Thread before the Gardening Thread: Musings on Migration from a Hungarian [KT]

Serving your mid-day open thread needs

howhungarian.jpg

How well do you know Hungarian

Earlier this month, a German human rights activist admitted that Muslim refugees have no intention of adopting our values. Said it out loud.

Writing in The Brussels Journal, George Handlery (a Hungarian educated in the USA, now living in Switzerland) weighs in on migration into Europe as a more general topic. The whole piece is worth reading, but here are a few highlights. Okay, so the English is slightly awkward sometimes. How is your Hungarian?:

Let us begin with the problem's origins and magnitude. From there we go to meeting this modern version of the "migration of peoples" that had toppled Greco-Roman civilization. This hesitantly made analogy is anathema in influential circles: They insist upon problem solving within their ideology's confines. Thus, the Old World is as helpless to cope, as was the Roman Empire before 476.

Opposition to migration is growing in Europe:

A recent example comes from Hungary. (Like her neighbors, in 500 years they have not managed to integrate their resistant Gypsies. Unless, of course, renaming them "Roma" passes as a solution.) After calling the EU as solid as "Swiss cheese", the government sent an inquiry to its citizens to discover what they want.

The preamble: "There are those according to whom, Brussels' policy on immigration and terrorism has failed and that this demands new approaches. Are you in agreement with the statements below? "

A shortened sample of some of the questions: "Would you support it if, contrary to Brussels' permissive policy, the government introduces more restrictive regulations?"

"Do you agree that after the least possible delay, illegal border crossers need to be repatriated?"

As a side note, a Gypsy family has been hanging out periodically at a McDonalds not far from us, begging, in the last couple of months. My mother had a Gypsy family living across the street from her a few years ago. Their habits were . . . distinctive. Have you ever met a Gypsy in America? Back to the final recommendation in Handlery's post:

There are some very simple ways of stopping this. Ship everyone straight back where they came from. No passport holder of ANY country that refuses to take back their citizens will be permitted to enter Europe for any reason.. That may well be too draconian for the delicate stomachs of our ruling elite, so go about it in a more gentle way. Since every country that sends these hordes also receives substantial aid from most EU countries continue with the aid but deduct the cost their illegal citizens occur, be that housing, welfare, health care or education, tote it all up and consider it aid. Those countries will be slamming shut their border so fast you'll be able to hear the slam in Europe..

Think that would work? Might it be adapted in some way to the USA?

Here's a famous, partially-assimilated European Gypsy, at least a fantasy Gypsy.

Django Reinhardt was a Gypsy. He seemed to assimilate pretty well.

Have a great weekend.

Now that Trump's flushing these so-called conservatives out of the brush,

I suspect that most of them like Bill Kristol were always liberals but didn't have the ability or mad skillz to make it in the Libtard Big Time MSM,

so they became Pet Conservatives for liberal outlets.

They could be ineffective and ineffectual mouthpieces for ineffective Republican/conservative initiatives and yet,

still attend all those dishy Washington/New York parties.

Trump blew up all that by actually wanting to do the right thing by Americans and the Middle Class.

44 My grandfather graduated NYU a very long time ago, and before he began his career as a teacher, traveled to Hungary and lived there for almost two years as a single man, to experience a different culture.

He'd had Latin in school and had learned German. In Hungary, he gained fluency in the language, and his Latin and German was no help at all, because Hungarian is derived from something else entirely.

Gramps was an avid photographer, and a chemist, so did all his own developing and printing. I have a box of his glass negatives from when he was in Europe. The scenes are quote pastoral.

He subscribed to two newspapers his whole life, one German, the other Hungarian, just to keep up with the languages.

Sadly, after he retired, the Board brought in multi culti global types, and though the school is now in a ritzy neighborhood (during my time it wasn't) with bells and whistles for the bells and whistles, I don't think the education is as rock solid. They haven't had a National Merit Scholar in many years, and there were six in my graduating class. Anecdotal, but I think telling in the pedagogy.

It seems there is a very strong correlation with Conservative values, and areas that have diseases being imported from outside the area.

That strong borders, and defending your own culture becomes dominant thoughts when that outsider, could literally kill you just from his presence.

