As to the actual painting at the top, this is a woman who has seen much sadness and has slogged through it, day by day, taking care of her regular customers and her family and trying not to give in to the pains of life. The artist captures the expression of this life on her face well, I think. Excellent choice.

This is an impressive painting. Almost the opposite of 'romantic', it stresses the rather realistic figure dead center in the frame, staring out at the viewer. Gierymski captured the age and woes of the woman's life in her expression and hands. Her hands are busy with knitting or something similar because she must not waste time or rest. The realism of the figure is emphasized by the soft background and her well-worn clothes. Even the richer colors in the fruit and parts of her clothing are slightly muted, not jewel-like. It focuses on her face and hands.
The painting is not just a single moment. It suggests a life story leading to the image caught on canvas, at least to me. I don't know if the artist was making a social statement or just found the woman to be an interesting figure. Posted by: JTB at February 23, 2018 09:56 AM (V+03K) 113

There's a meme that the cop guarding the school was justified because he only had a cop gun (presumably something like a Glock) while the shooter had military gear. I'm skeptical.
We're talking engagement in close quarters where long-range accuracy is not a factor. Glocks were designed for the military and shoot just as fast. AR15s seem to have smaller rounds than your typical Glock which are 9mms to 45s. Mag capacity for both are large. And let's see how well it all fares under the glaring spotlights of civil suits by the families that lost kids. The Broward Coward cop appears to be one of the team set up to whitewash the student crime. Something tells me they're going to regret the media attention. If I'm ever in a situation where I'm approached by the media, I'll politely decline to be interviewed. It's not worth the scrutiny. Mall shooting in Oklahoma 10 or so years ago by guy with AK, offed himself when he SAW a police officer with a handgun. I'm sure others can add more, that's just off the top of my head. Dear Lord. Have just been texting with women from my "Girls Group." My heart is broken.
One of our group is in her late fifties, and has been suffering from early onset dementia for a while now. Well, her husband has just said that it's so bad that we shouldn't bring dinner over next week to give him an evening out with the guys. One of the group says we should all take turns staying with her during the day, which is kind of crazy. The husband is a doctor and can well afford care, and according to him, she doesn't know anyone half the time. My fear is she might wander off, burn down the house, or something. He needs to get full-time day care for her stat. The other girls in our group agree. This is just so sad. She's always been such a vibrant, intelligent, wonderful person. I saw her at our oyster roast and she was smiling, etc., but you could tell she didn't have a clue where she was or what was going on. Well, husband is picking me up from the hotel soon for another board meeting luncheon, then it's off to MiL's house for the rest of the weekend. 164 There's a meme that the cop guarding the school was justified because he only had a cop gun (presumably something like a Glock) while the shooter had military gear. I'm skeptical.
We're talking engagement in close quarters where long-range accuracy is not a factor. Glocks were designed for the military and shoot just as fast. AR15s seem to have smaller rounds than your typical Glock which are 9mms to 45s. Mag capacity for both are large. At the engagement ranges we're talking about, though, 9mm would be more than adequate to subdue the shooter, either directly or via making him take cover. A Glock 19 has a 10+1 capacity. 9mm is the caliber.
Cops typically carry two full mags in their belt, so one has 31 rounds total. A pistol shooter can aim and fire around a corner, for instance at a doorway or hall intersect, a little more readily than one using a long gun like an AR. Fire rate is semiauto, meaning as fast as one can pull the trigger. Glock thus same rate as AR. There are plenty of YouTube videos showing trained gunners swapping mags on a 9mm semiauto and getting off 31 rounds in a ridiculously short period. And remember, the killer wanted many victims. The cop should have been after one target. Posted by: Les Kinetic at February 23, 2018 10:32 AM (5OEn4) Posted by: Deplorable Ian Galt at February 23, 2018 10:33 AM (8iiMU) 232

But everyone is forgetting that he only did what the responding cops have done in nearly every school shooting since Columbine: wait outside for reinforcements (officer safety!!!!!!) while kids are mown down inside. I can't remember the last school shooting where the perp didn't kill himself. Lanza did. Harris and Klebold did. The VT shooter did. An English conductor (it might have been Sir Thomas Beecham) once said
that listening to Vivaldi was like working in a sewing machine factory. Hmm. One might have expected more respect from a syphilitic, drug-dealing old cock-hound like Beecham for a guy who had unlimited access to the most beautiful young women in Italy. I would be sorely (ooh!) tempted to have a word with Beecham about how he was conducting Vivaldi. Because now that Vivaldi is often played as basically rock and roll, I think we can see what the problem was. There are those who oppose this of course. I am not a Mozart fan because Mozartians in my youth were old queens, drier than a popcorn fart, who looked for a way to make it Calmer. And "Amadeus" spoiled all that. I'm not an expert and don't consider myself any kind of hero. I'd probably be scared stiff in that situation too.
The thing is, nobody knows what he'll do until it happens. You want to think you'll be brave but you don't know. Once in my life I ran into danger to save someone. It made me feel good about myself, that I acted the way I'd hope I'd act. But who knows, another time I might not. And that's what's wrong with the "oh you're going to count on the janitor and the lunch lady to do what the trained cop couldn't do" argument. The janitor and the lunch lady might not step up, but they might. If there are eight armed people on campus, seven might shy away from engagement. One cop did. He was only one cop. He was a thirty plus year veteran on a sleepy assignment. He probably didn't know in his heart that he was a coward until he found out. If eight people are armed on the campus there is at least the chance that one will stand up. Posted by: Bandersnatch at February 23, 2018 10:52 AM (fuK7c) 328

