The Democrats thought they could avoid running on their agenda and just run against Trump. With Trump's numbers and the GOP's numbers improving -- and a majority now approving of the tax cut law -- the Democrats might have to run on their agenda after all.
And won't that be wonderful for them? A big concern for them: Nancy Pelosi's crummy denigration of increases in citizens' take-home pay.
Now many Democrats say they're watching nervously as polls start to trend in Republicans' favor -- and worry they’re witnessing the beginning of a slow-motion train wreck that they have no idea how to stop. ... According to [a memo by the super PAC Priorities USA], Democrats have become too focused on reacting to Trump, while the president has continued to trumpet the GOP tax bill and its economic benefits, giving him a slow but increasing advantage in polls. Other Democrats say the problem is not necessarily Pelosi herself but how she has chosen to combat the GOP tax law. The minority leader described benefits to the middle class -- such as pay bumps or bonuses handed out by businesses after its passage -- as "crumbs" compared with the tax breaks corporations received. ...
Combine that with recent polls showing the GOP tax bill, which Pelosi last year derided as "Armageddon," increasing in popularity, and Democrats are on edge. ... "Language is important, and we have to be very careful that we don’t insult people by saying that the amount of money they get is crumbs," Cleaver said. "We cannot be seen as patricians." ... They brought it up here. It's usually at St. George's in Taylor, PA, but they do bring it around to other churches from time to time. Taylor seems to border Scranton to the southwest so not too, too far from NJ if you feel like a road trip during Lent.

As expected, the trends are favoring Trump. The Rs have a structural advantage that will likely lead to a gain in the Senate of four or more seats. On current trajectory it'll be hard for the Ds to regain the House.
A strengthening economy is wind in Trump's sails.
The x factor I expect will happen is that by November, MSM will completely discredited with 70% or more of voters because of upcoming revelations. They were in a hole but kept digging. Trump will hit them with a flame thrower.

Main advantage for Dems is the mediocrity of the congressional GOP, their refusal to set up a brutal, *political* environment where hard choices are made and incumbents/parties forced to take stands. Especially in the Senate, of course.
There is some time left for this. But if we don't see a much harsher differentiation campaign, with Trump as part of it, by early summer, they're deciding to take the extremely high-risk approach of banking on inertia and a good economy, hoping to "let the election come to them".
Oh - and the CONTINUED DOMINANT ROLE OF THE MSM IN SETTING THE POLITICAL FRAMEWORK is the only thing that makes the flaming clown car of the Dem Party any sort of contender in this context.

That said, the losses in some districts Trump won by 10+ points a year ago tells me all I need to know about how much the local GOPe organizations have sucked, suck now, and will continue to suck. So yeah, I expect to see a bunch more of these "shocking" losses in the weeks to come.
My best guess is that the GOP will hold the HOR, losing another 6-10 seats, mostly RINOs we won't mind losing all that much. In spite of themselves, the GOPe will probably pick-up 4-7 in the Senate. If Trump starts to roll and the Dems continue to implode this is the floor for the GOPe, though.

I could also see a lot of non-political people not liking the idea of going there at all even if they aren't crazy about Trump. It's going to absolutely cause havoc on the stock market and people's 401k.
Still, I definitely am not feeling cocky about 2018 in the House. Lots of retirements and history is on the party out of power. Also, I can't ignore there's a lot of special elections that seem to keep going Democrat's way for one reason or another.

But we'll have to see about the mega-scandals 1) getting *through* the press firewall, and 2) having an impact. Actually such factors are usually very good at affecting outcomes in that they tend to suppress turn-out for the bad guys, more than they actually boost turn-out for the good guys.
If I were McConnell I'd be scheduling votes right now on gun bans. Hell some safe GOPer should introduce one as an amendment to next business on the floor (bypass the committee referral/delay).
THIS is what you want in a mid-term cycle where your opponents have many vulnerable incumbents whose political existence is an anomaly, and a fraud. You want the incumbents from MT, ND, WV, MO, OH etc. having to vote fer/agin a gun ban, when all media attention in focused on the topic. This is the way the Senate used to work. It's called competitive politics.

Not really true in the sense that, come re-election, the president can in theory choose someone new and Pence would be out whether he liked it or not. It used to be true though when the vice-president was whoever got the second highest vote total in the EC.

