to go after conservative orgs. I think when the full history is revealed we'll find out that there was a broad carrot and stick effort to corral conservatives.

In some cases it will be money, in others blackmail, and in yet others threats of social ostracism.

Yeah I'm coming to the conclusion it would be money well spent to hire a maid.

My ma and dad had a Polish girl clean their house once a month. My ma would clean the house before she got there every time. That girl cleaned houses during the day, became a citizen, learned English and got a nursing degree at night. Told my ma, all she ever wanted was her own house with a swimming pool. Not thieves or chumps, good people.

It is truly ironic that people at colleges and universities across the country have been organizing to protest sweatshop labor in the Third World, when the greatest examples of sweatshop labor in America are on their own campuses.

Where else can a nationwide cartel work people for no money at all, while collecting millions of dollars from the fruits of their labor? That cartel is the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the people whose work brings in millions at the gate are the athletes who play on college teams.

In big-time college football and basketball, it is not uncommon for the coach to make more money than the college or university president -- sometimes several times what the academic chief executive makes. But if any money finds its way into the hands of the players who put their bodies on the line, that is called a "scandal."

294 The rule of thumb I have heard is if you consider someone a threat to your or someone else's lives then shoot and keep shooting until they are no longer a threat.

If you fire a warning shot you may get arrested.

If you fire only a couple shots (double tap) you could also be charged because you were too cool under pressure.

If you keep shooting then your fear is obvious.

Sounds good to me.

If you go to church, you might want to talk to your pastor/Priest.

If not (and maybe anyways) there are grief counselors and some you can get help with for free. Check out a senior center for ideas. A local hospital may know. Welfare office. Phone book.

I've read about this and it will vary person to person. Some don't change anything. Some remove every reminder quickly to get over it.

I'd check with someone you know has gone thru this if you do.

Even a church you don't go to will help you find someone.

Well maybe not a Satanic Temple or Scientology.

339 go to church, you might want to talk to your pastor/Priest.

Fifty years ago if the cops ran away from a shooter in school, they would have been fired and publicly humiliated.

Firing this guy would go a long way to say it is no longer business as usual.

482 Another thought on AR15s being military weapons.

Glocks were invented for the military. There's no distinction between civilian versions of Glocks and other Glock-like pistols and what militaries use. Navy Seals are now going with the Glock 19, which you can buy yourself right now.

I believe that a big reason AR15s are popular is that they're fun (and relatively cheap) to shoot at ranges.

514 So many mass shootings lately, and what's bizarre to me is that they all but disappear out of the news cycle after a few days.

After Fast and Furious, I do not put anything beyond these ghouls.

So many little puzzle pieces dovetailing at this school. Son of a CNN vp, son of an FBI agent, both of whom are eerily ready with scripted responses blaming Trump, Sheriff who appears to have had pics taken with Hillary, Debbie Mayohead, other Dem leaders, Fusion GP woman backing the March for Whatever, all pretty damned pat if you ask me.

They have databases filled with information about gun owners and whackjobs and every combination thereof.

It wouldn't have been very hard to set this kid off.

Im drunk and my tn foil hat is shiny bright, but I would not put anything past these monsters any more.

519 We'll soon see, but as I predictulated in an earlier thread, I think that before the Khmer Rouge Kids' March to Disarm the Adults, or whatever the idiotic thing is called, actually happens in March, the main focus of any remaining attention to the FL incident will be the astonishing level of law enforcement failure.

The horror show is coming out bit by bit. And kids from the school other than the Hitlerjugend now featured camping it up behind the scenes at their TV appearances are starting to speak out - with a completely different message of course. And at some point - actually a good measure of the degree of Truth Suppression achieved by the "press" in this case - the country might learn of the jaw-dropping policy in place for years in Broward (and elsewhere) to ignore crime among the school-aged. Which, deliciously enough, has a big Beltway component in the form of Obama DOJ and DOEd policies.

My theory is that D-voters keep wanting to be "rescued" from whatever the side effects were of the last interference.

It's not like Californians can't wait until libs get a hold of central power, so that they can, with the help of other blue states, enforce their "reforms" on other states--it's just that when there is a central government that displeases them--they want to rebel from it. It's not like they've learned anything about the dangers of centralization of power.