Note, Diseases that we had wiped out in the US, are back... we are committing cultural suicide by NOT defending our own culture... and celebrating the very reason everyone wants to come here in the first place.

65 @15 One point to consider, Western Europeans have never managed to form a unified, multi-ethnic authoritarian state.
--------------------

Arguably, the Roman Empire was this. The Romans would conquer another group of people, and then the members of the newly conquered group would have the opportunity to become Roman citizens.

Where it all started to fall apart was when the barbarians started letting themselves across the border, invariably cut a deal that involved themselves becoming nominal Roman subjects, and then didn't integrate (which was fine with the Romans at the time, since they saw the barbarians as buffers against the other nomadic groups - particularly that one led by some guy named Attila...).

Since then?

No.

And I would argue that Islam has also not had a successful multi-ethnic empire. Yes, they've had empires that ruled over multiple ethnicities. But so did the Austrians. Adherents of Islam - at least in the Middle East - appear to be very conscious of the ethnicity of others, particularly if the one being conscious is Arab.

91 Django Reinhardt nearly lost his life when the caravan he and his wife lived in caught fire when he knocked over a candle on his way to bed. His wife made artificial flowers from extremely flammable celluloid. They caught fire, engulfing the wagon in flames almost immediately. Reinhardt dragged himself and his wife through the fire to safety, but suffered extensive burns on his left hand and other areas. He received first- and second-degree burns over half his body. His right leg was paralyzed, and the fourth and fifth fingers of his left hand were badly burned. Doctors believed that he would never play guitar again, and they intended to amputate one of his legs. Reinhardt refused to have the surgery and left the hospital after a short time; he was able to walk within a year with the aid of a cane.

Two of his fingers remained paralyzed. By sheer will, he taught himself to overcome his now permanent handicap by using only his thumb and two fingers.

You can still see vestigial remnants of the Soviet influence there, I'm glad they leave them standing so you may witness what a pathetic, vacant ideology the whole thing is.
-----------------------

I've got two board games that deal with the struggle against Communism in Eastern Europe. The first is called '1989' (it's a sort of sequel to Twilight Struggle, if anyone here has played that game). It focuses on 1989, which is the year that the pro-Soviet governments collapsed in EVERY single one of the Eastern European nations (it was also the year of the Tianenmen Square demonstrations, which also get a nod). It's a two player game - democrats versus communists (the thing is that while the governments are going to fall, the replacement government might be dominated by the communists-in-all-but-name).

The other game is called "Days of Ire", and is about the 1956 Hungarian Uprising. I haven't played this one yet, but it's a game for up to four people - either a cooperative game, or a multiple Hungarian players versus Comrade Zhukov. Note, though, that the game ends with the historical agreement between the Hungarian demonstrators and the Soviets... that was then promptly broken just a few days later when the Soviets invaded.

Whereas Western and Chinese empires have managed to last for quite awhile in most cases. Alexander the Great being one that didn't, though the three successor states did survive for quite awhile.

99 I don't know if these companies actually contribute to the NRA or just offer discounts of some sort to members.

It doesn't look like they actually contribute anything. They benefited from the association by attracting NRA members with the discount, and the NRA attracted members with being able to offer discounts as a benefit. I think it won't hurt the NRA at all to do away with all member discount programs. That's not what their core membership is about, and I think this demonstrates remarkably well why the NRA exists to begin with. The actions of these companies work pretty well as a de facto membership drive. Hell, I'm considering becoming a lifetime member just to spite the SJW teens.