And just think about what would happen if one of the friends are there, and something medically or physically dangerous happens, and they don't have the resources to cope with it. That's why this is at the stage where professional help is needed. A full time nurse at the house is needed, or possibly an assisted living situation, with 24 hour nursing care available. It is not a good solution, but better then leaving her on her own during the day. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 23, 2018 10:53 AM (k1TUh) 330

Posted by: Jane D'oh at February 23, 2018 10:48 AM (LiB9W) Jane, I've got more experience with this type of thing than I wish I had. Putting her in a memory facility is the best thing for her mentally and physically and is best for everyone else involved with her. No single person can give an advanced Alzheimer's patient 24 hour care. It's impossible. Being alone with a person who is advanced and still mobile is a nightmare. They can do things such as walk out the door, etc. while you go to the restroom, they can become combative , etc. Her husband is likely getting no sleep at night. Having her moved into a facility will allow all of you to visit her with fresh minds and bodies and allow her husband to begin to retrieve his life and his own health. Do not go along with this plan to stave off the inevitable which may result is serious consequences for those involved. The painting has an interesting provenance, according to my search engine. The Nazis stole the painting and the Polish museum that owned it had to actually buy it back from its eventual German "owner" when he tried to auction it six years ago. I guess the idea of just storming the auction with a special ops group wouldn't have been well-received, even if justified.

And I remember my Uncle the war vet telling me that in actual combat, often its the people you think who are least likely who do the best, and the people who you think are most likely to be brave who fall apart. You just never know til it happens. I was never shot it, but in my oilfield career I was in some very dangerous situations from time to time. (H2S blowout with an airmask one, one breath of outside air and you drop dead) I found, to my surprise, that being in danger made me much calmer emotionally and made every decision very clear. Don't know why, just happens. The SRO was not at the school to prevent crime, he was at the school to hide and cover-up student crimes. I have to disagree. He was a sworn Sheriff's deputy, not just a mall cop. Mall cops don't carry guns. School districts have "police departments" now. What's the point if they don't act like police. They should be call deterrent guards or something if they can't act, not deputies or officers. He is a coward, plain and simple. He should be stripped of his pension for gross dereliction of duties at the very least.

What a damned orator this president is. It's...embarrassing!
We need a new cut and overdub from "Downfall." Jung Hitler jumps up on the table in the Bier Hall to Putsch. And runs smack into Donald J. Trump. "And little One-Ball Adolf heah? He says he wants a Revolution! Folks, ain't that the cutest thing you evah seen?" Adolf slinks away... Sure, maybe Trump's oratorical style would never have developed without Hitler coming first. Maybe. And maybe Trump represents those "sections of New York, major, that I wouldn't advise you to try to invade." I for one think he'd have worn Mussolini's hide as assless chaps. If eight people are armed on the campus there is at least the chance that one will stand up. Posted by: Bandersnatch at February 23, 2018 10:52 AM (fuK7c) Studies from the Military show that taking civilians... arming them... and shoving them into combat... only about 1 in 10 MEN will actually shoot AT the enemy... We don't have a large enough statistical base about Women to add them into the mix yet... but my guess is it would be even lower. To enhance the effectiveness... you would need TWO armed Men there... with reasonable training... Because the military found that once ONE of a pair starts to do what they are trained to do, their partner or small unit will as well... Posted by: Don Q. at February 23, 2018 11:03 AM (NgKpN) 389

It's not just "that kid."
https://twitter.com/TheLastRefuge2/status/966951389178900480 It's the policy of the school system and the police to ignore and coverup criminal behavior by students to keep the system's statistics looking good and money for having low student crime rates flowing. It's not just this school system either. The Obama administration put in place the incentives to fudge the numbers and coverup the crimes back in 2010. The 27 minute delay on the surveillance is to allow time to delete video evidence of crimes so they don't have to be written up and then entered into the statistical record. The SROs are hired for their ability to coverup crime not enforce the law or stop it. Posted by: geoffb at February 23, 2018 11:11 AM (zOpu5) 430