I'm the opposite in that I can see Republicans holding the Senate and likely adding there purely because there's a decent number of states that Trump won by a crazy margin yet has a Democrat Senator. Just a brutal calendar for Senate Dems. Think places like West Virginia and Missouri. Its full of Red States and incumbent Democrats. They'll have to run the board to take the Senate. If the election was like 2010 or 2014, we'd probably net like 5 or 6 additional seats.
The House though is much easier for me to see flipping since every seat is up for election. There's still a lot of gerrymandering, but there's also a lot of Republican Reps in blue states like New York, New Jersey, Illinois, etc.

Yesterday, the conservative candidate for WI Supreme Court Judge won by sizable margins over the two leftists, who openly hate Trump and conservatives. (Fortunately the nuttier of the two, from Madison, was eliminated completely so today Dane County has a sad.)
However the general election will be in April. The totals for the 2 leftists combined beats the conservative total, so I'm hoping that more leftists stay at home in April and more conservatives - a lot more - turn out.
I don't mean to be a Debbie Downer, but the cardinal sin of conservatives is, I think, complacency. We can't get complacent because the Left never gives up.

The way to do it is pay teachers and administrators a monthly bonus to qualify for CCW permit and demonstrate continued competence with the hand gun while you carry it in school. Armed guards a waste - while the number of armed adults in a school is an unknown and their identity is unknown to the shooter.
I would add, every school should have an evacuation plan for a live shooter that does not include using the hallways. Jeebus, how dumb is it move targets into an ambush?

Look at the FL legislature. At the very center of the storm, at the maximum phase, they rejected some gun bans (I think). That's how you do it. But at the congressional level, what you're doing is handing the Dems a shovel, and asking them to dig. If they do, great. If they don't, it helps discredit this shameful hysteria even more quickly.

Not exactly the same. Unlike brats in a restaurant, these kids have been through something genuinely awful and traumatic. They've lost friends and teachers.
Think back to trying to comfort grieving relatives. When they were sobbing away and maybe irrationally blaming God or the doctor or whatever for the death, did you jump in and say, "No, no, that's not correct!" and start arguing with them or did you just let them blow off some steam?
Believe me, I agree with you - but scolding or belittling them or saying "who cares what you think?" would be the worst optics possible right now. Conservatives are prone to that sort of tonedeafness.
Let them rant and feel important for a bit but don't let them actually change policy.

I really did have something to do, so I spoke with her politely for a few minutes. Then was glad to leave.
Me golden idol had been tarnished.
I was glad things had worked out as they had cuz she wasn't my type at all anymore.
And since then have never wondered how things might have been had I taken a different path.

I have a story about. A friend went to his 50th high school reunion and this woman came up to him and said "Hii, David" He didn't know who she was. She wasn't wearing a name tag at that point. He said she had been sick and had trouble walking and he couldn't believe this heavy woman was the same cute girl he knew in high school . Then he started talking to her and he realized it was the same kind, sweet person he knew in high school-just the outside had changed. And I imagine he looked a bit different too.

I give zero f**ks about someone's hysteria, or "loss", etc. apart from those things in themselves, where my sympathy is normal (not histrionic, normal).
They are fully accountable for what they say and do. If someone in those circumstances calls for evil, stupid, despicable things - they owe everyone an apology the nanosecond they return to normal. OR - that's "who they are".
I find it particularly offensively stupid when grieving people are given license to slander, promote evil and stupidity, and advocate disaster for others, based on their own temporary (or more likely, innate) lack of intelligence and understanding. F**k them in particular. Using their own loss as cover is as vile and indefensible a thing as I can imagine.

Between a 6% raise and the new tax law, I'm seeing an 11% increase in my take-home pay. Mrs. Cop has also seen a nice bump in her pay check. We're seeing some serious moola flowing our way but that's all "crumbs" isn't Nancy? Well duh. Bar Rescue even admits that they go to the truly awful places. They're not going to go to the bar that is typically full on Friday nights and the owner is struggling to get by and would like a renovation. They want the place that is loosing 3 grand a month and has 6 customers a week and hopefully some colorful personalities working as well.

The Supreme Court of PA ignored the State Constitution stating that districts can only be changed through legislation and mandated that a new map be applied created by a liberal jackass (who, by the way did the same thing in North Carolina and a host of other red leaning states).
Well, the map now in application (to quote the leader of the local Republican party) is a democrat wet dream. They took republican leaning districts and added very very blue areas to them such that most now lean blue. It's unbelievable how blatant this is. But, there you have it. PA is going to lose a lot of seats in the midterms. ALOT!