125 'We Szekeleys have a right to be proud, for in our veins flows the blood of many brave races who fought as the lion fights, for lordship. Here, in the whirlpool of European races, the Ugric tribe bore down from Iceland and the fighting spirit which Thor and Wodin gave them, which their Berserkers displayed to such fell intent on the seaboards of Europe, ay, and of Asia and Africa too, till the peoples thought that the were-wolves themselves had come. Here, too, when they came, they fought the Huns, whose warlike fury had swept the earth like a living flame, till the dying peoples held that in their veins ran the blood of those old witches, who, expelled from Scythia had mated with the devils in the desert. Fools, fools! What devil or what witch was ever so great as Attila, whose blood is in these veins? Is it a wonder that we were a conquering race; that we were proud; that when the Magyar, the Lombard, the Avar, the Bulgar, or the Turk poured his thousands on our frontiers, we drove them back? Is it strange that when Arpad and his legions swept through the Hungarian fatherland, he found us here when he reached the frontier? And when the Hungarian flood swept eastward, the Szekeleys were claimed as kindred by the victorious Magyars, and to us for centuries was trusted the guarding of the frontier of Turkey-land; ay and more than that, endless duty of the frontier guard, for, as the Turks say, "water sleeps, and enemy is sleepless". Who more gladly than we throughout the Four Nations received the "bloody sword", or at its warlike call flocked quicker to the standard of the King? When was redeemed that great shame of my nation, the shame of Cassova, when the flags of the Wallach and the Magyar went down beneath the Crescent, who was it but one of my own race who as Voivode crossed the Danube and beat the Turk on his own ground? This was a Dracula indeed! Woe was it that his own unworthy brother, when he had fallen, sold his people to the Turk and brought the shame of slavery upon them! . . . Again, when, after the battle of Mohacs, we threw off the Hungarian yoke, we of the Dracula blood were amongst their leaders, for our spirit would not brook that we were not free. Ah, young sir, the Szekeleys - and the Dracula as their heart's blood, their brains and their swords - can boast a record that mushroom growths like the Hapsburgs and the Romanoffs can never reach. The warlike days are over. Blood is too precious a thing in these days of dishonourable peace; and the glories of the great races are as a tale that is told.'

We have been othered. Like skinhead nazis.

It will hurt those NRA members that work for those companies, and many other companies whose HR departments are all SJW. People will get othered, will not gain promotions, maybe will be forced out.

On the NRA topic - I don't know if these companies actually

155 Ethnic Hungarians are not Gypsies (there are a lot of Gypsies in Hungary, but they're considered a foreign people there, as they are elsewhere in Europe).

Romanians are not Gypsies either. The PC term for Gypsy is "Roma", which is a totally different thing from "Romanian".

Hungarians (Magyars) are descended from tribes from extreme Eastern Europe (the Ural Mountains region) that invaded what is now Hungary around the 9th to 10th Century.

Romanians are Slavs, like Russians or Poles. Where they differ is that Romania was conquered and thoroughly assimilated by Rome (hence the name) and accordingly they speak a Romance language related to Latin and Spanish rather than a Slavic language like their Slav neighbors. Genetically, though, they're Slavs.

The Romani (Gypsies) are descended from people who were kicked out of Northern India around 500 AD. Their closest genetic relatives are the "Untouchable" (Dalit) caste in India.

177 I tend to apply Occams Razor a lot of the idiocy we see. Most of it can be blamed on stupidity and nativity, not evil conspiracies. But sometimes, like with immigration, evil conspiracy seem more likely than the easy explanation. It is almost reaching that point in the Parkland shooting. So many bad decisions/incompetence almost make it seem it was allowed to happen. (Security cameras with a 20 minute time delay? Is that even possible?) The MSM going into immediate hyper-drive attacking guns and NRA to new levels of hysteria and the obviously planned student crusade adds to the sense of suspicion. This reminds me a of the supposed Charlottesville KKK riots, which were a nothing-burger until promoted to a crises by the MSM and Dems.

Really hate wearing a tinfoil hat but sometime it seems less crazy than the BS official story.

178 " No passport holder of ANY country that refuses to take back their citizens will be permitted to enter Europe for any reason.. That may well be too draconian for the delicate stomachs of our ruling elite, so go about it in a more gentle way."

That would be a great solution, or one step in the right direction. But the EU bureaucrats are the draconian ones, and their "delicate" stomachs feast on destruction of the masses and their strong cultural identities.

The multi-culti diversity religion is a ruse ... they intend to break country heritage since they want all the EU under the (unelected bureaucratic) EU flag. The Eastern Bloc has enough history of Soviet dictators, so they are the ones most strongly rejecting Brussel's "refugee" quota demands.

Countries are their people and their heritage, but the corporate/banker conglomerates have printed enough funny money paper that they feel they own the world, which they may ... On fake Paper. They now move toward diaspora, moving the third world in, and rooting out traditional America via by PC mandates of diversity and race quotas.

Soros and the goons and political hacks have long been planning to bring us under their thumb. Americanism will unite us again.