I mean really, I've been trying for a long time to see both sides, but these days I'm more inclined to say don't give the scorpion a ride across the river.

They become more mindless will-to-power with every passing day. This Democratic memo is a shit-show. Full of bad faith "rebuttals" to points that Nunes didn't make based on the idea that he's "implying" more than he stated in the facts he stated.

Back when I was living aboard the Sloop New Dawn (before Hurricane Ike destroyed the boat), I dated a rather liberal, granola-ish, Buhddist wanna-be kinda lass...who happened to be a rather smokin' hot redhead, but that is NOT beside the point, now is it?

Dated long enough that she had experienced much of my Conservative world, to include lessons at shooting range(s), my own good cooking, Conservative literature & blogs, my own conservative writing, my IMPECCIBLE and CHIVALROUS behavior to her, her friends, family, co-workers, etc.

Didn't work out, as she was still just too far "left", and I ran out of patience.

Couple years later, I read her singles ad. It heavily featured, "Seeking Strong CONSERVATIVE man with TRADITIONAL values, and etc., etc.

I count that a victory, in the larger scheme of things.... and I hope she's found happiness, fulfillment and joy.

To be sure, I also hope that she's learned how to keep a neat, clean and uncluttered house.

An F-5 tornado, might've been an improvement.

Who knows, maybe Conservatism had a positive effect there, too? Perhaps, but I'll likely never know.

What you haven't addressed, is that, based on what you have said here, the woman was justified in getting you fired for stalker-like behavior. Look, she's Persian, and well-educated, to boot. Those women are notoriously full of themselves, and won't settle for a plebian guy, no way, no how. So all your mooning about her no doubt skeeved her out, big time.

I'm not suggesting you were doing anything criminal, or reprehensible, mind you. But to a woman who clearly regards herself as light-years out of your league, any sign of romantic interest from you would be icky and unwelcome.

588 AOP, which is why I've adopted an avoidance strategy about women ever since then.

From now on, it doesn't matter to me what the woman's background is. I don't approach or talk to them, period. I'm that way everywhere, not just at work.

Especially with all the the MeToo bullshit going around, I'm probably going to stick with this strategy for the rest of my life. I've decided, the ONLY time I'll ever approach a woman again, is if I'm 100% certain she welcomes it, and who knows if that will ever happen. Oh well. I'm resigned to that fact.

It's frustrating but at least I've stayed out of jail and out of trouble since 2010 with this strategy. With all respect to all of you, I HAVE changed and I HAVE learned from the experience. I'm not screwing around making all the same dumb mistakes and blaming the world for "not understanding me."

Young couple next door belong, guy is just a passive lurker, he passes on some things of common interest when they're newsworthy.

Sort of like with "social media", however, I just don't want my estimation of people to fall further than it starts (fairly low), so I don't expose myself to it. In another place, it might be different. And even though this area (SoCal slightly inland suburb) is far less stupid than a coastal, beach, or NorCal urban area - I have reason to think it's stupid enough.

Just no default respect for a huge segment of the populace any more, nor sense of connection or interest.

647 Interesting, I think the entire FL lower house GOP caucus wrote a letter to Gov. Scott asking him to suspend Sheriff Coward-Clueless, which apparently the gov has the authority to do under FL's constitution ("for malfeasance, misfeasance, neglect of duty or incompetence").

Have not the slightest idea whether this is serious, in terms of concrete consequences. But it certainly is the right thing, and should be part of this slow-moving wave of information I talked about shifting the focus where it belongs in this incident.

I think one GOPer in Congress called on Wray to resign - though that may have been for something else (!) - sort of a measure of how THAT place is going.

Do not know Wray, but he strikes me as a Beltway paper shuffler, not the sort needed for the FBI's existential crisis period (which this is). Would die to know what Trump and Gen. Kelly think of the FBI situation these days.

suffice to say it's similar to the Nosler one on the gub thread.

9 single rounds, clean after each one, then 10-30, clean every 5 shots.

1) You have been posting here since at least 2006, which is impressive in and of itself

744 Well, I am going to call it a night. Expecting a service call from Mediacom in the morning to fix my Internet, which is working fine right now. It has been sort of flaky all week, and quite outright on Saturday night. Was back on Sunday morning. I called their tech line, and after finally getting a human being on the line, they admitted there had been a spate of calls from my neighborhood. Which was what I figured. The power company has been replacing poles on a nearby street, and the cable is carried on poles.