He says there are a few guys on the job that you can't count on and everybody knows who they are, but it's so tough to get rid of them that they're just pushed aside and told to stay out of the way and not get anyone else hurt. Spring break season is upon us, and there will be plenty of kids using the time to go into public places, get in front of cameras, and scream about the nasty NRA and Republican school shooter-killers.
It cannot be stopped. There was no similar follow-up by country music fans after the Las Vegas massacre because it was the political opposite of what we have here. What it will do is to fan the flames of the opposition, those who want to uncover the mess that's there in Broward, and those that want to secure the schools with gates and weaponry. I sure wish we had reporters that would confront Dem politicians at every opportunity, with the same spirit they have when asking Repubs about whether they will "stand up" to the NRA, asking the Dems what "do something" means, with specifics. Did you know, when he worked for Count Toby out at the summer place, he had a whole section of gypsy fiddlers on staff? While he was inventing what we call the symphony? But a question for you: The old timers used to tell us that the first thing to go when you sniffed H2S was your sense of smell. In other words, you get a whiff of that rotten egg smell, start running, don't smell it anymore so you think you're in a safe area and then BOOM, you're dead.
True?" Yes, true, although it does depend on the PPM concentration. Very low amounts, a few ppm, will give you a blinding headache first. What's so bad is that it acts on the nervous system, which is really nasty. Not long after a person notices the rotten eggs small, the nasal receptors are overwhelmed and cut out, which is why smell seems to go away. And a little bit after that the muscle control in the lungs gets neutralized, which is when someone falls down and dies. If someone with a mask can pull a collapsed person out of danger and get them on some mechanized CPR (NOT mouth to mouth!) for 15 minutes, they'll probably survive. It's a weird, weird poison. Oh, and it eats high strength steel just for fun. Turns steel into pieces of brittle wood. Posted by: Tom Servo at February 23, 2018 11:21 AM (k1TUh) 498

Deterrence to school shootings takes many forms. What Broward slaughter suggests to me is a complete lack of preparedness, from the security systems, on-site personnel, the frickin SHERIFF, top to bottom LACK of preparedness.
Speaking of preparedness: Do any public schools at any level practice "lone shooter incursion" safety drills? Back in the day we had no-notice drills for fire, nuke, earthquake, and creepy dudes entering the playground drills. First rule: stay calm and protect yourself---forget about your belongings (the nuke training was useless but at least we all knew what to do just in case we got lucky). That's different than "run screaming randomly into the shooters' path." Kids aren't helpless sheep unless they haven't been shown *how* to respond, *when* to respond, and *why* they must choose staying calm. Lot's of noise about the kind of children we are raising (most don't know how to clean dog shite off their shoes....that's real), but that doesn't concern me. It's idle criticism. As a former teacher over 25 years, K-12, college, tech schools, and land grant universities, there is a common principle about young people that's being roundly ignored. Young people are RESILIENT and place a high degree of value on surviving, despite the culture of consumption that has them drugged out and eating bad food, oversaturating themselves with electronic media and virtual reality...blah blah blah. Some discussants ignore that principle which has been around as long as humans have walked the Earth and it will be around long after all of us are on the bottom of a rootbed somewheres nice. Young people are trainable. They have limited power in their lives overall, even though blah blah blah. Most of all their brains are hyper-developed but only in 2 of the 7 main areas. But they are trainable through demonstration, stories, and *DRILL*. Those 3 components inspire them to demonstrate competence. They tend to hate stupid shit coming out of adult pie holes. And I would imagine the Blowhard County Bored With Education is shoveling it by the truckloads. So... If parents weren't so pre-occupied they'd engage with their kids in basic self-defense/martial arts training. The "Raiders of the Lost Ark" sword/gun parody aside, 10 kids in that school with the *MINDSET* to prevail in any way possible against a gun-wielding assailant would have been a support to the JROTC and other heroes that day. ADVANTAGE---> Human targets become harder to hit targets. (Not saying turn them into ninjas. Saying self-defense is the best defense: and the highest order of self-defense is to not be where your assailant thinks you're going to be.) Hell make the training into a video game--- take the power out of their fear. And at the same time light a fire under the lard asses "watching over" these hen houses. Kids are pretty good at holding adults to a higher standard when they are doing it for themselves. Class subject matter and problem solving exercises could be devised at all levels of schooling: if it's about the kids' survival, then teach them to apply academic concepts across disciplines to solve complex problems. Final thought: here is my definition of "expert"--- a former drip under pressure. End this tyranny of fear. Hoist the black flag over every school in America and back it the f*ck up with lethal defensive deterrence. HL Mencken lives. "Can I haz a cheezburger now?" 529 The entire focus of armed security or LE is to draw fire away from the soft target civvies.
Period. Not get shot. Not go down nobly. OODA. Basic chit. You go in to protect but do so intelligently with skill (training doesn't automatically give you skill--- but practice does). That deputies own mental health issues were playing out. Can't have that. How close to retirement was he? Is that a factor in this? But I digress. Take cover, advance toward the target. Don't become the target. Make the a-hole into a target. That's the game-changer--- not just some silly yes/no "choice" to go "in" or not. Change the effin game. The idea of war is not to die for your country---it's to make the other guy die for his. GS Patton See that asshole before he sees you (and make sure you have at least 4 clips so you can reload) and make the a-hole have a come to Jesus moment. OODA you donut eating gravy soppin dum mutha"shutchermouth!" Peace, love, and unicorns! -NoS Posted by: Nosferatu at February 23, 2018 12:24 PM (ghzHY) 533