Europe was peaceful after WW2 since the countries mostly had their sovereign identities and borders. Japan is praised for their polite society, but they are all Japanese. Scandinavian countries were admired but also, 95% "demographically pure" till the recent destructive Muslim invasion. (watch Paul Joseph Watson videos to see how that is going)

The West Won, but has to regroup and cling to their regional religion(s) and guns and roses, not cling to false globalist propaganda. Flooding us with third world peoples is a subversive effort to destroy us, not make us stronger.

207 From the comments it sounds like we are getting pummeled. Why be surprised?

There are many groups Obama organized during and after his Presidency.

Soros has his groups who will jump on any bandwagon that will help their cause.

Clinton's have their groups...more shady.

Then you have the left groups, who keep growing, like weeds.

You have the wealthy celebrities.

Then there are the true believers.

And the right has never organized and I guess we are not going to. Because even after a year of Trump, we still haven't. We have no mechanism to rally the troops and make calls. The left out-organizes us every time. Politics are downstream from culture. So until someone or some group decides to take the reins, this will continue.

I keep thinking the RNC or the conservative media will do so. Or blog owners. Or Steyn and TuCa & media types. Or some Pac. Or grassroots. Some group of leaders. But looks like no.

So I can't get my hair on fire every time. I don't have the resources or abilities to organize a group, so I do what I can individually, but it's not enough. Until we formally organize into groups, or a group, and fight back, expect these situations to continue.

Trump winning is not enough long term. He is erasing Obama's legacy, and someone can erases Trump's.

I'm not being Debbie Downer, I'm being realistic. And I'm resigning myself to facts, bcz I can't keep getting upset and disappointed. And I'm sick of banging the drum in posts about things that need doing. So just sayin...and JMO.

I view most nations as essentially extended families; people in Europe never ask (or never used to, at any rate) each other where they're from: they're from that country, since Adam first felt up Eve, and at some level they're probably all related to some extent.

The US is the exception, by virtue of being a nation of immigrants, the US is more like a club than a family, but the principle still obtains: a nation is a group of people united by language, custom, values, and in most cases, blood.

Undoubtedly they do. There are few pure races in Europe, no matter what Hitler fantasized about. Hell, most Europeans still have Neanderthal blood in them.

Genetically, Romanians are closely related to Serbs, Croats, and Bulgarians, so if you consider those to be Slavs, Romanians probably should fall in that category as well.

On the other hand, these are Europeans we're talking about. The Serbs and Croats are essentially genetically identical, but may get violent if you try to point that out. Serbs are Orthodox and use Cyrillic, while Croats are Catholic and use the Latin alphabet. Totally different people. Obviously. Even though they look exactly the same and live a virtually identical lifestyle. :-)

Another aspect is that while the Left is persistent, it is also brittle. Look at how they lost their shit over the Tea Party, and were so insecure that they began the pathetic "Coffee Party" ("See, we have a 'grassroots' movement too." Not.)

Or how, stung by Rush Limbaugh & Co. they started the execrable (and ill-fated) "Air America" to compete.

Or at any demonstration, they'll list 25 nonexistent organizations - ginned up for this one purpose - as supporting them, each consisting of some permutation and combination of a handful of leftists.

Events such as these lead me to suspect that their support isn't nearly as widespread as they try to convince us, and they know it.

They fight the fight where it must be fought, in the mostly collapsed judiciary. They join/lead lawsuits on key issues before state and federal courts.

Justice Thomas the other day said the 2nd is "a disfavored right" before the current SCOTUS. Decorum and all, I'm sure, but this kind of under-statement drives me crazy. I prefer the much more accurate language of Roberts (spit), back before he went off the rails, in his stunned dissent in Hamdan v. Bush (military tribunals) - where he said the court's behavior "threatened the very constitutional system" (quoting from memory).

Can't find expert court-watcher comment on this specific matter, but seems to me that since the 4th's decision on the MD gun law, the inferior courts are in open revolt, and have effectively "over-turned" Heller from below - for now.

So far - and in far wimpier a fashion than I actually expected - SCOTUS has appeared to finally draw the line at *some* of the lawlessness, in their small-ball smack-downs of the 9th on the EO cases. If SCOTUS doesn't move dramatically to restore the law - and even their OWN system wherein they rule the roost - there's really no limit on the damage.