So they phoned this afternoon, a robo-call, that said "press one if you don't want the service call, or hang up if you still do". So, I hung up. Because, if they had found and fixed the problem, and then taken the trouble to call back and tell me that they had identified a problem, and fixed it, I would have canceled the service call. So, now I get to tell the service guy in person that they are doing a poor job of communication. And their service guys are contractors.

751 Hang in there, qdpsteve.

Very honest and intimate conversations with my wife have given me a perspective on women. Often enough, women's first need is to feel safe--which is why women are attracted to "bad boys" and males who can express power. Only after that has been fulfilled, do they care about the male "sensitivity".

Don't let women think of you as creepy. If they're going to think negative of you, blow it off. Worry about being an honorable guy, and not so much a "nice guy". You can be a friend if a woman does not respect you, but you can't be their *choice*, and that's what it's all about.

764 Following the gist of this conversation tonight (this morning) is not an easy task. Perhaps I came to the table late :-). Who the hell is Mona Charen anyway and why was she at CPAC? A closet liberal in RINO clothing?

765 Secular morals say they can offer the same things as Christianity, but I've never seen secular morals with the same emphasis on forgiveness.

No, no, no. Secularism claims to offer a system of moral values, but it can't provide any justification for it. It is religion stripped bare of everything except commandments. It offers nothing except nihilism, plus it adds on arbitrary rules.

Postmodernism can't offer anything like a system of morals because everything is relative to them. If there's no black and white, and it's all shades of gray, people are just going to do whatever feels good without any sympathy or remorse for those they screw along the way.

You need objective, universal standards to have a functional moral code. I think we need to make the case for objective morality. In the absence of religion, you can still find something for it to stand on - respect for the rights of others. All of the great religions on the world agree on what constitute high crimes: Murder, rape, assault, theft, fraud, extortion, etc. All of these crimes have a unifying theme, the violation of the rights of another person to be secure in their body or property.

Transgressing against another's rights would be objectively immoral, under such a system. Now why is it so important to codify such a thing? I mean, our religions already cover this, right?

It's because the Left has gotten as far as it has by assaulting religion. They know that if they knock out that pillar of our society, the morality goes with it, along with a lot of other things that stand in the way of their "revolution".

If we give the morality its own pillar, and can do this with other traditional concepts as well, focusing on attacking will be less effective, and they'll have to divide their attention on more targets.

772 The "Promise" program is a DOJ and Eric Holder dreamed up pile of crap that pays school districts and local law enforcement to NOT report crimes by minority kids to keep them out of the pipeline to prison. No mention or consideration of their victims. They just have to tolerate them, be terrorized by them, and I suppose be tolerant and understanding of thugs.

How is this legal? Constitutional? Equal protection under the law applies to victims too I always presumed. And they wonder why schools have turned into feral animal zoos. And public officials not reporting crimes should be considered aiding and abetting. Reporting should be mandator like reporting sexually abused children. Children who are often adults under crimial statutes are committing crimes against children and teachers (and terrorizing them) just like sexual abusers do. Diversion programs let the thugs progress up the criminal ladder.

I can't wait to hear about all the pearls of wisdom contained in a book by a Harvard Law grad who couldn't make the grade as a junior associate, even though her firm assigned her a special partner mentor because of her status as an oppressed minority woman.

She couldn't cut it at the only lawyer job she ever had, even with the bosses holding her hand and making special exceptions for her (like keeping her on for a while even after she had flunked the Illinois bar exam).

But now she's going to get paid $30 million to lecture the rest of us about how to be a success. LOL. Like Hillary Clinton, the only reason Michelle Obama ended up as anything better than a counter clerk at McDonald's is because of who she married.

and the only reason Barrack Hussein was anybody is because of who he politically married ... Valerie Jarrett. That married him into that communist crime family, and whichever BigMoney was escorting him through college despite his incompetence.

Barrack's brilliant writings while President of Harvard Law Review (or whatever it was) ... nah, he never wrote anything. Columbia? He was smokin in the boys room, did he even go to class?
