The really bad ones - the really mean ones - will go for the throat, usually a big male. Also, the ones that go for the throat don't yowl or make any noise. I think somehow a few cats get born with tiger brains, stear clear of them.

And a good one. I should like it because I do like domestic scenes, but for some reason artists tended to show bugeyes in animals to express just about everything. Don't like it much because the cats really look more like dogs.

74 The cats have a slightly cartoonish look but the rest of the still life is excellent. Check out his other paintings, especially the still life, on Wiki. The guy had a thing for dead or dying animals. Some of it is a little disturbing if only because it might have been a popular motif in 1500s Holland. However, his ability to portray the animals' fur and feathers is remarkable. The detail and true to life colors must have taken a long time to accomplish.

91 "Looks like my two cats when they play-fight."

For a while I had two cats that made every day a 3 stooges film playing through my house. (if you count me as the 3rd, I guess) one was solid black, one was solid gray. Typical move, the black one would be calmly walking across the living room, and suddenly the grey one would shoot out of his hiding spot to the side and hit the black one on a dead run, just bowl him over. And then the real hilarity would start, it was like watching this screaming yowling grey and black yin&yang ball caroming around the living room. the best I could do would be to try and stay out of its way.

One of the most infuriating things I heard was the US Olympic Ski team was bowing out of an event because they had zero chance to medal. Guess they heard that there are no participation trophies in the Olympics.
The US Olympic Committee should hang their heads in shame for sending athletes like this. There are so many other hard working athletes out there who would give their eye teeth for a chance to compete and the ski team shits all over them.

The model for the painting looks remarkably like several of my aunts in their later years, both the faces and general build. Shows the persistence of Scandi genes. That side of the family derives from the Vikings who settled Normandy France. Must have been a numerous but insular group because a thousand years later in Quebec Province the traits remained.

Not important, just a personal point of interest about the painting you might find amusing.

I'm only half kidding when I suggest maybe they ought to start sending Special Olympics teams. While Special Olympians do all get medals for participating, there is real competition for the gold and silver and the participants give their best efforts. And they are always happy to be there. Let's say that a cat really dislikes other cats: hisses at them, raises its fur, etc. But the cat loves the humans that serve it.

I don't know why the Olympics continues to add more of these type of events.

And for God's sake why would you need to add "Style points" to things like ski jumping? Can't you just see who can jump the farthest?

I'm not sure this is ideal either. Should every country be allowed to
compete in every event? There should be some athletic standards - best
of the best and all.

---

That's interesting because I'm guessing there is some sort of set requirement or standard of winning for getting in. It's pretty impressive that a guy could start training and meet Olympic level requirements in a year.

That behavior is seen in some more primative dog breeds, Alaskan Malamutes in particular. I don't think it's self hating as much as it doesn't view itself as a "dog". A cat with similar behavior might have a similar root. I've heard chimps and gorillas that learn sign language act similarly.

It is impossible for a cat to hate itself.
Each cat is a self-contained locus for the center of the universe (Betcha didn't know the universe had so many centers, huh?)
So for a cat to hate itself would be to deny the existence of the universe, which as we all can see, is pretty certain to exist.
Therefore, ipso facto, cat cannot hate itself.

Simple!

I don't think it matters any longer. The while point of the modern Olympics was changed forever when the Soviets and their satellites started sending professional athletes pretending to be amateurs and eventually the west followed suit.

It's now a hodge podge of pros and amateurs, mostly pros no matter what they call themselves, so if some Maori from New Zealand wants to train enough to meet the bare minimum requirements to compete in cross country skiing I'd just as soon watch him as a bunch of pros pretending they are amateurs.

Some parts of San Francisco, because of human feces being left on the streets along with needles, are now dirtier than parts of Brazil or Kenya. And SF's answer on doing something about this? Raise taxes. So the U-Haul place still has difficulty meeting outflow demands because so many of its trucks are one way trips. Escape from San Francisco indeed.

306 Franklin Graham
My father Billy Graham was once asked, "Where is Heaven?" He replied, "Heaven is where Jesus is and I am going to Him soon!" This morning, at the age of 99, he departed this world into eternal life in Heaven, prepared by the Lord Jesus Christ - the Savior of the world - whom he proclaimed for nearly 80 years. He will be missed by our family, his colleagues, faithful ministry partners, and, yes, many around the world. But what joy he has to be welcomed by God the Father, and be reunited with my mother in the presence of Jesus who speaks peace to eternal souls.

What about you? When you depart this world do you know with certainty where you will spend eternity? You can know this today. Jesus said, "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). The One who comforts weary souls has given us this promise, "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me ... I go to prepare a place for you ... I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:1-3).

I didn't want to get involved but I felt bad for her so I asked what was the matter. She said, in my entire life I've never been hugged by a man. Would you give me a hug?

I really didn't want to get involved but again, I felt bad for her so I bent down and took her in my arms and gave her a hug.

But she was still crying. So I asked, why are you still crying? She looked at me and said, that was a nice hug but it just reminded me I've never been kissed. Would you kiss me?

No I was getting really mad but once again my better angel took over and I gave her a deep and long kiss.

I was sure that would be the end of it but no, she was still sobbing. Frustrated, I asked, now what is wrong? She answered, your kiss made me realize I've never been screwed by a man in my entire life.

So I picked her up and threw her in the ocean and said, there, now you're screwed!

339 331 The athletes aren't content to just shut up and represent America. Instead of the weasel wording "I don't represent the President" she should admit "I don't represent America, I represent the Democrats". Rippon should admit "I don't represent America, I represent Homosexualism". They're kind of doing what the NFL did, shattering an illusion that there was some common bond between us. They show open contempt for the country that funds them.

385 Just the way I'm feeling:

Skepticism fails. I say that as a person committed to analysis by Skepticism. I've long know that a policy of doubting first would lead us to doubt that such a policy yields anything--because first we doubt anything.

But I just realized that a universal policy of skepticism question of whether we even have the faculties for skepticism. Whether what we call a "doubt" is indeed anything like a "doubt" would be. I guess I didn't realize that skepticism is the very engine of nihilism.

As I have a strong impression that the above means something (and really a pleasant feeling--and no reason to not engage--if it cannot), I chose the empirical experience that I can recognize as a refutation by contradiction. Skepticism is generally useful, it is just not universally useful.

Of course, this is probably just a modern tracing and filling of Thomas Bayes skeptical case for faith.

Yet, it remains doubt is not universally prescribable, and like all questions of prescription need to be answered by the subjective question "What do we gain?" It's clear what we gain by a special application of doubt: we gain to some degree a tested and weathered--perhaps more robust--statement that hopefully conflates less than it otherwise might. But again, to say that anything is gain, is to not doubt it is gain and to implicitly trust in the subjective act of weighing.

389 Bandwagoning is a thing in high school. That and getting out in the fresh air away from the shackles of the classroom.

I homeschooled my kid to avoid many downsides of high-school. The march through the institutions had been well underway, he got exposure to ideas he would have been carefully shielded. One advantage was that air and freedom in plenty, led to less resentment of hours spent in study. There was a lot less wasted time - gathering and sitting and coming to order and getting from class to class are time sucks. The best advantage was no lord of the flies group dynamics egged on by foolish adults with their own agendas.

When I was six our first grade teacher made us all write a letter to Ho Chi Minh pleading for release of POWs. I don't know if my reaction was typical but I had a clear sense of being used and I resented it. I knew I didn't know anything about the matter and that adults were expecting my "kidhood" to make adults weepy and interested. Nothing against Paul Galanti but I knew it was over my head and that adults were using me.