They started traveling in larger groups after a lot of tenant farmers got thrown off their land in the 1700's and 1800's, and they used to have their own Gaelic dialects.

The Roma have been talked about above. There are four main tribes in the US and UK, but there are more tribes in Europe.

The thing to understand about them is that they have an extensive religious and secular law code, much like kosher law or Indian caste law. But it only applies to Roma. Everybody else, including Roma who decide not to live according to their laws, is fair game. Non-Roma can never really become Roma, either.

Obviously not every Roma person is going to do bad stuff, and some Roma join non-Roma religions in all sincerity. Others are just too smart to mess with people for no reason. But inside the group, they are going to be taught to worry more about proper respect for the campfire than for a non-Roma.

Anyway, the general impression left by their laws and traditions is that everything in the world actually belongs to Roma, or was created for their use. So stealing from you is actually taking back what they have been allowing you to use.

Some non-Roma do manage to get along with Roma - usually by having an 18 Charisma, a high Dexterity, and a good sense of humor. Everybody else is out of luck.

They had it going gradually but then Obama put the pedal to the floor and Hillary lost ... now the crime syndicates are being revealed right up to FBI/Deep State level ... and they are not surrendering, and the Bildgerbergs are re-positioning, adjusting strategy.

So can we compromise with them, or does the chaos collapse a lot of things? Magic Eight Ball says "ask again later".

To put it in terms familiar to AOSHQ commenters:

* number of convictions of Clinton cabal/Obama administration senior figures in connection with the Mega-Scandal = 0

* number of new laws abridging 2A rights arising from FL incident = 0

Sticking with this theme - wake me when any new actual laws infringing 2A rights, enacted directly in reaction to FL, are on the books.

Yes, but that supports my thesis. If they were more secure, more confident, they'd have just laughed off Rush Limbaugh.

But they didn't. They were stung into trying to emulate him, despite having all of the MSM on their side. That suggests that they are nervous and uncertain about their own support.

Sort of like the poster "confused" by the GOA/NRA thing, we don't like to air the laundry in front of "civilians." I'll just say, to an outsider, you can't understand some of the things that get said about the NRA unless you have been around the NRA's internal politics for 40 years or so.

There is intense infighting between factions in NRA, and competitive event sponsorship has been on the out-slide for a long time. The political activists consider the competitive shooters to be pests. Inside the "fraternity," newer, showier, funner shoot-em-ups have been promoted at the expense of the traditional shooting sports. Camp Perry became a civil war, and all my sides lost. "My" nationals are now at two places in Indiana.

This goes back at least to the Neal Knox days, and it keeps getting worse. In USAS, the Olympic shooting division that the NRA disowned in the 90's (and, possibly, "with cause"), you'll find some fairly anti-gun characters. You haven't had a gun fight until you've talked with a Brit international shooter who thinks we are crazy for being able to drive armed to the range.

That's why I refer to the "collapsed judiciary/constitutional system".

I don't think there's a bit of hyperbole in that formulation, and I'd dare the top constitutional scholars alive to debate the point.

Sure - in MOST areas, the courts are not arbitrary, off the rails, lawless, and chaotic. Areas that affect daily commerce. Imagine the sort of lawlessness and judicial rule we see in things like the 2A, marriage redefinition, or election integrity applied to contract law. The economy would shut down.

THEN - the 90% of the country that doesn't notice or care would suddenly get religion.

Closest we've come is the still-astonishing behavior of the court in not smacking down the looting of Chrysler bond-holders in the 2008 "crisis". I don't know how that turned out - but it was an appropriate introductory flourish for the lawlessness of the Obama years, and a shocking thing that - if extended and continued, would literally derail our economy (no hyperbole).

Fun fact: the bondholder who got hosed the worst was the Michigan State Teachers' Pension Fund, a union that doubtless supported Obama.

You've got to laugh.

(As yet further proof of the left's lack of business/financial acumen (of a piece with "profit to earnings ratio") was their lack of sympathy for the lootees because they were hedge funds. Apparently they did not realize that hedge funds aren't investing their own money, but rather that of the limited partners (in this case, a union pension fund). Sure, it hurt the hedge fund a bit too, since they get only a percentage of the carry but also a fraction of the profits, but the people who really got hosed were the limited partners.

Hungarians are very fond of Ukrainian ketchup and horseradish condiments. When people visit Ukraine from Budapest friends always ask to bring some.

329 Actually, Hungarian gypsies would not do well on the Hungarian language quiz. That would require literacy.

Gypsies still have their own language, by the way, called Lovari. It only has about 500 words, and it still quite close to the Indian dialect of their ancestors.

332 @326 Not sure what there is to even see there, related to the battle. Need to research that. I have a gigantic European battlefield tour dreamt of/planned, but the Soviet ones are a bit of a quandary. Not much to actually visit.
-----------------------

I suspect that the big draw for a war history buff visiting Russia would be the tank museum at Kubinka. As for actual battlefields? Dunno. But I suspect that if you asked in the right places (I do know of one - the forums for Battlefront Miniatures get a lot of Russians who are fans of World War 2, but they're shutting down the 15th of next month) you'd get a list pretty quickly.

No, I discovered, at least in my case. After a lengthy argument over the last jedi in which I stated I was done with Disney, when I meant to say 'Disney Star Wars', I got to thinking and there's a bunch of stuff set to auto-record on my DVR that are still there out of inertia, and I cleared out more than I expected. 346 A few years ago we went to Fla to a family owned group of 4 cottages on the beach. We rented our favorite and arrived to find an odd "family" in the neighboring cottage. We went to the beach and they were there, the women fully clothed, the men in shorts and the children completely naked. It was weird. I went back to the cabin and they followed me. They began to pack up their car and load their things as it was check out time for them. One of the women came and knocked on my door. She said they had stayed in the cabin we were in and she left something on top of the cabinets. She wanted me to get on a stepstool and "search". I was very suspicious about that and then I heard a noise. The glass door behind me (which I had locked when I came in) rattled. I looked around and 2 young men of theirs were standing there trying to look unsuspicious. The woman kept asking me to check the top of the cabinet for her (I forgot what) all the while they were eyeing my purse sitting on the table beside the locked glass door. I told the woman to send the men away, she could come in, I would lock the door behind her and she could get on the stepstool and look for whatever. If she found/didnt find, I would unlock the door for her to leave. She wanted nothing to do with that and left. So did the young men at the back glass door. I was so shaken I called the owners who lived across the street. One of them came over and oversaw this group leaving. A few minutes later, the local police arrived and made a big show of following them off the island. The police came back and told the owner and us they would keep a close watch out for a few days in case that group came back. The police said they had reports from up and down the coast of gypsy family gangs staying in places and robbing other guests who were careless about securing their apts/condos/cottages, cars, etc. They didnt come back but that scared the dickens out of me. My Mother in Law was robbed at a train station in Hungary when she came to Europe to visit us and take a tour by gypsy gang--stay far, far away, not a good people in my experience

350 There's a reason English has so many words.

Also because WE opened the door with other countries laws being able to be enforced here.

Because we did it to get Noriega... we now say that if you break US Law, even if you are in another country, we can come get you...

Soon we will see EU hate speech laws being enforced on people in the US... because they can be READ in the EU... its almost inevitable unless there is a MAJOR push back from the Non Nanny Men of this country.

----------------------

There's already been some pushback against this sort of thing here in the US. I don't know if you remember libel tourism. The way it worked was that a book would get published in the US that was accurate, but critical of a group (usually Islam). The book would be sold in Great Britain. Someone in Great Britain would then sue for libel in British courts, where truth is not an absolute defense. The British court would then reward a judgement against the book's author.

Fortunately, Congress passed a law several years ago that made such judgements unenforceable in the US.

This.

When I donated, I didn't give a flip about ANY associated programs. I didn't want the free hats, decals, tote bags, whatever either.

I donated to help their legislative activism and educational programs. That's it. That's why I got annoyed with all the mailings after becoming a member. They were wasting limited resources to remind me to do what I was already doing.

Just take my money and be happy. Don't pitch your own product anymore, much less ancillary products I don't give a crap about.

But these corporations now pulling back their coupons? That just helps me capitalize on my time as the list of companies I might've done business with is reduced.
